I agree. It really is the best of the Bachman books, and one of King's better stories. It is haunting even during the reading, and I had started to really care about some of the characters right about the time they got their ticket. I can give this nothing less than A's for Plot and Character Development. I gotta give it a B for the ending though. I've always thought the ending was a little weak. The first time I read it, I had to read the end again as I thought I MUST have missed something.

I gave it three A's, but if I could have given it five of them, I would have.

All A's, but I really wish I could have given it more.
This is easily one of my most favorite books.

Out of curiosity, what didn't you like about the ending Sam or Ryan?

Well, Heather, it wasn't that I didn't like it per se. I gave it a C and I would have done so even if I had other options to go lower.

I really liked some of the explanations that Jean and others gave in the thread devoted to the story, but it wasn't that profound when I read it myself. My lasting impression was that I was disappointed that it was so ambiguous. Sometimes that works, as in the case of The Dark Tower, but the solid character foundations and clearly executed plot led me, personally, to expect more resolution.

I wish I could give you something a little more definitive Heather, but my copy has been loaned out. Maybe something that Sam writes will help me. :)

Three A's.
This is one of the best pieces of writing King's ever done.

I still have nightmares/thoughts/flashbacks regarding this story. One of my favorites of King's and all around favorites.

It's absolutely gripping and tragic and inspiring.

That's very interesting. I think that's actually what I loved so much about the ending, to me it was perfect, and I couldn't really see it ending any other way.
I think I posted over in that thread my interpretation of the ending but if I haven't I'll do so.

bba, The plot was very simple, thus not the driving point of the story.
The characters were not all that important, more what was being done to them, thus they were not developed fully.
