View Full Version : The Best Movie Character of All Time

That's right folks, another movie-related tournament to obsess over!

Same layout as the BMOAT, only this time we're dealing with movie characters. There will be a total of 128 nominations, 2 nominations per post - you'll be able to nominate as many characters as you want, but please wait until at least 3 other people have posted before posting your next set of nominations. You can nominate multiple characters from the same movie.

IMO, the (aspiring) winner of the tournament should embody most if not all of the following characteristics :

Be instantly recognizable
Have quotable lines
Have a deep impact on cinema as a whole

Like I said, this is strictly my opinion, and I'm sure many people here will like characters for very different reasons :)

Once all 128 characters have been named, I will use a list randomizer to sort them into groups of 8 and start posting the groups.

So, have at it! I'll start us off :

1. The Joker
2. Hannibal Lecter

13. Maximus Decimus Meridius (Gladiator) - quotes? "What we do in life echoes in eternity." or how about
"My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next. "

search no farther, this is the one.:rose:

I went back and numbered mine. Good idea, Heather.

Question: Mike Myers the actor or Michael Myers the killer who has no lines in the original Halloween or Michael Myers in RZ's Halloween?

17. Rosencrantz and Gildenstern, Rosencrantz and Gildenstern are Dead

Guildenstern: Don't you discriminate?!

Rosencrantz: England? I don't believe in it.
Guildenstern: What? A conspiracy of cartographers?

Rosencrantz: Did you ever think of yourself as actually dead, lying in a box with a lid on it?
Guildenstern: No.
Rosencrantz: Nor do I, really. It's silly to be depressed by it. I mean, one thinks of it like being alive in a box. One keeps forgetting to take into account the fact that one is dead, which should make all the difference, shouldn't it? I mean, you'd never *know* you were in a box, would you? It would be just like you were asleep in a box. Not that I'd like to sleep in a box, mind you. Not without any air. You'd wake up dead for a start, and then where would you be? In a box. That's the bit I don't like, frankly. That's why I don't think of it. Because you'd be helpless, wouldn't you? Stuffed in a box like that. I mean, you'd be in there forever, even taking into account the fact that you're dead. It isn't a pleasant thought. Especially if you're dead, really. Ask yourself, if I asked you straight off, "I'm going to stuff you in this box. Now, would you rather be alive or dead?" naturally, you'd prefer to be alive. Life in a box is better than no life at all, I expect. You'd have a chance, at least. You could lie there thinking, "Well, at least I'm not dead. In a minute somebody is going to bang on the lid, and tell me to come out."

Rosencrantz: "Hey you! What's your name? Come out of there!"
Guildenstern: [long pause] I think I'm going to kill you.

[B]18. Walter Neff, Double Indemnity

"Who'd you think I was anyway? The guy that walks into a good looking dame's front parlour and says, "Good afternoon, I sell accident insurance on husbands... you got one that's been around too long? One you'd like to turn into a little hard cash?" "

"How could I have known that murder could sometimes smell like honeysuckle?"

"Same chair? Same perfume? Same anklet?"

19. Dr. Frederick Frankenstein from Young Frankenstein

"It's pronounced "Fronkensteen."

"My grandfather's work was dodo!"

"Destiny! Destiny! No escaping destiny!"

"A sedagive?!"

22. George Bailey, It's a Wonderful Life

I wish I had a million dollars... Hot dog!

Well, you look about the kind of angel I'd get.

Dear Father in heaven, I'm not a praying man, but if you're up there and you can hear me... Show me the way... show me the way...

I wanna live again. I wanna live again. Please, God, let me live again.

23. Rick Blaine, Casablanca

Ilsa: A franc for your thoughts.
Rick: In America they'd bring only a penny, and, huh, I guess that's about all they're worth.

Here's looking at you, kid.

I stick my neck out for nobody.

I don't mind a parasite. I object to a cut-rate one.

Yvonne: Where were you last night?
Rick: That's so long ago, I don't remember.
Yvonne: Will I see you tonight?
Rick: I never make plans that far ahead.

Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, she walks into mine.

Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

32. Henry II
"I found out the way your mind works and the kind of man you are. I know your plans and expectations - you've burbled every bit of strategy you've got. I know exactly what you will do, and exactly what you won't, and I've told you exactly nothing. To these aged eyes, boy, that's what winning looks like!"

33. Eleanor
"I even made poor Louis take me on Crusade. How's that for blasphemy. I dressed my maids as Amazons and rode bare-breasted halfway to Damascus. Louis had a seizure and I damn near died of windburn... but the troops were dazzled."

34. Richard
"I don't care what you offer Philip, I don't care what plans you make. I'll have the Aquitaine and Alais and the crown. I'll not give up one to get the other. I won't trade off Alais or the Aquitaine to that walking pustule! No, your loving son will not."

35. Geoffrey
Geoffrey: I can handle John. He'll swallow anything I tell him. I'll take him by the hand and walk him into the trap you set.
Eleanor: You're good. You're first class, Geoff. You'd sell John out to me, or me to John, or... you can tell me... have you found some way of selling everyone to everybody?
Geoffrey: Not yet, mummy, but I'm working on it.

36. John
"Who says, "poor John"? Don't everybody sob at once. My God, if I went up in flames, there's not a living soul... who'd pee on me to put the fire out."

37. Alais
"I don't know who's to be congratulated. Kings, Queens, knights everywhere you look, and I'm the only pawn. I haven't got a thing to lose. That makes me dangerous."

