Hey everyone,

I am trying to track down Bernie Wrightson original works from Cycle of the Werewolf, The Stand, Wolves of Calla, and From a Buick 8. Specifically, I really need to hunt down Werewolf originals. Would anyone out there happen to own any of these works, or know where I can find some?

Thank you!

Hi Jerad, and welcome to our little corner. You are a well liked and respected figure amongst our group of collectors. We are honored that you come to us with your question.

Well, you have Bob's work scanned at this point. Our member oy the brave owns a Wolves of the Calla Wrightson original (the paperback edition cover). My three originals of Wrightson are only pencil drawings which I do not think you are interested in. One is a Wolf sketch from the S/L Cycle of the Werewolf. The other two are from Wolves of the Calla. Pictures follow:

Not exactly originals from his books, but last week some originals concepts that Wrightson made for The Mist were auctioned at ebay.com

I have them in my ebay if you need the links.

Ok, here's my original Wolfie.

This was painted at Palavercon in 2005. Michael Whelan, Phil Hale and Rick Berry did a painting collaboration type thing. And while I was watching Michael uncover the wolf (at least that's what I think he is, kneeling over his prey) I fell in love with it.

Well I was talking to Michael about it and he said that I could have it. Boy, was I over the moon! Well, A snag was hit when I found out that the paintings were supposed to go to Robert to re-coop money from the Con. There was also a stipulation that each of the artists got on and Mic. Well, Mic was ever so generous to pick Wolfie and give it to me, since it was such a big misunderstanding.

There is only two sigs on it, Michael and Phil, Rick never signed it, but there is video evidence that he did work on it.

Someday I am hoping to get the video of them painting it to go along with it.

And that's my story and I am sticking to it!

It's a great story and I love how you've got a single painting that's been worked on by three artists for whom we all feel such an affinity.

Nerak
09-19-2008, 11:46 AM
I think that and the fact that I got to watch it come to life are the two best things about the painting.

And it's ok, wolfie likes being in the dark, Jeremy, and there he shall stay, until I have the money to frame him!

09-19-2008, 12:08 PM

Congratulations, Dave, on the new painting. Bernie was very reluctant to sell his DTV paintings when the book came out because he didn't know when he would get to work with King again. Not many have come on the market. It's a nice one that you got.

Before I go post in the "New Pride & Joy" thread, I want to try to verify that it's not something to be posted in the "New Embarrassment & Shame" thread.

I received a 1st/1st of Cycle of the Werewolf apparently signed by Berni.

I tried to compare the sig to others in the catalog, but he seems to be all over the place so I have no clue.

These are what I tried to use to compare. some seem dead on, some seem like a totally different person signed.

It looks authentic to me. As you say, his signature varies quite a bit from book to book. I also suspect his signature isn't frequently forged as it doesn't add that much value to any particular book. I collect Peter Straub and his signature also varies quite a bit but is infrequently forged for the same reason.

It's good. I have a few from Bernie like that. He's all over the place with his sig, that's for sure.

Just picked up the new issue of Comic Book Creator which has an extensive interview with Berni Wrightson. Berni goes into details on his collaborations with Stephen King on books and films.

I know that he work on the Mist, but didn't know that he also worked on Riding the Bullet and Green Mile.

Edit: Just realized that this is an old interview from 2004, but still very interesting.

I'm a little let down by the hard shell "case" as I thought it would be more of a clamshell type. It's more like a hardcover folder. Overall though I think the quality is excellent - I would put it on par or slightly better than CDs portfolios. The only thing that is better about the older portfolio is the gold stamping on the front - this portfolio is somewhat plain in appearance.

jsweet
01-29-2016, 06:22 AM
I thought the quality was nice. The folder is solid and gives it some nice protection; better than the Carrie portfolio folder from CD, but it should be for the price! I don't have the earlier one to compare it to. Now it can go in the stack of, hmm, what do I do with this now stuff (other art portfolios, Knowing Darkness)

Took me about three hours to remove all the tape wrapped around it :) Yeesh, protecting it is one thing, but I was worried I was going to damage the portfolio getting it unpackaged.

I did damage it getting it unpacked, or rather repacked. The tape caught on the cover and lifted some of it off when I lifted it.

I got number 37.

