Here's the publisher's copy:

An interactive approach to King’s greatest works, The Stephen King Illustrated Companion features a wealth of unseen memorabilia from the author’s desk and insightful text that reads between the lines to uncover King's own compelling biography. Supplemented with rare and previously unpublished ephemera from King’s archives, such as hand-edited manuscript drafts, revealing letters between King and his editor, and personal mementos from his career, this unique companion volume tangibly illuminates the writer's works and life in a way never done before.

From the back cover:

Exploring Where Savage Things Grow...

With thousands of horrific pages published since the first lines of Carrie, Stephen King's gripping perennial fiction has earned him the rightful appelation "The Master of Modern Horror." The Stephen King Illustrated Companion takes a critical look at King's most iconic works and reads between the lines to uncover the personal influences and demons as reflected in each monster, epidemic, and depraved character. Unseen family photographs and 16 pieces of previously unpublished ephemera--such as handwritten manuscript notes, typed early drafts, lengthy journal entries, and doodles for King's college newspaper--complete this tangible tour. Packed with fascinating biographical details, literary interpretations, and personal memorabilia, The Stephen King Illustrated Companion is a must-have addition to any true fan's library.

I'll have to figure that out when the time comes. It's going to be a large book (the page proofs were printed on A4 sheets and that was at a reduced size!) so shipping it back and forth isn't going to be cheap.

Bev Vincent

The concept here is that the book is a reader's companion. Since I couldn't cover King's entire career, I picked titles that were distributed across his career and were also among the more popular books, the ones that the average reader would be sure to know. However, I also picked books that had a significant biographical context. So, each book chapter is essentially partly about where King was in his life at the time he was working on the book and partly about how that might be seen to play out in the story. Biography through literary analysis.

The photo and documents researcher went after material that ties in well with my text.

Each chapter has two, three or more sidebars, self-contained items that relate to the text, though sometimes only marginally. Barnes and Noble loves sidebars!

Bev Vincent

I suspect there won't be any proofs, since Barnes & Noble takes a different approach to marketing these companions. They simply place a stack of them on tables at the front of the store in heavy traffic areas and the books essentially sell themselves. I don't believe they attempt to elicit reviews, for example.

Sounds like a cool book i'm a sucker for stuff like this, I bought your Dark Tower one but i've not read it (can't read it till i've finished the Dark Tower books can I lol). I have to say that the cover is excellent, very smart and classy.

When you say large, is that in terms of page count? or in terms of the dimensions of the page?, if the latter can you give us an estimated size?.

edit

I obviously don't read threads well, just noticed you have already posted the dimensions up above. I hope this will be available on Amazon, or is it B&N exclusive?.

Bev Vincent
07-30-2009, 03:25 PM
It is a B&N exclusive. There's a chance it might be available in some of the club stores like Costco and Sam's Club, too, but Fall River Press is Barnes & Noble -- their imprint. The book was commissioned by them as part of their reader's companion series. (Previous books include one on Poe by Harry Lee Poe and one on Jane Austen). The books are absolutely gorgeous, high production values, and it's so much fun opening the little envelopes to discover what's inside. The documents and photo specialist on this one got very much into the game, and the envelopes may be decorated with a familiar icon. I haven't seen the final product yet, just the unbound pages.

mae

I saw a price of $24.98 on Bev's site. But that's normal for B&N. They recently put out that huge HP Lovecraft book and it was something like thirteen bucks.

It'll be 176 pages. But big pages.

Bev Vincent

I've had several people inquire about proofs of The Stephen King Illustrated Companion. There won't be any. This isn't being published like a traditional book. Barnes & Noble isn't interested in getting advanced reviews. They will simply plonk the books down in prominent places in their stores and list it on their website and expect it to sell itself, basically. I received a PDF of the near-final version for proofing and layout review, but there won't be any physical galleys.

John:

I haven't figured that out yet. It depends on how easy it will be for me to get discounted copies from B&N, and I don't currently have any direct communication with them, since I worked with the intermediary publisher, becker&mayer. I'll have to check my contract.

