The free will thing is something that I was really wondering about as well. Especially since it was all set up in the beginning that they would be pushed into pushing the button. I'm not sure they really had a choice per say.

They had free will. They had a choice. The experiments were designed such that it was all very difficult choice/s.
Really? I think I'd lean towards the exact opposite theory, that they didn't have free will and that Steward and co. took certain liberties to make sure that Norma and her husband's choices were made to a point in which they would be acting out of desperation, which would be pushing the button, making everything pre-determined.

No, if you're choices are incredibly hard that is not equal to not having a choice. Predestination does not negate freewill except perhaps sometimes in a practical sense.

I'm still trying to figure out the big picture. Maybe there isn't one, but I like to think there is.
Let's say Steward is an alien (as I feel that he is) what if he is working with the humans to help them fight against his alien race. The assumption is that their invasion is impending.
My theory is that the experiment is to find men who have what it takes to fight the alien race. Not everybody is up to the challenge, and the experiment would weed out the people who can handle the job.
Obviously, this is just my imagination at work, but I kind of like it.
