View Full Version : Best Antagonist--Nominations Closed

Aaron
11-14-2008, 04:46 PM
This thread is for members to nominate characters for the Award for Best Antagonist. In order for a character to be eligible for nomination they must satisfy the definition of an antagonist listed below, and they must be a character from one of Stephen King's published works, including any of his novels, novellas, and short stories. Characters from titles published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman are also eligible.

To nominate a character for this category, simply post your choice in this thread. In order for a character to be placed onto the voting ballot for the Award the nominated character must be seconded and thirded, also in this thread. This is to ensure that we do not have an overly long list of contenders for the Award, and that--by virtue of the nomination process--each character listed on the ballot is guaranteed to have at least something of a following come voting time. Please note that you MUST clearly state in your post that you are seconding or thirding a nomination for it to count. Feel free to deliberate and discuss your choices in this thread.

While you may second or third a nomination more than once, we ask that there be only one new nomination per member.

Antagonist- The character who opposes or struggles with the protagonist/hero in a literary work. Adversary; villain.

Cujo in Cujo.

razz
11-14-2008, 04:55 PM
now there's a question; was Cujo a protagonist or antagonist?

Aaron
11-14-2008, 04:57 PM
Antagonist. He was the opposition.

mae
11-14-2008, 04:57 PM
But I love him dearly :)

razz
11-14-2008, 05:01 PM
is there gonna be an antagonist one then?

Aaron

What do you mean? You are posting in the antagonist thread right now.

I have a feeling Flagg is going to take this one. He isn't my favorite but I still think he's got it. For my part, I'm torn between Nadine Cross and the Overlook Hotel.

Aaron
11-14-2008, 05:08 PM
Is that an official nomination then, Cozener?

smartass :)

question. can we nominate or second if we already have?

cozener
11-14-2008, 05:12 PM
For Flagg? Nope.

Can I nominate Nadine and the Overlook? If I can then these are my nominees. :)

mae

question. can we nominate or second if we already have?

You mean nominate more than one?

cozener
11-14-2008, 05:14 PM
Yeah...its one of those big head/small head things for me.

edit:  You weren't talking to me. Ooops. But I can't pick between the two so I have to nominate both...or neither.

Aaron
11-14-2008, 05:16 PM
I would say that you can second or third more than once, but you should only nominate the one that you feel is the best pick.

jayson
11-14-2008, 05:16 PM
I'll nominate Leland Gaunt of Needful Things.

cozener
11-14-2008, 05:20 PM
I would say that you can second or third more than once, but you should only nominate the one that you feel is the best pick. Oh fine. Be that way. Picky bastard.

jayson
11-14-2008, 05:21 PM
If you pick the hotel I will second it Coz. Otherwise, you're on your own :P

cozener
11-14-2008, 05:29 PM
Well...damn. See...on an intellectual level I want to pick the hotel. I enjoyed the way King made the Overlook seem alive with out hit interracted with Jack and his family and how it slowly took over Jack's mind. Nadine speaks to me on a more primal level but also on an intellectual level. But Nadine was sexy as all get out and I really liked how she slowly fell into darkness. She's also a person and not a building. As fascinating as I find the concept of an evil building I do prefer a humanoid antagonist.

I have to pick Nadine. Its by the most narrow of margins but I have to pick her. I know its kind of obscure and she has no hope of winning but still.

Offhand, I'd say Randall Flagg (unless I can think of someone better).

Not only is he evil and dangerous (hopping across various stories causing his mischief), but he's interesting, and intelligent.

Have you ever noticed how villains make observations about the world that they then go on to tell the heroes, who might be too idealistic to realize it?

Randall Flagg kind of does that for me--and mixing truth with lies REALLY makes one scary and dangerous, and thus a better villain.

jayson
11-14-2008, 08:09 PM
So how is this going to work with Flagg? As far as the poll goes, does he count as a singular entity or should he be judged as an antagonist on a book by book basis? I think he made a better antagonist in some books than he did in others. Either way. On with the show...

Sam
11-14-2008, 08:11 PM
Uh, Flagg had already been nominated, seconded, and thirded.

Uh, Flagg had already been nominated, seconded, and thirded.

Just wanted to get my opinion in....

Sam
11-14-2008, 08:14 PM
I think because the character is so ever present in King's work that we can all easily agree that it is the same character. I would think the nomination for his portrayal in one story would be a nomination for the entire character regardless of how many times he showed up in King's works.

I mean, if you nominate Roland, you're nominating Roland and not Roland from DT2.

jayson
11-14-2008, 08:19 PM
I will have to come up with some kind of composite Flagg to judge him by. I think he's a much more effective antagonist in EOTD or The Stand than he is in some other works.

I'd even say he's a more effective antagonist in the early books of the DT...

In getting Roland to make his sacrifice.

... than he is in the later DT books

In becoming a meal for a spider.

I suppose it will come down to who his competition is in these polls.

The shitweasels were scary shit but were they really antagonists?

Aaron
11-16-2008, 10:15 AM
One could see them that way, I suppose. But I would say the real antagonist of Dreamcatcher was Mr. Gray. Or maybe the slightly psychotic colonel, or whatever that fucker was.

Mr. Gray made me laugh but he was definitely an atagonist. The colonel was scarier to me for some reason but they were both definitely antagonists..
