Mud was very good too. Take Shelter I've wanted to see since release but I had Michaels problem. Never had a chance. Need to watch soon.
Want to see Linklater's Everybody Wants Some too if it gets released here. Then I'm just waiting for XMen.
Take Shelter was great, it's mainly a Michael Shannon vehicle. Haven't seen Mud yet.
I'm sure I'll get to Midnight Special soon, I've been intrigued by it since I first saw the trailer. I love these coming of age, Akira esque movies.
Its not really a coming of age film. It's more about those around the kid than the kid himself. I'm not even sure Akira is a good comp either. Don't want you to expect something it's not.

Good to know, thanks.
I'll try and catch it this week... hopefully they're showing it near me.
But yeah I'm stooooked for Civil War. It's being labeled 'the best comic book movie after The Dark Knight', which is high praise obviously.
Considering the Russo brothers' pedigree tho I'm not worried.
It's at Buckland Hills? Yes, that's in Manchester, which is pretty close to Hartford. That's not too far from me either. It's a pain in the butt to get to, especially during rush hour, it's also an expensive theater. Then again, I work in Hartford and could always go after work, avoiding the traffic. I will have to give this some thought. Thanks for the heads up.

The Invitation, four out of five.
Loved the buildup, thought the third act could have been a little better.
I enjoyed Pride and Prejudice and Zombies way more than I expected. A very clever, funny movie with some nice action sequences and a very dark ending that I loved. I haven't read the book, nor Jane Austen's original so I don't know how it stands up but I did like it. (3/4)
About Time - Wow. What a beautiful film. Richard Curtis is the man. Watch this movie if you havent.

My mom and I got to see an early screening of About Time and we both loved it. She usually hates time travel films too. Then again, it's barely a time travel film. I was caught off guard by the fact that the film had a very strong theme about fathers and sons.
Also, Margot Robbie.

GREEN ROOM. 8/10... Patrick Stewart... WOW. Might be my favorite film I have ever seen him in. What a show. See this all... Well done!

I saw Green Room yesterday.
Tight, taut, and thrilling. Stewart does a great job as a villain. You never know who will die, or when, and often not even how.
5/6 beers on the RFSRS.
It was cool that the opening song the band played at a Nazi supremacist gig they reluctantly took, was a cover of the Dead Kennedys' "Nazi Punks Fuck Off"
Captain America: Civil War
Let's be honest, this movie had a lot to live up to. As if following on from The Winter Soldier - arguably one of Marvel's best films - wasn't big enough, the film also had to feature a major confrontation between Captain America, Iron Man, and many other Marvel heroes battling it out, while also introducing Black Panther and Spider-Man into the MCU. With such a huge checklist for the film, has it succeeded, or has it ended up being a big mess?
Let's get something out of the way, the film packs in a lot of plot. I was really impressed by how much it crammed into two and a half hours. What I was more impressed with, though? That all that plot worked. That nothing felt rushed and everything tied together really well.
What helped was how character focused the story was. This film is less about the heroes facing another major threat to Earth and more about confronting each other. What makes this interesting is that not only are they dealing with issues that take a hard look at the destruction and mayhem previously seen in Marvel movies, but also that other issues that drive a wedge between friendships are much more personal.
There's even time for a surprisingly quiet yet emotional moment that occurs with the Captain early on, and I really do love that, while this film tells a story of what leads to heroes we've been following for 8 years fighting each other, there's a lot of emotional and character stuff in there, too.
That's not to say that the film isn't also filled with tons of action, and really impressive, awesome action it is, too. There are scenes that really blew me away, and this is long before the heroes all fight each other, too. There's some amazing, really well directed and shot action that would make many standard, non-superpower focused action movies these days jealous. (Not the guys who make The Raid movies, obviously, but I will say the sheer thrill level does get surprisingly close to matching those awesome films.)
I was really, really impressed by how much the climax completely subverted my expectations. It seemed to be leading one way that I wasn't looking forward to, but instead ended in a way that was much, much more satisfying. The film was really great overall at using the standard Marvel formula at its best - great characters, plenty of humour, awesome use of superpowers - but it also managed to subvert expectations in very well-done way. (Then again, this was directed by the same guys who did Winter Soldier, so no surprises there.)
One more thing, and I know you're all wondering about it: Spider-Man. How is the new guy in the MCU, especially after over a decade of not one but two previous interpretations on film? Really, really great, especially when it comes to matching the early days of Peter Parker. While I'm hardly the biggest Marvel fanboy, one thing I liked about reading early Spider-Man comics was that, while he learned about power and responsibility and all that, he was also a cocky teenager who had just gained superpowers and would at times make a fool of himself, especially in front of the bigger, more experienced guys. That's something we definitely get here that the other movies, frankly, couldn't. It's great to have a Peter Parker who's not just in high school but frankly actually looks and sounds like he's a young kid, too. It's a great, great contrast compared to all the other heroes we get on screen.
Civil War is a great Marvel film on so many levels. It's a great Captain America sequel (again, after Winter Soldier, that's really saying something), it's a great Avengers movie (I definitely preferred it to Age of Ultron), and it just might be, along with The Avengers, Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy, one of my favourite Marvel films yet. Definitely a film that matches and possibly exceeds its high expectations.

