This thread will be archived!!

Reason: I felt that this thread was not a good representation of my collection anymore since I sold so much stuff during the past two years. So I decided to remove the outdated pics but I was stupid enough to delete entire posts instead of just deleting the pics. So the conversational flow in this thread has been severly disrupted.

Jerome kindly agreed to archive this thread and I will create a new and fresh one soon. Sorry for being stupid :)

I own a couple of mint dust jackets, among which the awesome Christine S/L one:

http://www.cabecapoeira.nl/king/images/stories/USA/IMG_2750.JPG

and also the Grant Wizard and Glass and Desperation ones, and the Desperation and Regulators trade proof dust jackets.

I was wondering whether any of you guys have considered framing dust jackets? I'm pondering the idea...

I've considered framing the Dark Tower dust jackets. If done properly I think it could really add to a library. But the cost of good quality framing and the dust jackets themselves has often made me think better of the idea.

I agree about the framing costs. On the other hand, the dust jackets I own weren't particularly expensive, so...

(by the way, are there still any DT dust jackets available other than the Wizard & Glass one from the Grant website?)

Yes, that is a nice collection of The Stand, Michaël.

Did you ever pick up a traycase from The Collector for the US 1st/1st editions?

(Side question for anyone: Does the traycase fit the UK 1st/1st as well? Looks like it would.)

Good luck on your quest for the S/L edition!

Just out of curiosity... how much did you pay for the Firestarter jacket?

I paid $40. It was announced in The Collector's latest news letter and I grabbed it probably about 5 minutes after the news letter landed in my mailbox. I'm never sure about the actual value of dust jackets but it seemed a good price to me...

You take such detailed pictures. What kind of camera and lighting do you use?

I have a very basic Canon Ixus camera (not sure if this the right model but you get the idea):

http://bmg.911.bg/BMG/pi/4042689_canon_ixus85_01.jpg

About the lighting, well, we have a black table in the house which provides good contrast and that seems to do the trick; I use the basic 'automated' settings on the camera for everything and the only thing I need to be careful with is where the flashlight glare ends up. In order to do that I usually take a picture where I leave some extra space in the foreground, so the glare will end up in front of the books :) Then, when I upload them to my computer I simply crop the picture to get rid of the flashlight glare and other unwanted peripheral stuff. Occasionally, I also tweak the contrast and brightness of the final image a bit. But that's it, really.

ur2ndbiggestfan
01-07-2010, 06:19 AM
Thanks, I have a similar (I think) SONY DSC-T300. I have a dark brown table so I will try your suggestions out. The glare was my biggest problem, I like your idea of the extra space for the glare. Now if I can only figure out how to post pictures here again!

biomieg
01-07-2010, 07:07 AM
I'm sure the how-to thread for uploading pictures is still around somewhere... for me it's easy: I host all my pictures on my own website so I simply copy the location of the picture by right-clicking on it and choosing 'copy image location' when I'm on my site (this works in Firefox, don't know about other browsers), then I go to the appropriate thread on the forum, click 'reply', click the square yellow image button, and paste the image link in there... and voilá!

I think the hardest part is to figure out where you want to host the pictures: either on the forum in a 'gallery' which you can create, or on a website like ImageShack. Once the picture is hosted somehwere on the Web, it's really just a matter of copying and pasting a link. BUT... I'm sure the designated thread explains it all in a much more eloquent way ;)

biomieg
04-05-2010, 03:18 AM

John, I just stumbled across them and ended up being the highest bidder at $6.50 each. I'm by no means a completist but as I said somewhere not too long ago, I like to 'read' the Bibliography (I'm weird like that) so you can see how I needed these.

Bob, I completely agree with you. There's a lot I don't collect but I always love to see 'subcollections' of others - I understand the feeling that goes into them, even if I don't feel the urge to go out and look for it myself.

Every time I see your and John's proofs I get this almost uncontrollable urge to start hunting for more ARCs for my collection. Then I look at my savings account numbers and the urge blows away like dust in the wind.

Als je 1 enkel boek goed inpakt dan komt dat wel goed. Als ik 1 enkel boek verstuur dan stop ik hem niet eens in een enveloppe, maar pak hem goed in met 'bruinpak'-papier.

Some VERY nice stuff there! Love those King proofs, especially THE STAND.
One question - I recognize the trade (or is that the signed?) THE PASSAGE, but what is the one to the right of it?

biomieg

Thanks guys! There are two copies of THE PASSAGE - the US trade HC on the left (not signed) and the UK trade paperback, which is my reading copy.

My girlfriend and I aren't prolific collectors by any means but still we had well over 1,000 books to unpack... the joy! I like the bookcases too, they're very simple but they serve our purpose well. I am still planning to add glass-fronted doors to them, though.

I HATE moving my books when I move house (~2500) but there is nothing quite like unpacking and re-organizing! I think it's funny how many people around the world use the Billy Bookshelves. Most of mine are that model too. You have a really great collection, Michaël!

ur2ndbiggestfan

Is that the numbered proof you were looking for?

