View Full Version : Round 2 predictions as far as the DT books

mae
11-13-2008, 11:06 AM
The rules being what they are, at most six of the seven Dark Tower novels will progress from Round 1. That has to do with the pesky thing that is chronology, and Bracket #11 contains three DT books. The rules stipulate only two move on to the next round. So one will be left behind.

This is the place then for us to speculate which one: Wolves of the Calla, Song of Susannah, or The Dark Tower. Additionally, it's quite possible the other four DT novels may not progress further. There is a good chance The Gunslinger (Bracket #3) will go on. But there's good competition for The Waste Lands (Bracket #7), and I have trouble seeing The Drawing of the Three (Bracket #5), one of my most favorites of the series, moving on.

I predict SoS will get left in the dust.

Really? My personal feeling, but DT6 was one of the best of the series. I predict it will be DT5. And it looks like, sadly, DT2 as well.

Aaron

I would say that Wolves of the Calla won't make it, just because I know there is a large percentage of people who really disliked it. SoS may make it. I think it was one of the best of the series, but it is another that many have voiced that they didnt dig so much.

yes, DT6 definitely was one of the best - second only to DT5, closely followed by DT2 and 3! http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k291/mishemplushem/Facilitation/bear_tongue.gif

I'd rank the seven books thusly (I am unfinished with DT7 right now):

DT2
DT6
DT7
DT1
DT3
DT5
DT4

Forgot to mention in the first post that Wizard & Glass is in Bracket #8, and it too has a real chance of staying behind in the preliminary round.

I'm not too sure about DT6 making it. I mean, a lot of people have said everywhere on the site that they didn't like and they thought it was a "transition" between DT5 and DT7 so it wasn't that good. It's my favourite in the whole series, so of course I'd like to see it go all the way to the end, but I'm not hoping too much. DT5 may not go either, but that would surprise me a little bit more if it didn't.

I think that ALL of the dark tower books are up against some stiff competition. Each person has their faves among the seven and many disagree, but I believe that several WILL progress beyond round 1. The problem is that, while the story is epic and enthralling, it is broken into seven parts. Thats just too many for it to have much chance against other fully realized stories with a complete beginning and end.

I think DT 2 and at least one of the last three parts will progress. DT 1 has a lot of people who liked it but didn't love it, so does DT 4, DT 5, and DT 6. That leaves 3 and 7 for possible promotion. The Dark Tower Saga is an excellent case of the whole being much stronger than it's individual components. Each book may be just really good or even only ok, but the story is one of the best King wrote.

I even know someone who says The Waste Land is his least favorite... I don't want to point, but his name starts with "Spen-" and ends with "-cer"

So far as 12/08, every DT book that has been in the running has passed through to the next round. The Gunslinger, The Drawing of the Three, and The Waste Lands all three will continue and it looks like Wizrad and Glass looks like it will go through too.

mae
12-08-2008, 01:39 PM
I'm realize this is an unpopular opinion, but I don't like DT4 moving on. The people have spoken, and I'm in a tiny minority, and yeah it does look like Wizard and Glass will be one of two books moving out of that bracket (along with The Green Mile, it seems like), but personally I would've preferred Desperation or Rose Madder to take its place...

John_and_Yoko
12-08-2008, 03:59 PM
I don't like the fact that one might get left behind.... They were all too good for that....

However, if one of the last three must, I would personally think of Volume V, Wolves of the Calla. Other than Volume IV, Wizard and Glass, that was the only volume I had difficulty getting through, and at least the earlier volume struck me as having greatness to it even if I didn't enjoy it more than the previous volume (a first).

My greatest fear for this whole poll is one of the Dark Tower installments winning the whole thing. I just don't believe that any single chapter is strong enough to stand alone as THE best of King. The entire 7 book series, if taken as a single entity, certainly is his most ambitious story, but still is not his best in my opinion. There are subtle differences in voice, tone, and shifts in the characters that cannot be helped. I think the series is a good barometer of King's career, but it's not the best story he's written. IMO.

Completely agree, Sam. I think the two weakest books are DT4 and DT5, in my opinion. Those two should not move onto Round 2, but that's up to our voters. As for me, I believe the best DT book was DT2. It had everything. DT6 and DT7 are close.

Jean

If that's all you got out of W&G, perhaps a re-read is in order. I understood a hell of a lot more about Roland after reading that book than I had before, and more importantly, I think his ka-tet knew a lot more about him after hearing the Mejis story than they had before. Things they needed to know.

Since it's clear that Bracket 11 winner and runner-up will both be either two of DT5, 6, or 7, it looks as though all seven Dark Tower books will progress to the second round, if the third DT book in B11 can displace Nightmares & Dreamscapes and its FAS of 3.970588235 off the wildcards list, which it's very likely to do looking at the voting thus far.

No regret at all. This is a Dark Tower site, that I am the co-founder of, you know. I am glad that the books all made it, and I can say now that all seven definitely have. Song of Susannah should be guaranteed one of the wildcard slots now, based on what I have seen in the current votes in the last bracket.

Where are these brackets? Or is it just based on how we voted on these books? I am not the best at the interface of this forum.

You all might hate me but I was....a little dissapointed in The Stand. I haven't read the book however, I've only seen the movie. After 5+ hours I was dissapointed! but it probably had to do with the special effects and the hand of god. But there were things that I really enjoyed about it, just based off of the movie alone, I would never pick it as the downright winner.

Aaron

The book was MUCH better than the miniseries, I can assure you.

But I tend to agree with you that it is not all that it is hyped to be. IT, which also had a terrible--though shorter--miniseries filmed for it, is my pick for the best of all time. I felt the characters more, and I feel that it tackled so many different social issues that it really is one of the best books ever written.

The brackets were just the groupings of the books for the first round. The top two books from each bracket of five moved on to Round 2, in addition to the 6 highest scoring books that didnt make the top two in their respective brackets, as wildcards.

it's funny because before really getting into SK a couple of years ago, I didn't realize "IT" was SK. and I didn't realize it was going to be more than a scary story (I've only seen covers with the clown on it, ya know), I fully plan on reading that novel and the others eventually (I think Insomnia is next on my list...), but like I was saying, for a long time before I got into the Dark Tower about a year and a half ago, I didn't even realize that SK wasn't just a thriller writer. I watched movies like the Green Mile and Shawshank, and loved them, and hadn't realized they were his. I began reading The Dark Tower because I was a fan of LOST and was told they were similar...

anyways, my point was I think I will enjoy IT, and probably will like The Stand once I read it.

The miniseries of The Stand really fell flat when it came to giving the characters the depth that King gave them. It also didn't get the theme across that it was really an epic battle between good and evil, between God and the Devil. I was disappointed in the miniseries too, but the book is my absolute favorite King novel.

There was plenty of hype around it when it came out in the early nineties. It was a four week event on TV. I think it was four two hour episodes every Sunday night. My gut is saying it aired on ABC, but it might have been CBS. Anyway, though, it was a very big deal back then. I remember watching it with my parents.

Well only three DT novels made it into the Top Ten (well, the Top Five, actually). DT2 at #1, DT3 at #4, and DT7 at #5. The remaining books placed thusly: DT5 at #11, DT4 at #16, DT1 at #19 (hehe), and DT6 at #26.

So, the order according to TDT.com going into Round 3 is:

DT2
DT3
DT7
DT5
DT4
DT1
DT6
