I've said it before I'll say it again. that is a great collection Jerome. There are some very nice pieces in your collection.

Also, I'm kinda confused with this thread. Are you guys looking for us collectors to post a similar post of our collection with a max limit of 8 photos?

Jerome is helping me out with testing a new idea for a collectors page. I would love to have a thread dedicated to each collection and I may establish a sub forum for them. :D

You could put as many hosted images in your thread as you like.

The hope was that each collector would have there own individual thread with pictures from their collection.
No limit on the pictures just an 8 picture per post limit.
I.E. If you have 24 pictures you would post the first 8 to start the thread, then post 2 replies in the same thread, adding 8 pics each time.
Hope that makes sense.

Fabulous collection, Jerome! And your display of your collection is wonderful.

I'll start a thread for my wee collection as well.

Geoff, put as few pics per post as you care to, eight is simply the upper limit (per post).

I have also found what is called a "photo gallery" module to use on the site, I think it will slick this up quite a bit.

We could also use it for "about us"

I will keep you guys posted. :D

Experimenting with a couple of new stands. One is very wide and deep, the other is two tiered. The two tier one works for a few books like Six Stories, and its aftermarket case.
Rearranged my book shelves a bit to display recently received books.

Jerome -

I seem to remember you discussing a book shoe (I think thats the term) you had made for your S/L Stand. I can't find those posts now. Would you mind discussing it a bit? I'm looking for a way to display mine without fear of the text block sagging.

Sorry, one other question Jerome. If looking at the book stand from the side, whats is the total length of the unit? (Trying to figure out if your design would be conducive to my shelves or if I'd have to alter it a bit before seeking quotes.

Thanks again!

Randall Flagg
05-26-2009, 05:27 AM
Not sure what you mean by total length (front to back?).

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/510/medium/Stand_Easel_measuremnets.jpg

Edit: I use this model also and it works well:

I managed to find a place locally that can do one of these with the block for about $28.

Sorry, I'm not always clear. I'm trying to figure out if our exact design would fit on my shelves or if I'd need to adjust the 45 degree angle to make it fit. The length I was asking about is indicated in blue below:

http://i41.tinypic.com/racayf.jpg

Randall Flagg
05-26-2009, 01:06 PM
The footprint of the book on the stand is 9" wide x (your blue line) 10.5" deep. Once on the stand, this book needs at least 9.75" of shelf gap height.
Blue line is 10.5". Hope this helps.

Of the few Dark Harvest books I have, the wooden case and actual letter are the only differences.

The lettered editions have a different binding than the numbered editions. That is true of the McCammon and Simmons titles of which I have both editions. What confuses me sometimes is that the lettered editions are sometimes (but not always) issued without dj's.

Randall Flagg
02-18-2010, 02:48 PM
I don't have both the numbered and lettered to compare. For whatever reason. the few titles I have from Dark Harvest are either a lettered, or a numbered. I'll look to see if I have any true side by side comparisons.

Lettered on the left, trades to the right. Dustjackets are identical, but book covers are obviously different. Endpages are different and inlaid signature sheets are present on the lettered.

Do those magnets lose their magnetic-ness if they're not stuck to metal from time to time?

Question

Do magnets ever lose their magnetism?
http://www.physlink.com/Images/graypix.gif
Asked by: Kevin H.

Answer
http://www.physlink.com/Images/graypix.gif
Yes, it is possible for a permanent magnet to lose its magnetism. There are three common ways for this to occur:

1) Via heat: ferromagnet materials will lose their magnetism if heated above a point known as the Curie temperature. At this point, the energy being put into the magnet from the heat will permanently disrupt the magnetic domain structure of the material, turning it into a paramagnetic material [a similar effect occurs in materials called hard ferrites, which exhibit a form of magnetism called ferrimagnetism; the analogous temperature for these materials is known as the Neel point]. You would have to re-magnetize the magnet again, either in a solenoid or with another permanent magnet, in order to restore the magnetism. If you heat a magnet up a little bit, it will lose some of its magnetism, but on returning to room temperature [depending on how high it was heated, and on the shape of the magnet itself], full magnetism can be restored.

