I will be giving my review on John Wick 2 tomorrow. So excited for this. Thought the first one was a beautiful action film. Reviews so far seem VERY strong too!

Thanks, Ricky! I appreciate that. I think you're better off renting The Founder anyway. It's more of a rental I think.
As for Moonlight, I think you should rent that one too. It's a really well made film and very important. That said, your radar might be right, I'm not sure it's something you will like.

Cannot wait to hear your thoughts. Have you seen the first one? Dammm that was some fun at a movie. People were gasping at some of the kills and yelling out. I found myself doing it with them! Hahahaha going again with my brother in law Sunday. Lol

Got advance tickets to Fist Fight this Monday. Not a movie I would normally see in theatres, but fuck it, its free, lol.
Rose and I saw the live action Cinderella yesterday. It was DAMN good. 4/5.
John Wick was solid. It was an old school action movie with modern day aesthetics and flair. Why can't more action movies be made like this? I can't stand modern action films, which is why when John Wick came out I assumed it would be standard action fare like most of Keanu's movies. No shaky cam? Marvelous! Action sequences without frantic cuts with clear action that is easy to follow, relying more on choreography than an editor? Fantastic! Aside from the action, what I really appreciated about the film is how audacious it is while playing it 100% straight. A guy going on a killing spree over a car and a dead dog? A secret society of assassins with hotels and assassin bars and assassin currency? Ridiculous! This is the very kind of thing that turned me off from a movie like Kingsmen or Wanted, except John Wick plays it straight, and it works, mostly because it's in the background, and not the plot itself. The movie had a few laughs, but I like that they didn't play up the laughter or try too hard to make me laugh or throw one-liners at me because too many action movies have to be funny too, and a little humour is fine. Really, I'm not sure if I'd really laughed a good laugh untilSpoiler:By the final sequence of the film, we'd seen Wick kick a lot of ass, and as unstoppable as he was, he was just human enough to make it all believable, but by this sequence, we'd basically accepted Wick is a god of death, and the film had fun with the final action sequences, and it was EARNED fun. Well, I should get to bed. I'm seeing the sequel in 6 hours. 4/5

LOVED your review and felt the same way!!!! Looking forward to your thoughts on 2. I liked it far better... I can only think of a few sequels I liked better. Dark Knight, Terminator 2, Temple of Doom with my man Indy! (I know most won't agree), Empire Strikes Back... just a couple I can think of. However that list is very small. I cannot wait for Wick 3 as it is a trilogy. Just well done.

Everything you mentioned is exactly what I love about John Wick. You wouldn't think it's that hard to make a good action film, but so many people have fucked it up over the years.
Wick gets back to basics. Just pure action with a badass main character. No super closeup shots of fighting. Action scenes aren't cut together with shots that last 2 frames. John Wick lets the action breathe. We see fights wide so we can capture the whole thing. More action movies should do this.
Another action franchise that really knows what it's doing right now is The Raid. If you love action, check those films out. The second film really expands the story, much like John Wick 2.
Also, Matt, you should check out The Kingsman. I actually really enjoyed that one. It really doesn't take itself that seriously either.
Just look how ridiculous this scene is from the terrible Taken 3:

Hm, just came back from John Wick 2. I liked it a lot, but I think the first one is better.
I agree. Saw Part 2 last night and give it 3.5 / 5. The first one was easily 4.5 / 5.
Part 2 was fun and enjoyable, but it just didn't have the same fresh magic, I guess is how to put it.
My two favorite little parts in the first one:
1) when the cop comes to John's house after John has waxed 12 thugs
Cop: "Evenin', John"
JW: "Evenin', Jimmy. Noise complaint?"
Cop; cautiously: "Noise complaint."
Cop, now peering around John, seeing bodies lying on the floor: "So, uh, you workin' again?"
JW: "Just sorting some stuff out."
Cop: "Ah, well, I'll leave you to it, then. Good night, John."
JW: "Good night, Jimmy"
Priceless!
2) JW is talking with the mobster dad and gets him to tell him where the son is holed up:
Mobster dad: "They'll know you're coming."
JW: "Of course. But it won't matter."
Classic!
I agree with Pablo and Dive, John Wick 2 wasn't quite as good to me as the first, but it was still pretty damn good.
The action is just insane. Like we discussed above, the way they don't over-edit the action scenes is something I just really appreciate. Like I said to my dad after the credits rolled during the first film, I'd love to have 3 or 4 more of these.
It's just pure action.

That's why as a huge Batman fan I was disappointed in the Nolan trilogy, and especially Begins.

You guys I watched Split today. I enjoyed it but was maybe hoping for a bit more? James was excellent in it. I just wish two 13ish year old girls didn't sit right down behind us and proceed to giggle through the whole movie. I also like thatSpoiler:
