View Full Version : How To: Member Photo Gallery

All of your images can be hosted right here on TheDarkTower.com

The Gallery itself uses a seperate SQL database on our server which allows us a variety of different options in using it. TheDarkTower.com has a vast amount of memory and unlimited bandwidth.

Your photos are of utmost importance to us and the

What follows is a tutorial on how to use the Gallery:

Click on the link to "Gallery (http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/index.php)" in the tool bar.

From here you have two options:

Upload your photo to your very own member Gallery. You have several options on how to do this.

You may simply upload to there--the database will manage your images under your personal gallery.
You can also create albums to subdivide your photos in your personal gallery.
From there, you can copy the image location to copy into any forum (including ours), you may also email the link to others.
Only registered users can see the member galleries
You may also upload your photo to the Special Catgories Gallery if it fits into one of those subjects (to be developed). Special Categories can be viewed by guests.
You may also create a Private Member Album. This will not be viewable to anyone except those people who you give the URL and password to.
This is simply for the more private folks on the site, not for risque pics
**TheDarkTower.com is not responsible for your password, cannot change it nor track who can see your personal album. We cannot be held responsible for who has it or doesn't, that is your total responsibility if you want to use the Private Albums feature**Choose the "upload photo" option on the upper right hand corner of the screen

Please post your questions here--the idea is to make it easier for all of us to share our lives through cool SK and personally related photos.

We can also leave comments for one an other on how much we love the photos.

Choose where you would like the photo to be stored, the title and description, then choose upload. You now have the option to copy its location and use it on forums or elsewhere through the use of the IMG button at the top of this reply box.

I check for new ones out there everyday. :grouphug:

I am so pleased to see some more member galleries out there. Great pics you guys.

couple of things on it

The Keywords Section: is used in conjunction with the database search. They should be relevant to what people would search for
In Patricks collection I made all the keywords the same (Patrick collection). That way anyone searching the words "patrick" or "collection"--would find those pics
Key words should be things that associate the pic for a search
For instance, Karen's baby could be...nerak family babies
That way, any searches for one of those keywords would bring back the pic (no comma's in between words)

The Photo Description: This is the text that shows up under the picture. Please feel free to put in as long of a description as you want. If you are the owner, you are the only one that can edit your pics in your gallery
When uploading the pic, the title is what will show as the name of the picture (anything you like does not have to be file name)
The description will show underneath if someone clicks on the photo
Comments and ratings: These are for the other members and are not required obviously--you guys are welcome to comment and rate the pics basically at will. :couple:

Wow!! I love this thing.

I just had a reason to research the cover of first edition photos and a search of each one in the gallery revealed exactly what I was looking for

Thanks to Jerome for pointing me in the right direction.

So are photos being hosted by dt.com? Isn't that killing your bandwith?

Can we host remotely? I have a boatload of room on my Comcast account. Seems to me I should use it, since I pay for it.

Matt
08-19-2007, 07:02 PM
Actually the site has unlimited bandwith forever.

Before I put the gallery on, hostrocket assured me there would be plenty of space for years to come regardless of growth.

But I am cool with where ever folks host. I'd love member pics in here because they become part of the random image block on the pages

Daghain

How do you delete photos from your account?

Matt
09-13-2007, 11:54 AM
You should have an option under the photo itself that says move/delete.

when you click it, it simply does a little extra screen with a check mark box to delete.

If that doesn't work for you, let me know. :couple:

Darkthoughts
09-13-2007, 12:04 PM

Matt

Matt

If you are using firefox, you should be able to right click the image and choose "copy image location"

In Internet Explorer--you have to right click>go to properties>copy the URL from there.

Why not my own?

Then click Member Galleries.

Then use the alphabetical links to find the correct member. Simple as that, I think.

I've been trying to post pictures other than as thumbnails and have been spectacularly unsuccessful. My images are on Imageshack, and I click on the Get cose for Forums button. I am then presented with two sets of codes, each of which seems to have two different addresses. No matter which of the four options I pick, I continually get a fail to upload the image when I'm in the Advanced mode of our forums here. What am I doing wrong? Here's the first of the two sets of addresses I get from Imageshack:

http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/8388/artofdarknessproofgw2.th.jpg (http://img169.imageshack.us/my.php?image=artofdarknessproofgw2.jpg)

And here's the second:

[img=http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/8388/artofdarknessproofgw2.th.jpg] (http://img169.imageshack.us/my.php?image=artofdarknessproofgw2.jpg)

Edit: Now that I posted this, you'll note that the image shows instead of the first set of addresses, but it has that annoying verbiage at the bottom that is NOT in the image.

What you would want to use is the "direct link" on Imageshack John.

Basically the rawest version of the link you can grab. Then use the "mountain" button in the tool bar to insert it.

http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/8388/artofdarknessproofgw2.jpg

The photo gallery here at the site actually does what imageshack does. It allows you to upload it from your computer to the site so that we can "host" it for you the way imageshack does.