It also took me quite a while to get it released from all the tape, etc. I, too, was worried about damaging the portfolio. I'm going to come out and say I am not overly impressed with this production. Bernie's inking is very dark and bold both in person (i.e. the originals) and in the prior reproductions (i.e. the earlier portfolio and in the published book). I found these recent ones to be too light, almost washed-out in appearance. Maybe it is just me. I'm glad I didn't pay full price. What do others think?

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/timdoyle/cycle-of-the-werewolf-bernie-wrightson-art-portfol

CYCLE OF THE WEREWOLF
Back in 1983, Bernie Wrightson had an idea- he wanted to work with Stephen King on a werewolf project, that would pair his art with King's writing- which would be packaged as a 12-month calendar. Each month would feature a painting from Bernie and a short vignette from King, matching the monthly transformation of a werewolf. That project quickly changed from the calendar idea into the Illustrated short novel, Cycle of the Werewolf, which later was adapted into the film Silver Bullet.

This Kickstarter project is to fund a high-quality artist edition collection of the full color illustrations from Cycle of the Werewolf as a print set, along with a book collecting the Black and White illustrations and never-before printed concept and process sketches.

THE REWARDS-
We have a selection of rewards for you all- exclusive to this project, and all available for the first time!

-Portfolio Set Pledge $175 and you'll receive this collection of 12 full-color paintings, faithfully reproduced at 11×14 as high-quality Giclées. Printed on 305gsm natural watercolor paper with archival Ultrachrome ink. Includes a signature plate, signed by Bernie and hand-numbered in a limited edition. Packaged in a custom collector's box with foil-stamped cover. Includes the Cycle of the Werewolf sketchbook that features the black and white illustrations from the book, along with never before printed behind the scenes concept and process sketches by Bernie. Limited Edition of 500 worldwide.

-CALENDAR Pledge $20 to receive the Cycle of the Werewolf 2017 Calendar- available AS a calendar as originally conceived for the first time ever!

-T-SHIRT Pledge $20 and you'll get this shirt, exclusive to this project! This brand-new design is screenprinted on a soft ring-spun cotton Tee. Available in Unisex and Women's cut.

-DELUXE WOOD BOX ARTIST EDITION SET Pledge $800 and you'll get this super-lush wood box edition- limited to just 50 sets world-wide.

Here's a look at a test for the etched lid!

This set includes-

-handcrafted fine wood box, featuring a laser-engraved logo and hand-applied blood-red enamel fill on the lid. The interior is hand-done crushed red velvet upholstery and padding.
-the 12 print set, printed on 310gsm Exhibition Watercolor paper EACH ONE signed by Bernie in a hand-numbered edition of 50, plus a signature plate..
-an actual Silver Bullet- stamped with the Wrightson 'W' inset into the red velvet padding. (note- bullet is inert)
-Cycle of the Werewolf sketchbook that includes the black and white illustrations from the book, along with never before printed behind the scenes concept and process sketches by Bernie.

ORIGINAL ART + WOOD BOX
This pledge level gets everything included with the wood box set level, PLUS a piece of hand-drawn original Cycle of the Werewolf art by Bernie. These sketches from 1983 were in his archives, and they can now be yours. We've selected just 5 pieces for this reward, and first person to pledge gets first pick, and so on! We will post photos of all the pieces in a future update. Each piece measures 14×17. ONLY 5 OF THESE REWARDS ARE AVAILABLE

THE SCHEDULE-
The prints are already formatted for printing, the boxes are designed, and all vendors have been contacted, and lined up to get this going! Once this project has funded, we are looking to have the Calendars in hand by early December, and out the door in time for everyone to use them January 1st, 2017! The prints are being produced in-house at Nakatomi, and Bernie will be on hand to do all the signing. If all goes as expected, all pledges should ship by mid-December.

All this project needs is your support!

For what it's worth, I was communicating with Tim Doyle about the Cycle of the Werewolf kickstarter and he mentioned this...

FYI- 50% of all money made on this project goes right to Bernie to help out- he had a 2nd (!!) brain surgery this year, so this is going to help him coast through his recovery period, as he can't really attend conventions for a few months, which is normally his main source of income.

Yup! Can definitely post them here. I was 2nd in line, but cancelled briefly yesterday when I found out I have a tax bill due soon. I have some other expenses coming up as well (e.g., holidays, brother's wedding gift, moving next year, saving up for an engagement ring) so decided to sell some of my collection to raise funds and re-pledged. I'm hoping dropping out for a couple hours didn't lose my spot, but there's a chance I'm 4th in line now.

