Thanks, bluelph24 - I'm thinking to put together some kind of comic promo item checklist in the future.

Right now, I'm just focusing on the comics themselves. I love the Bugle though, hard to find for sure.

Thank you though, sincerely!

Aaron - The BMV is hard to find. I went through all kinds of circles and jumps to get one that had been graded at 9.8. There are only 44 of them in the entire world that are CGC graded that high! And only 55 of them that are CGC graded in total.

The BMV is the same Jae Lee cover as the number 1 issue, but has NOT FOR RESALE on the bottom left.

Pam, could that be considered an Advance Reading Copy (ARC)?

John - That's a good question. I'm not sure though, because as far as I know, it wasn't really an advanced copy, but just a freebie for the Book Market sellers.

Gretchen - the BMV is only for the first arc, for Gunslinger Born.

From all I've seen and checked via CGC, it was just the first.

Honestly, though Marvel expected a hit comic, I don't think they expected it to be a HUGE as it was.

Comic shops dont tend to keep Promo as a rule, once its gone its gone.

Your best bet would be Ebay, thats where i got mine.

I got the daily bugle for £1 or about $1.25

Oh man, I am missing the Gunslinger sketchbook and Daily Bugle paper. I wonder if I can track them down at comic shops?

Your best bet would be for eBay at this point. Or an online comic book store with a big inventory. Both were gobbled up pretty fast. I've not see the Bugle around much - its sort of a newspaper, but the sketchbook comic one-shot shows up.

ETA: Yes, what pickle said !!! :D

Can someone please explain the grade classification?

turtlex
12-31-2008, 08:30 AM
Hey herbert - This is their website : http://www.cgccomics.com

CGC is an independent grading company ( Certified Guaranty Company=CGC ).

The collector submits their comics to them for grading ( either via a local comic shop, an online comic shop, by joining the Collectors Society, or they also visit several Comic Cons a year where you can drop off comics for grading ).

Most current comics, if very carefully pulled and inspected, you could probably find at a 9.6 or 9.8 grade. I'm trying for a complete DT set, all at a minimum of 9.8.

Seeing anything higher than a 9.8 is not too common, but it happens.

Joe Hill seems to have a huge about of 9.9 and 10 comics out there, I've noticed. Very unusual.

As with all collectibles, small little things can really bring down a comic grading value.

This is the grading scale they use :

10.0 - Gem Mint
9.9 - Mint
9.8 - Near Mint/Mint
9.6 - Near Mint +
9.4 - Near Mint
9.2 - Near Mint -
9.0 - Very Fine/Near Mint
8.5 - Very Fine +
8.0 - Very Fine
7.5 - Very Fine -
7.0 - Fine/Very Fine
6.5 - Fine +
6.0 - Fine
5.5 - Fine -
5.0 - Very Good/Fine
4.5 - Very Good +
4.0 - Very Good
3.5 - Very Good -
3.0 - Good/Very Good
2.5 - Good +
2.0 - Good
1.8 - Good -
1.5 - Fair/Good
1.0 - Fair
.5 - Poor

Oh man, I am missing the Gunslinger sketchbook and Daily Bugle paper. I wonder if I can track them down at comic shops?
The sketchbooks were freebies, the Daily Bugle cost a quarter.

My impression at the time was that the sketchbooks were easier to come by because they were freebie promor items to the retailers, whereas the retailers have to make the decision whether to stock something that costs them money, and many don't stock the Daily Bugle because normally it may not sell well.

Quite a while back I bought all (not an enormous amount) of the Daily Bugles that a local shop had and gave them away at TDT. turtlex and Wizardsrainbow are getting a couple stragglers that I came across after a recent discussion.

Anyway, TCG (Ian is it?), if you still do not have a sketchbook, PM me your name and address and I'll send you one.

I've noticed that there are RRP variants available once in a while (online retailers and eBay). I found this on the Mile High Comics site:

The DC RRP (Retailer Roundtable Program) is an invitation-only conference that DC sponsors approximately every 18 months. The original purpose of the program was to give the DC editorial and marketing staffs the opportunity to ask selected retailers (in a very private environment) about what they thought of DC's efforts during the previous year, and to explore how DC might be able to improve in the future. This program began in the early 1990's with just a few comics retailers attending, and has now expanded to over 60 retailer organizations being represented at this year's conference.

Anyone know more about them and if the comics are worth more than the regular editions/variants? I'm also confused, I guess, that if DC sponsors the meeting, could there be Marvel variants? Here's an example of an eBay auction I found. (http://cgi.ebay.com/Marvel-Stephen-Kings-Dark-Tower-7-Variant-Retailer-RRP_W0QQitemZ290145909624QQihZ019QQcategoryZ3955QQ ssPageNameZWD1VQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1638 Q2em118Q2el1247)

At these conferences, special editions of comics are given out to retailers... you can guess the rest. Yup, highly collectible.

