We hope to upload pictures of the 2008 Las Vegas gathering in close to "real time".
For now I'll post a beginning picture and then close the thread. We'll reopen it to add pictures as events unfold.

Ok. Dave and I met at a place someone (Berkeley beer head) suggested. Needless to say it was well off the beaten path, the service sucked, and the food was fair.
They did however serve Stone IPA. Additionally, next`door was a comic shop.
What's that Dave has in his hands?

Good morning! David (Wizardsrainbow) and I shared a room. We got up at 4am this morning after not much sleep, cabbed over to the airport together, and each took flights to opposite coasts. I was home by 9:30am today.

What a fabulous trip. These guys all rock. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming, you'd never know that Jerome and his wife are the only two I had ever met in person before. Thanks to them both for hosting Friday night's and Saturday afternoon's festivities.

Meeting Jae Lee and his art dealer, Albert Moy, was an honor. They're both very accommodating, and Jae was great to talk with. Both Dave (Oy-the-brave) and David brought some of their Jae Lee original DT comic artwork to share with us, and Jae brought a portfolio with samplings from various books. It was amazing!

Meeting Jae was a total bonus. Getting to meet and spend time with these fellow members of TDT.com was worth every bit of the trip. This experience was a blast, and I feel truly blessed to know such solid, fun, wonderful people as you all.

It really was. I'm so glad that they happened to choose Vegas as the destination for the first Gathering, since that was the only reason I was lucky enough to be able to attend. Patrick was spot-on with how he described everyone as extremely welcoming and friendly -- I didn't have the benefit of having met anyone who was there beforehand, but there was no awkwardness. It was lovely having met all of these people, and I really look forward to hanging out again, whenever and wherever that may happen.

Thanks to the admins for planning the shindig, thanks to Jerome and LW for booking that perfect room and hosting all the crazies, thanks to Wiz for arranging The Meeting Of The Man, thanks to Jae Lee and Albert for coming (two totally cool dudes, and Albert has excellent taste in beer), and thanks to everyone who attended for being way, way awesome.

I just wanted to thank all those that attended the TDT.com Gathering 2008 for making this past weekend a very memorable moment in my life (and I have been blessed with many good ones!). It was just an incredible experience, one that will hold a dear spot in my heart, and I am so happy to have met and shared khef with all of you. The weekend really moved me. We shared many many stories, laughs, etc. It was so incredibly easy and comfortable to be with all of you.

A very special thanks to Jerome and Delores (and her father Frank) for being such gracious hosts to us for a greater part of the weekend, posting pictures to the site etc. Your efforts were hugely appreciated!

I hope that Jerome and Dags post some of the pictures I know they have. Dags, I want that video you took of the Bellagio water display.

And for all of you who were not there, I will tell you this....DO NOT miss the next gathering.

rub it in.

Hey David, can you explain the circumstances as to how you got Jae and Albert there?

Karen-

Sure, but I was only responsible for Jae. Dave (oy the brave) is close to Albert.

I think most of you know the story of my connection to Jae. If not, here is the background (sorry for those of you who know this already):

More than a year and a half ago, must have been December 2006, about 2 months before the first issue of Marvel's Gunslinger Born issue debuted, Marvel released the Gunslinger Born Sketchbook. I was so taken with the artwork that I decided to see if I could get in contact with the artist Jae Lee. I simply Googled him and found his contact info. I e-mailed him and told him what a big Dark Tower fan I was in addition to being a serious collector. To my surprise, Jae responded to my e-mail and said he worked not far from my office in NYC. We traded a few e-mails back and forth about the artwork for Gunslinger Born and my interest in owning some of the pieces. He said that normally he shunted such requests off to his dealer Albert Moy but because I was close by that he would deal with me personally. He gave me a preview of all of the character sketches he had done for the Sketchbook as well as the pages to issue 1. He gave me first choice of all the artwork and also offered me a deal to purchase all of it. The price was just too steep for the whole thing, but I still bought 6 pieces, 4 character sketches (Roland, Cuthbert, Alain and Eldred Jonas) as well as 2 panels. He delivered them personally to my office and thus the relationship was set in motion.

As the issues of Gunslinger Born were released, I purchased the regular editions and all the variant covers. I approached Jae and asked him if he would be willing to sign all of the issues I had purchased, and he stopped by my office one morning on the way to work and signed 30-40 comics for me. We then continued to trade e-mails periodically. Then earlier this year Jae told me that he was moving to Vegas at the end of April (I think). About a week before he moved, he was gracious enough to do another massive signing for me, all the issues I had acquired since the previous signing. He then moved to Vegas.