'Swamp Thing' Co-Creator Announces Retirement Due to Poor Health (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/swamp-thing-bernie-wrightson-retiring-due-poor-health-970242)

Bernie Wrightson, the co-creator of DC Entertainment's Swamp Thing and collaborator with Stephen King on a number of projects, has been forced to retire at age 68 due to poor health.

The announcement was made by Wrightson's wife Liz on Wrightson's Facebook page Monday morning. "Last November Bernie began falling again, and having obvious problems with perception," she wrote. "He had to undergo yet another brain surgery to relieve bleeding, and then spend several weeks undergoing in-patient rehabilitation. Unfortunately, it appears that he has lasting damage: he has extremely limited function on his left side, and is unable to walk or reliably use his left hand, among other limitations."

The statement continues by declaring the artist "effectively retired: he will produce no new art, and he is unable to attend conventions," although it continues, "Should this situation change I will happily announce it here."

At least he is not suffering any more. I missed getting to meet him and from everything I've heard and read, he was a great guy.

Last year, I was able to get George Romero to sign my copy of Creepshow. I had already gotten Tom Savini and Tom Atkins to sign in years past. Romero didn't seem like he was in the best of moods (this was the third day of signings he had been through). He saw one of the other sigs (both in sharpie) and thought it was Bernie's sig. His face lit up like a Christmas tree when he looked at the sig and mistakenly thought it was Bernie's. He said something like "ooo!! Signed By Bernie Wrightson??" I think that was the one genuine smile I saw from him that day. Not much of a Bernie story but the only one I have.

R.I.P.

Man that's some pretty rough news. Bernie's always been a favourite artist if mine, King related or not. RIP Bernie you will be sorely missed.

So sad to hear. I was lucky enough to meet Bernie last summer at Boston Comic Con - I was able to get a number of King related prelims. He was gracious and kind. A great memory.

Very sad indeed. I feel very lucky to own one of the framed DT 5 prelims by Bernie.

I've looked at the prelim three times today as well as pulled out my Creepshow and slowly went through it. An incredible talented artist.

I pulled mine out today as well. I went through them with my daughters. both of whom were with me at Boston Comic Con. So happy I was able to get something to remember him by.

I just saw the news. Damn, I'm sad, but also thankful that he is no longer suffering. I never got to meet him. I returned to my apartment one night a few years ago and was flipping through various local news to see that he was a guest at one of the Cons, but it had ended mere moments before me seeing the news....and that the convention center he was at was only a mile from my apartment. "Regrets.... I've had a few...." I hope that wherever he is, if there is indeed someplace, he has all the canvas and paint that he can use!

I just read an article on his life. I did not realize all the work he had done and the mediums he had touched with his visions. Like the Mist for instance... I didn't know he did the concept work on that. Or Ghostbusters... he really was an amazing artist. A REAL loss...

Very sad, one of the best. One of my favorite all time is the Frankenstein edition with his art and King's intro.

Very sad to hear about his death but at least he's not suffering anymore. Last year was really complicated for him and his wife Liz.

Ten years ago I dealt with a local convention to invite him. I got green light from both parties but Bernie needed the schedule in January (Con was in August) and the organizers didn't provide it. I tried again on the next year and the same scenario happened, so I gave up. But I kept in touch with him and Liz and arranged a phone interview for the magazine I worked on. I got the chance of talking with him for 10-15 minutes and it's a moment I never forgot. Very down-to-earth and kind. I'll miss him. :(

I got the original art tier of the Cycle of the Werewolf kickstarter and have been asked to select a piece. Any recommendations? I'm leaning toward the third one right now.

3 and 4 are my top two choices. Might have to go with 4 :) Thanks for the opinions!

These images were less than $200 just 2 years ago at a Comic Con. I have (I think) I still have pictures of the books where it was shown. I tired like hell to buy them all... no luck. A member here did get a bunch of them though.

3!
It's definitly a preliminary piece as it seems on pencil. I dont like the fact that the 4th seems to be with a proper pen, and could "easily" be "photocopied".

The only downside is that the pencil will be a fragile piece and may fade away?, so you should defo frame it but I am sure that you were already planning to do that