Is it just me or is anyone else annoyed by the 123134 different comic books that make up the 15 comic books released?

I'm a collector, but hate when a company so blatantly rips off it's consumers by releasing 342 versions of the exact same thing.

turtlex
01-06-2009, 12:54 PM
Personally, though I feel a little gullible about it - I do like the multiple covers. They're very diverse in their interpretations and the art work is amazing.

On the other hand, it's killing me trying to get a complete set of all arcs at CGC 9.8 !!!

John - I'm looking up some RRP comic stuff now and hope to have more info soon.

Aaron - How about a Green Lantern power ring for Hannah... that trumps an engagement ring!

Hannah - Nah, I'm just kidding.

jhanic
01-06-2009, 01:28 PM
I agree about feeling a bit gullible buying all the different variants, but I too like the diverse drawings. This upsets me, though, because the sketch variants for The Stand are the same as the main edition, but in black and white. I wish they'd come up with something more original.

John

turtlex
01-06-2009, 01:38 PM
Good point about The Stand sketch covers, John.

The DT covers are all different.

Maybe Bermejo only does a single idea for each issue and just works it through?

I don't know ( and am concentrating on the DT comics now.. though I have a few Stand issues including a 9.9 ).

Aaron
01-06-2009, 02:00 PM
Yeah, on my current budget I wouldnt buy any of the sketch variants for The Stand. It was kind of a let-down that they are all the same.

turtlex
01-06-2009, 02:12 PM
Okay, regarding RRP comics - apparently there is some confusion and mis-labelling in the whole comic collector world regarding this "label".

I think I will start an RRP thread so we can share info.

Tical, thanks for the heads-up on the error.

I just checked over at CGC and if they did the grading on those Gunslinger Guidebooks, they aren't considering them anything different than the "correct" copies - there is not a special entry for them.

Do you know if it was CGC or PGX who did the grading on those?

As of right now, CGC shows the following :

21 total copies of the Gunslinger Guidebook graded.
11 at 9.8 Universal
5 at 9.8 Signature Series
3 at 9.6 Universal
1 at 9.6 Signature Series
1 at 9.4 Universal

I have no idea how many were released of the error comic.I know that the person on ebay i got it from had at least three when i bought mine.I know at least 2 that were graded by CGC 9.8 that i regret not bidding on.I don't know about PGX usually I don't mess with their graded comics.CGC didn't put the Manufacturer's error in the place where they usually put the variant and sketch bold lettering would go it was on the other side where they put pedigree labels,so it doesn't get its own section.I thought they usually give errors a qualified grade but i guess it depends on what the error is.

Tical - Friend, where are you located? That Gunslinger Born hardcover you posted has a slightly different cover than the US version.

Officially, the Marvel's Best Selling Authors isn't part of the comic runs, which is why it's not on these checklists.

Currently, I plan on putting it with the promos, etc, when we finish up the King Comic Catalog.

Tical - It's still there, since you used thumbnails, they don't copy when you quote the post.

I didn't realize that was the Guidebook Error. So, basically, its the hardcover advertisement that shows up on the outside. Freaky.

Gonna have to keep my eye open for that one.

You should consider starting a User Gallery, since you've got a nice collection started. Once you do that - you could link the photo's from the gallery here ( or anywhere ) and they'd come down with a quote.

Thanks again for posting about it.

Friends, the Dark Tower Comics PDF link - ( in the first entry ) - has been updated with the Treachery Hardcover and the new Fall of Gilead arc.

No details are available yet on covers, variants, etc. but the entries are there.

Enjoy.

Thank you, Matt, for loading the pdf !

There might be some updates to the checklist again soon... based on the fact that it's been reported that Jae Lee will not be doing the artwork on the newest arc. Apparently Richard Isanove will be taking over that. No comment yet on the covers, so I'm unclear if Jae will still be doing the covers and the sketch variants.

I will udpate once we have confirmation.

Can anyone tell me if the Guide to Gilead has been released yet? I see from your list at the start of this thread that it is meant to be out 02/2009.
Thanks

Hi Jon - Welcome to the site! There were some delays in publishing the oneshots - Sorcerer and Guide To Gilead. Both are now scheduled for early April ( i believe April 8th ). I updated the first entry and we'll have a new PDF uploaded soon.

I was just on Marvel's website and it said that Guide To Gilead will be released on 04/08 and Sorcerer on 04/15. At least that is what the website says this week.:arg::angry:
I went to my local comic shop thinking that Sorcerer was being released today, and it was not there. (last week the website said it will be released today.)

Marvel Comics is really starting to piss me off!:pullhair:

Does anyone know what will be out comic wise after Fall of Gilead? Will they be doing more DT comics or will that be the end?

