Ok, I'm gonna test this site by posting grainy photos that are somewhat on-topic....

Here's Gunslinger Born issue #1 with a couple promotional materials, the Daily Bugle and the Marvel Spotlight.

Here are the two variant covers for issue #1.

The Jae Lee sketch variant (1:75 ratio - meaning one was printed for every 75 of the regular cover) and the Joe Quesada variant (1:25)

Here is issue #2 - in all three covers. From left to right:
Jae Lee variant (1:50), Finch variant (1:25) and the standard cover.

I have to say that this issue was 50 50 for me. Why put Marten on the cover? Really?

btw, i love the cover, it is my avatar but I wants me some more Marten!

In this first amazing issue of The Gunslinger Born we get graphic in Rolands coming of age. I personally loved the art work of JAE and Richard. The ability to put art to words so descriptively is fasinating to me.

my favorite part was seeing Rolands fight with Cort. To actually see the same story told through someone elses eyes was so cool.

another thing i really like about the comics so far is the back stories at the end. Specifically, I really enjoyed The Sacred Geography of Mid-World.

The specific telling of the beams laid out and unbroken. Roland often has a difficult time remembering and retelling the stories in The Wastelands. Here they are, Vannay's words, straight.

sarah
05-10-2007, 09:05 PM
The "conversation" between Roland and Steven was eye opening and funny. I find it funny only that I feel I know Roland as an adult not as a child and to read and see his interaction with is father made me laugh a bit.

The most interesting part of this issue for me was Marten Broadcloak and The Crimson King.

To actually read a see a real conversation with the two of them at the start of Roland becoming a gunslinger was so cool. I mean it was all forseen and knowing what really did come of it all is amazing.

Matt
05-11-2007, 07:15 AM
I totally agree and its one of the reasons that I fell so much in love with them from the very beginning. I have seen too many adaptations to be bogged down on what they did or didn't miss.

But man...a conversation we had never seen before, now that is exciting.

Patrick
05-11-2007, 08:39 AM
 at the spoiler comment.

I think they are putting main characters on each of the covers and it was simply Marten's turn.

I haven't read this issue yet.

Patrick
05-11-2007, 08:42 AM
I have to say that I really enjoy most of this "in-fill" stuff going on. Those conversations being great examples.

Me neither. I am hoping my local comic concern has it when I drive to see Spider-Man tomorrow.

Jae Lee sketch variant (50:1) on the left and Leinil Yu color variant on the right (25:1)

Here is the 2nd Printing cover of Issue #1. The artist is Joe Quesada.

They call it a variant, but it's mass-produced and sells for the standard $3.99 cover price.

I like this one a lot.

Look what just came out today! I went into the store to finally pick up the second printing for the first issue (posted in that thread), and the guy said this had just been released today. Somehow I had missed the announcement.

Here is the 2nd Printing cover of Issue #2. The artist is Stuart Immonen.

They call it a variant, but it's mass-produced and sells for the standard $3.99 cover price.

I love this one. In fact, I'm starting to like this series of 2nd printing covers better than the 1st printing standard covers.

Yeah, the guys there are really helpful and you can set up a subscription so you can advance order. Saves a buck or two on the cover price but you still have to pay shipping. They do an excellent job of wrapping them so they won't get damaged though - these guys are serious about their comics. :D

Daghain
05-22-2007, 09:54 PM
Well, true, but I would have bought them anyway. :)

He was REALLY nice about it, offering instead of insisting. I was impressd he noticed. As a matter of fact, it appears to me, the not-into-comic-books-in-general person, that these guys REALLY love their comics. If you saw how carefully my lone DT comic was packed and shipped, you'd be pretty freaking impressed. It takes me like five or ten minutes to get into the thing, and it's PRISTINE when I open it.

So yeah, I'm a bit biased. I found them on accident, and I really, REALLY like them. They seem to be comic-heads. Totally. I do a LOT of random purchasing on the Internet, and if I say they're good, it usually means they're BETTER THAN GOOD. I don't give kudos lightly. Just ask me about an online vendor that's pissed me off (and remember I have a LOOONG fuse LOL).

I've thought about getting the variants but really, I'm not a collector, just having the regular artwork/story is what is important to me. I have enjoyed many of the variant artwork though (see av).

I do get a little impatient waiting for my guy to ship me the comic...maybe I'll ask Laura/Rjeso which comic store she goes to again.

I'm just a novice collector myself, but I do enjoy the variants. I'm not collecting them hoping they'll someday be worth something, I just enjoy it, and don't have any intention of selling them.

As far as Laura, you need to motivate her to keep up with the current issues as she's been falling behind. ;)

As far as issue #4 is concerned, I agree with the general sentiment that this is probably the least exciting so far, but I figure occasionally there are going to be passages that move the story along without a lot of action. So I'm ok with it.

Old Man Splitfoot
05-24-2007, 05:16 PM
Yeah, it is indeed a variant cover. Thing is, Marvel doesn't like to reprint their books without adding something or changing it around, so just about all reprints get variant covers. So while it is a variant cover, you won't see any price increase like you see on some of the other variants.

