Hello People.

The idea is to post here some curious foreign editions. In my case (I'm from Buenos Aires, Argentina) I'll post some local editions that worth to be here.

First:

1st Spanish Ed. of Insomnia.
The DJ glows in the dark:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/525/medium/000_0120.jpg

The very first spanish edition of The Stand, splitted in two volumes. Since the publisher went out of bussiness in 1982, this edition is very hard to find nowadays.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/525/medium/100_1303.jpg

The dutch edition of Dolan's Cadillac. I really like the cover

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/525/dolan1.jpg

And almost all the printed editions of Riding the bullet.
From left to right, from top to bottom:

Japanesse 2nd HC edition, Japanesse 1st Limited HC edition, german SC edition, spanish SC edition.
Dutch HC edition, Italian SC edition (comes in a Dvd box with a CD), French SC first edition, Spanish HC edition, Italian Dvd box for the book and the cd.

I think it is. It was advertised on E-bay as volume 2.

For a site that lists a couple thousand various King titles, both US and foreign:

Stephen King Book Covers (http://www.stephenkingshop.com/bookcovers.htm)

Unfortunately, these are just thumbnails, and cannot be enlarged. (Just think of how much bandwidth THAT would take!)

Yes, it was. The bad thing about them being listed seperately is I won volumes 2 & 3 and someone else bought one out from under me. <_< I can be pretty sure it will be a long time before I find volume one if I ever do.

It should be about five dollars a book shipped anywhere in the states. If you decide to order any of the multi volume sets though bear in mind that shipping is per volume.

the pocket editions that are really nice, were done by the end of 80's/ beginning of 90's if i remember well.. all by the same artist: impressive, right?
the stand is absolutely AWSOME! Imagine it as a painting!
If only the upcoming comic could be as great!

I mentionned in the past, that there the Dark Tower saga is planned for mid of october in France, as in 2 books. This will be a limited & numbered edition (no signatures). And it will includes the best (french) bibliography i have ever seen, and apparently a brand new biography (i didnt know that).

The 2 books will be : 19x23 cms, hardcover, under a french-style cover (well i think) and about 1300 pages each.

Here are the covers:

Hi Ari, very nice. But did you know there are actually three different Dutch editions of Riding the Bullet? There's the blue one you have, there's a large-print version with a different cover:

http://www.stephenking.nl/images/boeken/skachtbaan3.jpg

And there is a limited edition (1000 copies) which is bound in green cloth:

If you are interested in either one of them, just let me know. The large-print version is still for sale I believe, the limited version is harder to find but can usually be bought for around €35-50.

Some more Dutch covers, but first a note about Dutch editions in general: traditionally, until very recently, almost every SK book has been published as a large paperback. There are only a few exceptions, and these hardcovers have become quite collectible (for Dutch standards, at least. Not comparable to collectible USA or UK books by King of course). This trend has changed only recently, with the publication of a hardcover series of the Dark Tower and related books (all reissues, of course).

So a problem one runs into when collecting Dutch King books, is that the quality of the books themselves leaves a lot to be desired, especially with the older volumes. Most of the books that are acquired on the second-hand market have been read at least once, and it shows.

Another aspect of collecting Dutch King books is that almost every title has been published many times, by different publishers, with different ISBN's, and also with different cover variants within each ISBN. On the one hand, this makes it interesting for those who care :D on the other hand, it is often very unclear which version actually constitutes the first edition of a book, which makes it quite frustrating!

A last remark: I think that the artwork on the earlier Dutch King books had a very nice quality to it (maybe it's just nostalgia, since those were the books I first saw and read ;)) but in the early nineties, things went horribly wrong in terms of artwork. So I won't be showing any of these.

'nuff said! Here are some of the covers that I really like!

Bezeten Stad ('Salem's Lot)

This was actually the first King book I ever saw. My father had a copy and I didn't even dare touch it, it was so scary! :D 'Bezeten stad' literally translates to 'Possessed town'.

http://www.cabecapoeira.nl/king/images/stories/NL/IMG_2178.JPG

De Beproeving (The Stand)

http://www.cabecapoeira.nl/king/images/stories/NL/IMG_2191.JPG

Het Tweede Gezicht (The Shining)

The title of this first edition was 'Het Tweede Gezicht', literally translating to 'The second sight'. In later editions, the title was changed to 'De Shining'.

http://www.cabecapoeira.nl/king/images/stories/NL/IMG_2177.JPG

Ogen van Vuur (Firestarter)

'Ogen van Vuur' translates to 'Eyes of Fire'.

http://www.cabecapoeira.nl/king/images/stories/NL/IMG_2196.JPG

De Leerling (Apt Pupil)

