Best Sci-Fi Tournament - Round 1, Group L
-
Donnie Darko
West World
TERMINATOR 2 ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
-
Forbidden Planet
Contact
Them! (note the exclamation point in the title, missing from the poll)
Terminator 2
-
I love the plot hole that Stewie points out (during Family Guy's spoof of Misery no less) in Contact.
Well this billion dollar machine just blew up but it's ok, we secretly built another identical machine on the other side of the world!

Going with:
Forbidden Planet
Donnie Darko
Contact
Her
War of the Worlds (2005)
Terminator 2
-
THERE IS ONLY ONE CLEAR WINNER HERE AND WE ALL KNOW IT IS MADE BY SKYNET.
-
Contact had such a huge impact on me. Such a mind-blowing movie. I just rewatched it recently. It must go far in this tournament, really one of the best sci-fi movies of all time. When I watched it at the movies back in 1997, that signal noise was so amazing, scary, and truly alien.
-
I'm ashamed to admit that I had no idea Contact was written by Carl Sagan. Wtf? Watching immediately.
-
Contact is odd. I've seen it plenty of times yet I don't think I ever have an urge to watch it again.
A note: It took my brother three years to read Contact.
-
C'mmon! Where is the love for Westworld?
-
-
We wouldn't even have Terminator without Westworld!
-
I voted for both. Westworld was decent enough, but T2 is a freakin' masterpiece.

I quite agree - I just love to play homage to the forerunner
-
Holding off on voting for a bit, but I know I'll be voting for War of the Worlds and Terminator 2 (which I just watched for the first time last night). I loved Her, but don't consider it Sci-Fi.
-
Nor do I, but I still voted for it. I doubt it'll move on though. Also voted for Donnie Darko and T2.

Technicality but needs to be mentioned - Cameron ripped of two Harlan Ellison stories for the movies. They settled out of court (Harlan was paid and his name is in the credits.) Too lazy to Google it but I think those stories predate Westworld.

HAD to use all 6 votes here. Hard to exclude any pic.
Forbidden Planet was HUGE to me as a kid in the 60's (I know it debuted ~1956). Our family didn't even have a color TV until 1965, but I've seen it many times and loved it.
Contact just nailed so many cool concepts.
T2 simply can't be denied.
Westworld was years ahead of it's time.
Her is frightening to consider how close we really are to being disconnected to humans and connected to AI.
War of the Worlds is the weakest of my 6 choices, but I know it better than the remaining choices.
-
I really liked Westworld. If you love Westerns, you have to watch Westworld.
It hasn't exactly aged well, but it's still a fun movie to watch. I honestly think it's one of those films that is screaming for a remake.

How is a movie about people getting into romantic/plutonic relationships with artificial intelligence not sci-fi? Her is in every sense science fiction it's just subliminal science fiction. There is so much in that film that is very at home in the genre. Much like Eternal Sunshine and other nominees it's about how technology impacts our species and our societies. Maybe Her is too realistic of a possibility for it to be sci-fi?
-
Her is definitely sci-fi. Amazing film.
Too bad we're missing the original Terminator (still peeved about that).
-
-
Shocked to see Forbidden Planet in fifth place. One of the best sci-fi movies of all time, and one of the best movies of the 1950s!
-
T2 with a perfect score thus far :D
