Yay! What's your favorite CD by her? Mine is Boys for Pele.

Also this thread is to partially ramble on about how awesome some of these artists are.

Thanks for listing off your favorites, a lot of these ladies I've never heard of so I'll be looking into it!

Now that makes me happy to hear (and it will make Amanda smile when she reads this too). Etta is my favorite singer of all time other than Otis Redding (and they've done several of the same songs!). She can make anything sound good. I recently learned how to play "I'd Rather Go Blind" and couldn't stop smiling about it.

Here's some info Jillian, taken from her website:

TORI AMOS TO RELEASE "ABNORMALLY ATTRACTED TO SIN" ON MAY 19. PLUS TRACKLISTING ANNOUNCED.

http://www.pantip.com/cafe/chalermkrung/topic/C7617523/C7617523-0.png

Tori Amos will release her Universal Republic debut album, ABNORMALLY ATTRACTED TO SIN, on May 19, 2009. AOL Music's Spinner.com will premiere today, Tuesday, March 10 the album's cover art and tracklisting, as well as an interview where Tori discusses the record.

Tori will offer a sneak-peek at some of the songs from ABNORMALLY ATTRACTED TO SIN at this year's South By Southwest Music Conference in Austin, TX when she will headline the Universal Republic Records Showcase. The showcase, one of the most anticipated events in the conference's two decade-plus history, is on Thursday, March 19, and will be held at the historic club La Zona Rosa.

A DVD of corresponding 'visualettes' for each track will accompany the deluxe version of ABNORMALLY ATTRACTED TO SIN. These interlocking episodic films bring to life the narrative arc of the album. The footage was captured over the past year and shot with a noir twist in HD and Super 8.

The album was produced by Tori and features longtime contributors Matt Chamberlain on drums, Jon Evans on bass, and Mac Aladdin on guitars. Once again Tori is joined in the studio by Mark Hawley and Marcel Van Limbeek who recorded and mixed the album at Martian Engineering in Cornwall, England. ABNORMALLY ATTRACTED TO SIN is the singer's tenth studio album, and is sure to be regarded by fans and critics as another innovative chapter in the artist's trailblazing career.

For nearly two decades, Tori Amos' stark lyrical flourishes and inspired musicianship have shaped the musical landscape. She is also considered one of the most emotionally powerful live artists in music today. Her most recent world tour, launched in the summer of 2007, with media platforms such as the BBC who lauded both her live show and album as 'returning Tori Amos back to the forefront of a genre she defined...still pushing her own boundaries.'

The tracklisting for ABNORMALLY ATTRACTED TO SIN is as follows:
Give
Welcome to England
Strong Black Vine
Flavor
Not Dying Today
Maybe California
Curtain Call
Fire to Your Plain
Police Me
That Guy
Abnormally Attracted to Sin
500 Miles
Mary Jane
Starling
Fast Horse
Ophelia
Lady in Blue

I'm especially interested in seeing those videos for each song. Should be interesting.

So many great female vocalists and I think you guys have hit a lot of them, I'll throw these out as some of my favourite female vocalists (if you knew me, I think a few of these would surprise you given the taste of music I broadcast through band t-shirts and band tattoos!)

First, I think Kate Bush is amazing and just love her voice, it's my biggest guilty pleasure but I think she's awesome.

Karen Carpenter was awesome.

Joan Baez is a legend, LOVE her voice, smoking psychedelic chick, a voice you couldn't help falling in love with, awesome song-writer and handy with a guitar

Grace Slick is the ULTIMATE rock chick, the hottest gal ever! YouTube - Somebody To Love/White Rabbit Jefferson Airplane

And she wrote Surrealistic Pillow, one of the greatest albums ever made IMO, I would go back to 1970 right now just to not feel weird fantasizing about the smoking babe that went from http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/7/72/Grace.slick.jpeg/220px-Grace.slick.jpeg to http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/7b/GraceSlick2008.jpg/180px-GraceSlick2008.jpg.

Now, not saying she hasn't aged well, but damn!

Memphis Minnie, I adore old crackly blues and the velvet blues voices of some of the ladies from that era, she's GREAT, plus she wrote 'When The Levee Breaks'...that song is so damn good.

2 of my favourite musicians are female, both predominantly instrumentalists:

Kaki King - Wonderful creative technique with that guitar
YouTube - Kaki King - Playing With Pink Noise (Live)

Hiromi Uehara - Unbelievably talented experimental jazz pianist
YouTube - TIME DIFFERENCE - HIROMI'S SONICBLOOM LIVE

I would marry either of them in a heartbeat! And I would cut my legs off for the chance of jamming with Hiromi :panic:

Also, Jennifer Batten is an amazing guitarist, famous for playing on Michael Jackson's 'Dirty Diana', one of the true shred pioneers and massively underrated.
YouTube - Jennifer Batten - Mental Graffiti

There's probably tonnes I'm missing, but that's what I have to add to the already awesome list :D

I can only say good things about Angela Aki. I first discovered her because she sings the end song to Final Fantasy XII, and Kiss Me Goodbye is just brilliant.

Her version of Eyes on Me from Final Fantasy VIII is also brilliant

I've heard a few more songs by her on youtube, but the ones I really remember are Santa Fe (great) and Blue Shadow (a Japanese language song sung to the music of Whiter Shade of Pale by Procul Harem, which imo is FANTASTIC)

So if you get a chance, please give her a wee bit of a listen.

Also the female singer of Limbic System(link) (http://limbicsystemband.com/) is absolutely fantastic. Again, just my opinion, but she's also an amazing harpist

Obviously only my opinion, but Nico is the one thing keeping me from loving the first VU album. I love most of those songs, but prefer the live versions with Lou singing. Everyone's tastes vary but Nico's voice has never been my thing. I do love Cass Elliott though so thanks for including her in your list.

And one of her with her husband and his band (which she's also part of in addition to her own band).

From that original list, I like Sinead, Loreena McKennitt, Tegan and Sara, and-to a lesser extent, Tori Amos. Don't know if anyone has mentioned these yet but this is my own list:

-Dar Williams
-Suzanne Vega
-Beth Orton
-Kasey Chambers
-Iris DeMent
-Lucinda Williams

Edit: Looks like I already mentioned #6.

I love Nico. Granted she doesn't have a typical voice or even what can be considered a pleasant one but it's soulful and honest, which I appreciate (much like Lou Reed, which is why I love their collaborations) as much, if not more so, than a great voice.

I definitely love Lou, though I agree, his voice is an acquired taste.

Personally, I don't have a problem with Reed's voice-I'm a huge folkie, so I love lots of artists with sub-optimal singing voices. I just don't think he cuts it as a "rock and roll" musician, even an experimental one. On the other hand, I like Laurie Anderson's compositions. Also, I do appreciate his songwriting on some level-I think the cover Kirsty MacColl and Evan Dando did of Perfect Day is amazing, for example.

I'd contend most of the Velvet's catalog along with several of his solo albums ("Coney Island Baby" in particular) illustrate the exact opposite.

This Gal's voice reminds me of Janice...The Janice.

Just ignore the 80's garb and listen to her voice.

Kristin Hersh (solo and Throwing Muses)

Sort of a harsh singer, I think the best intro to her voice is "counting backwards".
