View Full Version : Best Protagonist--Nominations Closed

Aaron
11-14-2008, 04:37 PM
This thread is for members to nominate characters for the Award for Best Protagonist. In order for a character to be eligible for nomination they must satisfy the definition of a protagonist listed below, and they must be a character from one of Stephen King's published works, including any of his novels, novellas, and short stories. Characters from titles published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman are also eligible.

To nominate a character for this category, simply post your choice in this thread. In order for a character to be placed onto the voting ballot for the Award the nominated character must be seconded and thirded, also in this thread. This is to ensure that we do not have an overly long list of contenders for the Award, and that--by virtue of the nomination process--each character listed on the ballot is guaranteed to have at least something of a following come voting time. Please note that you MUST clearly state in your post that you are seconding or thirding a nomination for it to count. Feel free to deliberate and discuss your choices in this thread.

While you may second or third a nomination more than once, we ask that there be only one new nomination per member.

Protagonist- The leading character, hero, or heroine in a literary work.

OOps... it's Larry Underwood, then - I hope the ones that have been seconded and thirded would count as nominated then, right? Only nominated by the people who seconded them, not the bear

Is there a decision yet on who's the specific protagonist of It? I'd say Bill Denbrough, myself, but it's cool if you're officially going with the idea to use all of the Losers as one.

I will gladly nominate Edgar Freemantle. I feel ashamed for not having thought of it myself. He's one of my favorite characters that King has created. I know he has his flaws but I just absolutely fell in love with him while reading Duma Key.

If he counts, I'll second Ted.

Can he not be both? He is secondary in DT-7, but a protagonist in Hearts in Atlantis. I don't understand why we can't judge characters independently in each of the works they are in. I have the same issue with Flagg, but I didn't want to make a big deal of it.

Brice
11-23-2008, 06:02 AM
I actually agree with Jayson on this. In some stories characters are major and in others they are tertiary.

ladysai
11-23-2008, 06:12 AM
I dont see why Ted Brautigan couldnt be voted upon in two categories.
He played two different roles in two different published works, so both roles should be considered.

I dont mean to make the organization of the threads more confusing,
it just seems to make sense that the character get recognition for having performed in both roles. Some people may think Ted was a lousy main character, but an awesome supporting character.

Aaron
11-23-2008, 07:51 AM
Ted Brautigan shouldn't be technically a protagonist. The reason being that he did not appear throughout the entirety of Hearts in Atlantis, and he was still just a supporting character in Low Men in Yellow Coats, because Bobby Garfield is the character that the story centered around. And if you really take the entire book as a whole, it was about all of these different people and their relationships with Carol Gerber. It is part of the reason that I love the book so much. Because it is the only book I've ever read where the story is never told from the POV of the central character, which is Carol.

That is just my opinion. If you read over the eligibility for a protagonist, I just don't think that Ted meets all of the requirements.

As far as the Loser's Club goes, though, I would say that they all are protagonists except for Stan Uris, since he didn't live (in the present tense) past the first third of the book. He had no direct affect on the outcome. So people could technically nominate any of them except for him.

Brice
11-23-2008, 07:58 AM
I nominate Stan Uris...just cause you said we can't. :nope:
