In a scenario occurring way too frequently of late, you find yourself and an escort officer traversing an open, elegant, windowed hallway. Walking at a good clip, your shoes create sharp, pointed echoes which reverberate off the high glass ceiling. Winding through the mansion, you round several corners, ascend a small staircase and into an impressive formal dining room.

Several police officers are busy securing evidence in the room. Standing at a long, formal dining table, wearing his standard-issue dour face, is Detective Mike Hawkshaw. His focus is on a rumpled notepad, into which he scribbles furiously. Noticing that you and the escort officer have entered the room, he looks up and smiles. At the table, a resplendently dressed woman lays face down in her plate.

Hawkshaw nods and returns to the last of his notes. “Detective…,” you start.

He holds up one finger indicating you to wait and you do. Finishing his note, he closes his notepad and turns his full attention to you.

“Never a good sign,” indicating the woman with a tilt of his head.

“Yes,” you concur, “the food here must be terrible.”

“Poisoned.” Hawkshaw offers.

“And how can I be of service today,” you shrug, looking away from the dead woman.

“Well, I have a problem. I have this dead woman, five other party guests and ten staff members. Any one of them, excluding the woman of course, had access to the woman’s food.”

“What can you tell me about your suspects?” You inquire.

“Well, it’s like a guest list from the UN,” Hawkshaw begins. “The guests include an Ethiopian, a Mexican, an Australian, a Vietnamese and an Englishman. The staffers include two Chinese, a Brazilian, two Spaniards, two Indians, two Italians and a Russian.”

“I see, and you want me to tell you which one poisoned the lady?”

“Precisely,” Hawkshaw nods.

“I’ll need a few moments to look things over.” You explain.

On the table, you look at the odd plates, each decorated in Rorschach images. The dead woman’s plate is hidden beneath her. You move around the table, picking up each plate and spending a few moments gazing into the reflective surface.

Plate one. (http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b230/Gaberax/plate1.gif)
Plate two. (http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b230/Gaberax/plate2.gif)
Plate three. (http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b230/Gaberax/plate3.gif)
Plate four. (http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b230/Gaberax/plate4.gif)
Plate five. (http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b230/Gaberax/plate5.gif)

You’re confused regarding the images you have seen. The images make no sense. You sort and resort the images in your mind. Suddenly, it comes to you.

Now standing on the other side of the dead woman, you look to Hawkshaw and say, “I think I know who you should be focusing on.”

Which nationality do you tell Hawkshaw to question in more detail?

*blink...blink blink...*

first one looks like a gnu and a rhino in clothing
second one looks like wood beams
third one looks like a chimp, maybe a missing link
fourth one is a palm or hand or stop
fifth one is spock

The first one made me think of the term "Rhino Repulicans" (Republicans I
n Name Only). It refers to Republican politicians who supposedly have more liberal political views. I thought the other figure might be a donkey, representing the Democratic Party.

I doubt that has anything to do with it, though.

i'm pretty sure the third one is bigfoot. but that only adds to the confusion.
and why say wood beams? why not lumber? or planks?

Warmer still on this clue.

The other animal on the first one looked more like a goat to me, not a donkey or a gnu.

Also, is the third one Yeti?

The Lady of Shadows

based on color alone i'm gonna say either cherry (which isn't red like everyone thinks) or light oak.

and isn't a yeti an abominable snowman? that thing looked brown to me.

Yes, the answer to the third is Yeti. Good job, John_and_Yoko.

Thanks! :) Still don't know what the answer is, though....

"____ ____ yeti hand spock"...? No, not seeing it yet....

:excited: Does that mean I'm thinking in the right direction? I didn't think what I said would actually amount to anything...

So, maybe it's something to do with corruption?

In some stories it is, but in other stories it's the same thing as Bigfoot. I think in the "footage", it's brown.

What kind of wood? (I'll leave the obvious sexual joke alone)

The pic isn't the greatest so I'll guess "post" or "Treated."

Settle down, big fella. Maybe the details of the picture are meant to throw you off. Break it down. Simple is better. :orely::rolleyes:

Have you ever seen a collection of wood cut in those configurations before? Where?

Oh, I don't know about that. With a little arranging, some thought and imagination, you might have enough to get started with already. ;)

The Lady of Shadows
08-13-2008, 10:16 AM
so in the first one, why are we focusing on the type of animals? isn't it odd that they are shaking hands?

Oh, I don't know about that. With a little arranging, some thought and imagination, you might have enough to get started with already. ;)

The most I can come up with based on what I have so far is:

"spock yeti" = spaghetti, which would imply the Italian, but I don't know if that's right (even if it is, I don't know what the rest of it is)....

but isn't that it then? he's only supposed to be focusing on one nationality according to the puzzle.

I'm just guessing--I'd rather wait for confirmation (or lack thereof). Besides, I still want to know what the remainder of it is.

Forget the critters themselves (They reminded me of the Can-Toi, that's why I selected the picture.) It is odd that they are shaking hands. When do people (or critters) do that?

Yes! Round up the Italians, they look mighty suspicious! Great job, John_and_Yoko! For you, an old family Italian Roasted Goose recipe!

Thanks to everyone for playing! :)

===Italian Roast Goose with Garlic, Onion and Sage Stuff Ingredients

Stuffing===
1/2 ts Dried thyme; crumbled
1/4 c Unsalted butter 1/2 ts Pepper
2 sm Onions; finely chopped 1/2 ts Italian seasoning
2 Celery stalks; diced 2 Eggs; beaten to blend
5 Garlic cloves; chopped 1 c Chicken stock OR
1 pk Cubed herbed stuffing - Canned broth
Mix (14 oz)

===Goose===
5 1/2 tb Rubbed or ground dried sage 1 (12 lb) goose; fat removed
3/4 ts Salt 1 Lemon; halved
1/2 ts Dried oregano; crumbled 3 sl Bacon

===Instructions for Italian Roast Goose with Garlic, Onion and Sage Stuff===
FOR STUFFING: Melt butter in heavy large skillet over medium heat. Add onions, celery and garlic and saut?; until soft, about 8 minutes. Combine stuffing mixture, sage, salt, oregano, thyme, pepper and Italian Seasoning in large bowl. Stir in onion mixture and eggs. Add stock and mix well. Set aside.

FOR GOOSE: Preheat oven to 450F. Rinse goose inside and out; pat dry, using paper towel. Rub goose inside and out with halved lemon. Season goose inside and out with salt and pepper. Fill main cavity and neck cavity loosely with stuffing. Place any remaining stuffing in small buttered baking dish and cover with foil. Run fingers between breast meat and skin to loosen skin. Place bacon slices under breast skin. Wrap goose in cheesecloth. Place goose on rack set into large roasting pan. Roast goose 30 minutes. Reduce heat to 350F. Continue roasting until meat thermometer inserted into thickest part to thigh registers 180F, basting every 20 minutes with pan juices, about 1 hour 20 minutes. Place stuffing in covered baking dish in oven during last 40 minutes. Remove cheesecloth. Transfer goose to platter. Pass stuffing separately. Yield: 6 servings.
