His story telling is brilliant in the written form tho and can see your point re author narrating his own tale

I think for me a fair comparison would be Bob Dylan. I despise his ultra-nasally voice and used to tell people he was a great storyteller, but shouldn't be allowed to sing his own songs. LOL Anyhow, in the last couple years I've gained a much greater appreciation for him. Fuck! I'm getting old.
