I expect there will be a large publicity campaign for "Under the Dome". After all, SK is also having a signing tour for it.

You can bet your bottom dollar there will be some sort of Chester's Mill "snow globe" type of promo.

I'm no good at graphics, but I'd love to see one with a squashed woodchuck at the edge. :)

What do you think it should be like?

NOTE: This Woodchuck is NOT really dead. Just on its back.

Wiz, supposedly King is doing a promo tour. In the past most promo tours have included a reading-and often either a signing, or pre-signed books.

I think that if there were promo items, we would have seen them already.

And besides, why would they need promo items when King is doing a huge book tour?

On top of that, you have a signed limited edition, and a collectors edition.

Randall Flagg

We still may see some POS promo stuff.

Mr. Rabbit Trick

Waterstones don't announce them in advance. You get them in store on a first-come basis.

The only Under the Dome promo item that I know of is that scarce promotional booklet issued by Hodder & Stoughton. This thing is really pretty scarce, too--I've only know of about three or four. I got mine the end of September.

I don't understand the scarcity of this promo booklet (or any promo booklet for that matter). The purpose of the item is to promote the book. I don't understand why they would not be widely disseminated to accomplish the purpose of promoting. How can a scarce item "promote" sales of a book? Weird. These should be everywhere and easy to get.

I am so disappointed that I didnt get one for the french Dark Tower omnibus : i know of only 1 booklet. How promoting is that?

Brice

Promoting for elitists? On the one hand they wish to promote the book, but on the other they are very selective about the sort of people they wish to know about it.

For the 'Under the Dome' completist, here's an eBay auction that's a bit off-beat:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110476243185

It's a sculpture by Lisa Snellings, a well-known artist in the US. She was the Guest Artist at the most recent World Fantasy Convention for example, and has collaborated with Neil Gaiman, Peter Beagle, and Gene Wolfe.

I posted about the US version of this auction in the Collecting UtD thread without noticing this discussion.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110476243185

I've gotten items from Lisa Snellings in the past - she's a very well-known US artist known for her sculptural work. She's collaborated with Neil Gaiman, Peter Beagle, Gene Wolfe and others. This is a one-of-a-kind piece of artwork in a series of similar pieces - her signature Poppets reading various books (Poe, Gaiman, Lovecraft, Seuss among others). All of her work is hand-done, so I expect the book cover was painted by her. IANAL, but I'd guess that it probably falls outside the trademark issues given its unique nature as part of a work of art.

Can you buy a second one with the gray-lettered dustjacket?

:P
:wtf:Probably with a few extra $$$$$. I think the artist is doing 10,000 of the white lettered and only 9,999 of the gray.

Joking aside, this item is legit - although I consider to be fan art rather than a promo item.

Anyway, on the artist's website (http://slaughterhousestudios.blogspot.com/) there are a couple more clickable photos.

She has also done a similar poppet piece (http://cgi.ebay.com/LSnellings-Poppet-in-Glass-Graveyard-Book-Neil-Gaiman_W0QQitemZ380193441146QQcmdZViewItemQQptZArt _Sculpture?hash=item58854b857a) for Gaiman's GRAVEYARD BOOK.

The piece is great, just more than I would spend.

Patrick
01-04-2010, 10:17 PM
Yeah, that's my problem anymore. Anytime I consider anything at all related to collecting - this dome sculpture, a bookcase, whatever - I can't help equating it to how many signed books I could buy with that money.