At a minimum, I'll accept copies to be signed by mail if they're sent with return postage, but if the demand is high enough, I'll see what I can do to sell copies directly, which would cut down on half the shipping charges (which won't be trivial for this big book!).

Yeah, I would have loved to write about Salem's Lot, but with Carrie in the intro, and The Shining which had so much autobiographical material and The Stand, which was simply mandatory in my opinion, something had to go or else the book would have been pretty much 1970s!

Salem's Lot isn't ignored, but it doesn't receive as much attention as the focal books.

I think it's fairly safe to say that there won't be an S/L edition.

mae
09-10-2009, 08:33 AM
Wow, and I thought this book couldn't get any better. This is a stunning tome. And the fact it's being sold so cheaply because it's a B&N production is amazing. If Scribner or some small press had this idea, it'd be five times as expensive. This is a must-have for any King collector. And of course a huge thanks to King for letting these rarities see light of day finally. I still holding out hope for an authorized collection of all uncollected and unpublished stories.

Sam
09-10-2009, 08:37 AM
No S/L?:( Such a shame. If I were better able to publish a book, I would offer to do it. Alas, the best I (by "I" I mean my printer) can do is a softcover that's either saddle stitched or comb bound. I like the saddle stitched, but I'm pretty damn certain it wouldn't do your work justice.

Bev Vincent
09-10-2009, 09:38 AM
I think you're going to be impressed by the production quality of this trade edition. Really, there's not much more that could be done to turn this into a deluxe edition. And who wants to pay a bunch more just to add my illegible scrawl to the binding? Seriously, when I saw the previous books this company produced -- the Poe companion, a book about Kurt Cobain that has a bound in CD, the Marilyn Monroe book, a book about Marvel, the Jane Austen companion -- I was sold on the project.

Sam
09-10-2009, 11:14 AM
Bev, your illegible scrawl actually means something to someone who loves books. I don't collect signatures, I collect books. I keep most of the books I read (I have very few of those I didn't enjoy) and view the signatures I have as icing on the cake. I have a few signed limiteds, but it's the signatures where I have met the authors that mean more to me. Now that I have met Stephen King (a lifelong dream) that signed copy of Just After Sunset is virtually priceless. I will not sell it at any price, nor will I sell any of my other signed books because I look at those signatures and inscriptions and I remember seeing and talking with the writer. I have one signed King book that I bought already signed and it has very little meaning to me. Nice edition and in great shape, but no meaning. The S/Ls that I have are for the book itself and are beautiful editions. I keep them as art pieces, not for the signatures (well not anymore).

Does buying a signed book from you via the internet have the same meaning for me that meeting you in person would? No, but it does give the signature meaning since we have talked through this forum. That is what I enjoy about the signed books I have; the meaning behind the signatures.

If I buy the book from you, that means that you signed the book for me (even if you just grabbed it from a stack of signed books, you grabbed the book for me). If I buy it from ebay, that means you just signed the book and there is no connection to me in the book anywhere. I hope you understand what I mean, but I will sum it up in this simple phrase. It ain't about you; it's about me. :P

Maybe I didn't express myself clearly. What I meant to say is that the only thing that an S/L edition would have that this edition doesn't is my scrawl, and you can get that for the price of round-trip postage.

This very affordable book has more bells and whistles than most limited editions you'll see for ten times the price. Now, maybe it's not printed on imported French paper or bound in leather, but it does have a silver spine!

I didn't really get any say in the title. George Beahm complained to me about this title, too, because it's so close to one of his, but it was B&N's decision.

This calls for another tease:

A look inside The Shining. The title page, dated May 13, 1975, still bears King's original title, The Shine, along with a handwritten note to Bill Thompson. Three pages from the original manuscript show how King changed his mind about Danny's encounter with the fire hose outside room 217 in Chapter 19. The first draft of "Inside 217" --the famous bathtub scene--containing King's hand-written revisions and annotations. In this draft, Danny's mother is named...(you'll have to check out the book to find the answer to that question!)

Glad to hear that you like it!

I think owning this book should be a requirement to be a member of this site. Ban for life if you don't have it.

I'm eagerly awaiting my copy... it was shipped last Friday, and typically books from the US take anywhere from about 6 days to a couple of weeks to arrive on my doorstep. Looking forward to it!

