View Full Version : SK Illustrated Companion: Do you want to order a signed copy?

Bev Vincent

I've never done one of these before, so I hope I don't mess it up.

I'm taking a survey to see how many people would be interested in purchasing a signed copy of The Stephen King Illustrated Companion from me so I'll know how many copies to order from the publisher.

Voting yes isn't a commitment on your part -- I just want to know a ballpark figure, whether it's 5, 15, 25 or 50.

Feel free to add your name to the list here, too, so I can contact you when the books are available.

I plan on getting the book, so would much rather get a signed copy right from you than from B&N.

I'd love a signed copy, and would much rather get it directly from you.

Count me in too - if you're willing to ship abroad of course (and I wouldn't be surprised if you don't :))

If I can figure out the postage costs in advance, I'll be happy to mail overseas.

Great! I'm sure it will be costly given the size of the book but I'm used to that :arg: 95% of my collection was bought via eBay - from the US and the UK - and shipped to The Netherlands... quite often the shipping costs are higher than the actual costs of the book itself!

Of course I want a signed copy! That means I'll be buying two--one regular copy for reading and the signed copy for my collection.

The book will be $25 + shipping. I'll have to figure out the shipping costs for domestic, Canada and overseas.

I would love to, but I have to plan on what to buy when so I wouldn't necessarily be able to buy it right away. For example, all my spare $ at the moment is being saved for Screamfest (http://spookyempire.com/).

ETA: I'm so sorry that I forgot to add that I think it is beyond cool that you're doing this. http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo194/TheCuteWoofer/Smilies/Sci-Fi/tomservo.gif

You can add my name to the list, and I will be able to do grunt work for you if you can get me a "packed weight" of the package, I will let you know what shipping will be for all! HE HE
It's what I do, so I can do it fast!

The weight and dimensions concern me in terms of international shipping. It's a large book, about the same size as a sheet of printer paper, and I don't know how thick yet.

There's a priority international flat rate box, but it's only about 6 x 9. Too small. There's also a flat rate envelope ($13) for up to 4 lbs that might hold the book, but it may not be sturdy enough. The next option up the line is a priority regular mail flat rate box that is 11" x 8-1/2" x 5-1/2" that costs $42 to send overseas, and I'm not even sure the book will fit in one of those! I suspect shipping will probably be too expensive for most people.

Does anyone know of other options? Fed-Ex/UPS/DHL? Figure 9 x 12 x 2" and 3-4 lbs.

if the flat rate enveloppe would fit it and hold it, it would be great for me.... but it's a if i guess

Bev Vincent
09-03-2009, 03:02 AM
Yeah, I'll have to wait to get my copies to check out the options. There used to be a "slow boat" option that was cheap, but that seems to have gone the way of the dinosaurs.

And it's not like the pirates that are going to inevitabely steal the ship can read the book anyway.

Bev, surface mail doesn't exist anymore. Although, there is a way called M-bag. Check that out. Up to ll pounds it costs one amount, and after that goes up by pound.

It's a shame as I, like everyone here, would love a signed copy but i'll have to pass, i'm not too gutted though as it's the content you've put in the book i'm more excited about!.

Not a surprise though, there's no-way an individual can offer international shipping for anywhere close to the same price as a store like B&N can.

I wouldn't really recommend the cheaper shipping option either, the books going a long way and the cheaper the shipping the longer it's going to take so more chance of damage. Same with those envelope options, yeah you might squeeze the book in but how durable are those things?. Wouldn't want a nice looking book arriving with bashed in corners from the shipping companies throwing it about.

frik
09-04-2009, 11:54 AM
Please don't go for the envelope option: much too flimsy.
I'd rather pay more for shipping if sent in a box.

(although, I missed the above posts, this seems to be very expensive....:orely:)

Well, this is a first for me. I just got a box with five "contributor" copies of the book inside.

I think the book came out real well and am very much looking forward to reading Bev's text. Everyone on this site really needs to get a copy. I can guarantee you will like it. (And, no, I don't get royalites. I just know everyone will like it.)

Mine should be here Monday! From everything I've seen, it looks phenominal. Congrats on the contributor copies, Bob. How's it feel to be one of them for a change? :wtf:

I'm glad to hear that the publisher sent you a batch of copies, and that you're pleased with the way the book turned out. I am thrilled. Looking forward to hearing what others think after you've had a chance to peruse it.

I don't know. Different. Kind of cool, I guess. It was gratifying to see an acknowledgment from Bev and my name credited with quite a few of the images and documents. I'm pleased to have been part of something that is pretty neat.

I'm still waiting to hear from B&N, but it's not happening quickly so if you're eager to get a copy maybe it's best not to wait at this point.

I'm not getting any response on this issue from the publisher, so my advice is: if you want to get a copy of the book, go ahead and order it from bn.com. Sorry, but it doesn't look like I'm going to be able to sell them directly.

Just ordered a copy. Now I have to wait a week before I see it.

Bev Vincent
10-06-2009, 02:12 AM
They're all "out of stock" as they're still awaiting the first shipment, as far as I know. Could be another week or so before it lands in brick & mortar stores.

@Bev Vincent: For the Dutch version of "The road to the Dark Tower" you offered signed bookplates. I was very happy with that option. Perhaps it's a possibility for this book as well?

Yes, I've been thinking about doing that. I just need to find a little spare time to design them and print them. Stay tuned!

Here's a new interview (http://www.examiner.com/x-10951-Birmingham-Speculative-Fiction-Examiner~y2009m10d7-Kings-Companion-An-interview-with-Bev-Vincent). Excuse the pop-up from Netflix if you happen to get one...

I finally got this book. I thought it was awesome. All of the backstories are awesome. I think the critical analysis or summaries of the book weren't necessary. I would have loved more backstories or more on other books.
Will SK still not talk about Maximum Overdrive? He doesn't have a sense of humor about it yet?
But the book is great Bev, thanks for making it.
