Hello! Do you like The Office?

NBC, those clever rats, have developed a Dunder Mifflin Infinity website to coincide with the Office's last episode.

It's amazing. You can apply for one of many branches of Dunder Mifflin around the country, get paid in Schrute Bucks so you can buy more stuff for your desk, get involved in contests, and try and make your branch #1.

I just signed up for it and am part of the Dunder Mifflin: New Britain Branch

If you like the Office, you'll love this. :D

Dunder Mifflin Infinity (http://www.dundermifflininfinity.com)

Check it out.

I love Dwight!

Mike Beck

He's the best. I love the Dwight/Andy dynamic too. They're awesome together. Dwight can't stand him, but part of him has some respect.

Angela is another close favorite of mine.

Creed!

I put him as my favorite character on the DunderMifflin site. He's out of his mind, and it's terrific that he always forgets Meredith.

what about when Jim makes Dwight think that he's a vampire. Dwight goes to Creed for help.

Dwight: Extraordinary events call for extraordinary actions.
Dwight: We form an allegiance …
Creed: Sure.
Dwight: … to use sudden violence.
Creed: Okay.
Dwight: Do you have the tools to turn a wooden mop handle into a stake?
Creed: (without hesitation) What size?

He is pretty damn cool! I've seen some of his stand up stuff and thats awesome. Yeah, the British Office is brilliant...I can't compare because I haven't seen the US one, but David Brent is amusing in that tragic "I know someone just like you!" way.

Id say the english one probably deserves the crown as its the original idea, but to be honest both shows are just as good as eachother .. the US one has its own flavour, and is probably a little more "energetic" whereas the british one is more sardonic and dry - both have got the right tone, though, and they did a very good job making sure the US one didnt suck.

Gareth from the british one (Dwight is kinda like his "twinner", but theyre totally different characters) is fucking hilarious. He redefines the word inappropriate :) whereas dwight is more obsessed-nerd weird.

I love the US episode where Michael burns his foot when he is cooking bacon on his george forman grill in bed and Dwight rushes to his rescue. You see him screaming out of the carpark and then smashes his car (quite seriously) into a pole, staggers out, vomits everywhere, staggers back into the car and keeps going. Classic :P

Yeah I know. And I don't know how I feel about Toby leaving, because the whole Michael/Toby relationship always cracked me up. I loved the episode where Michael wanted to have the boy scout troop at the casino party and Toby said it wasn't a good idea.

Michael: "Why are you the way that you are? Every time I try to make something fun, you have to go, and...make it...not that way.I hate so much about the things you choose to be."

Oh, there's so many awesome moments on this show...

Andy: What if we changed our outgoing answering machine message so it just has a little more zing and a little more pep.
Michael: Zing and pep. See that's- those are the kind of words we're looking for. Yes Jim.
Jim: What about if we did an even newer voicemail message that had even more zing and pep.

Stanley: It's like I used to tell my wife. I do not apologize unless I think I'm wrong. And if you don't like it you can leave. And I say the same thing to my current wife and I'll say it to my next one too.

The sad thing was, it was a theater concessions job, so there wasn't much opportunity to jello him. On the bright side, I did do things like pilfer his customers, salt his feet (he had a habit of taking off his shoes and leaving them at his register), and other fun things.

I'm wondering something. They were having trouble losing weight and Angela made the comment that her doctor wanted her to 'gain weight'......Maybe she's pregnant? :orely:

Ricky
09-27-2008, 07:42 AM
Actually, Anglea Kinsey (actress who plays Angela) was pregnant during the last season. Of course she's had her baby by then. If they were going to have her pregnant on the show (with Dwight's baby!)) I think they might have done it already. Of course, you never know.

B Rag
09-27-2008, 12:54 PM
The idea of her being pregnant actually did cross my mind when they weren't losing weight, but I didn't think of it when she said she was supposed to gain weight. I just figured that had to do with her being such a small person.

Great episode, anyway!

Thought i'd give this thread a mega-BUMP and bring it back from the dead. I do this because I've just heard something pretty big, and I'm not sure whether I like it or not.

Apparently, Ricky Gervais has confirmed that he is seriously considering playing David Brent once again, but this time, in the US Office. Now, I must admit that Brent vs Scott does have some sort of perverse appeal in seeing who would make us cringe the most, and I do like the US Office, but...

The original is a very, very different show compared to what the US version is now. It knew exactly what is was, and always aimed for total realism by pretending to be just another british docusoap, which were all the rage back in the late 90s and early 00s. It was so realistic that by the end, the characters knew their programme had been watched by thousands of viewers, and while some were embarrased by that, Brent tried to exploit that as much as possible, embarrasing himself further in the process. From beginning to end, it was a true mockumentary, as great as This Is Spinal Tap.

The US version, on the other hand...I like it, I found the first 3 seasons funny, but it's a lot more of a sitcom by this point, with the characters talking in front of the camera from time to time. Both shows are great in their own right, but I have just a little bit more respect for the original for it's realism. Now, I find it hard to watch the US version without thinking, "So, after all these years, is this still supposed to be a documentary that no one watches? Surely the characters should be recognised in public by now!"

I will watch the David Brent ep if it does happen (one way or another: i don't expect it to be on tv the day after the US, since we still haven't got season 4 over here yet!), but only if it's written by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. That's it, no one else. If someone else writes it, I just won't bother. Which sounds rather stubborn, but Merchant and Gervais have written everything Brent's been in so far, I don't see why they should stop now!

As a big, big fan of the UK original, I'm not sure how thrilled I am about this. How can they not "tone down" David Brent for the US audiences?

Odetta
02-02-2010, 09:59 AM
Ricky is great! I would love to see him in the US version, but you guys are correct, they would have to tone down his character and thus, he would lose what I love so much about the character.

I still think it's funny, not as funny, but the buy out and the fact that the scranton branch was the only branch making money made me laugh. And David being a bumb now was funny. However, I think this is the reason why the UK version is much appreciated because they ended before they had to start thinking of more and more ridiculous plots.

DoctorDodge
02-09-2010, 01:14 PM
Oh, they haven't made any UK eps since 2003. They only made 2 series and a 2 part xmas special. That's a total of 14 episodes. Short, I know, but as Mordred pointed out, it ended before it got too ridiculous. Apparently, the BBC really wanted more eps, but writers Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant just said, "Nah, why ruin a good thing? Story's finished, just move on."

Although the US version did pretty well with its first 3 seasons, but from what I've heard, it started losing its subtlety and realism in season 4. Tbh, i'm not interested in watching more eps after season 3. It had the perfect ending with the Jim and Pam story being resolved. Is it anywhere near as interesting afterwards?

Okay, that's what I thought. I have all those episodes, and my buddy never said there were more so I was pretty sure it had ended already. But yes, being a watcher of both, I would say that the US version was really funny, it started loosing my attention during the last season. But, I'll probably keep watching it until it is no longer on the air or until they move it to an off night. I gota get my Pam fix.

Watched exactly one episode of the original version of The Office and wasn't that impressed. Loved the American adaptation until this season, which is when I think the series completely went off the rails.

On the one hand, I can appreciate the the plot-line of the company going under in the midst of a global recession dovetailing with the actual show going under-it's very meta-on the other hand, it's kind of painful to watch the thread unraveling over the course of an entire season.

The Office (U.S.) was a great series. Even so, I don't think it was as good as The Newsroom-you people in Canada know what I'm talkin' 'bout.

My advise?

Watch another ep. Best one's episode 4 of series one, but only just. There's other classic episodes, in fact pretty much all of them have hysterical moments in. It's not the funniest tv show ever made (that of course goes to Spaced), but I prefer it to the US just because it gets the mockumentary aspect of the show. Is there any reason why in the US version the camera only exists in some funny moments and never in the dramatic ones?

I like what I've seen of the US version, but it's definitely not the funniest programme in the US atm. That goes to 30 Rock, of course!

Huge time suck alert... The Office Quotes (theofficequotes.com)

So far, my favorites :

Jim Halpert: Question. What kind of bear is best?
Dwight Schrute: That's a ridiculous question.
Jim Halpert: False. Black bear.
Dwight Schrute: That's debatable. There are basically two schools of thought--
Jim Halpert: Fact. Bears eat beets. Bears. Beets. Battlestar Galactica.
Dwight Schrute: Bears do not... What is going on?! What are you doing?!