My copy was delivered yesterday, but I didn't find it until this morning. The UPS driver left it inside my front door, which we almost never use. I checked the delivery status this morning and found out it had been delivered. I opened my front door to look on the porch and there it was, between the storm door and the front door. I can't wait to start perusing it!

If my wife and I hadn't been sitting at the dinner table gabbing the night my contrib copies arrived, we probably wouldn't have discovered them until sometime the next day. I heard the truck pull up and stop, but I didn't hear him bring the two big boxes to our front door. About half an hour later, I thought to go check and there they were!

when will this book be available at B&N or Borders again?

Bev Vincent
09-30-2009, 05:32 AM
It's available at Barnes & Noble online (http://search.barnesandnoble.com/The-Stephen-King-Illustrated-Companion/Bev-Vincent/e/9781435117662/?itm=1&USRI=stephen+king+illustrated+companion) right now, and should be in their stores within the next week or two. It's up to the individual stores when they put it out on display, but you could always ask for it.

It's only at B&N, not at Borders.

So mine arrived today and while I LOVE it (so many cool little items!!), the cover on the copy I received looks a little beat up and scratched. :arg: Looks like a warehouse thing, I think, but jeez - it's not like they've been hanging out there for months! It also makes me wonder if some of the "goodies" might be missing even though it appears okay.

Bev, are these supposed to be shrinkwrapped? I think I'm going to take it to my local B&N and see if they'll let me trade it off for a more pristine copy.

None of the copies I received were shrinkwrapped. Also, the local B&N still hasn't received this, to the best of my knowledge, so you might want to call ahead.

My copy finally arrived!!! :rock::dance::thumbsup:

From what I have looked at and read so far it is just awesome. So much information and the presentation is just fabulous. Bev you did a fantastic job. I am still waiting to find out about getting a signed copy.

In response to gsvac's post, my copy was also a little "beat up" when it arrived. A few dented corners and scuff marks but everything inside appears to be intact. Back to reading......

I got my copy today and don't have anymore time to waste y'all. See you in a few days.:P

My copy, as I said above, arrived yesterday (but I got it this morning) in perfect condition. I haven't yet had time to really go through it, but I did a quick "flip-through" and am very impressed!

i'd like to suggest that those of you who have received it take the time to write a review on the b&n page. it might or might not be good for sales, but it certainly would be good for bev. :couple:

Ms Mod gave the book a thread on SK's MB (http://www.stephenking.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15017) and Wayne Rogers posted a nice review on another thread (http://www.stephenking.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15022).

Ands teh reproductionbs are made to look like the originals - down to the signatures - I know at least one the signature looks as real as can be - as if Sai King singed this reproduction piece! It's hard to tell its a copy!

They look extremely genuine, except for a tiny "REPRODUCTION" notice in the corner.

I was impressed with the attention to detail in the reproductions, too. This was the first time I saw them in production form -- previously I only had low-res printouts.

Justin Brooks did a little detective work into the unknown short story fragment that's in the ledger and came up with the following:

The story is Muffe. An entry from bibliography:

In relation to a handwritten draft of Sleepwalkers entitled Tania's Suitor.

Note: This journal also contains handwritten fragments of “The Library Policeman,” “The Langoliers,” “Head Down,” “Chattery Teeth,” [Untitled] (“Chip Coombs”), “The Evaluation,” “Movie Show,” “Muffe,” The Dark Tower III: The Waste Lands, Needful Things, Insomnia, “Argument” (for The Dark Tower III: The Waste Lands) and notes for Needful Things.

No problem dude.

This book is fucking AMAZING!!! The reproduction material alone is worth the price of the book. PLUS you get all the other stuff. I LOVE it!!

Today I got a note from Fedex that they'd tried to deliver a package... so I'm guessing Bev's book has arrived in Holland (the only other thing I've got coming from The States is the UTD hardcover ARC and I seriously doubt that it was FedExed). Unfortunately I wasn't home to sign for it so I'll have to wait until Monday...

You'll have to order the book at the B&N website. I did too, they ship worldwide and I think I paid a total of about $36 including shipping.
