I gave this one CBA. But I know it's Aaron's favorite, so hopefully I won't get banned :)

I think if it were only "Low Men in Yellow Coats" I'd have given it A's across the board. Judging the entire book is A, B, A.

I gave it straight B's. Really liked Low Men and the title story, but the others were remarkably unremarkable in my opinion.

Hm. I liked Blind Willie the most...

Meh. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't an A for me. The concept was interesting and seemed to capture a lot of the essence of what was going on in the 60's, but the delivery was a little lacking in my opinion.

Its different for everyone.

Another A-B-A grade. I really enjoyed this book, but I didn't remember all the stories until I flipped through it again.

I still think the titular story is the strongest of the bunch, and would have made a much better film than Low Men. Low Men was good, but it didn't quite grip me nearly as much as Hearts in Atlantis did. I don't think you need to have gone to college, faced the draft or ever played hearts to understand what those kids were facing. I got a lot out of it.

No doubt an A on its own.

And I almost wish it were on its own. Not that it didn't work as part of the greater whole, but I think it might have worked better for some people on it's own. I've re-read it several times separate from the rest and it works perfectly.

It was, but Low Men in Yellow Coats saved the rest for me, so it's all B's.

I was worn out by the third story...I can't even now remember what it was called. Loved Low Men in Yellow Coats...it completely captivated me, and I felt a certain kinship with Hearts in Atlantis. When I was in college, there was no draft, but my boyfriend (now my hubby) was in Saudia Arabia preparing to invade Kuwait and my buddies and I had days-long spades tournaments so I could relate in my own way especially to that story. Sitting here now, I remember racing back to the house I shared with some other girls after class where the tv was never off CNN and calling home every day to see if mom or dad had heard anything from his mom.....wow that train of thought went off-topic..sorry

BBB - Loved the first story. The other 2 were ok...and I haven't been able to even get into the last "story"...so I left it and started to read Just After Sunset.

All "A"s for me. I love this book; it makes me feel good to read it. I mean I have really loved a lot of King's books, but this more than any other kept me engrossed and entertained throughout. I almost took up playing Hearts, but dont have anyone to play with me. :(

Hee, I think that is the game I learned to play in Hereford, Is is the game you have to bid trumps right?

Jean
01-12-2009, 08:20 AM
No. It's where you can't take hearts or the Queen of Spades, unless you take both all the hearts and the Queen of Spades. There's no bidding at any point.

Oh, yes, I remember the game I played was Spades then, not hearts. Thanks babe.
