Don Brautigam.

He also did the paperback cover for THE STAND and, I think, the hardback cover for SKELETON CREW and probably others. Did a bunch of hardback covers for Koontz, too. Centipede Press has done a whole book featuring his work and he will have a good sized section in their upcoming SK Artists book.

Don Brautigam

Brautigam, Donald P. (b. Sept. 12, 1946 d. Jan 27, 2008 ) American artist. Born in Paterson, New Jersey. Brautigam graduated The School of Visual Arts in 1971. He was married to Diane, and had two sons Daniel and James who is also an Artist. Influences include Gilbert L. Stone and Doug Johnson, fellow illustrators and teachers at School of Visual Arts., most of all his father, Curtis. The people that he has enjoyed working with most over his career were Ann Spinelli, Art Director for Putnam Publishing and Dean R. Koontz, both had great ideas, and were good friends. Brautigam worked with acrylics on boards, with a mixture of airbrush and brush combined. He has done numerous advertisements, magazine covers, record/ CD covers, hardcover and paperback covers. His mass-market cover for Stephen Kings The Stand was awarded Cover of the Year by Marketing Bestsellers in 1980, and he has a numerous amount of other awards and commendations. Brautigam's mesmerizing color work redefined paperback and hardcover jacket art. In addition, he excelled in portraits, record sleeves, and information graphics. He is also well known for being the pioneer of using black paint on book illustrations which revolutionized the illustration industry. More than thirty years later, his original method is still the archetype upon which vast amounts of contemporary illustrations are based.

He was also the illustrator for "The Monster in the Closet," a Cujo excerpt published way back in Ladies' Home Journal.

I e-mailed Jim Brautigam (son of Don), and mentioned we had a link to hs site here. I noticed he only had one image of King book art posted. I mentioned perhaps memebers here would help assist in clarifying the list.
Here is his response:

Hi Jerome,

That would be great i would love to get a bit of help! I have read the first 5 of the dark tower series and am getting ready to read Song of Susannah on audio ( i listen to them while i paint ). Needless to say i am a huge fan! We have nearly all of the paintings at my house hanging on the wall! My father passed away about a year ago from cancer, and he had listed the original paintings that were never returned to him ie stolen at the publishers20and record companies (we are in the process of filing the dark tower, tommyknockers, salems lot, and needful things paintings as stolen works). The rest we have at our house, my father never sold any of the Stephen King paintings and we only ever sold one time print reproduction rights and resale of one time reproduction rights for his covers. (i would appreciate if you could in any way help return these stolen works to our collection.) I must admit that is rather stressful trying to track down stolen paintings. We got an email the other day from ebays copyright dept about fake king prints, i can send it to you if you want... I digress, i would love help listing my fathers complete works! Any assistance you can offer would be great. We have a few versions of the dark tower series which were never used, an alternate gunslinger cover which is really cool and an alternate drawing of the three cover as well, and a bunch or sketches too. I would like to get them all scaned or photographed for you to put on your site as well.

Thanks,
James Brautigam

Welcome Jim!!!!!
We would love to crush anyone selling "fake" prints.
Although we are a peaceful bunch, many members here grow fangs
when it comes to fake anything!!!
Looking forward to seeing those alternate sketches etc of your fathers stuff.

Someone should ask Jerad (@ centipede). He should have a comprehensive list of what have been published

Since Brautigan is present in the book, it's very likely he already talked with him when Jerad adquired the rights to publish Don's works.

According to Jim Brautigam, the original artwork pieces for Needful Things, The Tommyknockers, 'Salem's Lot, and The Dark Tower-The Gunslinger were never returned.
If anyone is aware of their whereabouts, he would appreciate being notified.
These are the images of the four covers:

Thanks, Jerome! Great to hear from his son. Sorry to hear of the theft of some of the originals though.

I think the Dark Tower III cover he did was for the original US oversized paperback with the sort of "cosmic rose" on the front. It had ghostly looking Train on the back that I don't think he did (that appeared in the Stephen King calendar).

Was the cover of "The Dead Zone" that he did the one that was from the movie poster with all the smoky tendrils going back along the bottom of the picture and the one beam shooting up in the middle of the picture?

Any news about the sketches and alternate versions of the illustrations Jim talked about?
