This is Jerome's review. We posted it here so more folks would be able to see it.

Sounds like a real fun novella. Hopefully it'll be collected by King in another four novella book, he's long overdue since Different Seasons and Four Past Midnight. He's got this, and a new one he just finished called Mortality. So, two more to go.

I changed it so it links to (rather than duplicates) the previously posted review.

It isn't a novella, in fact it's only ~40 pages, which is why I kept the review short. I didn't want to give away too much.

What is and what is not a novella sometimes seems rather muddy. King called "N." a novella, and that one's shorter than "Throttle."

From Wikipedia:

While there is some disagreement as to what length defines a novella, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science_Fiction_and_Fantasy_Writers_of_America) Nebula Awards (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nebula_Award) for science fiction (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science_fiction) define the novella as having a word count (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Word_count) between 17,500 and 40,000.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Novella#cite_note-0)

By that definition Throttle is not a novella.

I agree, I don't consider Throttle to be a novella. At best, it's a long short story.

I think it's simply a marketing trick. Throttle (and other short stories before) was announced as a novella to make potential buyers believe they get more for their money. Let's wait and see how long Mortality turns out to be.

There is no really definitive length for a novella though.

On the paperback of From the Borderlands it says "Stationary Bike" is a novella, and "The Things They Left Behind" in Transgressions was also billed as a novella. Then again, King's story was the shortest one in that anthology.
And is "Throttle" shorter than "Behind," or longer or about the same length?

I think we are all right in our own rights.

Randall said that throttle is about 40 pages...

The Things They Left Behind has 11,500 words, Stationary Bike has 13,200 and Throttle 13,500.

The Mist, in comparison, has 50,000 words, and The Langoliers even has 91,000.
