If you've been reading Maerlyn's spotlight thread (...and if you haven't, WHY NOT?!! ) there's been mention of a few members possibly having a London get together - September/October 2010.

It's all 2 years away and leaves much to be confirmed, but considering the cost to anyone over the pond or indeed in Europe, it might be a good incentive to save if we start discussing it now :nana:

I"m completely down for a London Gathering - I'll stock up on plenty of Arsenal memoribilia, and we'll hit as many pubs as we possibly can with the time that we have to work with! :D

Count me in :) London never was so close! And if there's anyone living there right now, I'm coming by mid October so just let me know!

razz
09-02-2008, 09:46 AM
about how much do you think that would cost? Plane from Michigan to London, plus room, and other expenses.

Darkthoughts
09-02-2008, 09:50 AM
Razz - Not sure, I was looking to come to Vegas for this years gathering and the flight was going to cost about £600, which is roughly $1200. If you goto an airline website they normally have a page where you can input a destination and get a rough quote.

Accomodation wouldn't be too bad. You could stay in a travel lodge from around £30-£40 a night...or cheaper depending on where you wanted to stay.

Stone - let me know when you're about this October - I'm going to London at halloween for a Neil gaiman signing

Letti - *dies*

razz
09-02-2008, 09:52 AM
yup. about 600 bucks, plus fees and taxes.

Darkthoughts

I shall not! :D You are fair lady, and when we get to london I'll buy you a pint to prove it :rose:

09-02-2008, 10:57 AM
razz, how old are you exactly? I ask this because they made some restrictions on theage of people coming to stay in a hostel in London. Anyway, if you make a reservation early enough on hostelworld.com, you should be able to stay in London cheaply. September is not even good for tourism, so this is really convenient. Check the hostels out of town in case the other ones are too expensive. The tube can be inexpensive too!
To anyone else who is between 18 and 30, this applies to you as well, so check the hostels a month before and it should be ok!

You can tentatively count me in for this one. I've been wanting to go to England for awhile now. :)

Try to play some music in the street! One of my friend went on an exchange for a year in New York and she had a friend who started singing right in the middle of the street and in like 5 minutes the guy earned $5 (he got a coffee thanks to it). Maybe if you try and get your plane ticket real soon, you can get a nice discount too...

I am pretty certain , that we wouldnt make the cut in that club. But getting a passport typically only requires some time and a bit of money. You just fill in a form and take your photo. Then you give them the money...done! No sweat.

Jean
09-10-2008, 03:31 AM
Even here getting a passport is easy. It's the visa that presents a problem...

alinda
09-10-2008, 03:44 AM
 right again Jean. In the US tho' tourism to the UK is usually not a problem at all. Unless you have a police record for terrorism or something I believe the UK would be a breeze. " I am going to London to buy stuff" ....oh ok, be sure to get expensive stuff, so we get a lot of tax ok?

Isn't it a hoot now when you enter a room sober, and watch drunken people and know that you too once behaved like that? Cracks me up. Another plus is I remember stuff the next day, and my sister will say, what happened last night? I could tell her anything but I don't . I've learned that it is possible to have just one. damn I was such a lush back in my youth.

Anyhoo, If I can manage this trip I'll be so high on meeting you all I may never come down!! :couple:

We may be eurocentric, but still, making the whole of the US part of the EU would be quite tricky, although there are new members all the time and a lot more countries to remember when in school. I'm glad there were only 15 when I was in high-school :) Maybe if you get tired of being on your own on the other side of the ocean, you can join though. It's all a lot of fun and no need for a passport (I only need to show my ID card anywhere in the EU, which is really great cause the picture on my passport doesn't look too great!)

I wouldn't worry about it. I've only been to D.C. twice in my life, and the most memorable part of those trips was the ride on Scamtrak. I doubt five percent of the people moved any more than thirty miles beyond their homes before the Industrial Revolution.

I just saw the pics in this year's gathering thread and I got pretty excited... I'm so curious to see what you all look like in real life! Anyway, it'd be best if we could meet in the summer because I don't know yet where I'll be since I'm planning on going erasmus (going to a foreign country as a student) in case I can't enter the school I want to attend so I may be in South Korea in that case.

I am sorry to say but given the difficult times-and particularly the weak excahnge rate, I don't think a London trip is in the works for me.

Harrald
10-24-2008, 02:32 PM
The exchange rate from dollar to pound is great right now (If you're a Yank). In fact it's at a 5 year high. About $1.62 per pound. It was $2 a pound a short few months ago.

I know it's better than when we went. The problem is food is already twice as expensive as in New York. It's not a cheap trip. But it's not as expensive as it was.

Randall Flagg

I don't mean to throw water on the fire, but the large majority of members here are U.S. based. It's difficult enough to meet here in the states. That being said, any gathering comprising 2 or more members-anywhere in the world counts. I just find it hard to imagine 10-15 members meeting in the UK at any given time (as a matter of fact I wonder if 10-15 members from the Uk could all agree to meet at any given time-short of a SK signing:P).

Rjeso
10-24-2008, 03:44 PM
Maybe some lucky punk would be able to afford to make a crossover once or twice, but I also bet that things will be more along the lines of the US and then maybe Europe having separate Gatherings each year.

I'm definitely trying to work it into my budget. I haven't been overseas since '03, so I'm due for an international vacation.

I'm going to try and couple it with some sort of cycling trip or something, so I can spend a couple weeks there. I'm guessing a cash outlay of around $2000-$3000 if I do that.

Darkthoughts
10-25-2008, 11:58 AM

So, we don't know dates for sure?

Because, what I'm thinking is, this is kind of perfect.
Especially if it's the summer or fall.
Because I will have just graduated, and I was planning on traveling for a bit before starting up a grad program...
And I would so love to go back to London! And meet everybody who can make it of course!

