So as you may have heard already, Green Day has announced their next album release for May 2009 :excited::excited::excited::excited:

http://www.greenday.com/site/uploadedextras/COVER_SMALL_1.jpg

From USA Today:

By Edna Gundersen, USA TODAY
Green Day is on the verge of a 21st Century Breakdown. The band's eighth album, due in May, doesn't retreat from the seething invective of 2004's Bush-whacking American Idiot, which sold 5.8 million copies and transformed the Bay Area trio from punk brats to serious rockers.
After Idiot's success, "we asked how much more ambitious can we be?" says singer/guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong. "We could take a sideways step or go back to our roots. We chose to move forward."

Expected to be one of 2009's blockbusters (bolstered by a summer tour), Breakdown addresses working-class struggles, internal demons, apathy and the fading American dream. "It's about reflecting what's been happening the past three years and putting it to melody with some bold statements."

The boldest may be March of the Dogs, which rails against religious hypocrisy. "I have nothing against religion," Armstrong says. "It's about preying on people's blind faith. I'm all for spirituality. There's nothing more spiritual than rock 'n' roll."

some new stuff from EW.com (http://music-mix.ew.com/2009/03/green-day-new-a.html)

Nearly five years after the release of their 2004 blockbuster American Idiot—it sold some 12 million copies worldwide, and yielded five singles—the boys from Berkeley return this spring with their eighth studio album, 21st Century Breakdown (not including, lest we forget, a little 2007 side project). And now we have an official release date! It's May 15, though you can get lead single "Know Your Enemy" digitally sooner, on a soon-to-be-announced day in April.
A few EW staffers were given a sneak peak last month (you can read about it here), and basically, it's not a huge departure for the band. Fans of Idiot will appreciate the trio's continued three-chord raging-against-the-machine and rock-opera flourishes, like dividing the album into three parts: "Heroes and Cons," "Charlatans and Saints," and "Horseshoes and Handgrenades."
As we've reported, they're not the only returning late '90s/early '00s pop-punk icons returning this year (see No Doubt, Blink 182, et al). Which one has you feeling most pogo-y in your old Dickies, readers?

When I was in middle school, I had a copy of Dookie on cassette that I listened through everyday for several months. I remember that the tape was blue...

That kind of sums up my feelings about the band- its mostly nostalgic for me and I don't really listen to most of the music today that I did when I was 13 or 14. Occasionally I listen to them because of the memories but they just didn't stick with me over the years the same way Weezer or the Smashing Pumpkins did.

On a side note, I thought Insomniac was a great punk album and demonstrated their roots were still intact after the major label deal. It didn't have the same mass appeal as Dookie due to its overtly angst ridden themes and thrashy arrangements, but I thought it was great. "No Pride" "Stuart and the Ave" and "Walking Contradiction" were all great in my opinion.

All right. Cool. I was thinking it probably sounded better in context with the album. Strikes me as more of a movement within a larger piece than an all-encompassing epic of punk rock ambition.

He brought a cute little 9-year old kid onstage. That was cool.

He kicked off one singer who didn't really know the words to Longview, but the next girl he brought up knew the song really well and she put on a great stage presence running all over the stage and out on the catwalk while singing.

Later in the show, the guitarist from the audience was very mellow, but played great!

I went to the San Jose show which was the only stop in the Bay Area and therefore it was their "hometown" show (they're from Oakland). Billy Joe's whole family was there. He brought up and introduced his brother, and then later brought his mom on stage. He gave her the Supersoaker, showed her how to use it, and had her soaking the audience. It was a total blast.

I was down front on the floor by the catwalk. The show completely rocked. Green Day played for almost three hours.

My cellphone is a piece of crap, but here's a photo I took from the floor.

Green Day ends tour with exemplary arena show
By Erik Pedersen via YahooNews

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – When Green Day toured behind its ambitious "American Idiot" record a half-decade ago, it was about a return to mega-stardom. This time, it's about legacy.

The pop-punk progenitors seem bent on cementing their place among the current rock elite, with an eye on the all-time best live acts. Tuesday's all-in performance at the Forum in Los Angeles was a mandate for the crowd to remember this show, the last of a seven-week North American jaunt. And memorable it was.

The focus was not on the music, though the band is promoting its second consecutive concept album, "21st Century Breakdown." No, the emphasis of this nearly three-hour marathon was squarely on entertainment and creating that sense of community that so few "important" rock acts seem to care about anymore. Sure, it was Professional Show Business, calculated every step of the way. But it also was one of the most flat-out enjoyable arena shows this town has seen in years.

Has Billie Joe Armstrong been keeping a journal of his band's gigs since their spectacular breakout in 1994 -- filing away every trick that ever got a rise from any crowd to unleash them all on this tour? It seemed that way. The feisty frontman pulled no punches in his zeal to obliterate the wall between performer and patron, simply insisting that the crowd enjoy themselves.

It was a syllabus for Arena Rock 101: booming pyrotechnics, call and response, count-offs, incited clap-alongs and arm waves, name-checking the tour stop ("Thank God for Los Angeleees!"), venturing into the crowd, bringing folks onstage (he yanked out one youngster's earplugs and hurled them away in mock disgust), cannon-firing T-shirts and TP into the throng, making exaggerated and drawn-out band intros. There even was a full mooning.

And the crowd lapped it up, acquiescing to Armstrong's every demand. He told stories and often made a point of inciting communal pride. "This is a f***ing rock 'n' roll show, not a tea party," he admonished. "You listen to Coldplay on your own f***ing time!" His easy command of the stage and crowd recalled vintage Springsteen.

Among songs that spanned its multiplatinum career, the band deployed teaser snippets of rock classics by bands renowned for their concert prowess, as if lobbying for inclusion into an exclusive club -- from "Satisfaction" and "Stairway to Heaven" to "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" and "Sweet Child o' Mine." A raucous version of Green Day's own "King for a Day" devolved into a show-stopping celebration of "Shout," complete with a sax-and-kazoo breakdown and side trips to Tom Petty, the Doors and Beastie Boys.

Everything was meticulously planned for maximum effect; Armstrong even coached folks he brought onstage to dive off it at a certain time. That might be anti-punk, but so what? It was pure rock 'n' roll, the creaky Forum adding to the old-school ambience of a great concert by one of today's greatest live bands -- one that's still firmly in its prime.

The American Idiot musical is set to begin previews on September 4th in Berkeley, California, and prep for the Green Day-inspired production is kicking into high gear: tickets for the limited run (scheduled through October 11th) are selling quickly, the Berkeley Repertory Theatre blogged a sneak peek at the show’s stage (revealing the set required extra support to accommodate its size and its massive walls will be covered in rock posters) and the show’s lead, John Gallagher, Jr. tweeted the cast had its first full-band rehearsal last night.

Idiot weaves Green Day’s punk opera together with established and up-and-coming stars of the theater world — but these are no ordinary musical theater actors. Many boast their own pop music careers, and several have starred in rock musicals including Spring Awakening, Hair and the Queen-based musical We Will Rock You: Check out the cast’s resumes, photos and videos of their live performances.

I've got no problem with music which is somewhat political and greenday isn't really leaning towards left or right so much as they are criticisizing american society as a whole, I DONT like my punk rock to be very preachy (IE Bad Religion) and I think greenday has mangaed to present social criticism without becoming obnoxiously preachy

It was so amazing. I've never seen anything like it. If you're out in NorCal and can see the show I highly recommend it.

All the actors we so lively, so into the characters, it just blew us away. The set was so cool with a live band spread about. It was an experience to remember.

