From what I remember, Pennywise is way more mean sprited/threatening to them as adults.

Pretty sure that's just young actors dressed in today's fashion. 80s fashion was much louder. And their shirts wold be tucked in.
Yeah, I don't think Pennywise was supposed to be a sinister looking clown. It's trying to catch kids, not scary them off. Tim Curry's look was pretty friendly.
