There's a preexisting model (Hulk leaving the Avengers is comic book history,) so I think you're wrong about them maneuvering the character to serve the plot -- it must be the other way around.

I agree -- there were scenes specifically about everyone's camaraderie that felt phony, plus scenes where characters are just talking to set up further plot and action more came across as just talky...