2) Via a demagnetizing magnetic field: permanent magnets exhibit a characteristic called coercivity, which is the ability of a material to withstand being demagnetized by an applied magnetic field. Modern permanent magnet materials such as Sm-Co and Nd-Fe-B have high coercivities; older materials such as Alnico or ceramic [hard ferrite] materials have lower coercivities. With a strong enough magnetic field of opposite polarity, it is therefore possible to demagnetize the magnet [whether this comes from another permanent magnet, or a solenoid]. Interestingly, an opposing magnetic field is sometimes applied to a magnet in order to 'knock it down', or to lower its overall magnetic output, so that it can be used appropriately in an application.

3) Via shock: this really only applies to older materials such as magnetic steels and Alnico materials; the mechanism that creates coercivity means that they are susceptible to being demagnetized if enough energy is transmitted through the material via a shock, such as being dropped or hit with a hammer. Modern materials do not suffer this type of problem.

Looking good! I wish I had the room to display books like you have on the top shelves. As John says, moving books is very hard work. Since my books are in order of publication, and every edition of those books are together, if I ever get a proof of CARRIE, I'd have to move EVERY SINGLE one of my King books to fit it in!

Now that I think of it, I just bought THE ILLUSTRATED SALEM'S LOT. I think I'll wait awhile before reading it!

Request - close-ups of the top shelves.

carlosdetweiller

It is truly a beautiful collection and display. I'm like ur2ndbiggestfan in that I shelve/display chronologically rather than alphabetically. Having looked at my collection so much it just seems weird to see someone shelve alphabetically. But that is just personal preference.

Sometimes when I get a new book (say a copy of CARRIE) there is enough space to compress the other copies of CARRIE just enough to squeeze another one in. If not I just lay it on top of the others temporarily. About twice a year I take the books down from the shelves and dust them. I've got a very soft bristle, fairly high quality paint brush that I lightly run along the page edges of each book. Then the shelves themselves get dusted and the books replaced with the newer acquisitions put in their correct place. It's a lot of work but (as I'm sure you all will understand) it is a labor of love and lets me periodically get reacquainted with each book.

Ricky

I was just joking about alphabetical shelving. Personally, I shelve in order of receival.

Great looking book, Jerome! What sort of story is it. I've only read a handful of short stories by McCammon I believe.
From McCammon's website: (http://www.robertmccammon.com/novels/the_wolfs_hour.html)