Jim Halpert: By any chance did you see Battlestar Gallactica?
Andy: No I did not. Was that any good?
Jim Halpert: Actually not. It was really so-so. [holds up stopwatch to Dwight] I mean I like all the crazy monsters and stuff, you know like Klingons and Wookies and all that but-- Sorry was, there something you wanted to add Dwight?
Andy: Is that anything like the original Battlestar Galactica.
Jim Halpert: You what's weird? It's practically a shot for shot remake.
Andy: Really? Huh. Cool.
Jim Halpert: The story's kind of bland. It's about this guy named Dumbledore Calrizzian and he has to return the ring back to Mordor.
Andy: [pause] That doesn't sound right...

Ok pam, you know I have to post Original Office quotes to balance it out (and to show that the original has some of the best quotes ever, if you stick with it):

[During a team building exercise, which involves solving a puzzle of how a farmer can get a bag of grain, a chicken and a fox across a river:]
Gareth: How big is this chicken if its as big as a bag of grain?
Tim: I dunno. Big chicken.
Gareth: Yeah, but how big?
Tim: Big, it's a superchicken.

Gareth: He could put the grain on the wall!
Tim: There's not a wall!
Gareth: What, it's just nothing? It's just a farm and a river? He could get his wife to help.
Tim: He ain't got a wife.
Gareth: All farmers have wives.
Tim: Not this one, he's gay.
Gareth: Well, then he shouldn't be allowed near animals, should he?

[On whose job title is better:]
Tim: My job title actually means something, Gareth! Team leader don't mean anything, mate!
Gareth: Excuse me, it means I'm the leader of the team!
Tim: No it doesn't, it's a title someone's given you to get you to do something that they don't want to do for free! It's like making the div kid at school milk monitor! No one respects it!
Gareth: Er, yes they do!
Tim: No they don't!
Gareth: Yes they do! Because if anyone was rude to me, then I used to give them their milk last. So it was warm!

Honestly, i find the US Office really funny to watch (bear in mind we're only on season 4 in the UK though). I think what it really comes down to is this: original is the better mockumentary, remake is the better sitcom. I just felt like reminding everyone on this board why the original was so great in the first place!

turtlex

I'm not surprised, pam: like me, you've never made it a secret on this board of which version you prefer. Also got both series and the specials, and I still find it hilarious each time. It really is 14 episodes of perfection, isn't it? I think my favourite moment ends with the line, "Erm, she said no, by the way." Breaks my heart every time i watch it!

Mike Beck
04-28-2010, 05:50 PM
oh no. are we having a which is better situation?

hmm. This may sound like a cop-out, but i like both versions for different reasons. I can watch either one over and over again and still find them hilarious.

But i think you hit it on the head, Doctor. English version = better mockumentary, U.S. version = better sitcom. I love David Brent and i love Michael Scott. I love Gareth, and I love Dwight.

It's really a win-win situation, because both shows are excellent. I'm sure i lean more towards the U.S. version right now, because there are new episodes to anticipate, and it's fresher in my mind, at any given time.

Now, here's what i want to know: Who are the mysterious people on this board who are keeping their preferences a secret? You cannot hide your true feelings from us! :P

No, i'm not starting a "which is better" argument (at least not intentionally), i know a lot of people prefer the US version, i'm just making sure that the UK one gets some love, too. I'm liking the US office atm, but I'll be honest: i'm a little skeptical that it can get any better than it is now. Isn't it currently on season 6 in the US? Have they answered the greatest mystery that this show has kept secret: namely who the documentary people are?!? Six seasons and the characters aren't recognised publicly?!? I smell cover-up!

(I'll be sure to post an incredibly over the top theory on this sometime soon, just like i did for Secret Diary of a Call Girl! :wtf:)

This is a very good, accurate, appraisal and I plan to steal it from you, DD -- "original is the better mockumentary, remake is the better sitcom". :D

That said - no one makes me cringe like David Brent. Sincerely. He's awesome, in a gee-how-can-he-be-so-clueless kind of way.

Sorry, just taking the piss! I recommend it (obviously) if only for the reason that it's never going to end. And no, that's not an exaggeration.

Ok, so with Steve going, anyone got any theories on how Michael Scott will leave Dunder Mifflin? Here's my personal theory: Michael Scott finds out he's dying of an ultra rare disease that NBC makes up. He starts taking pills to help him get through the more painful symptons, but these pills also have a strange side effect: he gets smarter, more questioning of the world around him. He begins to realise that the reason he's in an office full of idiots is no coincidence, but more important than that, he realises he's being filmed by a documentary crew, and yet he's never seen himself on tv!

Testing the food and the water in the office, he realises that everyone, over a slow period of time, have been drugged and brainwashed into mindless morons...except, of course, Jim and Pam. It turns out their whole romance was faked, and that they've actually been working undercover for corporate to keep an eye on the "subjects" (which is found out during a scene where Michael tortures Jim), and the reason Michael has gotten smarter is that the drugs he's been taking for his illness are cancelling out the effects of the brainwashing drugs. More importantly, Michael finally finds out who he's been working for: Dunder Mifflin isn't a paper company after all...but a highly secret organisation that has been working on taking over the world for quite some time, and it has been experimenting with methods of brainwashing to achieve this. To observe the effects of the brainwashing on the subjects, they've even set a up a "documentary crew", which is viewed by the controllers of Dunder Mifflin to observe and record the effects of the drugs.

With Jim and Pam's help, he infiltrates corporate in New York, and finds out that this operation is already worldwide, first in the UK (in a totally blatant and not very subtle homage to the original by the writers), but more importantly, he finds out who's controlling the entire operation...Ryan Howard. From the very beginning, he was keeping a close eye on Michael, to see if he would ever break the effects of his conditioning. For in an even bigger twist, it's revealed that Michael himself was the original head of the whole operation, before he had a change of heart and was going to reveal to the whole world what Dunder Mifflin were up to. However, he was betrayed by Ryan and captured, tortured, and became the first subject of the brainwashing.

At this point, Michael tries to shoot Ryan, but Ryan escapes with Jim and Pam in a helicopter. Michael shoots his way out of corporate with guns (lots of guns), gets chased by the police, and phones his archnemesis, Toby Flenderson, and tells him everything he's found out. At first Toby doesn't believe Michael's story, until Michael promises to email all the files he's gotten from corporate, as well as any he can from Scranton.

Sneaking into the office in the middle of the night, Michael logs onto his computer, emails his information to Toby, when the telephone rings. Picking it up, Michael says, "Yes?" before hearing Ryan's voice on the phone say, "Goodbye, Michael."

Then we see the office blow up, clearly intending to be the biggest. cliffhanger. ever! Will Toby be able to stop Dunder Mifflin? Is Michael really dead? And what will happen to the other main characters? All this, and more...
Never gets revealed, as NBC cancels the office due to low ratings.

So, that's my theory done! Bear in mind, I'm only on Season 4, so I might have gotten a few things wrong with that theory, but it's clearly heading in that direction. Anyone got any other ideas?

Ricky

Oh my God...that is awesome.

If The Office was more serious than that, it may be plausible, but Michael wouldn't have gotten sick anyway, because Dwight would have developed a 100% curing vaccine with beets and bat poison.

DoctorDodge
05-01-2010, 06:29 AM
He would've developed a vaccine, yes...but only when Michael had a cold: ironically, it's Dwight's "vaccine" that would give Michael the disease in the first place!

Ricky
05-01-2010, 06:41 AM
No, I don't think so. Personally, I believe it was Toby who got Michael sick in revenge for trying to plant the "pot" in his desk. He brought back some toxic exotic plants from his trip to Costa Rica and developed some weir mixture. So with that said, Dwight's beet vaccine did work.

Well, it's been confirmed :

Steve Carell has confirmed that he is leaving NBC's "The Office" after next season.

"I just think it's time," he told E! News on the red carpet for "Despicable Me," the upcoming animated movie he provides a voice for. "I want to fulfill my contract. When I first signed on, I had a contract for seven seasons, and this coming year is my seventh. I just thought it was time for my character to go."

That should make for his final season to be an interesting one.

Opinions on whether you think the show should/can/will go on without Michael Scott?

My opinion ... use this advance notice of Steve's departure to create a funny and cohesive FINAL SEASON and then let the show go.

Toby: Technically, I am in Human Resources, and Dwight was asking about human anatomy... I'm just sad the public school system failed him so badly.

DoctorDodge

Ditto that, Pam! I'm only at season 4, and it's surprised me to know that it's still funny at this point, but not so surprising to hear that the last couple of seasons haven't matched the high quality of before. Season 7 would be a good time to end it. To have the american Office without Michael Scott is like having the british Office without David Brent: it just shouldn't be done!

I'm still sticking to my theory that Michael Scott uncovers the Dunder Mifflin Infinity conspiracy this season! :D

:couple: No surprise at all, Pam. It's kind of a shame the US version has gone on for so long, really. When it does end, I really doubt it would have as powerful an ending as the short but sweet original. I hope to be proved wrong, though.

Speaking of which, here's a quote from Gareth from the specials:

Gareth: I did learn a lot from David. I learnt from his mistakes. We're very different people; he used humour where I use discipline. And I learnt that nobody respects him. And in a war situation, if you want your platoon to go over the top with you to certain death, it's no good saying to them "Please come with me lads, I'll tell you a joke." It's a direct order "Come with me." And they'll go "Yes, he's got good leadership skills, let's all go with him to our certain death".

I love the fact that no matter how much changed on the show, Gareth always remained a tosser!

I think Gareth and Dwight are examples of the wide range of dorks there are out there. Dwight's the kind of dork who's naive, gullible, takes his job very, very seriously, and is also heavily into scifi. Gareth's also naive and gullible, but believes himself to be the best thing that could happen to the (territorial) army, a born leader, having no clue of course that he's a skinny little dork!

I think one of my favourite Gareth lines is, "How do you hide a chair?!?" after hopping all day!

Ricky Gervais to Appear on The Office
David Brent returns!

It's been talked about since the US version of The Office began, but it looks like Ricky Gervais, the star and co-creator of the original series, is finally going to make a guest appearance.

Vulture first broke the news, saying that "David Brent will meet up with Michael Scott." Office executive producer Paul Lieberstein tells Vulture, "It's a little more than if you blink, you'll miss it, but if you don't set your TiVo right, you'll miss it."

Cameo or not, this will be a fun event for fans of both versions of The Office, that likely finally came together because Steve Carell is departing the series before the season ends. Gervais' appearance is soon too – in next week's episode, airing January 27th. TVLine.com's Michael Ausiello also confirms that Gervais is indeed playing David Brent.

Heard that the 10th anniversary set released last year is actually a pretty good deal. It's not just all the series, but a bunch of new extras, too. Pretty cheap as well. The only thing stopping me is that I have both series and the xmas specials on dvd already. Idk, looking at the extras, it might be worth a look for the original pilot, and for some extra behind the scenes insight, or for other famous people talking about it, although it'd have to be pretty bloody good to be worth watching and HOLY SHIT, WOLVERINE'S TALKS ABOUT IT?! Makes me sad to see that it's falling along the path of so many good American tv shows. That's why the Brits usually do it better - they know when to stop the damn thing!

The thing is, I do remember the US Office being pretty darn good, and hearing that makes me glad that I didn't continue watching it past season 4. Completely different to the UK version, in terms of humour and having a reduced dramatic/tragic element to it, but that just helped it to be its own thing. I do wish they had ended it when Michael left - I have no idea what it's like now, but there's very few shows out there that remain as awesome once you get rid of the lead guy (that are American).

I can never get enough of the UK version though. I mean, who can forget the powerful ending to series 2? That's just something you won't find in the US version. Certainly, it won't have an ending half as great.

But in regards to a good ending...god yes! That ending is just...hard to describe But easily the cutest thing I've seen in a long time.

I think what really makes it work is the way its done. It's funny, but considering what we got with the first 2 series and even for the first xmas special, as Brent continued to sink lower and lower just for fame, a happy ending was the last thing that could be expected. But I think it was handled with just the right amount of care to make it truly fit and not seem like a cop-out, as it so very, very easily could have done.

And you know last night how I was planning to rewatch those specials next week? Yeah, being reminded of how awesome they were has forced me to make a change of plan! :D

DoctorDodge

Watched the xmas special again on monday, still SO good! Definitely one of the greatest finales to a tv series ever!

Btw, just to get some discussion going: has anyone here not seen the original version, yet? Any plans to see it at all? And fans of the US version who saw it second, how'd you rate it? Fans of the original who saw the US version later, what were your thoughts?

Here's a link to the first ep for convenience, anyway:

I saw a few ep's of the original ... didn't really like it to be honest. Gervais is great as usual, but I wasn't feeling the rest of the supporting cast. Gervais can't carry the show by himself.

The US cast is much, much better for my money. All of them have managed to crack me up at some point throughout the series.

Heather19
05-18-2012, 09:20 AM
Agreed. I watched a few episodes but couldn't get into it. The US cast is great. They all work so well together, and they all have their little quirks.

DoctorDodge
05-18-2012, 10:20 AM
See, I have the exact opposite view. To me, the original actors are much, much more subtle. Particularly the romance between Tim and Dawn. I like Jim and Pam, but with the supporting cast of the original, it's always clear that they're aware that there's a camera on them. That's why I greatly prefer the original. The remake is a nice little sitcom with some memorable characters, but you can't really watch the original in such a way. It's a lot darker than that. It's the kind of show that walks the fine line between comedy and tragedy, at times. My recommendation: watch it again, but avoid thinking of it as a sitcom.

fernandito
05-18-2012, 11:18 AM
Well, I wasn't really looking for subtle, or tragic ... I started watching it on netflix because I was on the market for something balls out funny. And I actually like the 'I know I'm on camera' aspect, a lot of Jim and Michael's style of comedy is contingent on there being an audience, and that suits me just fine.

DoctorDodge
05-18-2012, 11:30 AM
That's exactly why I'm suggesting to watch it again. You go in expecting something obviously balls out funny, then you're unprepared for it. Like Blade Runner: first time I watched it, I really didn't like it, as I was expecting something full of action and fast paced. I mean for fuck's sake, the clue's in the fucking name: Blade Runner! So I was dissapointed I didn't get that. Of course now, it's easily one of my favourite scifi films. The original Office, I do find hilarious at a lot of moments, but it does go for total realism. For the longest time, no one watched it, because they thought it was a real documentary.

As for the remake, the characters only seem to acknowledge the camera at select moments, and mostly at comedic ones. Not 100% of the time, like the original. Remember: it's as much as what characters don't say as much as what they do say. Try and watch it differently, not as a balls-out comedy, and you may enjoy it more.

fernandito
05-18-2012, 11:58 AM

One reason why The Office (original) is one of the best tv shows ever:

Brice

DoctorDodge
05-20-2012, 03:38 PM
Well, maybe it does need to be taken in context, but it's a spot on parody of how, whenever someone thinks they're "famous" because they appeared in some kind of documentary, they ALWAYS do a shit cover of a classic song, and it ALWAYS fails to make an impression in the charts. It's just so perfectly done. That's another thing the original has over the remake: eventually getting round to exploring what being filmed and watched by a number of viewers has on the characters. With the remake, it's 8 years now, and we're still supposed to believe it's a documentary no one watches?

Oh, and Brice? Start watching the original now.

Brice
05-20-2012, 11:12 PM
To me it just has this weird intended/unintended? voyeuristic/uncomfortable/claustrophobic feel to it. I mean I think it's partly intentional, but I think it also picked up some of that unintentionally that the makers never really originally intended. It's a very weird little show.

DoctorDodge
05-20-2012, 11:26 PM
I'd definitely go for it being more intentional than unintentional, myself. Especially with how uncomfortable it is to watch at times. Always feels a little closer to real life than what most comedies should be. One of the reasons why I love it so much.

Brice
05-20-2012, 11:30 PM
Hmm..I get the impression they intended the uncomfortable vibe, but it ended up being significantly more than they intended. I'll watch more...whether they want me to or not. Realize there is the possibility I'll watch it all and decide I don't like it for the same reasons you like it.

Jean
05-20-2012, 11:38 PM
Oh, really Jean? That's a shame. :( Felt certain you would've enjoyed it, both as a fan of British comedy and how subtle and multilayered it is.I am enjoying it. I hate the picture, the camera, the light, the editing and all other things that make it a TV show as opposed to a movie (like LoM is a movie shown on television and consisting of parts, not a TV show), but, as I said, I either like or love the rest - all that you've mentioned, and all that Brice has complained of in the post above. As you predicted, the

voyeuristic/uncomfortable/claustrophobic feelis something that never fails to please bears

DoctorDodge
05-21-2012, 12:41 AM
Ah, I get ya. Yeah, I can definitely understand that. Yeah, I think, in terms of directing, editing etc, the closest thing i've seen on television that comes remotely close to feeling like a film like LoM did was Cracker. Original, of course, not (as should be expected) the Americanised remake. Watched about 5 minutes, couldn't stand another second of it.

But in terms of everything else, I'm very glad to know you're still enjoying the office. In fact, it was the reasons that Brice pointed out for it being so strange that made me think you might get some enjoyment out of it.

