I have a very jaded disposition toward the Dune series; my ex girlfriend of 3 years let me borrow the first book. I must have read about 300-400 pages before the day we broke up hahaha. After that, I was never able to complete it.

I'd love to give it another shot someday.

So far I'm really enjoying it, but I've had such a small sample of the series. I've heard that Frank Herbert is only responsible for a few books and then it was picked up by his...son? I've heard it takes off in very different directions.

But I found some nice BCE's of the original trilogy, they look and feel like 1st/1sts but without ANY of the value, so I'm pleasantly reading those.

    Larry Niven - Ringworld

I had to stop Rhialto the Marvelous by Jack Vance. The whole book felt pointless. It was just more silly adventures of verbose, eccentric, scoundrel magicians. The first book was the best and I hate to say it, I should've just stopped there.

The further you get into the Ender saga, the more intensely political it becomes. I love the series and enjoyed them all but it did get to be a bit much. I found that the Bean books (the "Shadow" series) has better pacing throughout.

Let me know what you think of Xenocide!

    Gordon Dickson, SOLDIER, ASK NOT.

It's been a VERY long time since I picked up any of the Dorsai books; this was a nice, vintage copy and I'd wrapped up the last of the new stuff I had a couple of nights back. Always interesting to re-read stuff that I haven't thought much about for 40 years or so.

SPEAKER FOR THE DEAD is still one of my favorite sf novels. I liked XENOCIDE and CHILDREN OF THE MIND well enough, and I enjoyed the Bean books for what they were. I recently added the Centipede Press edition of ENDER'S GAME to my collection, and hope that there are more to come from Jerad.

Honestly, I don't mind heavy politics in sci fi as long as there is a healthy dispersion of action. My sweet tooth must be satiated lol. Scott has a fascinating take on the human condition so I'm game.

Finally got around to starting NOS4A2. I'm a little more than halfway thru at the moment. It's ok, but I have to say Vic is one of the most annoying characters ever. I like the storyline, but I think her character is making it hard for me to fully get into it. I already put it down once to read another book in between cause I was reading it so slowly.

    Igor Baranko - Shamanism

I never got what the big deal about NOS4A2 was. It's a fine book but nothing really stands out.

Bloodwars - Brian Lumley. Book 8 of The Necroscope Series. I've enjoyed this series, this one is a little more difficult to read than the others. It might be because I've been medicated for a kidney stone for the last couple weeks.

Interesting. It has a quasi-pseudo-somewhat metafictional aspect to it. I'm only about 1/4 of the way through.

So I'm guessing you've gotten to the point in the story where she's an adult? I was just wondering if maybe you found young Vic annoying, her adult self, or both.

Yep, young Vic wasn't too bad, but as adult all her annoyingness has drastically magnified

    Spoiler:
I'm at the point where Manx has kidnapped her son, and she wants to fix up the triumph to go save him.

    Currently reading this:

as well as Unlimited Power. I really like reading a non-fiction and fiction book at the same time. Unfortunately, this will have to be scaled back or stopped when I resume college classes in a couple weeks. Trying to make it through the original Foundation trilogy and two non-fiction books prior to this interruption

PS- I love the whole theme you got going on there, Ricky.