Either one works.

I hope that answers your question.

Interesting. I just uploaded an image to your gallery w/o a problem. Sounds like a Matt issue.

Daghain
07-17-2008, 07:49 AM
It only seems to happen with images I've saved from my digital camera. Anything from the built in camera on the Mac works fine. I'm wondering if the file is too big, maybe?

Hannah
07-17-2008, 08:03 AM

I probably won't have time to get to it until next week. I'm going to be out of town a few days.

Randall Flagg

Not sure what type of file your camera saves a picture as. I know some high end models save the pic as a bitmap, which creates HUGE files. Jpeg images are usually smaller.

Daghain
07-17-2008, 10:38 AM
It's jpeg. That's why I'm stumped. I need to check the settings on the computer and camera, I guess. I can download them to Photobucket with no problem, though.

Okay, I think I must be doing something wrong here. When I click on Gallery, I don't have an upload button. Am I maybe not looking in the right place or something? The instructions sound simple once I find that friggin' button!!

Ahhh...I love those blissful days with no tech problems.

Daghain
08-18-2009, 11:51 AM
Several of us have had that white screen problem. I have no idea what it is. Usually for me it's pictures I've taken with my digital camera - everything else seems to be fine (cell phone, webcam, etc.).

The general consensus seems to be that it may have something to do with the file size.

pixiedark76

Is there any way for the images in my que, I have 28, to be deleted? I think this is the biggest problem. Maybe an administrator?

I'm not even sure what that means Pixie, did you choose the "large file upload" and point it at a hosted album?

pixiedark76
08-18-2009, 01:35 PM
No I don't think I did. I think I have found my major issue. I could manage to upload 2 photos. Everything else has a file size that is too big. :pullhair::arg:

pixiedark76

Matt

I haven't messed around with that bulk upload option too much. One of the things I don't like about the gallery itself is it won't bulk upload from your local computer at all. Not sure why they would put an option for already hosted images. :scared:

Anyway, glad you got it worked out.

I am having the same problem as discussed above. I took pictures with my digital camera and tried to upload a few into an "album" but I just get a white screen. No error message about file size or anything--just a white screen.

Then, I go back to the upload page and it says photos are "in queue." Am I supposed to wait for the queue to clear? How do I know if a photo is too big? How do I make it smaller? I've got several hundred photos of my collection I spent all weekend so far taking. I'd like to start my own collections thread but I can't unless I can get these photos hosted here. I'll be really bummed out if all my work this weekend was all for nothing. :(

Daghain
07-18-2010, 08:45 AM
I think it has something to do with the size of the photo. I know I can put pictures from my 3 megapixel cell phone camera in with no problem, but my 8 megapixel camera absolutely won't work. You could try resizing them and see if that helps.

Randall Flagg
07-19-2010, 05:12 AM

Hi! Quick question to anyone who might be able to offer some help with the gallery. I successfully uploaded my first four pictures, yay! But when I uploaded the 5th and 6th, despite the system giving me a "successful upload" notice, I cannot find them anywhere... Not sure what I am doing wrong. All pics are jpegs reduced in size to 800x600 pxls.

On a different note, how again does one move pics into a separate sub-gallery as talked about on page one of this thread? Those last two attempted pics were non-King books and I was hope to keep them in a separate folder of some kind.

Many thanks in advance for any advice!

I just test uploaded a pic in your Gallery. There are no sub-folders-some Collectors asked for and were given a Collections area to upload pics to.

Yeah, I see the cartoon you uploaded and I just uploaded one fine as well... Hmmmmm... I'm not sure what to say except maybe I was doing something wrong last night. Too tired probably. :) Anyway, thanks for your help! I should have probably waited until this morning and tried again before posting. Ah, well. No worries about the collections area. I can sort everything with the Keywords anyway, once I get many pictures uploaded.

Thanks again!

Ah, I just rann into the problem again and I think I figured it out. I have several versions of the same pics on my hard drive and I think I was accidentally uploading the gigantic 3000x2000 copy instead of the 800x600. Still, it is weird that is gave me a successful message.

Anyway, all figured out. Thanks again!

I tried to link a picture but I think it was disallowed due to my new member pending status.

Have tried to upload a pic four times now - all four times it looks successful, but when I go backl to my member library the new photo is not there - I have uploaded over 250 photos in the past weith no problem. The file in question is either carrie 040508.jpg or carrie040508.jpg.

I've tried both with the blank space and without it.

It might be too large a file. I PM'd you some info. We'll figure it out.

Thanks - uploaded a smaller version without any problems! Its good to know there is some sort of limitation. THe original files I was trying were huge as I was going for high high resolution. I think what I ended up with was fine though!

Just host them yourself on a service like photobucket.

I prefer to just tape them to my monitor.