Give me a full report. :)

Last Sunday I took my boys (ages 8 and 6) to see the American Idiot live theater show. They loved it! Luckily they are still young enough that a lot of the stuff went over their heads (e.g. sex and heroine). :ninja:

The acting, singing, and music was fantastic. As Sarah knows, the play incorporates all of the songs from the American Idiot album, four songs from 21st Century Breakdown, and a sweet love song that Billy Joe wrote when he was 19 for his then-girlfriend (and future wife). Apparently he has never recorded nor performed the song for an audience, so the stage presentation is its public debut.

After the show I bought the boys posters, and then when we were about to leave, the actors started coming out to that patio area. So the boys ended up getting one of their posters signed by about half a dozen cast members with a borrowed silver-ink sharpie. Had I known, I would have just brought the proper pens and they would have gotten even more (but like I said, they had to keep borrowing pens). It's a great poster from the original show. Even cooler knowing the show is now moving on to Broadway - and extra sweet having some original cast member autographs.

Anyway, I'm going to have the poster framed for them before they destroy it.

In talking with the lead actor after the show, he said they were going to New York.

- - -

Sarah and Feev, you two are going to have a blast in LA for the "mini-concert." I so wish I could make it. Sigh. Ah well, you better be sending me photos!

We'll have to go see GD again when they come back to the Bay Area!

Sarah, I got my tix yesterday too! I'm bringing the boys for their first concert ever. They have been asking me all year when they can go see Green Day. I haven't told them about this concert yet though since it is so long away. I'll probably crack in the next day or two.

Because the boys are young and the concert will end very late, I went ahead and sprung for the rip-off VIP parking. I just don't want to have to drag them twenty miles to the general parking out in the boondocks.

It just dawned on me that this will be my third Green Day concert of 2010! And, heck, it's your fourth counting the L.A. miniconcert.

Lisa, that is so awesome that you are going to see them in a just a few days! I wish we could all be there! :grouphug:

What did he say about Nirvana?

Don't remember the exactly quote but somewhere along the lines of calling them talentless and saying that the seattle scene was never needed and that grunge was nothing.

even though the seattle scene brought out punk rock, so to speak, because labels were looking for the next Nirvana and Alice In Chains, so without them greenday would be doing bar concerts.

Hence why greenday sucks.

I've looked and looked the only thing remotely bad I can find that Billie Joe said about Nirvana is this from the April issue of Kerrang magazine:

'I remember the first time we came to Europe, in 1991, we had a tape of Nevermind playing in the van throughout that whole tour. I'd heard Bleach but I didn't really get it; to me it sounded like Aerosmith or something. But with Nevermind I think Nirvana finally delivered a classic album for that generation of people who listened to it. Other generations had their Beatles or their Pink Floyds, and finally we had something that was worthy of that status, but was also unique to us.'

Was this what you're talking about, Jack? This was actually from Kerrang's Commemoration of Kurt, so while it starts out sounding a little bad it's actually quite complimentary. Nirvana, Green Day, and Alice In Chains came out the same year;1987 and all three were putting out big albums roughly with in the same time period.

Still I'd guess from the context of the quote I posted that they (Green Day) liked Nirvana quite a bit by the time Nevermind came out. Maybe the quote you heard was a misunderstanding... or Billie Joe was just exhausted as the little changeable mood indicator on your posts indicate you are. :P ...or maybe he was referencing his opinions pre Nevermind which as the article I quoted indicates were less than stellar. If such is the case well, as Pam said everyone gets an opinion.

I am not sure. It is possible I misunderstood what he said, but at the time I thought it was upfront. It has been so long though. I just don't listen to them and every once in a while tell people they suck or I hate them. Just to get a reaction.

