Keep the picture coming. You have a great collection.

You should post your pictures from stephenkingcollector.com, especially that 'Salem's Lot 1st state DJ.

Yes, and of those pristine copies of Night Shift and The Stand (my retinas still hurt from the insanely white dust jackets ;))

Good to see you here, by the way!

Welcome to TDT.com. Looks like a great collection.

As RF recommends, you can place photos directly into your posts (rather than as attachments) if you upload them to a host first.

Looking forward to seeing more.

I don't understand it, but I will try. Also, why am I not allowed to view my own pictures when I click on the thumbnail?

You need to have 5 posts before you can see them. (This is a security thing) 2 more posts and you will see them.

My rarest SK collectible. The 1st state dust jacket for Salem's Lot.

This is the one I thought folks here would be most interested in - can you tell us some of its background? Where you got it, etc? The fact that it doesn't have a crease in the spine REALLY intrigues me!

I love it that you have a great paperback collection as well! My girlfriend and I collect the older UK NEL paperbacks with the great cover art.

We also have quite some Signet 1st edition paperbacks. But nothing like your awesome PB collection! Let alone your hardcovers.... I think you just nested yourself comfortably among the other top collectors on this forum :)

Holy moley! Thanks for all the comments. I just posted some pictures of The Talisman at The Collector's site.
As for drooling on my books, well, I don't know, I'll have to think about that!
I've been seriously collecting for, damn!, 40 years! But I was born a negative 60 years ago so I'm only 20.
I'm missing some of the early 1st British PBs, but have most of them. I stopped collecting the British editions a few years ago because of the expense, but maybe I'll catch up on those one of these days. I've also been a little dissapointed with some of King's books lately (don't hit me!), so that kind of made me not pursue some of his other editions.
As for Salem's Lot, I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. I think I paid about $250 for it and had absolutely no idea of it's rarity. But it was nice to find out!

The thing that interests me with the 'Salem's Lot is that without the crease in the spine.... it wouldn't have come from the Doubleday art department stash.

So does this mean that some of the $8.95 jackets weren't clipped and WERE available at retail outlets?

Thoughts??

As far as I know, and I wasn't there so this could be wrong, there are no jackets with creases, only the four that were in the 'filing cabinet', WITHOUT creases. I have seen speculations that up to a dozen or so of these jackets exist, but it is just speculation as far as I can tell. I DID NOT get mine at a retail outlet. I don't even remember how I found out about the 3 states of the jacket anymore, that was a long time ago.

I guess it's up to Bob (Carlosdetweiller) to confirm if his 1st state DJ has the spine crease or not. With so few known specimens, statistics in favor of either hypothesis will change dramatically if his DJ has/hasn't got the spine crease :D

Do you think I should crease mine?:panic:

If the version of the Doubleday story I recall is true, then you would have an EXTREMELY rare, potentially one of a kind book there. No creasing!!

couple of questions...

you seem to be pretty much a completist - i saw 2 white on red insomnias.... but no red on white... can't imagine as complete as your collection is you not having one or two... did i just miss them?

also... since you it seems you bought your limited gunslinger early - do you have a complet set? if so, is it listed on the complete set owners thead here?

I don't remember why, but I never got the other INSOMNIA. The 2nd one is a book club edition. There are a lot of gaps in my collection, it is nowhere near as complete as I would like it to be.
I do have a complete set of DARK TOWERS, all the same number, as are Christine, Desperation, etc. The only one I don't have is BLACK HOUSE because I had no money when it was released. I really disliked BLACK HOUSE anyway, so I am not that broken hearted about it.
I was not aware of the complete set owners thread. Thanks for letting me know about it!

I think a recent update to the site got rid of the straight attachment option.

Heres what you need to do:

1) go to tinypic.com (don't need to sign up)
2) find the file, open it - change the "Resize" option to "Message Board" and hit upload.
3) Copy the "Direct Link for Layouts"
4) Hit the insert image button and paste that link.

Those copies of the US paperback firsts--do they both have the numberline starting with "1"? If so, those are fairly scarce--I've heard that about 25,000 of those were printed, split evenly between each color. Virtually all those have "From the Author of The Dead Zone" on the front cover. I have one copy that has the more common (from the later printings) "From the Author of The Dead Zone and Cujo" on it but still has the full numberline. That's the only one I've ever seen.

Yes, both start with '1'. I found one color on the shelf alone and the other in the boxed set, don't remember which color was which though. They both have the "From the Author of The Dead Zone" on the cover. I've never seen a 1st with "From the Author of The Dead Zone and Cujo" on it. My 2nd has that blurb of course.

SALEM'S LOT super rare 1st/1st with 1st state DJ

How can I tell if I have this? Mine has the same dust jacket, (with the view of the town in the "O"), and doesn't say "Book Club Edition", but there are no numbers or indicators of the printing of the book on the copyright page.

biomieg
08-13-2010, 12:35 AM
The dust jacket art is very common - it was used for the original trade hardcovers, for Book Club Editions, and for the early 90's reissue of 'SALEM'S LOT. So the DJ art in itself is not an identifier of a first edition/first printing, let alone for the '1st state' DJ. More on the different DJ states of the first edition of 'SALEM'S LOT can be found here (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showwiki.php?title=Collectibles:Salems+Lot+-+Trade+HC), in the King Collectibles subforum.

In a nutshell: a first edition/first printing book 'SALEM'S LOT is identified by the statement 'First Edition' on the copyright page, and the code Q37 in the gutter of the last page of the book. In addition, there are three 'states' of the DJ: first state has a DJ price of $8.95 and mentions 'Father Cody' on the front inner flap, second state has the $8.95 price clipped and has a $7.95 price printed and retains the Father Cody error, and the third state has an unclipped DJ with the correct $7.95 price and Father Callahan instead of Father Cody. The first state DJ is extremely scarce.

SALEM'S LOT 1st state dust wrapper. There is a tiny tear above the price (figures, doesn't it?) but the rest of it is in great shape. As far as I know all of them were folded where the black meets the white between the spine and back cover. The fold is very hard to see though. I left these pictures at a higher resolution so they are easier to see. How many exist? I don't know. I have heard 3, 5, as many as 12.

Very nice collection!

How did you get your copy of that 1st/1st/1st Salem's Lot?
Just got it before they discovered the errors, or in another way?

Beautiful collection!

I'm sure that tear on the 'Salem's Lot dustjacket is blemishing your otherwise stunning collection. I hate to see it be a burden to you. I'll send you the $8.95 for the book and take it off your hands.

Way back in the last century I just happened to be talking to a bookdealer, and we were discussing the Salem's Lot dust jackets. I had known at the time that there were 2 states, the unclipped and the clipped, and he pulled out an unclipped F dust jacket on a VG + book. Remember, this was only a few years after the book had first been published and I doubt either of us knew at the time what a rarity we had. So I bought it from him for around $250, thinking it would be easy enough to get a better copy of the book later on. 25 or so years later, I had never bought the 2nd or 3rd state jacket, and I was discussing SK with the same bookdealer. Just making conversation, I asked him what is the most expensive SK book out there and when he told me, I thought for a few seconds and then said "I think I've got that! Let me check." I had no idea it was so rare until then.

Brice, I'll take the $8.95, but must adjust for inflation and other economic factors. That comes to, let me see, how does $89,500 sound to you? The 8, 9 and 5 are still there.

Brice
08-14-2010, 04:42 AM
Okay, we're gonna' have to negotiate here...can I at least have free S&H?
The really bad part is if I had $89,500 (and only that) I probably REALLY would buy the book if it was for sale.

Amazing...and a great story too. Do you frequently remind that bookdealer that he sold that to you for $250? I would. :innocent:

I have every issue of this magazine from FALL 1949 to DECEMBER 2005. I quit reading it because of my continuing dissatisfaction with the stories, which, in my opinion, had lessened considerably in quality and interest by then. So that means I need the OCT/NOV 2008 issue.

It should have a large sticker similar to the Nightmares & Dreamscapes one.

http://www.akyle.f2s.com/images/uk_gift.jpg

All the Hodder & Stoughton facsimile bookplate "signatures" were done in blue ink. If you compare the Insomnia / Nightmares & Dreamscapes / Dolores Claibourne bookplates together, you will see that the "blue signature" is exactly the same. It's a "stock" signature.

I wonder why mine doesn't have the label. No sign of one ever being there either. I don't remember who I bought the book from, but it was at publication from a UK book dealer as I recall. Does that make mine less valuable?

biomieg
08-26-2010, 05:27 AM
I'd say it makes it less 'complete' but less valuable... I don't know. My opinion of course. I have seen copies for sale where you could clearly see the glue residue of the removed label on the slipcase and that does make it less valuable. Again, my opinion. But if there's no sign of there ever being a label in the first place?

Did you just get that one? It's also my latest. We were close to moving to Berlin which would have cost a lot of money (ergo, it couldn't be spent on books) but now we are only relocating within The Netherlands so I'm back in the game again. Perhaps we'll be battling over the same proofs in the near future ;)

Holy mother of... Jack Vance volumes. Those are a couple of impressive books! I can't make out the publisher, 2ndfan, where'd those come from?

To make a long story short, Afton House published the Vance Integral Edition (VIE) in 45 volumes, which I was registered to purchase. But when the time came I did not have the money, which I should have borrowed! Anyway, they have now taken all 45 (I think it's 45) books and condensed them into 6 massive volumes, of which I now have I and II. I am paying them off bi-monthly. They are quite heavy, but they are beautiful books and will probably take me a LONG time to read!

Wow, that 45 volume collection would be a sight to behold! I don't doubt that the condensed ones will take a while to read. Those have to be well over 1000 pages and oversized to boot! Very nice.

Here's a linc to a Reader's Set that just sold on E-bay for around $2600, which is coinsidered a good price.