For some reason, there was an explosion of books like this one in the eighties. The collection 'Skeleton Crew' was not published as a single volume at that time, and instead, there was a flood of books containing one or more short stories from the different collections. So there are books containing some of the stories from 'Night Shift', books containing some of the stories from 'Skeleton Crew', 'Different Seasons' etcetera. To enhance the confusion, variations exist of the same book with a different number of stories included :D! Anyway, this book is one of these 'truncated' collections.

http://www.cabecapoeira.nl/king/images/stories/NL/IMG_2218.JPG

And some others:

Ik weet wat je wilt (I know what you need)

http://www.cabecapoeira.nl/king/images/stories/NL/IMG_2219.JPG

Dichte Mist (The Mist)

Literally translates to 'Dense Mist'.

http://www.cabecapoeira.nl/king/images/stories/NL/IMG_2220.JPG

Duistere Krachten

Literally translates to 'Dark Forces'.

Those Bulgarian covers are pretty scary...
The Firestarter (Charlie) cover you seem to like bothers me a bit since I don't see the link between the cover and the story. I mean apart from the implied heat.
I also think "Marche ou crève" is a better title than "The Long Walk". It's a lot closer to the story and that's partly because of the title that I bought the book in the first place. It took them 10 years to translate that one so hopefully they got a good title for it!

A good friend of mine (which is always updating the french bibliography) is currently working on the list of all the mass paperback editions from a publisher.

And i was "amazed" to see what the publisher is doing.
Well, first of all the type on the covers is not always the same (but over the time they all get the same), but something that is shocking me is all the different colors of the type.
It's not harmonised at all, and look stupid !

Look at some of em:

I don't claim to be an authority on foreign editions but, according to my notes, the Japanese edition is the first hardcover appearance of the story. There was an initial printing of 2000 copies with the title in red letters. It quickly sold out and another printing was done with the the title in blue letters.

They have been issuing new editions of SK's books all with cover art by Vincent Chong (contributor to the limited edition of FDNS - A Good Marriage). I really like Vincent's art style and a couple of the small presses I custom use him frequently for other work as well. I intend to start collecting them soon, but have not done so yet, so all of these photos are from Mr. Chong's blog.

Black House

The Talisman (this one is one of my favorites - I think it captures the essence of the story perfectly with everyone having twinners besides Jack)

Under the Dome

There are also a ton more at this Polish fan site including the rough initial sketches and finished pieces.

Chrome is quite good.
It's quick and light. I use it as a 2nd browser, but the fact that we cannot add search-engine at the top right corner like Firefox is annoying. And from a webmarketer point of view there are things that are annoying (ie : not seeing the page title at the top). The translator that RF mention can be very useful for someone that doesnt understand a second language.
Chrome is a lot better than internet explorer...

...Chrome is a lot better than internet explorer...

I'm sure THAT's the truth! I've been using FF for a few years now and actually just found an add on called FoxLingo that is working really great for auto-translating a variety of webpages. All you have to do is right click on any page and select a language (which it can also auto-detect if you are not sure where you are).

In februari the Dutch will be getting a translation of Blockade Billy and Morality.
To be unique it's gonna be "Morality with the bonusstory Blockade Billy". So, just the other way around as the Scribner edition.

Morality is translated as "Eenmalige zonde".... ("One-off sin").

Interesting, I like the switch. Might as well, since Morality was almost half the book in the first place. And I also like the translation of the title.:orely:

I've noticed that a few months ago, when a french fan was asking tips of where to find this book... and there are only a few copies available online, for this kind of price. Which is twice the original price.
If i remember correctly, it was a limited print run of 2,500 or 5,000 copies each.

There is the same shortage of copies with the french COLORADO KID. It's out of print, and i dont know how many copies were done but... probably not that much. Guess i could ask the publisher.

In the case of the Spanish cover, the artwork is purchased to the publisher as well.

I do not understand that comment. It is likely that the publishers buys the rights to use the artwork as well. I seriously doubt that major publishers will NOT buy rights for artwork. It's just that OFTEN they use already artwork, as i guess that buying rights is cheaper than trying to get good artwork. Easier, cheaper, matching the author's vision of the book. What's wrong about that?

By the way...check the Spanish cover for Joyland. I LOVE IT.

And it'll be published in a small format (like a pocket book), in hardcover with dustjacket.

Yeah, a lot of times I think rights to art for a book are sold in one country and might even be sold for a totally differing book in another. I think it's just that there are sometimes cases where worldwide rights are sold and sometimes country specific rights.

You're right about artwork being also sold for different books.
Last week or so i've seen the following cover on a book from a different author (dont remember who) :

http://club-stephenking.fr/img/APROPOS/anglais_2001-/Artists_Inspired_by_Stephen%20King-Centipede-Press/Cover-Illustrations/Artists%20inspired%20by%20Stephen%20King%20-%20cover.jpg?dur=464

And i know that the Firestarter cover of the limited edition was used on another book too. Both in France.
