DT involves multiple genre-type elements: some western (the "old/dusty/moved on" thing), some ordinary (think NY city), some horror (creatures/violence/death), some fantasy (alternate societies, jumps in time etc.) - to me, it just seems that there will be plenty of other opportunities for those kind of effects (stargates, glowing symbols) without treading on the "moved on" stuff. I think it's crucial that, as much as they may have changed, they preserve some of Roland's "wandering the dusty plain" identity/background - he's an utterly human being, albeit one with a singular background.

Also, and I admit that my memory is rusty of most DT details, but - aren't Roland's guns free of magic etc.? I thought his firing of the guns was a product of skill and well-crafted guns, no magic to fuel a glow etc. - again, I don't want a Star Wars-y DT (not criticizing SW; it's just a good example of what I don't want DT to be).

Considering that Roland's guns are forged from the melted steel of Excalibur - itself a mythical, magical weapon - I have no problem with the notion that the guns are 'blessed' with special attributes.

Mayhap they won't necessarily be aiding him in his gun slinging abilities, but rather they'll glow for other, story related purposes..

That actually sounds pretty bad ass.

How is giving the story a sci-fi feel misplaced? Wut?
What I was wondering is this: "Glowing" as a special effect of power is solely the domain of the science-fiction genre? Fantasy, anyone?

"the Restin Dane character was in more than 5 million comic magazines from 1977-1983"

So the fact that King started writing the series in 1970 should work in his favor in the suit...

He showed the stories to Kirby McCauley at some point, and he got them published. The first one in F&SF in 1978, which is only shortly after the first issue of the comic in question. I'm sure there's other documentation available.

    Hello Chaps
I have been a member here since 2008, after having read the DT series for the 100th time!!! I have been away from this forum since 2015 but feel I would like to "put my two pence worth in". I am a massive fan (as are we all!) and throughout my time reading these books I have always envisioned a film that would be extremely hard to adapt, but with care and skill could be as exciting as when I saw "A New Hope" in 77'. The books could have been serialised quite easily into three (?) films and follow the books, not exactly, but at least to preserve what is was I fell in love with the books for. SK books are hard to adapt, admittedly, as most of the action is in the characters heads, but after the Mist, Green Mile and of course the Shawshank Redemption (where Red's narrative helps immensely!) I hoped whatever adaptation for the DT would reflect the books as closely as possible. From what I am reading and hearing it would seem, using the excuse that Roland has the Horn of Eld this time, that a re-imagining has taken place and it will be based on the imagination of a screenwriter who has been trained in the art of Hollywood Blockbuster appeal. The trusting nature of people like us on this forum and the Constant Reader everywhere will go and watch out of a desire to see these books alive on film, but will ultimately be disappointed with the Matrixy, Star Warsy twist the DT has been given? As visual effects became more complex over the years, I got more excited with the prospect that so much of the fantasy element of the books could be reproduced onto film. I looked forward to the beautiful dynamic of the Three, the constant references to SK world, the desolation and mayhem in Lud, the train journey on Blaine, Mordred's sad decline, Roland Come Come Commola in Calla Bryn Sturgis and Patrick Danville "erasing" the Crimson King, then watching Roland ascend the Dark Tower and start again, maybe this time with the Horn of Eld! What a great set of sequels THIS would make?!
This is only my opinion. Forgive me for wishing that this film be better and forgive me if someone else has said the same thing earlier in the thread. There are other worlds than these and perhaps someone in one of those worlds has managed to create my vision for the DT films!!

Nope. Pretty sure Roland's guns don't function any differently than regular guns.

Who knows, before Peter Jackson came along we had the mediocre 'Lord of the Rings' cartoons.

Maybe in 10-15 years we'll get a faithful adaptation of the books via Netflix or HBO. And if we're really lucky, Frank Darabont will offer his services again and King won't turn him down this time.

Who cares if the guns glow a bit? It think its cool. It's another spin of the wheel... so maybe I am allowing it to be different because of it. If I get goosebumps from this trailer as I did minutes ago from the new IT one... well I will be a happy kat.

It's not just the guns glowing, it's that on top of everything else that seems to be happening in this film. Everything coming out indicates that this will have very little in common with the source material and that the producers don't trust the original story to be a success.

According to reporters in attendance at CinemaCon on Monday night, some of the effects were still unfinished in the trailer tease that Sony debuted.
Seriously? How do they not have stuff like this done yet? We already have an official trailer for IT which comes out 2 months after this movie.
Hearts are tough, she said, most times hearts don't break, and I'm sure that's right . . . but what about then? What about who we were then? What about hearts in Atlantis?

Didn't his guns glow red hot during the Battle of Tull? Perhaps they were merely scorching hot from the sheer expenditure of ammunition and I filled in that visual detail on my own.

No, I think diehard fans are just desperate to find something - anything - to nitpick, no matter how minuscule.

As usual TMZ reporting is a joke. Who is suing? Is Warren Publishing suing? Since they haven't existed since 1983 I assume not. Is it James Warren or Bill DuBay? Is it New Comic Company, LLC who acquired all rights in 2007? Where was the suit filed? New York? Maine? If TMZ has any actual knowledge of the suit then why don't they provide any details?

Waiting 35 years to sue probably violates a limitations statute. $500 million is also a ridiculous figure. This seems to me to be a frivolous lawsuit.
