Simmons clearly does a lot of research for his novels and has a tendency to overindulge in sharing results of said research.

Overall a good read but, like many of Simmons' historical novels, he makes the reader work for the payoff.

Simmons' versatilty is impressive: he has written engaging and entertaining horror, sci-fi, historical, fantasy and noir novels.

Definitely. Viewed less as a sequel and more as an independent story it is a good read. Add some Duane McBride to the mix and you can't go wrong!

Agree. Simmons makes the reader work, that's for sure. Sometimes the payoff is there, other times not so much. That said he certainly has a diverse catalogue and isn't afraid to explore new territory.

Not sure I understand that logic on behalf of the publisher unless they have lost faith in Dan Simmons. I won't read it on kindle or any electronic device and have no interest in waiting for the book...
