Group I results have been added to the first post.

Aaron
01-13-2009, 11:05 AM
Yeah, those results arent terribly accurate. The tough thing with this round is that there is margin for error with people voting incorrectly, so I have to go behind the scenes and piece it all together. I have completed the scoring for Bag of Bones and Black House so far, and will try to finish the others soon and get them posted. Once I have done all of that, the polls should read correctly. As they are now, if you do some adding in each section and compare against the total votes (minus the NRs) then you will see there are definitely some issues.

mae
01-13-2009, 01:51 PM
Yes, this is not so straightforward. I arrived at the numbers you see by simply adding the number of votes in each category and getting the percentage of the highest score. So, for example, in Bag of Bones the category of "Strength of Plot" received 33 As, 28 Bs, and 9 Cs. That's 70 total votes in that category, with A getting the most (33), which accounts for 47.14% of the vote.

**Aaron Posting**

Okay, that's cool. It's just that those numbers do change a bit, due to the fact that certain votes have been removed due to incorrect voting. The numbers that are up now, in all but Duma Key, are the correct tallies.

mae
01-14-2009, 08:21 AM
Aaron, I'm not seeing any tallies for some reason. Each poll still has the initial info.

Aaron
01-14-2009, 08:44 AM
I havent added the scores yet. I was just saying that the number of votes for each option is now correct, so if you wanted to check your percentages now, it would be accurate according to the scores going on record.

mae
01-14-2009, 09:57 AM
Gotcha. I've gone over them all now, correcting several inaccuracies. Awaiting your official final grade.

mae
01-14-2009, 10:20 AM
Aaron, there seems to be one last issue with Bag of Bones: total votes is 89, with 17 NRs. That should make 72 unique votes, yet each category's votes add up to only 70.

Aaron
01-14-2009, 11:18 AM
That is because, per the voting rules, if a person voted more than once in one of the voting areas none of the grades they listed are counted. I can correct the numbers for each grade, but cannot change the number for how many people originally voted. So for Bag of Bones, we would get the average by dividing by 70, rather than 72.

mae
01-14-2009, 11:25 AM
Good, that is what I have done. All averages and percentages up now are correct.

mae

I thought it would be fun to post some statistics about our thirty books that moved on to the 2nd Round. So, for anyone who may care:

Of 30 books, 23 are novels (76.7%), 6 are collections (20%), and 1 is a non-fiction book (3.3%). The decades are represented thusly: 4 books from the 1970s (13.3%), 9 books from both the 1980s and the 1990s (30%), and 8 books from the 2000s (26.7%). Seven different years are represented by two books: 1982, 1984, 1987, 1991, 1996, 2004, and 2008. And eleven years of King's output are not represented at all: 1974, 1980, 1981, 1988, 1989, 1992, 1993, 1995, 2005, 2006, 2007.

As things stand now, IT is leading.

 Fantastic news. Hopefully it'll stay that way.

Now I'm a bit confused. I'm not seeing overall scores for the books yet, only percentages of what letter grades they got, so I'm assuming that has yet to be calculated?

Aaron
01-18-2009, 01:53 PM
They have been calculated for the first two voting groups, but arent posted in this thread yet. If you click on the closed thread/poll for each book, you will find all of the scoring added to the first posts of each applicable thread.

The number values are based on a system of A = 3, B = 2, C = 1. Each grading area received an average score and then those averaged scores were averaged for the overall score. Then that score is added to the Round 1 score.

Thanks Aaron. I hadn't thought to look there.

This is really amazing, the amount of data we have collected doing this.

I'm hoping we can get some total numbers on how many voted when all is said and done. :pirate:

Aaron
01-18-2009, 02:19 PM
That should be pretty easy, Matt. I would just need to create formula in my spreadsheet and we can tell how many voted in each round and well as overall.

mae
01-18-2009, 02:27 PM
I'm going right now through the first two groups and updating everything in this thread as far as numbers and percentages. The table will also be updated.

I don't see how a member can vote more than once.:orely:

Aaron
01-19-2009, 10:48 AM
It's not that they voted once, but that they selected more than one option in each voting field, which nullifies all of their votes. So those numbers are taken from each voting selection, but I cannot remove the fact that they voted in the first place, so it will still say that more people voted than the number we ended up using. Essentially, due to the limitations of the board it is inaccurate, while the spreadsheet that I keep has all of the correct numbers.

The first two posts have been updated. DT2 is indeed in first place over It by 0.045524297 points or just 0.60%. Remember these are still not the final standings. That's what Round 3 is for.

