View Full Version : unnecessary junk references

So I just started reading the tower books again. (I haven't done a re-read since book 7) anyways, I have always wanted to know if I was the only one who rolls there eyes and hates all the references to balls and masterbating and that sort of thing in Stephen King's books. I'm not sensitive or anything but they always seem so out of place and they bring me out of the story. I have learned to just read over them so it doesn't matter soo......or is it b/c I'm a girl and males actually think like that and it's not really that strange?:P

some examples would be nice, I can't think of any reference right now, other than Roland talking about a sandwich ;)

as in roland thinking "at least i jerk off with my left hand" in the beginning of tdott

is there a book search on this site like the one on tdt.net?

I actually like the "junk" references, man!
Not in a "Oh, now here's my chance to picture a pair of bollocks" kinda way, but because it adds a bit of humour to the situations. It's King's way of writing, and this is an aspect I enjoy. Sometimes it's a little shocking, and that's better still! It relates Roland to most other guys in the world, also, which makes him seem more...human, I guess.

Yeah, I like 'em. :P

i actually dont find SK that bad with his references, and if he does its usually within keeping with the story or as an injection of humour (aka our quote)

the worse writer ever for just throwing in a dick and a fuck is james herbert, read any one of his books and i can guarantee a sex scene or a random jerk off comment

I like the references like this. They remind me how real the characters are.
Thinking of Roland making his journey all over the f'n world without having to satisfy his urges at some point just isn't realistic to me. :)

And I don't think it's just a male's perspective. If I lost my right hand, I'd be a little let down :ninja:

Very true. It's as if someone told him when he was young that there must be a sex scene now and then... and he wishes he could do without it, but alas, law is law, he didn't invent the rule so it isn't up to him to change it...

April: do you think we could move it to Cara Laughs, so we can talk about all King books, not only the DT?

For real!

I'm sure I would think the same thing if I lost some fingers on the "non fun" hand. Be damn glad I had my correct hand in the way a pianist would.

I guess that's kind of the same thing.

I think King has a knack of making his characters very real in that way.

Reminds me of an old friend of mine who once famously said to a bunch of us when we were drunk, "sometimes I like to masturbate with my left hand because it feels like it's someone else." Sorry, couldn't help but share that one. :beat:

That reminds me of a line in a movie, but I don't remember what it was. Someone said something to the extent of "I like to sit on my hands until they fall asleep, then jerk off cause it feels like it's someone else." :orely:

Wow...this thread took a totally different turn.

I was glad he made that certain reference to losing his fingers, I mean that is how all guys think and it does help to make his characters seem that much more real beacuse you can totally relate to them.

I know what you mean, Jean. I feel the same way with Jean Auel. I love Ayla's story, but learned to skip over the "pleasures" scenes because if I read them I'd get awful tired of her shit fast. There's porn out there people, we don't need the bullshit sex scenes, if I wanted that I'd read Harlequinn Super-Romance novels, or w/e they're called.

I was going to say that the "hand asleep" quote was from Gone in 60 Seconds, too!
Also like Jean Auel..she gets tiring with the "mating", and if she's going to do another book...let's get to it already...
JB..if you like her do I ever have some good ones you'd like..18 books in the series so far...dying for more..
With SK's books..it flows so well that I don't even think twice about the references..'cept maybe a chuckle..I just don't like people throwing in a "fuck" for fuck's sake..Like..ooh..I'll put a fuck here and then another one later....

Couldn't agree more. A few years ago I tried to check out The Shelters of Stone, to see if Auel had let go of her old habits, but alas, no. Threw it away pretty quickly. :(
Now that's a book full of unnecessary "junk" references, if there's one.

OMG...I never met anyone else that's read them..I just finished the last two..People of the Weeping Eye and People of the Thunder..it was to be just one book but their editor told them to make it two..they're the only ones they suggest that you read together..I just can't get enough of them..read one of the trilogies..one of them is autographed...glad to see someone else likes them. People of the Sea was the first one I read..then I went on the hunt for the rest...

My ex wife wouldn't let me name one of the children Sun Chaser or Kestril. (sure that spelling is wrong)...I loved that book.

People of the River was also really good. I had no idea about those two together, I'll have to pick the up after I'm done with Drood.

Have you ever checked out their website..it really explains the last two..I'm about to start with People of the Wolf and read them all again...I would have let you use those names..Can't remember which book it was but so many of the names were so close that I got them mixed up and couldn't tell the men from the women for a while..The Contrary in the last two doesn't hold with come of the other Contraries they wrote about...

Agree JB - I love this series & often re-read it.
But I skip most of those scenes now too. Don't know why she went so far with it - she has a magnificent series of books there that certainly did not need any silly spicing-up to market them (if anything it might do the opposite).
I keep (& keep, & keep) waiting for the next book in the series too - hope she gets to it sometime soon.

Well, this started out as a DT thread, and got moved to Cara Laughs, but maybe it should actually be Dutch Hill: no one has mentioned King for quite a while.
... is it b/c I'm a girl and males actually think like that and it's not really that strange?:PNo, that wouldn't be entirely fair to say. Both genders have some folk with less class than others. I've known girls who tried too hard to match that idea... which can cause no end of trouble. :(

I am very glad that this thread got moved here-- how could we really discuss it without bringing up Richie Tozier? :D

Well, you know... this is part of who SK is. Like some of his characters, there's a side of him that is brash and a little ignorant. Yet it's a side which I am still quite fond of.Such attitudes really can be good at times, like when Eddie Dean saved his tet from Blaine.

Actually me too! And I rarely stop reading books.

As for the mention of, er hands, I had a mate who told me he liked to put his hand in the fridge to make it numb so it felt like someone else. (I'm not sure if he was serious though, he would sometimes say disturbing things for a reaction. That one made me laugh though.)

The same guy had one of the receptionists at our work paint his nails for him... I'm not sure he had it done for that reason but.. well.. he got a thrill out of it the next morning apparently...

As for King, I think he does sometimes go too far, but he isn't as bad as many writers. I think that scene in the Stand between the Kid and Trashy should have been left out. I'll admit I found the gun barrel part rather funny but I could have done without the detailed description...