Been rewatching the earlier seasons of the US version. Season 1 was ok, but it took a while to kind of step out of the shadow of the original and find its own footing, but I really do enjoy the 2nd season, especially for Jim and Pam, the two actors have really great chemistry there. It's not quite as satisfying as the original, but it's a pretty darn good sitcom. It makes me sad that the network still has it on the air and, unsurprisingly, there are tons of complaints about the show running out of steam. Big reason why i pretty much stopped at season 3 was that the main story with Jim and Pam at least was finished. Not a perfect ending, but a better one than the show will ultimately get.

I've stumbled across this, and it's an interesting read, examining comments from Gervais on the US Office and how he feels about both shows:

http://www.cinemablend.com/television/Ricky-Gervais-Says-Office-Jumped-Shark-People-Overreact-32213.html

I think he's really on the money. I've nearly finished season 5, and up to what I've seen, it's still a good show. Note I said "good", at this point. Earlier seasons, with the exception of the first, perhaps, it was a great one. The Jim and Pam relationship was done really well, and there were a lot more laugh out loud moments. At the point I'm at, they're still there, but not quite so much. There's some nice drama, but it's just not as good as a couple of years before. Knowing that Michael Scott leaves in season 7 is a good moment as any for me to stop, really.

I also love how honest he is about why he did the US Office: for the money, not for the art, unlike the UK series. And I think that's a valid point, and why the UK series is so completely misunderstood a lot of the time - it is one of very, very few tv shows I've seen that, along with HBO greats The Sopranos and The Wire, could be labelled as "art". You can't really label the US show as such, but it's one hell of an easy watch, having watched the last 5 seasons over a couple of months. I think Gervais has really made it clear why they're so radically different, though.

DoctorDodge

Copying and pasting this from the RTLMYS thread because it felt relevant. Plus, I'm rewatching The Office right now, and it's still absolutely fucking brilliant. David Brent is one of my favourite TV characters ever, really.

David Brent: Life on the Road

David Brent is back! Since The Office finished back in 2003, the embarrassing boss played by Ricky Gervais has appeared in YouTube videos, sketches, and even in a couple of cameos for the American version. But now he’s finally appearing in a film for the big screen! (If you’re in the UK, at least. I think it’s getting a Netflix release in most other places, which doesn’t surprise me.) Is it a great continuation of The Office, or does it compromise too much?

One aspect I loved about the original version of The Office was how well it stuck to its mockumentary aspect. Not only did the “talking heads” scenes help give some real insight into how the characters really felt about their job and their boss in an upfront but believable way, but the moments where they say or do something completely stupid, followed by their reaction when they realised it had been caught on camera, were always hysterical. Life on the Road continues that exact same style, which was more than welcome.

The humour of the film isn’t exactly a laugh a minute, and there are many situations that feel horrendously more awkward than funny, but there are definitely moments that will have you laughing your arse off, too.

What I enjoyed about The Office most, more than the humour or the mockumentary style of it though, were the characters and their story. David Brent in particular outwardly seems funny to watch in an awkward way, but as the series went on, you could tell how much of a sad and lonely man he really was. When The Office ended, it seemed to wrap everything up (particularly with Tim and Dawn, which is still one of my favourite love stories of television, quite frankly), so I wasn’t sure how well continuing a story with Brent would work.

Surprisingly, as a continuation, it works really well. Brent is, in some ways, more of a tragicomic figure than ever. He’s no longer a boss, he’s a sales rep with dreams of bigger things, and he’s still trying far too hard to be liked. The idea that he decides to “go on tour” with a new band just because there’s a new documentary crew catching up on his life is a really nice touch. Overall, the story at times can be as depressing as it is funny, as we uncomfortably watch a middle-aged man have a massive mid-life crisis make one mistake after another. The fact that it also seems to have a lot of heart, like other stories that Gervais has worked on, is as surprising as it is rewarding.

If you didn’t enjoy the original series of The Office, this film definitely won’t be for you. It’s exactly as uncomfortable, bleak and depressing as the original series was. If you were a fan or if you’re looking for subtle, awkward humour with a great look at a man who simply tries too hard, then you should enjoy this film. Is it worth seeing on the big screen? To be honest, not really, but it was definitely great to be reunited with David Brent once more. 8/10
