I'm not much of a collector, but I would love to find an original editon of The Gunslinger (as in not the revised edition - nothing spectacular but obviously this is not going to show up on Amazon anytime soon). Any ideas where to look and what would be a reasonable amount to pay? I have the paperback but I have decided I'd like a set of hardcover editions, and this one is eluding me at the moment. :)

If you want the hardcover original you should be able to find a third edition from the boxset Grant did on ebay or maybe abebooks relatively cheap. If you want a second or first be prepared to pay a bit more.

Hi Daghain-

As for an "original" harcover Gunslinger published by Grant Books...Grant did 3 editions. Brice is correct, a 1st and 2nd edition will set you back some $$, especially depending on the condition of the book and dust jacket. A 1st edition will almost certainly be north of $500. A 2nd edition can be found for $150-$250. A third edition (completely different dust jacket art) can be found for $60-$80. Try searching on eBay.com or ABE.com.

I just picked up a second edition still in the shrink wrap not too long ago. I paid $200 for it and it was a steal (to me at least), there were no blemishes, cracks to the DJ or anything, just a perfect copy. I still want a first and third as well :)
You can also check out Betts Books, I bought my Wizard and Glass from him for a good price.

If you want the original artwork and your not a big time collector I would buy the 2nd Edition. It's virtually the same, and it's way cheaper.

btw, the 3rd Edition has new artwork on its jacket. If you don't care what version you have, you just want a hardback go for this. As you can tell Wiz has pointed out its the cheapest of the three. And the interior artwork is the same for all three editions.

abebooks.com is a good place to look. But I would guess the way King books are selling nowadays I would just wait it out on eBay. You'll eventually find a bargain.

Seems a bit high to me, but if it TRULY is unread (and I can't imagine that, but hey, I read any book that crosses my path LOL) it might be worth it. I'm not too sure, though. Expert advice, please! I'm totally willing to engage in "the hunt". :)

I've seen that one posted from time to time. I don't think he/she can get rid of it, or he/she owns multiple copies! I don't know if I would pay $90 for it, I would have to search around to see if I could find a cheaper price first. I guess it all depends on what the limit would be at the time of buying.

I agree, I would wait. This book is overpriced. And don't be in a hurry, you might find a 2nd Edition for $90.00. We just noticed that a numbered The Stand Portfolio went a month ago for $28.00. So if you wait it out you should be able to find a deal.

My Dark Tower collection is nearing completion, with only the 1st of the Gunslinger being MIA. I'm hoping to find a sealed 2nd edition to save some money - because I could sleep well at night knowing that it COULD be a first under the shrink wrap that will never be opened!

funky dredd
08-10-2007, 10:59 AM
That's all I need is a First Gunslinger. I bought my 2nd edition still in the shrink wrap. I got really lucky and at $200 it was a steal, I bought it from someplace in California and when I talked to the lady she gave me a price of $250, I asked her to hold it for a couple of hours and I called back and talked to a guy, I again asked what the price was and he told me $200. I immediately bought it and as luck would have it he was going to UPS so it was sent just a few minutes after purchase. I don't know how he sent it but I received it on a Monday, I purchased it on a Friday and he didn't even charge me extra. I even got the feeling that they didn't care about the value because it was still in shrink wrap and there were no markings/rips/tears on it at all. They could have charged more.
I'm still saving for a First Edition and I will have one soon. :D

There IS a difference between the dust jackets for the first and second editions that is visible from the outside--I think it's the first has more of a yellow tint to the lettering than the second, which is more orange. I'm not a 100% sure of this (it may be reversed, i.e., the first is more orange) but I'm pretty sure. I only have a first. I don't have any real desire to get a second.

I don't really care which edition it is, I'm just one of those weird people who wants a WHOLE set of something. So any hardcover of the original is fine with me. :)

Do you people think that the prices will get lower and lower?
I saw some books go cheaper (Wizard and glass 1st, The stand (coffin), for example, but there are others that are still very expensive.

