The "Reading List 2009 Goals" thread in Dutch Hill inspired me to create this thread. Is there a particular part of your collection you hope to complete or improve on this year? Are you planning on collecting a new author? Branching into the comics?

Personally I plan to vastly increase my Gaiman collection, starting with The Sandman series - which I owned previously and ended up selling for financial reasons a few years back :beat:

I'd also love to get the rest of the Grant DT books (I have WoTC so far, thanks to Jerome :couple: )

Great idea.

Let's see - I would like to complete my CGC Graded 9.8 Dark Tower comics collection. Fill in the missing graded issues and continue to add to the set as new comics are issued.

I have ordered and am very much looking forward to getting my Artists Edition of LSoE. I can't wait for that ( fingers crossed for a remarque'd copy ).

Well I always aim high...

This year I would like to finally add a S/L Stand to my collection.

Would also like to acquire a S/L or Lettered Regulators.

Economy going the way it is, whichever comes first at a price I can't refuse.

Wise decision!

I want to start collecting novels from authors I have yet to read, namely Kurt Vonnegut and Cormac McCarthy. I want to expand my Philip K. Dick library (I only own The Man in the High Castle), and as far as comics go - I really really want to start Doom Patrol.

You won't regret it, it's an excellent series

I'm going to continue my collection of 1sts in the Dark Tower series if I can. All the comics that come out and I have "He is Legend" coming in the mail I think. :fairy:

Great thread idea, Lisa.

My 2009 collecting goals are:

1) Obtain books already ordered and often already paid for:
Gaiman's Coraline S/L, Koontz's Odd Thomas 1st/1st signed, Songs of the Dying Earth S/L (w/ Gaiman), He is Legend - Slipcased (King/Hill), LSOE S/L, LSOE AE, Big Book of Necon trade edition, and probably last, but not least: The Secretary of Dreams, Vol. II S/L.

2) Get a decent bookcase with lockable glass doors.
No locks on the doors though.

3) Expand my modest signed Gaiman collection.

4) Grow my nascent signed Vonnegut collection, specifically through the Easton Press books.

5) Pick up some or all of the sketch and/or color variant issues of the Dark Tower comic series subsequent to the Gunslinger Born story arc - I don't have much past that point other than the standard editions.
So far: obtained all released color variants for both TLRH and Treachery story arcs. Working on the sketch variants.

6) Think about obtaining Firestarter S/L, Christine S/L and/or Cujo S/L.
Obtained Skeleton Crew S/L and Dolan's Cadillac S/L.

7) Continue to lust after everyone else's new acquisitions.

I'm pretty sure that at least #1 and #7 are achievable goals.

As many possible of the french 1st editions & looking for the few french items that i dont have or never heard about :-)
So far, the only 1st editions I own are what i consider as the scarcest and the earlier work, because i moved a lot.

Oh, and publish 2 books!

However, i plan to move to Paris in september, so, being a student, i'll have to watch even more my expenses.... and have place to store everything lol

So (if everything's go as planned), if anyone is going through Paris... :-)

My goals are pretty modest for this upcoming year. They were bigger, but I was laid off from one job, and have had my hours cut from the other recently - I don't plan on dropping out of school anytime soon, so money will be tight this year.

Anyways, I'm hoping to get:

1) 1st Editions of the Shining (US & UK)
2) a 1st edition 'Salem's Lot, preferably the US, but would settle for the UK
3) S/L Skeleton Crew or Regulators
4) S/L From a Buick 8
5) Some miscellaneous Slade stuff

Turtlex - do you need the End World Almanac in 9.8? I've got one, PM me if interested.

This year I'd like to:

Try and buy the variant covers to the Dark Tower comics.
Get the DT books in hardcover, most of mine are paperbacks at the moment
Get that limited edition Sisters of Eluria/Gunslinger book
Collect miscellaneous Dark Tower stuff
Continue collecting Rocketeer merchandise
Read the rest of Gaiman's Sandman
Add more books to my J.R.R. Tolkien library

Up until this year I had no idea that JRR Tolkien wrote anything other that LOTR. I found The Histories of Middle Earth online and now i've started a Tolkein collection myself. The DT series and LOTR series are pricless to me.

William50, I feel the same way about my DT and Tolkien books.

Tolkien wise I'm trying to get anything and everything about him and from him, much like my King collection.

There are great bios on Tolkien and his friendship with C.S. Lewis, other stories he wrote, and just books upon books about LOTR and the Hobbit.

My goals would be to get into collecting DT comics, buy variations of already published King stories, try to get all King novels in hardcover, try to get scans of King's articles from his highschool newspaper the Drum, the Libson Enterprise and The Maine Campus. And collect any other material King decides to put out his year.
Although not a collecting goal, I want to get accepted into the university of South Florida.:)

Continue looking for the 'unique' collectibles & promo items, more ARCs (and yes, John - Under the Dome!), and the illusive college works. Find and be able to afford my Gunslinger #64.

Oh, and new bookcases for all of it! :D

I need a US 1st of Christine to complete my SK first editions.

Would like to pick up a S/L Skeleton Crew and Christine. Also a S/L Sec. of Dreams II, if it ever actually gets released.

Would like to find a S/L version of Ham on Rye and Factotum (Charles Bukowski)

Well, I guess my wish list would include:

Sphere Gunslinger Proof
signed UK Song of Susannah

and...owning several new Whelan remarques from LSOE!

I don't think there is. Macdonald used exactly the same page layout, pagination, fonts, etc. that Everest House used. It is virtually an identical book to the US edition. If they were going to do that there would have been no need for a proof.