Excluding Civil War I don't think there's any arguing Winter Soldier is Marvels best. I've heard a lot of good things about Civil War which are helping to put my fears of it being far too convoluted with too many characters and essentially being a trailer for Infinity Wars. My love for Winter Soldier makes me want to give it a chance in theatres...just waiting to read more reviews on it first.

Put me in the camp with Randall and Webstar, I loved Green Room. Jeremy Saulnier is a director to keep an eye on. I loved Blue Ruin. It was one of my favorite films from a few years ago. Check this one out.
Fantastic review, James! I think you eased a lot of fears, including my own. I was about to ask you about Spider-Man, but you touched upon that as well. Marvel really has the pulse of these films. It sounds like in the wrong hands, this could have suffered the same problems that Batman v. Superman did. I'm now looking more forward to this one. Thanks.

Thanks, Mike. One of the reasons why I wanted to get this review so quick (along with being the kind of wanker who likes to gloat about seeing this film before its US release) was that, with BvS still fresh in our minds, we all had our worries over whether it would suffer from the same problems, and I wanted to ease those worries asap. But I think one of the main reasons this film works so much better than BvS on an emotional level at least is that it took its time to get here. We've seen Iron Man and Captain America develop both separately and together as friends across 8 years worth of films now, so seeing that friendship crumble across one single film makes the confrontation feel, for lack of a better word, earned. It's the kind of film that could've only been done right with enough previous films to back it up.
BvS? That was a film that just tried to cram in too much too early. Along with the titular fight of that film, we also got Wonder Woman plus plenty of set-up for the Justice League, plus another brand new version of Batman. Yes, we all know his story by now, but still...DC are just trying way too hard to match Marvel for "epic shared movie universe".
Having said that, I'm still fucking amazed that Civil War served as great introductions to both Black Panther and Spider-Man and still didn't manage to make either of those feel rushed. Maybe for the next DC film, they should just get the Russo Brothers to do it.

Maybe Civil War was so good because 2 Italian brothers from Cleveland directed it. Just saying . A sports radio guy in Cleveland, Tony Rizzo, grew up with their father and raves about these two brothers on his show. They have done well for themselves. Glad to see!

@James
Great Civil War write up. It looks like this is one of those films were everything comes together seamlessly and makes for an incredible movie going experience.
Can't wait to watch it.
I didn't like Iron Man at all. It had its moments but that opening sequence is beyond preposterous and the romance with Paltrow was grating lol. I'd probably give their second best film to Guardians and then Age of Ultron which I gave 3/5 to...not stand alones, but how I'd rank the top three Marvels.
