I heard the movie is actually similar to Tim Lebbon's The Silence, which is also in production. Some guy on a different forum is corresponding with Lebbon who doesn't seem to happy about how this all played out.

And yes, Bird Box is phenomenal. The rest of his bibliography... not so much.

I was actually going to ask about The Silence. I have yet to read the book or see the movie yet, but when I first saw the trailer for A Quiet Place, I actually thought it was going to be the trailer for The Silence. I met Tim last Oct, and he was such a nice guy. Had just come recently from set so was telling us a little bit about the movie, even showed up a pic on his phone of him on set (he played a dead guy ). He was all excited about the movie. I know it's probably inevitable, since they'll most likely be compared, but I hope this doesn't ruin his film. Has anyone read that book? It's on my never ending to-be-read pile.

The monsters did kind of remind me of Clover with their weird limbs. There was the little explanation too of a meteor hitting Mexico, which is presumably where they came from and why they called them 'angels of death'.

    A Quiet Place

A perfectly executed premise. The performances are top notch and the tension ramps up with each successive encounter. A great horror film.

I honestly can't. It's boggled my mind since it was first released. If we're talking about the satirical elements and racial commentary, then yeah, it's clever. That I can see. But as a horror film? Plot-wise and character-wise, I really don't think it's anything special.

    I don't consider it a horror movie.

I LOVE The Loved Ones! So good! Saw it years ago but it's never left my mind. I don't really see Get Out as a horror film either, a satire with horror elements but really more of a psychological thriller.

Molly's Game - Smart well edited film about gambling/poker I enjoyed the Flash back/flash forward style of storytelling. Jessica Chastain was money. Utilizing the El Jefe rating system:

The VVitch is such a weird, unnerving film. It's one I will definitely be watching again one day. I adored Don't Breathe.

Saw Quiet Place last night. It was good. A lot of cheap jump scares and some of it was very slow, but great concept and a unique monster that I think they pulled off very well. The ending was fantastic.

Wasn’t too impressed by Get Out but It Follows was great I thought. Freaked me the hell out. Way more than The Visit and The Babadook, both of which I honestly thought were a bit laughable. The Witch I think I would have loved if I could’ve understood one word that was said in the whole thing. I kind of want to give it another try but I don’t see the point unless they add subtitles or something.

I’m with you on this one. Seemed like hype did its job well in this case. Just don’t get what was scary about it, aside from the racial commentary.

I missed the bandwagon on The Babadook as well. I found myself asking "how much longer is this?" when only about 25 minutes had passed, not good. I didn't hate it but was not impressed with it.

Regarding the latter; there's just something so unsettling about being followed, it's a strong primal fear. The film is admittedly a little short on scares but the knowing that something is unrelenting in its pursuit of you is unnerving.

Was just having this conversation with my co workers the other day. I was browsing through Rotten Tomatoes and saw that it had been stamped as a horror film. I'm like, dafuq? Since when is Get Out a horror film?

I think this is one of those cases of a film being placed under the umbrella of a broad genre to give the "average viewer" an idea of what to expect. Horror film requires a lot less explanation than politically tinged psychological drama.

I also wouldn't consider Get Out to be a horror film, but to be a film that incorporates some horror elements. I also thought it was pretty humorous.

What I loved about It Follows, is that it doesn't rely on those stupid jump scares that are so abundant in horror films these days. There's someone walking very slowly behind you. Yes you can easily outrun it, yet it's very unnerving because they're always there and there is no escaping it. Plus it had an amazing soundtrack.

Yes! They’re always there and no escape. Just have to live in constant angst and fear for as long as you’re willing. It also, for me at least, was a totally fresh monster/evil/bad guy. Forgot about the soundtrack, I agree.

The performances and themes and dramatic elements puts over over most horror films. Then again, I tend to gravitate more toward dramatic horror films.

Since we're talking about horror films, has anyone seen I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House? It's definitely not a typical scary horror film. It's very quiet and understated, and quite refreshing compared to most horror films we get these days. It's not on the level of The Babadook, Get Out, or It Follows, but it's definitely worth a watch. Matt, I think you would really enjoy it.

I did enjoy the humor, that's something I can say for it.

I thought the atmosphere was excellent (and reminded me a lot of reading The Haunting of Hill House), but I thought the story was a little thin.