I didn't manage to get a picture of this other kid they got up on stage, but they started to play the intro to a song and this kid had a sign that said "I know the words!!" so Billie Joe goes, "Hey you! Do you REALLY know the words?" and the kid was nodding madly, so Billie Joe says "How old are you?" the kid shouts "15!" Billie says "have you ever had sex with a woman?" and when the kid said no, he goes "Then you need to get the fuck up here RIGHT NOW!" and the kid sang the whole song and then stage dived off at the end - it was brilliant :D

Ahhh, that part was so fucking cool!! They didn't sing it all, it was part of a medley it kinda turned into Highway To Hell after the first verse and chorus, but EVERYONE in the stadium was singing it :D

They are just the best showmen ever. They really involved the audience in the show. Billy Joe reminded me of Freddie Mercury in that way. He kept singing little phrases like "Heeeeeey ooooooooh" and the audience sang it back - when we were piling out of the stadium at the end everyone was so hyped someone would shout "heeeeey oooooh" and EVERYONE kept echoing it...so, so cool  I think there's a real power in that many like minded people gathering together like that.

I may, not sure though. Green Day isn't high on my list of bands I would like to see anymore. I don't go to many concerts either. I've seen Brand New twice, Roger Waters play Darkside of the Moon and Slayer with Judas Priest. about it.

I love Green Day so much that I almost named Majel "September" because that's the month I got her, but I couldn't bear for when she passes away finally if I heard the song "Wake Me Up When September Ends".

Lisa and Pam are correct. If you're willing to sign up for a band's newletter, or better yet join their pay fan club, you get a lot of info and opportunity in advance. That's how I got the info/tix for one of those 'guerilla' shows that GD put on prior to the release of 21st CB as well as later getting tickets on presale when the official tour came around the first time and now this time.

I'm on board with that line of reasoning, Lady, although it is cool that you thought about naming a pet after a Green Day song.

Four more days....

Oh, how I envy you guys!
Missed the concert in Helsinki in July, and so hoped I would be on a business trip to SF in September to catch the one on the 4th. The trip never transpired, so now I'll be waiting (im)patiently for your photos!

The concert was fantastic! Sarah and I met up before and after the show. All the photos of she and I are on her camera though, so we'll have to wait until she checks in to see them.

In the meantime, here are a few from mine.

As I think I posted here, my two sons (ages 9 and 7) have been asking me for well over a year when they would be able to go see Green Day (ever since I saw them in April 2009 to be specific). This was finally their chance.

The boys were real troopers standing on their seats to get a view through the adults in front of them for the three hours that Green Day played - because no one sits at a Green Day concert.

This was the last U.S. show of the tour. After pulling this woman up on stage to sing Longview after which she stagedove off, Billie Joe pulled her back up on stage and gave her his guitar as a gift. How sweet is that?

Billie Joe Armstrong boosts 'Idiot' ticket sales

NEW YORK – Having Billie Joe Armstrong on Broadway was — not surprisingly — a pretty smart move for "American Idiot."

Producers of the rock musical say ticket sales soared to more than $1 million last week when the Green Day front man joined the show for eight performances ending Sunday.

The show's weekly average gross has been $740,000 since it opened on April 20 at the St. James Theatre. Last week it was $1,092,334.

Armstrong, who composed and co-wrote the musical, made his Broadway debut as "St. Jimmy." Actor Tony Vincent will resume performances in the role on Oct. 12, with understudies playing the part until then.

Yeah, I got the pre-announcement and I sooooo wanted to go see it again. On Broadway. With Billie Joe. But that's a bit of an expensive spontaneous trip from California. :(

No surprise his presence increased attendance like that!

Good grief, that's quite a surge. Not surprising of course - I'd have gladly been a part of it, too, had it been at all possible.

(BTW, my first thought after reading the first line was about a different "Idiot" - the one by Dostoevsky; so it gave me pause for a second)

Hmm, how quickly do the tickets usually sell out? I'm asking because there is a (very slim) chance that I'll have a business trip to the US late this year or in early 2013, and I'd LOVE to go to one of GD concerts. But I might not know the dates of my visit until around November, and I have an unpleasant feeling that by then it will be too late.

Well, I'm sure rehab will cost him a fair whack!

I still have bad memories of them cancelling a UK tour in 1994 when I had a ticket!
If I went now it would be full of kids. I'm too old (or feel too old) for that shit!:nope:
