Steve described the letter in detail without quoting it verbatim when he first talked about Mr. Mercedes at the Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell last November.

Any news on a limited edition....either signed or unsigned?
I have not heard a word about King promoting this book on THE TODAY SHOW or on THE DAILY SHOW.......has anybody?
I've also heard that there will be NO signings, etc.
Also, if there were to be a limited edition, we should have heard about it by now, so I guess no limited. (My wallet appreciates that!)

Ms Mod on the SKMB:

Nothing signed that I'm aware of. He's been turning down all requests for signed editions and he won't be doing a book tour for Mr. Mercedes.
Hmmmm...not even a TV appearance?
Madness.
Someone at Liljas posted this on a page :
"My wife got an early copy at Book Expo in NYC. The umbrella is a metallic foil. It looks sweet. Wish I had the time to read it pre-release but the business of adulthood sucks so I have to wait."
metallic foil?
Could that be a Book Expo variant?
@Bev : i think i've read that you went to the Book Expo?
This is from the may 27 Wall Street Journal regarding the BookExpo America:
These signed copies, if they exist, will be REALLY scarce.Quote:
Attendees paying $30 a ticket will have the chance to mingle with such authors as John Grisham, David Mitchell, Carl Hiaasen and Veronica Roth and to pick up some free giveaways--including a single signed copy of Stephen King's coming novel "Mr. Mercedes."
John
I didn't go to BEA. Scribner gave out a couple of hundred copies, but only one was signed. The umbrella is metallic -- it's a different color depending upon the angle you look at it.
Bev, do you know if those copies were the standard trade 1st edition, or some kind of special cover edition?
I wonder which lucky attendee found the signature in their book.
To the best of my knowledge, they were standard trade hardcovers.
Thanks for the clarifications !
I bought one of these copies off ebay but didn't know about the foil umbrella until I read it at Lilja's. I had a look and yes it is foil, but I don't have a copy of the regular issue DJ to compare to. Will go to the bookstore tomorrow and check, but I'm guessing the umbrella will not be foil. Just a guess.
Ok, please let us know if this seem to be a variant and if there are any distinctions.
I have the advance review copy. Supposedly the first edition with a review letter. It has a "foil" umbrella that changes color depending upon perspective. It's cool. I like it. I also like the story even though it isn't the typical SK novel.
I agree with Brian om all points.umbrella looks like foil. Liked the book a lot. Enough to have to read the book until late at night or early morning
Even though it's not Steve's best book, it manages to create and maintain a state of high-tension.
A very enjoyable reading!
The copy of the finished book I received also has the foil umbrella -- I'm pretty sure it's standard issue.
Here it comes, a Waterstone's exclusive limited edition (the cover is slightly different, dont know if there is any difference in the text)

Tomorrow I'll be flying to Glasgow (Scotland). If someone wants me to try to pick one up, please let me know.
Hi
Does anybody know if there is a Waterstones Exclusive edition? I have seen a standard UK 1st edition and WHSmiths Variant cover.
Jon
I'm interested in all the UK variants of Mr. Mercedes. I have the standard trade edition coming to me from Amazon UK.
John
I have 4 orders for the Airport edition. Flying back into the UK tonight. If any one (other than those I have already contacted) wants this Waterstones/WHSmith variant PM me NOW!
PM sent.
