It is a grading scale that assesses the physical condition of the comic. The higher the number the better.

Sam

It is on a decimal point scale from 0-10.0 if I remember right.

Oh sure, let me sell my Picasso first to get up the money. :P

Sam - that comic is probably a better investment than the Picasso!

LadyOfShadows - There are no ignorant questions. Please ask away.

All - I won't be surprised if this comic sells over $300,000 or $350,000. I'm going to watch for the fun of it, and I'll post when it ends.

It really is the Holy Grail for a lot of comic collectors, so I expect big big bucks, even at a CGC 6 ( middle of the condition scale ).

Here's the CGC grading scale in total :

10.0 - Gem Mint
9.9 - Mint
9.8 - Near Mint/Mint
9.6 - Near Mint +
9.4 - Near Mint
9.2 - Near Mint -
9.0 - Very Fine/Near Mint
8.5 - Very Fine +
8.0 - Very Fine
7.5 - Very Fine -
7.0 - Fine/Very Fine
6.5 - Fine +
6.0 - Fine
5.5 - Fine -
5.0 - Very Good/Fine
4.5 - Very Good +
4.0 - Very Good
3.5 - Very Good -
3.0 - Good/Very Good
2.5 - Good +
2.0 - Good
1.8 - Good -
1.5 - Fair/Good
1.0 - Fair
.5 - Poor

To put a little perspective around this... that Action Comics # 1 is a CGC 6. The Dark Tower Comics I collect, I'm going for a complete set at CGC 9.8 !

Current comics, it's not difficult at all to get a 9.8.

I'm going to be starting a CGC Collectors thread soon. Are there any other Comic Collectors here who collect CGC graded comics, DT and otherwise?

And I was thinking this was one of the DTBay auctions.

Good luck in your search Pam. Most books are around a 9.6-9.8 when they arrive at the store. I don't know if you could ever really define a comic as 10.0 in the store, unless you get really lucky, find it right out of the box, and are the only person to handle it. Even then, it's not likely to get graded as a 10.

Sam - Want to know something, Joe Hill's Locke and Key - I see more of these comics graded 10/Mint than any other comic. Must be IDW's high end paper/covers or something.

I have a DT 9.9 and most every other issue at 9.8, including variants and sketches. Plus, a couple of The Stand. I'm a geek. :D

So what would one of my !0.0 CGC graded Action Comics #1 be worth?

turtlex

There are fewer than 100 copies of Action Comics # 1 known to exist - in the whole world... if you have more than one copy, in any condition - you're set for life.

In a CGC 10? Without a doubt - easy over a million.

I did not know that Pam. Wow. It HAS to be something with the cover they're using because the books that I often see would grade out at 9.8 or even 9.9 but not 10. I'm not surprised with the Dark Tower books though since Marvel is using a better quality cover than most of their other books.

Hey Sam - I think with the DT books, the issue might be that they're very popular, so unless the person who is actually opening up the delivery order goes very slow and pulls the best right off... then by the time they hit the shelf... well, that's just it, one slight ding and there goes a 9.9 right down the drain.

I don't collect the Locke&Key books, but I wish I did - just because the quality is so high. I just can't afford to focus on another graded series. It gets too expensive.

Right now : for the L&K CGC Collectors :
Locke & Key at 9.9 - http://cgi.ebay.com/LOCKE-KEY-4-CGC-9-9-1ST-PRINT_W0QQitemZ370141062980QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_D efaultDomain_0?hash=item370141062980&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1205%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C 240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50

Locke & Key at 10 - http://cgi.ebay.com/1-CGC-10-0-Joe-Hills-Locke-Key-5-1st-Print_W0QQitemZ220321912273QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_D efaultDomain_0?hash=item220321912273&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1205%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C 240%3A1318%7C301%3A0%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50

I will say though that I'm considering submitting some comics to CGC myself - see if I can get a hang of what is a 9.8 and a 9.6, etc. That will save me some money - considerably!

With my store, the books I get never hit the shelf. They do place them into a comic book storage box though, and the books can easily get dinged in there. My guy is very careful with the books though. He's not someone who opened a store to make money like some did during the early 90's or converted a card store into a comics and cards store like many others. He, his wife, and a partner (now bought out) opened the store because they loved comics (maybe the wife not so much, but she's a gamer) and wanted to have a good quality store while specializing in something that many dealers at the time didn't carry, Graphic Novels and Trade Paper Backs. The store continues to work hard to carry every trade and GN currently in print. With so many books being put into TPB format, this is an increasingly difficult, and expensive, task. However, if it's in print, they can get it if they don't have it. They do have most of the trades that are available though.

It is. I started going there when the store I used to go to closed. There were two other stores to choose from, but I haven't regretted my choice. By far I think A. Pennyworth's is the best store I've dealt with in the last ten years.

One of my local shops just reopened with a new focus on trades and graphic novels. Very cool for me! :D

I don't know... my prediction is still over $300,000.... I expect last minute bidders....

.... I'm afraid this is the closest I will ever get to an Action Comics # 1.

And to be honest, I'm a Marvel-Fan-Girl, I would rather an X-Men #1, Spidey #1 and Daredevil #1.

Brice
03-13-2009, 08:30 AM
...and you could likely have all three combined for much cheaper.

Well, 2.5 hours to go and the price is now : $280,200

Wow, yup. That's a pretty good amount for an old comic graded 6.0.

Impressive.