I believe the Guide to Gilead was confirmed for Wed., April 8, and Sorcerer is still slated for April 15. Of course, as always, this is subject to change...!

I also saw from a couple of sources that the Treachery HC is coming out April 8 as well, instead of April 22! I hope that bears out, I have only been collecting the hardcovers for this series - I have too many boxes full of comics as it is...! :arg:

CG, maybe the fifth installment will have to do specifically with Jericho Hill, following the fall of Gilead? I seem to remember reading somewhere that there were to be five mini-series, totalling 30 issues or so, and Fall of Gilead is the fourth (unless they are counting the Sorcerer one-shot).

There will be another after Fall of Gilead. I had heard, originally, at least five arcs. Plus, these comics are making a nice, pretty profit for Marvel. They're very popular.

Oh, and I just got an announcement from Amazon saying End of April for the Treachery HC. This is probably the third adjustment to release date... honestly, just send it !!

Wayne, welcome to the site! Are you collecting all the different covers on the HCs as well.

Wayne, welcome to the site! Are you collecting all the different covers on the HCs as well.

Thanks, turtlex! I am only collecting one copy of each of the Marvel hardcovers, just for my own reading purposes...! I considered buying the individual issues, but I already have over 6000 comics, and I am running out of room in my closet! Besides, the hardcovers look nice on my bookshelf!

I've been buying both the monthly and hard cover DT books. The only complaint I have about the hard cover is that it doesn't collect the prose work from the back of each monthly comic when it is in it.

Does anyone know if they plan on releasing that stuff or if they are at all?

turtlex
04-05-2009, 02:33 AM
As far as I know, they are not going to include all the "bonus" stuff from the published comics in any of the hardcovers. Most of the essays, interviews, maps, etc will only be in the comics ( or online, since a lot of the interviews are over at marvel.com before they are published in the comics ).

I am getting each comic as it comes out, plus the variants if I can, plus all the comics ( every cover/variant ) CGC graded, plus I'm buying the hardcovers ( every different cover, too ) ... yeah, all you people holding MVL stock can send me thank you cards!

The Cosmic Geek
04-05-2009, 04:25 PM
That is awesome, Turtlex. I want to do that but right now can't afford it, but am definitely getting the issues and hardcover trades.

I finally found a copy of the free sketch book for DT that came out a few years ago. Cost me 5 bucks, but I got it, so that is all I care about.

Hi, I am new and this is my first post. I would just like to comment that there are some additional collectible items I haven't seen mentioned:
1) posters
a) for Gunslinger Born, there was a small promo "poster" and a large door poster
b) for LRH there was a full size poster
c) for Treachery there was atleast one version of a door poster. I have seen 2 other versions posted for sale on comic store websites. Not sure if the pics are "wrong" and there's really only one version.
d) for Sorcerer there is a door poster
2) "Postcard"
for Treachery there was a postcard issued - - I think along with the Midnight variant cover
3) Marvel's Best Selling Authors - - spotlight on S. King
Overlook Connection lists this ancilliary item: http://overlookconnection.com/product_info.php?products_id=7466

Happy Collecting.

Can you buy the Sorcerer: Tarot Cards separately from the comic? They are listed separately in the catalog on this site, implying you can.
Thanks!

turtlex
04-08-2009, 07:45 AM
Hi avip2u - Welcome to the site and thanks for posting.

No, you can't get the Tarot cards separately. Those entries are there for close-up examples of the Tarot cards as they are in the Sorcerer comic. If you look at the entries - they indicate "as appears in..." and there's also a grab of them as they are in the comic.

Right now - we're just capturing the comics themselves, but thanks very much for the list and I'll keep those items in mind as we expand the catalog. There are also a couple of bookmarks, if you're going to complete lists on your own.

Be careful, though, as I've noticed that some people on eBay are making up their own posters from grabs of the comics.

Thanks again, and I look forward to your posts!

Ari - The tarot cards are featured in the Sorcerer One-Shot. I just happened to find close-ups of the artwork, so posted them. They're never really shown that clearly in the actual comics. I put the page they're in at the bottom of each.

This is how they look in the comics :

Thanks. :)

Yesterday I read all Fall of Gilead and the first number of Jericho Hill.

I must say that I might be one of the very few that really enjoyed Fall of Gilead. I think it's the first of the series I really didn't want it to end and wished to have more numbers.

Have we pretty much determined that there are only two editions of the last story arc issues (regular and color variant) rather than the usual three (i.e. no sketch variant)?

Thanks.

FYI Comic Tower Citizens ... I'm in the process of creating a new check list. This time, we'll have a single check list of the all current comics that Sai King is involved in.

This "one list" will replace the two existing check lists. The format will also change subtly. If you are peculiar about your check lists, and want to ensure you have the info in a format you're familiar with, I suggest you download a copy of the current list from the first entry in this thread and keep it for future reference.

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