When I committed in early July to coming to the Vegas October gathering, I contacted Jae and asked him if he would be willing to stop by to see our group. He said it all depended on his deadlines and work load. Fair enough. Then in mid-September, we traded some additional mails and then a week before the gathering he committed to dropping by even though he had a deadline for issue 3 of Treachery today. I cannot thank him enough for taking the time to visit with us. It was magical and electric...I think others would concur. We were simply giddy with delight.

Dave (oy the brave) has had years of contact with Albert Moy (which I never knew until recently) and Dave heard from Albert that he might join us that weekend in Vegas unless the Mets were in the playoffs. So it turns out he was available and did join us that evening. He was also wonderful and very gracious. Dave can add more to this part of the story if he wishes, but that's the story.

We made it home!!

I love the pictures so far and will echo what others have said. The gathering itself was special on a very deep level. We are katet here at dt.com and something like this really showcases it. Everyone was really delightful...we got hammered and laughed like old friends. Patrick said it right, it wasn't like we had never met, just like we hadn't see each other in a while.

I want to also toss out very special thanks to Jerome and is VERY lovely wife for hosting the thing in their room. That piece was really important, having space and all. Deloris (I hope I am spelling that right) was incredibly sweet. It was great that her and DBF tolerated us.

Also to David--it was great to meet you again and I now consider us old friends. :couple:...I can't tell you how much I appreciate you setting that up with Jae Lee. I'm sure the look on my face the entire time he was there conveyed my overwhelming excitement. :excited:

Dave for bringing Albert Moy--it was so cool to have him there and I think he had a really nice time talking to anyone that wasn't having a geekgasm over Jae (at any given moment).

Jae Lee was totally amazing, what an interesting guy! He showed up and was instantly at home with the party. Asked all kinds of great questions about ourselves and then showed some artwork that blew the doors off everyone present. Even this morning, I think about how he went out of his way to come and see us and was so incredibly cool while he was there...well, it gives me shivers.

I told him that being Dark Tower AND Marvel sent this fan into serious vapors.

This whole thing was really great, I got to meet old friends and new.

Special honorable mention to Sarah (maerlyn) who was not only as cool as I imagined she would be but moreso in ways I could never imagine.

This thing was so much fun! I was sick throughout the whole deal, so the redness under my nose in pictures is from that. I loved hanging out with everyone, and it was amazing how at ease we all were with each other.

Big thanks to David for setting it up with Jae Lee. :couple: Meeting him was seriously rad. Also big thanks to Dave for setting it up with Albert, who was one cool dude. He chilled out and drank some beer and chatted it up with the stragglers while Jae was showing some art.

Also big thanks to Jerome and lovely wife for allowing us to all hang out and drink in his suite. It was a perfect gathering place.

I wish I would have got to spend more time with a few of you, but other than that the weekend was perfect! I have absolutely no pictures because my camera is broken and my phone had no service in Vegas. It was ridiculous. I had to glue myself to Sarah and her phone so I'd know what was going on.

I have to echo what the others said. Everyone was totally awesome and I love you all - we had such a good time!

And I owe Laura a big hug for not letting me walk into a wall on Friday night. :couple:

And, the tat is only a tiny bit sore today - as long as I don't flop into a chair or my clothes don't scrape against it it's all good. And, it was TOTALLY worth it - Dave and I had a blast at the tattoo shop.

Okay, give me a bit and pics will be up! Oh, and Wiz, PM me your email and I'll send that video along. :D

 It may have been Sarah who said, "What happens in Vegas... ends up on the internet."

I know I said it in here yesterday, but you guys were such a blast. The collective sense of humor was awesome.

And Matt is right, I said it to both him and I think David at some point, but for me it really sums up the weekend: From the moment I arrived, the immediate feeling was not that we were all meeting for the first time, but that we were old friends who just hadn't seen each other for a while.

Seriously, meeting Jae and Albert was fantastic and I am so happy we did (more kudos to David and Dave), but our members were the ones who made the trip so wonderfully memorable.

Things We Learned In Vegas
* Ketchup-covered clowns are creepy
* If you're more than 15 minutes late to a meal, you get a sippy-cup full of milk (not whiskey)
* You have to calm down if you're having too much funzies

What else did we learn?