Tim gave me an idea. Everybody count their books and post the total here, to the EXACT count, don't forget to separate paperbacks, trade paperbacks, proofs, partial proofs, hardcovers, etc. (Ok, I'm kidding).

biomieg
01-19-2011, 11:04 PM
Well, I did exactly that last year and at that time we had 1013 books. Some were sold or given away since then, but I also purchased a number of new ones. The grand total won't have changed much :)

My LibraryThing account claims 2,252, but that discounts the fact I have not updated my wife's half of the library in some time and that I've several stacks of my new books that remains to be entered. Also, that number needs to be reduced by the several boxes of books that are stacked behind the couch waiting for the spring "holy-crap-I-have-too-many-books-everything-for-$1" yard sale.

Patrick
01-21-2011, 12:31 AM
Cool idea, but there is no way I am going to go try to count every book. I'll read the numbers you all post with great interest though.

Congrats on all the recent proofs, including that numbered UTD!

Thank you, my friend. I will have to take some new pics eventually - I sold a LOT of stuff and yes, I got some nice new things as well. Maybe next week? My girlfriend is going to China for a week so there won't be much activity around the house and it will serve as a nice distraction.

It's cool, but not quite my cup of joe. I'm a sucker for dust jackets and cover art. Thanks anyway!
Any US firsts up for grabs? Did you move your 'Salem's Lot?

biomieg
04-19-2011, 11:14 AM
I'm a sucker for dust jackets and cover art. Me too! That's one of the reasons I'm selling it.

Let me think... the Danse Macabre on the left is a US 1st and is for sale if you want it - it now has a protective cover which makes it look a lot better, but I'm sure you can get a better copy and pay less for shipping. The 'Salem's Lot is also still for sale. Other than that... I only have a couple of redundant UK editions. Send me a PM if you want to work something out! :)

Loving this collection! I've just spent the best part of an hour drooling over this thread! I'm particularly happy to see love for the NEL paperbacks, these were just coming out when I started collecting King in earnest, and so they remain special to me also. I have most of them, except On Writing, Dreamcatcher, From a Buick 8, Everything's Eventual, as I had those in hardback. For some reason I have Hearts in Atlantis in both NEL p/b and the HC, but I couldn't tell you why! Oh, I don't have The Running Man either, as that's in the the Bachman anthology, I've never understood why that was the only one that stayed in print separately.

All of which is nothing to do with anything, I wanted to post something that will either help or hinder! I noticed your annoyance at the fact that On Writing doesn't exist in the same format, only in that matching-but-larger p/b. I think this may not be the case. I'm not entirely certain, but I've got an inkling that there were actually two versions of this, the one that you have and one that actually does match the others in size. Amazon has two likely listings (I believe the first one is yours, it has the red circle on the front, however reliable these images may be - another listing has the same image for a Simon & Schuster edition! - but you'll be able to check by ISBN of course):
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Writing-Memoir-Craft-Stephen-King/dp/0340820462/ref=sr_1_88?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1304607701&sr=1-88
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Writing-Stephen-King/dp/034076998X/ref=sr_1_89?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1304607701&sr=1-89

I guess I'm being kind of a tease, as I don't remember for certain, and for all I know the other one is in fact trade paperback size! But I almost picked up the ones I mentioned above as only having in hardback, for completion's sake, and I'm all-but-convinced that On Writing was one of them, in the matching format. I'm sure I remember my puzzlement at there being two different copies on the shelf. Or I might just be constructing it in my mind. Your quest may not be over!

And I agree with you that it's a shame the ones published by Warner Books don't match closely enough. I'd particularly like The Eyes of the Dragon to sit nicely with the rest!

Hey, Nadja! Somehow I missed your post. Thanks for your kind words. I haven't yet checked out your links but it's good to know that there is perhaps a NEL copy of ON WRITING that matches the rest of the series.

I see this was your first post, so: welcome! Feel free to engage in the other discussions in 'The Corner'!

Wel, maybe it does! I was planning to wait a bit though, until I have my 'primary' collection where I want it to be (which involves selling some stuff, getting upgrades for some other books and also waiting for a couple of scarce items that I won't get for at least another two months). But I may post a teaser or two this week...

Just got done reading your collection thread (and emailing you multiple times asking for more info on some subcollections you have! lol). But I had to here when I was done so I can officially subscribe to your thread! Yay! Anyway, GREAT collection, you have a TON of great items and I hope my collection is as complete as yours one day (with the inclusion of those AMAZING NEL paperbacks. :))

Hey Shannon my man, thanks a lot! You should realize that I sold a ton of stuff the past year or so, including a lot of proofs and all my remaining Dutch and other foreign editions. I got a lot of nice items in return so I'm still proud of my collection. I'm waiting for a lot of cool items right now but I'll post some new pics of my bookshelves once everything is here (including the stuff from Betts that was sent to the wrong address and is now back on its way to David so he can ship it to Europe again!). Stay tuned!