I really wonder if I can work it into my budget...

Well, if it ends up being late October it'd mean me either missing it or quitting my job. Luckily I hate the fuckers and would just consider it a good enough excuse to tell them to go fuck themselves. LOL

Am I THAT irresponsible? That thickheaded?

I don't mean to throw water on the fire, but the large majority of members here are U.S. based. It's difficult enough to meet here in the states. That being said, any gathering comprising 2 or more members-anywhere in the world counts. I just find it hard to imagine 10-15 members meeting in the UK at any given time (as a matter of fact I wonder if 10-15 members from the Uk could all agree to meet at any given time-short of a SK signing:P).

Of course there are more US based members but I think we can manage to have 15 people meeting in the UK if we get it prepared seriously and the problem with always meeting in the US is I can't afford it so I won't ever be able to meet any of you guys :(
If any gathering of at least 2 counts, then we've made a Europe gathering consisting of Letti, Susan and me last summer ^^ I'm glad we could make it :)

I feel like it's a great thing if folks can come together and I like the idea of these long term planning sessions, they seem to yield more actual participants.

Me and Dora have always wanted to visit Europe, meeting some of you would be the absolute best way to do it, we get 4 weeks of vaca at the jobs we've had forever every year. Kids are getting cheaper and cheaper...I can't see us not going if something gets put together.

Since I am probably only going over once, I would LOVE to have people like Jean and Letti involved if at all possible.

Flying pretty much anywhere in Europe is going to be the same for us. Paris or London anyway.

So I say it needs to happen, folks need to save if they can, come if they can. These things are once in a lifetime opportunities and I always feel like a better person for having the chance to do them.

Ah, a fellow scouser. :)

This is an awesome idea - considering I'm from Liverpool, it make it relatively easy for me to get to London. (About £20 worth of coach fares, 5 hours each way, and I'm sorted!)
It'd be really cool to meet up with people from the forum - although I haven't exactly been a long-term member, I'm always up for meeting new people - especially when interests are shared. :D
It'd be nice to catch a glimpse of a few of you guys. For the cheap and cheerful option, there's a hostel in Soho called The Piccadilly Backpackers - £14 for 4 nights, I discovered when I went for a 4-night gig.
There's also a little place called the Easyhotel...you actually get your own bathroom in there, unlike the sweaty hostel showers. :P
(I'm merely making suggestions such as these due to the fact that I'm a peasant! I don't know any more upper class places, to be frank!)
I can't wait to see how this whole thing progresses. :)

Thanks to Pam for informing me of this, also. :couple:

Ditto that, Alisha. Gotta say it would be great meeting all you guys! Would be especially cool to hear what we all really sound like! I'd expect there would probably be more different accents at the gathering than a conference between the United Nations. And that would just be the British accents!

Well, if you can't make it to the gathering, make it whenever you can, and I'm sure us UK dwellers will glady (very gladly, in fact) have a mini meet up.
At least then I can at last meet you in person! :huglove:

And I'd join, just to see Brice dear! <3

It'd be September for me, as October tends to be a busy month in the deaf community here (the youth days and whatnot), but if you decide for October, I'm coming anyway! You can't stop me!

Yep, someone should start to work on the details. The sooner we find out the place and the date the more people will able to come. I think.

I think the original plan was to find out when Sarah (maerlyn) was going to England and decide based on that since it was originally based on her idea.

In this case someone should catch her.

I think Sarah's trip is off. So, maybe we ought to take a re-vote on the best month for everyone that can definately make it?

I think we should pop another question in the poll.

Can you come to the UK Gathering 2010? (Around the end of the year, no exact date)
Yes, definitely.
Yes, probably.
No, I don't think so but I will try...
No, no way.

I think we would need this. And the names should be visible. Just to see how many people are really interested in / can come at all.
Just my two cents.
What do you think?

Brice

I want to come; of course it is too early to answer this certainly. But I think I can come...

The sooner I know the date the more chance I have to be able to organise it. (I guess it's the same for all of us.)

Brice

Actually I am depending on whatever date y'all decide and a couple other factors, but I hopehopehope to be able to do it. If I can't when y'all do this though nevemind that. Europe can't keep me away for long.

Honestly I don't think I'll know until March or April for sure...which is why I'm basing my decision in part on the decision of everyone else. I will say November and December are completely impossible for me and that the furthur we get into October the more difficult it becomes.

Guys, would it be bad if one of us started a new thread with the new poll with a little bit different title? This one could get closed or I don't know..
For example: UK Gathering 2010 in progress! Can you come?!?!
Someone should really get the controll of this thing or it will fade. I wouldn't like to be too pushy, though.

Darkthoughts
11-02-2009, 03:21 AM
No, I think that's a great idea Letti.

It sounds like September/early October is a good bet so far. Accomodation shouldn't be too bad that time of year, you can get Travelodge rooms from £19 a room per night, the family rooms are £25 per night and sleep 4, so sharing would be even cheaper. I stayed in one last week and it was really nice - bed linen, towels, tea and coffee all provided, a tv, bath, shower, sink and toilet in each room.

ETA: Just checked the prices for inner London, which start from about £50 per night...so sharing would be the way to go!

Brice
11-02-2009, 03:28 AM
I'm assuming there are places that have weekly rates too, right?

Darkthoughts
11-02-2009, 03:43 AM
I expect so, Travelodge do discounts on multinight stays, check this out for a rough guide to prices per night (then you can click on links for mulit stay info):

Okay, I think I will start the thread (if everyone agrees) and I will try to keep the first post as updated as possible. But maybe Lisa should. I dunno. Lisa?

Lisa: Let's try to collect as much information as we can. The more infromation we can give about everything (price, date, location) the more people can start to think about it I think.