About The Wolf's Hour
by Robert R. McCammon
I began The Wolf's Hour with the idea that I wanted to do a different kind of werewolf story, coupled with elements of romance and heroism. I wanted my werewolf to be a man who often enjoys being a creature who runs on all fours, with a keen sense of smell and vision. Sometimes, Michael Gallatin would much rather be a wolf than a human being.
I also wanted to do away with some of the conventions of the werewolf tale. I didn't see any need for werewolves to be restricted to the full moon in order to change, nor did it necessarily have to be night. I wanted to create creatures who had struggled to take control of their situation rather than being at the mercy of their circumstances. Which is not to say that a werewolf's life is easy; as one of the characters says, "A werewolf never dies of old age."
As much as possible, I wanted to try to make the development and life of these creatures as believable as possible. Which meant they would learn to endure extreme hardship, because how else could they live but in a wilderness environment? But I think there would be great joy in learning how to see the world as a wolf does, in learning---and it wouldn't be easy---how to run on all fours and use your tail as a rudder, how to hunt prey and kill it with your teeth and claws, and generally survive on a level that is at the same time both brutal and elegant.
The merging of brutality and elegance is what I was trying to accomplish, and I hope it succeeded reasonably well. The Wolf's Hour is set during World War II, and goes back and forth in time to show how Michael Gallatin became a werewolf and also follows his current mission in occupied France as a British secret agent. I've been asked why I chose World War II as my time frame, and not the modern era. My answer is that the period of the second World War appears to be---wrongly or rightly---a very romantic time in the history of the world. Romantic, that is, in the sense that one knew who wore the black hats and who wore the white hats. It was a period of apocalyptic decisions and events, and more surely the pivotal period of the twentieth century. It seemed right for The Wolf's Hour, which is basically the tale of nature versus technology.
I also grew up reading the Ian Fleming James Bond novels, and I wanted to create a character who loved life yet had no qualms about killing if the situation demanded it. Michael Gallatin is not a man who kills for pleasure, but he is certainly a dangerous man because he knows---like the wolf does---that killing is basic to his survival. I also wanted Michael Gallatin to be a compassionate man, in that his work and the nature of killing is not his entire focus for being. He is a professional at his craft, but he's certainly not a machine and I wanted him to have very human emotions.
The Wolf's Hour is a departure for me in that it's not necessarily a horror novel, though its basis is the werewolf tale. Not horror, at least, in the supernatural sense, but the horror in The Wolf's Hour is fashioned by human hands, with a "horror genre" figure as the hero. I wanted to turn around the popular culture idea of a werewolf being a dumb brute who in the light of the full moon is compelled to rend and destroy. In The Wolf's Hour, it's the world beyond the werewolves that is brutish and destructive, while the werewolves themselves kill not for pleasure, but for survival.
I enjoyed researching wolf behavior before I started the book, and I also enjoyed reading a lot of military history and data about the personalities of the era, some of whom make appearances in the book. The Wolf's Hour was fun to write, and I hope in the future to continue Michael Gallatin's story.

by Robert R.

The Wolf's Hour was not one of my McCammon favorites.
I remember it as a very quick read with very little substance.

I felt the same way but it was so long ago that I read it. I reread it about a month ago and liked it quite a bit. Better than I thought. Good page turner and an innovative werewolf story.

Just stunning collection Jerome, really!

For my own curiosity, what's the story behind so many copies of some books? I think I counted 9 "Song of Susannah" there :P Are they all different in some way?

Thanks, and again, just awe inspiring!

If I ever stumble on a copy of Magicats! I will have to buy it. You can't go wrong when a book features an exclamation point in its title. Judging from the back cover, it features many different styles of cats. How could one resist? :excited:

Get this one too as a companion... I have a copy signed by Datlow and 3 of the contributors. Sadly, not Mr. King though.

The first and third are the same. All three are clones-actually IMO improvements on the original. The middle one has a border around it, whereas the original (if there is such a thing) mock-up plate did not. If anyone has one of the original mock-up box and plate, it would be Bob.

Had this around since 2009. I probably posted elsewhere, but here is "McSweeney's Issue #33-'Panorama'". Sized (and weighs) like a classic Sunday newspaper, it featured a foldout spread and an article by Stephen King reporting on the 2009 World series.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/510/P1010184.JPG

I remember the street date well. It had been advertised as $5 the day of publication. It turned out that it was a promotional stunt. McSweeney's hired a couple of bike messengers to sell a handful just outside the entrance/exit to one mass transit station in San Francisco. The rest were sold at full price. I drove to three different places in Berkeley, Ca-42 miles from home, to buy copies. All of the places (despite me reserving 3 copies at one place in advance) instituted a 1 copy limit, then added 9.5% sales tax. I was irritated. The place I reserved 3 at made me drive to their other locations to buy one copy. On the way in to the last stop on my frenetic journey I asked a lady to buy an extra for me. The clerk overheard our conversation and attempted to tell the lady no, but the lady stood her ground, paid in cash and walked outside to give me the bonus copy. She refused remuneration, and asked that I donate $5 to an animal shelter instead-which I at a later point did.
All that was almost a waste as a week later every store I had previously visited had numerous copies available (still at full price + sales tax).