Sam
01-26-2009, 09:03 PM
Maybe but still...
Makes me wonder how The Stand shall do. IT was clearly a better story to me, but not to everyone. Of course The STand surpasses them all for me.

Heather19
01-27-2009, 07:22 AM
I've been wondering the same thing.

mae
01-27-2009, 07:26 AM
It's obvious that the top three will very likely be DT2, It, and The Stand. We'll see what the order will be like. I'd be very surprised if any of these will be bumped off to the fourth spot.

Matt
01-27-2009, 08:10 AM
As it should be imo.

The preliminary results for the last two rounds are now up in the first post. Awaiting Aaron's final scores for these books, and Round 2 is done! :excited: On to the 3rd round!

Aaron
01-29-2009, 01:58 PM
I will likely post all of the scores for the last two groups tomorrow. I have been holding the scores for group 5 back so that we can have a better reveal of the top ten.

Aaron
02-01-2009, 08:56 AM
Okay, Round 2 has now ended and the results are in. For the individual scores for the books in voting groups five and six, you can refer to the first post of the closed threads/polls, or you can refer to pablo's table once it is updated. The exciting part, of course, is that we now have our top ten books that will be moving on to our third and final round. They are listed as follows, with their current total scores from highest to lowest.

1. The Drawing of the Three 7.533333333

2. The Stand 7.525725232

3. IT 7.487809036

4. The Waste Lands 7.322916667

5. The Dark Tower (DT7) 7.293040293

6. The Talisman 7.277326108

7. Different Seasons 7.209375

8. The Green Mile 7.190527065

9. The Long Walk 7.1490952

10. The Shining 7.133188875

So there you have it. Round three will be the "Re-Read Face Off Round". Each book in the top ten will go head to head with the other nine in a series of polls. The voting will be very simple. Out of the two books competing in the poll, you select which of the two you would rather re-read, given the choice. These polls will last for one week. At the end of the round the winner of each poll will receive 0.1 added to their score. This means that any book has the potential to raise its overall score by up to 0.9. Round 3 will begin February 9th.

You can't? I figured the DT books would go far (considering this is a DT forum) and DoTT usually seems to be the consensus pick as favorite DT book (I sure as hell know it's mine) so I'm not surprised at all. In fact, the top 3 looks exactly as I expected it would. :)

Matt
02-01-2009, 10:23 AM
I was concerned that the books viewed as individuals would get lost to the big one's like The Stand and IT.

But I agree, the final list looks exactly as I would have liked it to be. With the amount of votes this thing has gotten...should be a good indication.

So any surprises with the Top Ten, guys? Any book you wish had made it? Any book you wish hadn't? Personally, I'm kinda miffed Pet Sematary missed out.

By the way, if you look at the second table in this thread, the one with all the changes in the standings, it's curious to note that two books made it into the Top Ten from being on the outside, and two books thus fell out: The Shining and The Green Mile got in, displacing Wolves of the Calla and Duma Key.

Heather19
02-01-2009, 03:33 PM
I'm very excited to see The Long Walk in there. I was really worried that it wasn't going to make it, so I'm very happy it's still in the running.

And I guess I'm the only one surprised to see DoTT as number 1. I know it's not over yet, but I really expected it to be The Stand and It as 1 & 2.

no Duma Key?!

no Desperation??!!

no Misery???!!!

no Wolves????!!!!

no Black House, for God's sake????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!

mae
02-02-2009, 07:22 AM
Wolves just missed out on the tenth spot by mere 0.000569098, which is astonishingly small :) But, on the other hand, great job by The Shining to move all the way from 15th to take the last spot. Black House didn't really have much of a chance, being in 17th place, and only gaining 0.47% in the 2nd Round. Not to mention Desperation, which sat at a whopping number 28. Duma Key was the other displaced book, making way for The Green Mile. Being 10th going into the 2nd Round, Duma Key really had no room for error, and had to gain points, not lose them. It did just that by losing 0.77% and so it fell out. And Misery, despite gaining a hefty 1.09% remained in its 12th seat.

And The Running Man is hugely underrated or at least underappreciated. (or underread) It's what TV is turning into. Seriously.

I'm not surprised about DT2. It's the epitome of King's writing, I believe. It was written at his peak of creativity (if you'll recall Round 1, Bracket 5 was the one containing DT2 and four other books from the mid to late 1980s - every book in that bracket made it into Round 2, a winner, a runner-up, and three wildcards).

Aaron
02-03-2009, 08:32 AM
If I am not mistaken, he has also stated that it is the favorite book of all of his children. I am surprised, but not because it doesnt deserve to be there. I am surprised that it was able to overcome the bandwagon of The Stand.