I'm trying to wait until the entire 7 issues are out. Hoping that in the future, new info will be given regarding Roland's past. Would love to find out more about Jericho Hill.

I usuallly skip any text included in comics but i will definitly read Robin Furth's stuff. I want as much info as possible regarding these fantastic characters and the places they inhabit.

The artwork by Jae Lee is top notch. I remember seeing his work years ago in Marvel's Sub-Mariner comic and Image's Hellshock. Jae was always a fave artist of mine but it is quite obvious how his skills have improved over the years. Gorgeous stuff!!!

I don't own a lot of comics. My comic collection is because the writers write novels too. Neil Gaiman, The Gunslinger Born, George R.R. Martin’s The Hedge Knight, etcetera… So I wouldn’t know better when it comes to artists in the comic industry.

But I was really impressed with the artwork in The Gunslinger Born comics; colorful and realistic. There was just something about them that made them jump out at me. Then I received my copy of Neil Gaiman’s Marvel 1602, and it was just as good. The artwork was great. The thing I noticed was Richard Isanove was the graphic colorer for Marvel 1602, as well as The Gunslinger Born, but Andy Kubert is the illustrator for Marvel 1602, while Jae Lee is for The Dark Tower. In my opinion, having him color the artwork is really what is making the artwork so beautiful.

Well let me just be the one to chime in and change that Patrick. For the most part I have not been impressed with variant covers. So far my favorite cover of them all has been the standard issue 2 cover. None of them come even close to it so far.

On another subject, for those who have read issue 5 now as I have what do you think of the end story? I thought it was fantastic as usual, especially the part involving the spider-demon coming to Rhea and giving her, her duty, I would have never imagined that she was THAT old

According to Lilja's the book is coming out on 11/7.

Very disapointed that the cover is the same as Issue 1. I was hoping they would have designed a new cover for it.

Either way, looking forward to it and I hope they add some cool extras.

another fantastic show by the stephen king and crew. The artwork continues to blow me away. And thank you thank you to Robin Furth and her laughing miror. perfection. This is something I've been looking forward to, something new and fresh. It fills in the holes and lets you see the story around Roland and his Ka-Tet.

bravo.

I enjoyed the latest issue, especially the backstory provided for Jonas and Rhea. Yes, CSH, that was very surprising to find out exactly how old Rhea truly was. I'm a fiend for all additional backstory btw. My minor grievance with the issue is that it made the fact that Jonas was a failed gunslinger seem like common knowledge. From W&G, it was clear that Jonas kept this as a closely guarded secret, as it was said that Depape and Reynolds didn't know this for sure, but had suspected it.

Reminder: Now that the issue is out, this thread allows unmarked spoilers as stated in the first post above.

I liked the Rhea backstory. I liked that the glass added new depth and layers to her pre-existing essential evilness.

I liked the backstory about Jonas only at first. His "adoption", being raised with Cort as a brother, that stuff made for a good story. Two things bugged me though: (1) That it was presented as "Jonas was totally awesome, then this glass made him go eeeeevil" - that removes self-responsibility and just makes Jonas another victim. (2) He failed his test because he got pissed and went out for it too early despite pleas not to. That might have been an attempt to draw parallels between Jonas and Roland, but to me it came off as unoriginal as that is basically Roland's story.

I much prefer the interpretation that Jonas failed his gunslinger test because he simply wasn't quite good enough and his nature was to turn bitter and vindicative because of it.

Matt
06-13-2007, 01:36 PM
I am the same, even though I have not read it, that doesn't sit well with me.

The simple explanation is the easiest. Jonas flat wasn't good enough to be a gunslinger and the test proved that.

I agree. Why else would he be so irritated by Roland once he realized Roland knew what he was?

It would be much more embarassing to fail because you sucked, that to fail because you tried too soon. I think the failed gunslinger aspect says a lot about who Jonas was as a person.

VolsToTheWall
06-13-2007, 04:52 PM
Yeah, in the book, Jonas was portrayed as a sneaky, back-shooting, SOB, failing his test of manhood simply because he wasn't good enough is more appropriate. I guess his backstory is more in line with how the comic handled the issue of his failed gunslinger status, since in the comic it is a known fact, and in the actual book, it was only suspected by his closest compadres.

Usually, that's the case with Marvel TPBs and hardcovers, the cover of the collected edition will ba the same as the cover of the 1st issue in the series, or, in the case of an ongoing collection of a series like Ultiomate Spider-Man, it will be the cover of the 1st issue in that story arc. Not always the case, but it seems to be most of the time.

Not quite what I was expecting. The cover for #7 that I would really like would be a spoiler though. A cover of the thinny dining on Latigo's crew, or maybe some sort of variation on a thinny cover that doesn't spoil it. I would have preferred a group shot of the three boys together of some sort.

