This week-end, my boss is doing a mega-trail : 177km!
He was supposed to start about 2h30 ago, and should arrive on sunday.................. makes me think about "THE LONG WALK"!
I believe that his personal target is to do about 100km.. then it's a bonus
177km = 110 miles
100km (his target) = 62 miles
It's Friday night, I'm sitting in the San Francisco airport waiting to take a red eye back to Northwest Arkansas...
How's that for a random comment? Perfect for the thread no?
Just thought I'd check in to see what my friends were up to....
There are 118 ridges in a dime.
Well, that was definitely random.
That's funny! Well, unless you're a polar bear ... or from Earth .....
Actually, all of us. :( We shoulda done more to save the poor polar bears, but I myself can say I was too busy reading the newest book from one of my favoritest authors.... :P
You are lost in the woods and find a cabin. In the cabin there is only one match. There is a wood stove, a propane stove, and a kerosene lamp. Which do you light first?
Tomorrow, Sunday, the family is taking my son's girlfriend into the city (NYC) to see the play RENT, on off-Broadway...we have all seen it before but tix were like $49 apiece so we couldn't pass it up again. My whole family can likely do everyone's parts in the whole play...kinda fanatics on RENT.
Half-way. Once you get that far, you are running out of the forest :D
We saw Spider-Man and Mary Poppins a couple weeks ago..discounted tickets on TKTS is the way to go.
Mary Poppins: Spectacular...the perfect Broadway musical. Songs, dancing, acting were all excellent.
Spiderman: A bloated mess without form or function. Deserves all the bad reviews. Glad I saw it, so I can snark about it now. The flying was meh - even Mary Poppins had flying, but they didn't act like it was the greatest thing ever. Had one good song, and some funny costumes, but that was it...
:) My 8th grade science teacher used to randomly give us these little riddles on a regular test. You'd be going along, question 17, Nucleus. Question, 18, umm, mitochondria? Question 19, ribosome... Question 20............ one of them is not a quarter? Is the other one a quarter? I say quarter and a nickel.
I would love to see some real plays. I've seen everything i can so far here in Vegas, and some of them are REALLY great, but it's not the same. There's no theatre program here. :(
I guess I'll just have to hold off for the Les Mis movie coming out later this year, lol.
Couple of weeks ago, i recieved SHADOW SHOW, by Gauntlet Press.
I started reading it last night.. and wow, i was moved!
- the introduction by the editors. A very nice introduction.. which is followed by
- the introduction by Ray himself. And knowing that it was written in 2012, is very likely to be one of the very last text is wrote, is touching. In this introduction, which is sort of a "retrospective" on his carreer, he also mention how he feels that the authors in this book is his litterary legacy. Knowing that it may very well be one of his last text written, it is pretty moving !
- Neil's story (and its origin) "the man who forgot Ray Bradbury" moved me too. Because of the subject, and because about couple of weeks a french author that i follow closely said in a video interview, that he forgets a lot of things, and it sorts of worries him. It reminded me of his interview.
the story can be read online at io9 : http://io9.com/5918839/must-read-nei...o-ray-bradbury
So far, so good. Cant wait to read more tonight !
I loved Ray Bradbury as a kid (along with Arthur C. Clarke and Isaac Asimov, the big three) and still remember the feeling that I got reading Something Wicked This Way Comes and The Martian Chronicles, two of my favorites. I ordered the Shadow Show Limited Edition through CD, really looking forward to getting it in. Also thinking about picking up some Clarke and Bradbury S/Ls, just need to do my homework so I know the proper price ranges (anybody have a good site(s)?)
Just fifteen minutes ago I finished and turned in my final paper for my first class in returning to college (Colorado Technical University, going for a Bachelors in Business Management with a concentration in Project Management). Hopefully this first one was a good indicator for me, because it was a breeze; 11 total assignments for turn-in, so far I've received 10 A's with hopefully tonight's being #11. Definitely the start and ego boost I needed getting back into it after 10 years. Starting next semester (July 8th) I'll be taking two courses per, so we'll see how I hold up. Dean's List here I come!
Way to go, George!
Well, this first course was kind of a "Welcome Back to College, Here's How To Be A Good Student And Actually Graduate This Time" thing. Final paper was 10 pages of "What I Want to Be When I Grow Up and How I'll Get There From Here". Found out today that did get an "A" on the final, so 1300 out of 1300 possible points for the course. Yay me.
More importantly, as of this afternoon Colorado Springs is in the process of burning to the ground. Fire that was in the hills west of town got blown into town by a storm front this afternoon; they're talking hundreds of homes destroyed just since 4 o'clock. 32,000 people evacuated, 20,000 homes in danger, and they have absolutely no containment and no idea what is going to happen. Temperatures have been 98-101 (40-41c) the past five days, and in a drought for years apparently ... the place is a tinderbox. I'm maybe 10 miles away as the crow flies, but the way this thing is moving we are really worried. The smoke is incredibly thick and is carrying ash and embers many miles (my driveway and deck are covered in ash). Worse, they're forecasting easterly blowing winds for tomorrow, which could push it into the center of town. It would have to jump I-25 to get to us, and if it does that all of Colorado Springs could be destroyed.
All in all, not good.
If you only had room in your vehicle to save one SK book from your collection, knowing the rest would be incinerated, which one would it be? Never thought I'd have to consider that.

Not a choice. I'd die heroicly trying to rescue them all. LOL
Seriously, I hope all is okay with you, dude. That sounds kinda' scary.
Fingers crossed, but it's not looking good.
Keeping you and our other Colorado TDT members and friends in our thoughts. Wishing you and yours out of harm's way.
George, you're in my prayers. I hope that everything turns around and you and yours are safe!
John
Hope that everything will be fine, keep us posted!
I first heard about Colorado from a friend working with the Olympic trainers there... they were advised last night to stop use of all electronic devices to free up "air space" for rescue teams and equipment. My thoughts are definitely with everyone out there!
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family, George!!
Personally Id pack the books first and leave everything else (except family and val docs) to burn.
We have had our fair share of wild fires - had to save a couple of cats from a burning house not too long ago - and it is very very scary.
I hope it turns out okay for you and yours George.