The First edition Gunsllinger dustjacket had lettering that was lighter in shade. More of a true yellow. The 2nd edtion was almost burnt orange.
In addition, the first book had brown fabric boards, the 2nd had black.
The first lists the price of $20 for the trade, and $60 for the limited on the inside front dj. The first advertises Conan on the back inside dj. The 2nd has a color picture added to the Conan advertisement.
That's a few of the differences.
First on right in these pictures:

The problem (perhaps not for you-but we shall see) is that what you want is expensive. Plan on spending >$10,000 U.S. for them.

I assume you mean the UK first since you mention the band. I haven't seen any copies lately that still have the band though I'll keep a look out for one.

Both the US and UK versions of thinner had publisher's bands announcing Stephen King writing as Richard Bachman.

The US version was a white band and the UK version was a yellow band.

The whole band business has always puzzled me, i.e. when were they added and why?

Ostensibly, they were added to increase sales. If I have my facts straight the book was first released before the Bachman pseudonym cover was made public. Sales were reportedly reasonable prior to that but really picked up when it became known that Bachman was King. The bands were added to alert bookstore shoppers that this was a King book.

So, to a purist, the banded state is a later state than the unbanded. Is that correct? The presence of a band is deemed desirable but is actually a later "issue."

But wait. The only prepublication state of the book (NAL version) I have ever seen is the softbound "Special ABA Edition" that was handed out at the convention. This is mistakenly (IMO) called a proof by some collectors but really isn't. But I believe it to be a prepublication state. And I have a copy of that book with a band. Was the band present on all these ABA copies? I've always been confused over this. Was the convention held after the King/Bachman pseudonym business was exposed? I had always thought it was held prior to the publication of the book.

Seriously, Randall, I'm not a reach boy and money are always a problem!!!!

I had saved fews money during these years and if I buy these books my bank will remain empty (Fortunately my bank do "Payment by instalments" ).

To buy these books for me mean to renounce to a lot of other things in 2008, believe me.

I know that there are other way to collect books (Step by step, book after book, and so on...) but in 1982 I was less than 6 years old and now these books are "sold out" and if I want thats books I must pay the actual market price :arg:

I'm not a reseller, I would like to buy that books just to have them, because I love that story, that follow me during my teenager years and now take me in a very beautiful place in my head called "Memory", with a lot of images, sounds and fragrances.
If I want these book I must buy them during these mounths becouse I don't know if in the future I will have the economic condition to do.

You are right on all points. I think I read that sales were 30,000 before it was announced and then 300,000 after.

The books with the bands were from the same printing. The store owners were issued with bands by the publisher to put on the copies which were already on their shelves. So they are the same state.

As collectors, we have to have the bands for both US and UK versions

There should not have been a band on your ABA copy. It must have been added later.

The 1984 ABA Convention was held May 26-30 1984 in Washington DC. Thinner was released in November, 1984 with a first printing of 50,000 copies and became # 11 on the 1985 bestsellers list, with total sales in the ~300,000 range.
Supposedly there were pallets of the special ABA version of Thinner available, yet largely ignored by sellers who were clamoring for information regarding The Talisman-which became #1 on the bestsellers list for 1984. One would presume then, that the ABA books had no band indicating that the book was in fact by King.
I believe any ABA Thinner with a band on it, had that band added long after the convention.

There are several items I would like to get but do not have. Just off the top of my head - US and UK proofs of DUMA KEY, Doubleday proof of CARRIE, NEL proofs of King's first five books, and copies of The Maine Campus newspaper in which the story "Slade" was serialized.

There are many non-fiction magazine appearances that I am currently seeking.

That's the beauty (and the frustration) of collecting. There is always something else to look for.

I agree Bob. There isn't a collector who has everything, if they say so he/she is lying. because there have been thousands of releases, besides the books. Whether it be promotional items, magazines, scripts, proofs, manuscripts, and the list will go forever on....

