View Full Version : Moving our site to a Dedicated Server

Matt
07-30-2008, 06:36 AM
Up until now, we have been using a shared server through our provider HostRocket.

Our site has grown too large for that so I am having to move us to a dedicated one.

This is going to be a big project for me and the site so please post problems here as always, I'll also use the thread to keep you updated. Below is what we are moving too.

Thank you for your patience.

Matt

2.2Ghz Intel Celeron with 512MB of RAM and a 60GB hard
drive. This comes with 1,000GB of bandwidth and the CentOS Linux
operating system.

Should be a LOT easier than Microsuck.

If you get really stuck, we can probably ask DBF for help. :)

We are hoping that this change will make the boards run much smoother, and it will also give us enough space to add a lot of cool features in the future without fear of affecting the site's usability. Hooray for dedicated servers!

matt i think this is amazing news. will it have open slots to upgrade the ram if needed later? will you be taking up a collection to cover the costs (hint hint)? if you need to just let us know! also, learning linux is a snap so i have faith you'll be able to pick it up in no time.

and daggers? :P

will you be taking up a collection to cover the costs (hint hint)? if you need to just let us know!

We will not be asking the members for any monetary donations to cover the costs of the upgrade. We are getting a bit of a deal from HostRocket because they are the ones who asked us to upgrade--due to our awesome activity--so it won't be an unbearable cost.

If we ever charge for something on the site, it would be for extras that do not already currently exist on the site. What is free for the users now will ALWAYS be free.

We all thank you, Matt.
This is our "local" hang-out now.
Nice we're getting our own place.
I second the hints of turtlesong... if you need a hand, just ask.

Matt

We should also be thanking Aaron and Hannah who are literally paying for this. :huglove:

Not only that, they are just flat cool as shit and the place wouldn't be here without them.

But thank you turtlex...that is so very sweet of you.

so it's a little confusing with all these different threads for problems and such (new skin, message board upgrades, here). i'm wondering were the best place to put this is.

i chose here and if it's wrong maybe one of the ptb can move it. i was trying to update my profile pic and it kept saying the file was too large although it was well under the 200x200 size. i've seen a lot of error messages but never this one. did i cause this because it didn't like my pic? it was the right size i promise and it was just a happy bunny pic.

oh, i did try to email as the message said but it bounced right back. sorry.

i was at this url:
http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/profile.php?do=updateprofilepic

and got this message:

Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@thedarktower.org and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

The board is very sensetive about uploading pics to it turtlesong.

Has no problem with pictures that are already hosted (either in our gallery or elsewhere)

Is the picture you are trying to load on your local computer or hosted somewhere?

Matt,

Your server is being installed right now. I will let you know when the process is
complete, and then we can get the billing information squared away. Thanks.

Check the Dogan - I started a problems thread. I'll post mine up if you think everything should be cool - because it is definitely NOT, at least as far as I can see. :)

I have a huge list to work on you guys, could everyone please be specific with the problem they are having? :grouphug:

Daghain
08-05-2008, 02:30 AM
Well, I think I know what he's talking about. For example, it says I added a new page to Towerpedia! at 5pm last night, but it was really more like 9pm. My time zone is correct in my user CP, so it must be the board thinking it's the wrong time.

Matt
08-05-2008, 02:35 AM
Yep, I noticed that, I'm working to solve the issue.

But thanks for the clarification Daggers.

Daghain

I just looked at it last night and went "WTF? It's not 5pm!"