Daghain
10-20-2008, 12:42 PM
That Wiz and Patrick have some weird thing about Spongebob (at least I think that's where that stuffed animal came from).

That Patrick will not put a cigar out until he is finished with it.

That Maerlyn is very snuggly. :D

Patrick
10-20-2008, 12:43 PM
That mini-corn dogs are better in Vegas than they are at home.

Or maybe that was just me.

Too many to post up here but here's the link:

TDT Gathering 2008 (http://www.schwols.com/Photos/v/AnnSellersPhotos/TDT_com2008/)

But, a little photo story:

We were all going to dinner Saturday night and Patrick didn't want to put his cigar out until he finished it. So, we decided that we would order a drink for him - lucky for us we got a waiter with a great sense of humor:

http://www.schwols.com/Photos/d/19684-1/IMG_0864.JPG

So, Patrick has a sippy cup of milk waiting for him. Feev decided it's time to try and get Patrick to join us, so he takes a picture of the cup with his phone and sends it to Patrick:

http://www.schwols.com/Photos/d/19687-1/IMG_0865.JPG

Unfortunately, you can't see it, but it says, "Your drink is waiting."

Patrick finally decides to join us:

http://www.schwols.com/Photos/d/19691-1/IMG_0866.JPG

Bonus! The waiter left crayons AND a placemat to color on!

http://www.schwols.com/Photos/d/19695-1/IMG_0867.JPG

Patrick gets to work:

http://www.schwols.com/Photos/d/19698-1/IMG_0868.JPG

And, like a good little boy, Patrick finished his milk:

There are a ton of pics from Daghain and Oy's trip to the tattoo parlor. I have them as Oy loaded them to my PC, but I think I'll let him post them.

I posted up the ones I have with the ones of the gathering, so if you go to the link in my sig they're at the end. And, there's a short video in the DT Tattoos thread (because you can never have enough pics of your ass on the Internet).

And, it was supercool that Jae showed up. Maybe we should try and send him a thank-you card, somehow. Maybe we could mail it around and sign it or something. :D

I think I can speak for the entire straight male contingent in confirming that that is a true statement.

Jae was going to play poker with me but due to his Monday deadline, he had to back out.

I played roulette for 2 hours Saturday night (the only gaming I did all weekend) and finished in the hole by $80 at the end. I won at Bellagio but gave it back and then some at Mirage.

Too bad you couldn't sit for a hand or two with Jae, that would have been fun.

He lost another $100. Generally he wins enough on his Vegas trips to pay for his hotel room, so I told him the problem was that he *didn't* pay for the hotel this time and that's why he lost.

I prefer tourney's as well. Your cost is fixed and you have more room to be strategic with your chips. The best I've done is 2nd at a 60/15 at Bally's in Atlantic City. It was good fun, about 50 or so people, so I did okay!

I wanted to add my thanks for the fantastic gathering, thanks to Matt and the rest of the crew for the site we all love, thanks to Jerome (and his lovely wife) for the place to get together, thanks to David for convincing Jae Lee to join us, thanks to Daggers for the tattoo idea and her and DBF for making it such a fun experience (and one I can never forget :nope:) and thanks for everyone who made it the great gathering it was.

I don't think David or Patrick mentioned it but we stopped to get a bite after the gathering Friday night (I think at a restaurant in the Monte Carlo but thats a bit fuzzy :scared:) and on the menu was a burger called the Gunslinger, needless to say there was no decision on what to get (and it was very good). Another DT moment was before the show I went to Saturday night I had seen a poster in the gift shop, a S/L, I enjoyed the show so much I decided that if they had #19 I was meant to have it and even though the one displayed was numbered 80 something they did indeed still have #19. Then the guy that got if for me says his lucky # is 19 too and shows me a big 19 tattoo on his forearm. Lastly on the way back at a gas station/gift shop somewhere in Arizona I found this pocket knife:

Your 19 story leads me to a story I didn't tell.

So I went gambling Saturday nite. Made $$ at Bellagio playing roulette then moved on to Mirage (why, when I was on a winning streak, don't know). Playing a $10 minimum table and down to my last $10 that I wanted to spend. I decide to put it all on 1 number (pays 35:1), so I pick 18, cause the date is October 18. What comes up??? 19 ><>< How could I be so stupid?