I've got almost all of the issues of The Maine Campus except these. I think it is because they were published during a summer session which typically has less students on campus and, I'm guessing, lower numbers of newspapers printed. I've never seen any of these particular issues offered for sale.

Just within the past several months I finally found a copy of Maine Magazine. I had been looking for one for over 10 years. The March/April 1977 issue was only the second overall issue and I suspect it had limited geographical distribution as well as low print numbers. For me it was an amazingly hard to find magazine.

As to price, I have never seen one for sale as a King collectible so I don't know what a fair price would be. I lucked out and found my copy as part of an eBay listing with several other magazines. The seller didn't know it was collectible and so I got it pretty cheaply. If Stu at Betts had one I wouldn't be surprised to see him ask $200 to $300 for it but, again, I have never seen one for sale.

The Maine Review with Lardass Hogan also goes for $200 or so, depending on the seller, maybe more.

I think that Marshroots with "It Grows On You" is the hardest of the University of Maine publications to find. If you have that one you are way ahead of the game.

Thanks for the useful info B.

If Stu ever manages to get a copy of either, I would be first in line at $200 - $300 each.

The Marshroots mag is the only other item from the seventies I don't have. A copy of it was on ebay a couple of months ago, but a copy is a waste of time as far as I'm concerned.

I will keep looking and hoping I come across one in a garage sale for 25 cents :) You must have been laughing your socks off getting yours so cheap.

For years Stu told me that he sometimes would come across the Maine magazine and that he had sold copies in the past. When I finally found my copy I sent him an image of it and he said that he had never seen a copy of that magazine before. I've seen many large King collections sold over the years (Charlie Fried, Marc Brenner, Chris Cavalier, etc.) and not one has had a copy of Maine magazine. It is just unaccountably scarce and I'm not sure why.

It is actually pretty easy Bob.

The real secret is the "hosting" It allows pictures saved on your hard drive to be placed in one location where they can be easily added to posts.

Two choices there.

You can use our member photo gallery to "host" the images right here on the site. Its very easy. You would then simply copy the link to the image and insert it into any image you like.

Or, you can use any other free hosting service like Imageshack (http://www.imageshack.us) if you would like to have them off site.

If you images are already "hosted" somewhere (other than dt.net because we can't get there), you can simply copy the URL for the image and post it in any thread.

To upload a photo to our gallery.

Simply click the link in the toolbar above, choose "upload photos" in the upper right hand screen.
The first option remains "member galleries"
browse to the image on your computer, put in a title.
Description and key words are optional.
That will automatically set up a gallery for you and you can put as many pictures as you like in there.

Once it is loaded--right click and copy the URL for the image.

Randall Flagg has an amazing tutorial on what to do from here and I can never seem to find it, I am sure he will post a link to it when he reads this (thanks Jerome).

I know it sounds like a lot but its really quite easy, I would love to see photos of your collection

Here's some easy wants for you guys who have like a zillion copies of the same book. Well i've been giving my brother my battered paperbacks so i'm slowly upgrading to hardbacks, i've got most of the new one's but there's plently of holes.

All i'm looking for are hardbacks of the following, they don't have to be 1st's aslong as there not smaller BCA editions and they must be in good condition with no rips to the dj.

Sure I could pick them up on ebay but I figure since you guys are book collectors so your books will be in much better nick, that and these are all mass market books so hopefully someone has a few of the ones I still need so I can knock a few off the list in one go.

- Different Seasons
- Christine
- Cujo
- Night Shift
- Thinner
- Skeleton Crew
- IT
- Misery
- Tommyknockers
- Gerald's Game
- Wizard and Glass
- Bag of Bones
- Revised Gunslinger

Anyone have a 1st, 2nd or 3rd edition Gunslinger for sale ? The 1st and 2nd I will take without a DJ, I have an extra 1st and 2nd dustjacket in ok shape.
The third should be in fairly nice shape most likely, really just looking for decent prices.