2009...hum

DT I-III #464
S/L Skeleton Crew

Trading any of my existing S/L for one #464 as I am looking to get a complete set of DT + books connected to DT in matching #'s.

King's underwear, signed and framed. Just kidding.

When the money allows it, I'm going to buy home stuff from Betts' Bookstore. Magazines with King's stories and essays, and some hardcovers. I've always wanted the US hardcover of N&D, plus a few other (as I'm not really into the UK ones).
And trying to get scans of more rare stuff, newspaper articles (especially the essays and letters published in Bangor Daily News).

There's also a Danish writer named Dennis Jürgensen whom I want to start collecting. He's been called the Danish Stephen King. He's pretty good, he often uses lots of humor in his works, and he's met the same snobbish attitude here as King has in the US (you know, among the so-called academics).

Tippy, out of curiosity, why sell off all your DT comic books?

You know, I just never got into them. I bought the first five issues, and then just stopped. I decided that since they were not writen by Stephen King, they were not truely part of the tale. Here is what I have for sale:

All are GUNSLINGER BORN.

I have:

#1 Color Variant (2nd printing)
#2 Regular
#2 Color Variant
#3 Regular
#3 Sketch Variant
#3 Color Variant
#4 Regular
#4 Sketch Variant
#4 Color Variant

First Quarter 2009 is wrapping up. How is everyone doing in terms of their lists? Any progress? Gone in another direction?

Here is my update:

Great thread idea, Lisa.

My 2009 collecting goals are:

1) Obtain books already ordered and often already paid for:
Gaiman's Coraline S/L, Koontz's Odd Thomas 1st/1st signed, Songs of the Dying Earth S/L (w/ Gaiman), He is Legend - Slipcased (King/Hill), LSOE S/L, LSOE AE, Big Book of Necon trade edition, and probably last, but not least: The Secretary of Dreams, Vol. II S/L.

(So far: obtained all released color variants for both TLRH and Treachery story arcs. Need one more sketch variant from TLRH (issue #3). Working on the sketch variants for Treachery.)

6) Think about obtaining Firestarter S/L, Christine S/L and/or Cujo S/L.
(Obtained Skeleton Crew S/L and Dolan's Cadillac S/L which were not on my original list but should have been.)

7) Continue to lust after everyone else's new acquisitions.

My King goals are getting a First of Carrie and Night Shift, and a S/L of Firestarter. Previously these have been too expensive to consider adding to my collection, but since prices have dropped to about a quarter of what they were three years ago hopefully I get these this year.

Also I’m always looking to add to my Gaiman collection, as well as my Bradbury collection. There are always little nuggets from these authors that keep popping up.

Anyways, I'm hoping to get:

1) 1st Editions of the Shining (US & UK)
2) a 1st edition 'Salem's Lot, preferably the US, but would settle for the UK
3) S/L Skeleton Crew or Regulators
4) S/L From a Buick 8
5) Some miscellaneous Slade stuff

My goals definitely went in a different direction in the first quarter.

1) I no longer collect UK 1sts.
2) I bought a S/L of the Stand (certainly an upgrade on From a Buick 8!)
3) Still looking for a 1st ed 'Salem's Lot
4) Still thinking about a S/L Skeleton Crew or Regulators this summer
5) Finally got a PC copy of DTVII
6) Acquired a remarqued 3rd ed Gunslinger
7) Have a S/L Black House w/ small remarque on the way!
8 ) Bought a lettered edition of "The Rutting Season" by Brian Keene and have a lettered edition of "Remains" by Michael McBride on layaway.
9) And as always, I've been picking up miscellaneous Slade stuff here and there!

So.... change is good!

I got quite a few things, but for the first time my books are on display. They used to be hidden away in the spare rooms. So... now my wife can see them for the first time! <Gulp>

Bring forth the photos! And don't hide them on your website, I expect a full tour of your bookshelves in your collection thread :) maybe a couple of pics of the new house, too?

As for myself, I'll make a list when I get home. I'm not sure if I want to know how much I spent, though... (probably relatively little compared to the high-end collectors but I did spend a couple of thousands I'm afraid...)

Haha...Yeah! This is MY time to shine!

Actually, I really want to sell everything except my core matched number set...all I'm really interested in doing is adding to that set, if the books I'm missing miraculosly show up - DT II, Firestarter, Stand, Regulators, and a few of the minor s'ls.

Everything else is expendable...

I was going to start a list for everything I bought this year, but when I hit more than 50 items, I decided to forget it. I got lots of proofs, more than 12 different versions of Under the Dome (proofs both US and UK, UK pamphlet, US s/l, US Collector's editions--one signed, one not, 2 UK s/l, a signed US trade, etc.) and lots more.

Summarizing:

1) I sold most of my Dutch collection
2) I almost completed my collection of UK 1st/1sts
3) I almost completed my collection of US 1st/1sts
4) I completed my collection of the gift editions that I wanted to have
5) I branched out into collecting ARCs/proofs. This is what I will work on most in the (near) future, together with expanding my hardcover collections of other authors. I still don't feel the urge to collect S/L editions (King or other authors) :)

Note that I bought more King than listed, but I also sold some items.

That all depends on what you want to spend Alan G. I DO know where you can get one of the Firestarter S/L, but it's overpriced in my opinion. Having said that, if I were to win the lottery I'd get a copy and wouldn't worry about what I paid for it.

I got the Firestarter S/L dust jacket from AbeBooks, after Tomas (The Collector) mentioned it in his news letter. Got it for $40... but I've not seen another one for sale (but that doesn't mean much as I've only been collecting for a short time).
