That's as good a theory as anything I've heard. IMO, the books have no significant collecting value.

I agree with Tommy. A first printing would surely have surfaced by now - if any existed.
I actually saw a second printing in a local Barnes & Noble a few months back, but a while after the initial run was sold out. There were 2 put on display mixed in with the paperback books. I think it might be possible that my correspondence with the publisher might have made them realize their mistake and when they sent the book back to print, they changed the copyright. The paperback being the 1st printing and hardcover 2nd (after the initial 3rd print mistake)?? The rep had told me that the paperback was considered the 1st printing and that there was only the one (3rd) hardcover run at the time. This whole edition is messed up. I would still say the 3rd print is the 1st state of this hardcover edition.
Also, Amazon showed the copyright page as a 3rd print when it was released and now they are showing it as a 2nd.
Glad I don't collect those editions. Screwed up no doubt.
Question on bug extermination, a friend of mine is going to 'tent' his house. He has over 1,500 books in his collection. Is it safe to leave the books in the house while it is being done or should I advise him to move out all his books?
Pack them up safely and move them out. The company may suggest a simple covering of a sheet will protect them but I wouldn't take the chance.

Thanks, Becca & Ralph.
I suppose that is the safest choice.
Can someone please refresh my memory on the ROSE MADDER variant dust jacket of the US edition, why it was done and what it is worth?
Everything should be listed in the 1st post of this thread.
See post #35 in my collections thread. I have no idea as to its value. I paid a little over $300 for mine in 2001. They are fairly scarce. I have no ides why they were done or how they got out.

I can only find your proofs thread. Do you have a link, John?
Okay, now I see it! The title is written straight across. Thanks John and Simon!
This is where you need Bob. He has 4 different variant covers for Rose Madder. I have pictures of his books, but not his permission to post them.