Still have that From a Buick 8 S/L #737 to trade for something, if anyone thinks they have a trade let me know.

Would anybody be interested in 1st edition 1st printing copies of Faithful ?
If so i may be able to get about 5-6 copies, i know its not anything to special but my local thrift type store has some brand new copies, full number line, no remainder marks i can find. real cheap, all i would ask is about $10 each
that includes the book, shipping and a brodart cover. That should be about the total cost to do all that, not trying to make any money, just thought it might help out a few people who may need or want that book.
If interested PM me and let me know,
thanks

My boyfriend was looking at my Dark Tower: Gunslinger Born comics collection earlier today before we went to the comic shop for the new Long Road Home issue. Unfortunately, he didn't put them back on their shelf before we left and our puppy destroyed my issue #6 and #7.

The only thing he's ever destroyed or chewed up is books or papers, so I am super dilligent about putting away things, but my boyfriend just forgot. *Sigh*

Anyways, does anyone have an extra copy of the Gunslinger Born #6 and #7? I called my comic book shop and they didn't have any. Let me know if someone has copies I can buy from them. Thanks. :)

Well I'm happy to announce I don't need this book anymore! I had obtained a mint dust jacket a few months ago for $54 including shipping. And just the other day I got a mint as new book with a clipped jacket (which is heading for the DTbay charity auction if anyones interested) for $140 including shipping. Not sure if this is the best place for this post.... but....

Has anyone here ever dealt with "Stephen King Books" on eBay? I believe his ID his beefyreef, or something to that effect.

I'm considering making a trade offer to him, however it would have to be done outside of eBay and I don't want to get screwed.

If anyone has had good or bad experiences with this seller could you let me know?

I believe I may have asked for help on this before but now that our friendly site is growing bigger, I want to ask again.

I am really interested in purchasing the complete Dark Tower series in mass market paperback form. As you may know, some publishers are going with larger paperback books in the style of Lisey's Story and others. I can only find Books 5-7 in this larger mm paperback form. I actually do really like those but the problem for me is that Books 1-4 are in the smaller mm paperback form. I am picky. I would really like to find them all the same size.

I have done some searching on the net and can't seem to find anything out. I saw them all once in the smaller size at the airport but did not pick them up. I am kicking myself because I've not seen them since.
If I remember correctly Daggers said she has them all the same size.

Am I screwed until publishers decide to reprint Books 1-4 in the larger mass market form? Any help would REALLY, REALLY be appreciated.

Thanks! :)

Just select, on the left side of the listings under Search Options on eBay, the "Worldwide" option. You'll get everything from those in the US and UK to the others in Germany, France, etc.

If the seller accepts Paypal, you shouldn't have any problems with payment. They automatically convert to your seller's currency. There may be an extra charge for this from your credit card company, however.

Not all sellers will ship outside their own country. You should also watch this.

I've been trying to find a hc copy of The Waste Lands. Why is this so rare? I haven't found a copy under 100 bucks in either version.

I spoke to someone through email, awhile ago, maybe a year or more ago, who had a Dark Tower 3-7 set numbered under 500. They also knew who had books 1 and 2 to match. I think it was maybe Tippy4 or Pasuik. Whoever it is, if you still have the set, please contact me, and let me know what your asking for it !!

thanks

This could be a real good buy for someone based on the poor auction title.
Not only are you getting the Easton Press edition of the Dead Zone, its the first printing!

looking for a UK connection who can get me UK 1st editions. Not talking about the old expensive hard to find ones, but the newer easy to find ones. Such as Duma Key, Lisey's, Cell, and many of the other newer titles that are easy to come across if yourt not here in the US !!
If anyone is willing to be that connection, or knows of a reputable Uk dealer please let me know, it would certainly help me get my UK 1st edition collection moving a long a bit faster then it is !!
thanks

Rabbit Trick, I might be able to help with some of the things you still haven't got in your collection (your Book Collection link). Maybe we can e-mail together? I must add I only have photocopies, so I can't provide you the whole mag of, say, Stories of Suspense.
Maybe we can do a little trade since you have a few items I might need.
Lemme know.