I got a chance to read this issue just yesterday, I was quite impressed. As a person that has read comics and books his whole life, I really appreciate the way they tie the mediums.

For someone who knows, the moment is unforgettable all over again. For someone who hasn't read the books, its just a cool line. Obviously the dialog in these comics had to be totally different than the one in the books. Just not enough space.

For the writer to be able to key into the the feel of the actual series by choosing an exact line to use from the text, that is very cool imo.

In this case...Cuthbert again (just like in the showdown at the Rest)

"The truth is, you've lost your compass. You've called your carelessness love, and made a virtue of irresponsibility."

beautiful.

Because you know what? I agreed with Bert in WaG. Shit was way too important to waste on even true love. And I'm a love guy.

Also, as far the end-story goes...does anyone else think that the "birth of something truly vile" or however it was put, was the birth of the Crimson King? I have a theory that the land where the can-char were worshipped was where the Crimson King was born and had his castle built Le Casse Roi Russe. It will be interesting to see if I'm right.

In regards to the color variant cover of issue #7, I agree that the Rodeo Winner belt buckle is inappropriate. Aside from that glaring error, I actually like the drawing.

My attitude about all of the "limited" color variants by various artists (as opposed to the standard covers and the sketch variants by Jae Lee) is that they represent the Gunslinger at later points in his life and do not necessarily relate to the specific chapter of the story within that issue. I expect them to show alternative takes on the gunslinger universe.

Coming from that perspective, seeing an artist admit that occasionally the sky was blue instead of black/grey/red/brown in his world(s) is actually kind of refreshing.

I can totally agree with that point, but I still hate those freaking clouds, man. :)

I can totally see your point about the clouds. :)

Mordred Deschain

I would say, It would be cool if the clouds at least looked like they were flowing into a line of clouds about the gunslinger to represent the Beam.

That would have been a very nice touch. The whole "herring bone" pattern.

I finally got a chance to read this issue and liked it very much.

The only thing that kind of got me was the fact that it didn't cover the "taking of the boys". That scene in the book where they get the drop on Roland and his crew.

It was always significant to me because of how Roland thought he would never get taken that way again. I know they have limited space but I could have used that for some reason.

The issue with the Guidebook is that it was bound wrong. The printer placed the back cover as the front and vice versa. They had to redo the entire production. My comic store told me there is no planned date of release but possibly as early as next week.

I got both variant covers at my store.

I have been ordering my copies thru eBay. There is a comic store about a block away from where I live but the two times I checked, they didn't even have TDT. Unbelievable! I tried to call them this morning to see if they were carrying #7 but apparently it is too much to expect for them to actually pick up the telephone and answer. :(
Can't wait til I get #7!

I got the 1:25 variant at the cover price ($3.99), but he said they hadn't gotten their 1:50 variants in yet. I'll go back in the next week or so and it should be in by then. He charges me about $10 for the sketch 1:50 variant. Hopefully, the Guidebook will be in then too.

I was able to pick up an extra copy of the #6 1:25 variant. Cost, if anyone is interested, is $10.

My store did not receive the Guide as it was misbound-per Wiz.
My guy charges $60 cash-no tax for the 2 variants. I haven't gone there yet (38 miles away), but he says it will be a bit (weeks) before the guide comes out.

This series is totally HOT in New York City. I have to get there early for any chance to get the variants. And each time I have gone, they are completely sold out of prior issues (and note that this is a big comic store!).

My variants have cost me $40 and $20 each time. But, then again, it IS NYC.

Matt
08-03-2007, 09:29 AM
I am glad to hear the series itself is so hot. That bodes very well for the future imo. :nana:

I visited three shops in Denver and they maybe had the current issue and one back plus misc stuff they were trying to get out the door. Didn't seem like there was a vast supply of anything back though

Waiting for mine in the mail. :(

I was kind of glad Susan got out of the way. I'm not a happy endings kind of person. Life rarely works out like that. As Roland said, "You needn't die happy but you must die satisfied, for you have lived your life from beginning to end and ka is always served."

I feel the same about Rolands quote. There is an argument that says Susan was happier to have those moments and be burned than she ever would have been living as Thorin's gilly.

I just bought the first arc off ebay - is there an option to be on a direct mailing list? I don't live near a comic store and I'm not sure if I've got a good deal - I paid £29 plus postage for all seven 1st printings.

Also, why show Sheemie in the weeds if you aren't going to develop it?

Overall loved it though, if a person wasn't a huge fan of the book, I bet it was gripping

Patrick

Yeah, I guess expected the fire itself to be a little more "present" (graphic?) - rather than just the suggestion of flames based on the coloring (Isanove did a great job with what he was given, I expected more from Lee on this one).

I was left with the impression that maybe there was a business decision not to scare the little kids or something - which is a bummer since they're not the target market on this one.

That whole scene just didn't feel as "dire" as I expected.

Yes, there are at least a couple reputable online dealers that will provide that service for reasonable prices (not cheap, but reasonable). Someone around here who knows what specific companies do this will likely post some links.