"Y'all know me. Know how I earn a livin'. I'll catch this bird for you, but it ain't gonna be easy. Bad fish. Not like going down the pond chasin' bluegills and tommycods. This shark, swallow you whole. Little shakin', little tenderizin', an' down you go. And we gotta do it quick, that'll bring back your tourists, put all your businesses on a payin' basis. But it's not gonna be pleasant. I value my neck a lot more than three thousand bucks, chief. I'll find him for three, but I'll catch him, and kill him, for ten. But you've gotta make up your minds. If you want to stay alive, then ante up. If you want to play it cheap, be on welfare the whole winter. I don't want no volunteers, I don't want no mates, there's just too many captains on this island. Ten thousand dollars for me by myself. For that you get the head, the tail, the whole damn thing."

Quint: [seeing Hooper's equipment] What are you? Some kind of half-assed astronaut?
[examining the shark cage]
Quint: Jesus H Christ, when I was a boy, every little squirt wanted to be a harpooner or a sword fisherman. What d'ya have there - a portable shower or a monkey cage?
Hooper: Anti-Shark cage.
Quint: Anti-shark cage. You go inside the cage?
[Hooper nods]
Quint: Cage goes in the water, you go in the water. Shark's in the water. Our shark.
[sings]
Quint: Farewell and adieu to you, fair Spanish ladies. Farewell and adieu, you ladies of Spain. For we've received orders for to sail back to Boston. And so nevermore shall we see you again.

"Here's to swimming with bow-legged women!"

74. Bill Munny (Unforgiven)

The Schofield Kid: [after killing a man for the first time] It don't seem real... how he ain't gonna never breathe again, ever... how he's dead. And the other one too. All on account of pulling a trigger.
Will Munny: It's a hell of a thing, killing a man. Take away all he's got and all he's ever gonna have.
The Schofield Kid: Yeah, well, I guess they had it coming.
Will Munny: We all got it coming, kid.

Little Bill Daggett: Well, sir, you are a cowardly son of a bitch! You just shot an unarmed man!
Will Munny: Well, he should have armed himself if he's going to decorate his saloon with my friend.

Little Bill Daggett: You'd be William Munny out of Missouri. Killer of women and children.
Will Munny: That's right. I've killed women and children. I've killed just about everything that walks or crawled at one time or another. And I'm here to kill you, Little Bill, for what you did to Ned.

Um, he's sick. My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious.

In Group A, Lon Chaney is the actor, not the character. That should be changed before the voting. Perhaps just clarify the source, in fairness, as (The Phantom of the Opera, 1925)

In Groups C, I, J, and L, the film The Lion in Winter currently is misnamed "The Lion in the Winter." (Look: Eleanor and Alais are already up against each other.)

In Group P, I suggest changing to Vinny Gambini (My Cousin Vinny).

Well, there's one oversight that's just unforgivable.
I don't much care who actually wins here.
The real greatest movie character of all time is plain and simple.

that's their error and should be remedied as soon as possible. :)

Sam
10-12-2009, 03:52 PM
It's not that easy to remedy though since there is very little GOOD quality video of the Chaplin films available. It's been a few years since I tried to get some, but back then most of the Chaplin films I could find (many of them classics like The Gold Rush and The Great Dictator) looked like they had been xeroxed twelve times before they were transfered to video.

Jean
10-12-2009, 10:59 PM
I could agree that the Tramp is one of the best characters of all times, but only with my mind: because I know that it is so, and because I understand how great what he did was; but it's all purely mental activity. I am terribly bored by all Chaplin movies and his characters do not touch me in any way that would matter; I could vote for him, as it were, intellectually, but never with my heart and soul (although, once again, I understand that he is supposed to be very touching, and I believe it, and I know he is the main predecessor and essential ancestor of many a character I love). I mean, he is important for me historically, but not actually.

Sam
10-13-2009, 07:56 AM
That is a very astute observation brother bear. I always found the character a little dry and thought his capacity for humor greatly outweighed his ability for drama.

pathoftheturtle
10-13-2009, 08:56 AM
:o Well, maybe it's just me, then.
I love humor, especially dry humor.
Also, I'm a big softie... but I'm more of a classicist than some. I really was very moved in my way by so many scenes... and though it may not be true drama, many of his films really were effective in message.
It's cool, tho, you guys don't have to share my opinion.
I'm still pretty comfortable. :)

While we're on it, though, what do you think of Red Skelton? (No, wait, don't tell me. One star slighted is plenty.)

Jean
10-13-2009, 09:19 AM
I don't think "slighting" is the word... I absolutely admire Chaplin for everything he did, for his contribution to the art of cinema in many respects, and for being the father of tragicomedy in cinema. I only said that his art did't do anything for me personally, as a spectator (well, I think I could concede Limelight... it touched me... but far from making even my top 100 anyway), except The Great Dictator which I like for obvious reasons.

It does surprise me a bit, though, that you appear to be saying that the tramp's not visceral enough for you, Jean, when it seems generally that you are with the common arguement that today's films are too hooked on being graphic. :orely:

Sam

Incidently, I love Red Skelton. I love Chaplin's work as well, I simply think that the character is a little more one dimensional than people want to believe he is.

Ladies and Germs, we are now entering the Octa-Finals! :D

As with the BMOAT, I will take the 1st place from each group (nominee with most votes) and pit it against the 2nd place from the subsequent group - 1st place from Group A will take on 2nd place from Group B, and 2nd place from Group A will take on the 1st place from Group B - all the way down the list. I have highlighted in blue all of the nominees that made it to the next round, as well as a number indicating whether they were first or second place within their respective group.

I'm planning on making an excel spreadsheet which will map out the 'playoff' phase to give everyone a better idea of how everything will play out.

I'll post the first 3 brackets later today! Good luck with the voting! :D