Also, if anyone else is interested, I would love to trades. I'm a collector myself (obviously) but must confess most of your collections outnumber mine.

But as far as some rare pieces (fiction and non-fiction) I should have something to offer. Lemme know. We collectors should help each other, don't you agree?:)

Sorry, don't have any originals. Only photocopies, a few I'm not really supposed to share, the Drum stories, for instance.
If I ever come across something original, I'll let you know.

There are a couple of guys on here with the original Drum magazines, but they will not part with them. Neither would I, if I had them.

Do you have a photocopy of "The 43rd Dream"?

Yes, I have photocopies of both the Drum tales. I have them scanned and wouldn't mind e-mailing them, but the scans are not to be displayed on a website or distributed to the overall fan community.

Well, now, I find this very interesting. A few years ago I bought the copy of The Drum that has "The 43rd Dream" from Prudence Grant who was the faculty advisor for the student newspaper at Lisbon High School. She found three copies of the issue with "Codename: Mousetrap" (I think that is right) but only a single copy of the issue with "The 43rd Dream." She made no copies.

I sent a copy of the story/poem to only three people (all authors of books about King) with the only request being that they not make further copies or disseminate the story further. It looks like one of the three did not keep their word. I wonder which one it was? I think I know. At least I have my suspicions.

People, I'm close to getting mysef into a jam here, and shouldn't have mentioned the two Drum tales. So I can't share these two tales, it's an "older" promise I had to retell myself to keep. Carlos made me realize that.
So no Drum tales. Sorry 'bout that.

I do have other stuff I AM permitted to share, but that depends, of course, if your collections are far ahead of mine.

out of pure cuiosity, why is that these 2 drum tales are so secretive? and not to be shared with anyone? Just wondering !! so any explanation would be welcomed !

Its nothing to do with secrecy. The collectors paid a lot of money for the originals.

Lots of copies going around would create a decrease in demand and the price could decrease.

It's also illegal and NOT NICE.

I think Mr. Rabbit Trick said it well. There are three or four known copies of The Drum with the story "Codename: Mousetrap" in them. The owners of the other copies are free to do what they want with them....copy them, burn them, bury them, whatever.

I had the only known copy of the issue with "The 43rd Dream." I elected not to copy it. I don't collect photocopies or trade in them. I shared the story with two authors of books about King (one convinced me to share with a third author).

It's really not that big of a deal, I guess. It just always surprises me when people I trust behave in untrustworthy ways.

What year was that? According to my records I bought the two issues of The Drum with "Code Name: Mousetrap" and "The 43rd Dream" in October and November of 2002. It would be REALLY interesting if your dvd was done before that.

I'll keep on looking for the first dvd.

Thanks for the info, just like Ari said in a nother thread, you learn something new everyday ! I had not ever really heard about these 2 stories, or The Drum. Thanks for the info and insight. I totaly understand the photocopy thing. I am a firm believer in the copyright stuff. I had purchased the e-versions of The Plant and wanted to print it out and have a nice copy bound for myself. I emailed with the moderator of King's website and she said so long as i was doing it for my self and not to make multiple copies and sell them, it was fine. Otherwise i was illegally copying and distributing.
So i have nice printed and bound copy done by a local small press place. I would never sell it or produce multiple copies, though

A question out of curiosity since you legally purchased the e-version:

Is the act of you copying it that would be the problem, or is it the selling that would be illegal? In other words, if you had made a few extra nicely printed and bound copies and given them away as gifts, would that also qualify as illegal copying and distributing?

The only way to legally sell an eBook is to delete all copies you own, including backups, after the transaction. Giving away or selling electronic or print copies would be a violation of copyright.

It might have had a real small print run. I'm not sure about this UK edition. But the US version was only a 25,000 copy first printing.
