Here is one wall in my collection room.
I had to install these cases and tether them to the wall-California-earthquake country. Nothing fancy about the cases-spent the money on books. Mostly these hold my trades, and a few other items.

Awesome collection.

I just saw that My Pretty Pony slipcase and realized something. I was watching Veronica Mars on teusday, and there was aband called My Pretty pony on the episode, and I knew that it sounded familiar. The Veronica Mars writers are well known to dropping little tributes like that, but I had totally forgotten that that was a King short story.

Jerome, that is so freakin' impressive. I love the way you have everything displayed - that's what I long for, but it just isn't going to happen with a 4-year old and a 6-year old romping around our house.

And my kids would end up destroying TG's place after not too long what with all those books down low and those guitars out.

I'll see what photos I already have, but really I need to take some current pics.

I do like how you are able to display your books Jerome. Unfortunately the size of my Condo limits me from doing something nice like that. And the Lettered Dark Dreamers, and lettered SK, along with the others, whoa, it's very impressive!

Wait to you see what others have. Someone I (we) know has an entire basement room with FAR FAR more than I have-including original art that would/will blow your mind. Many more beside him.

That being said-to all beginning collectors out there:
My collection started with my 1st book, I obtained books slowly over time. I was renting a small flat in the beginning. One piece at a time over ~25 years I have what I have.
If your collection is important to you, show us all.
I think every collector here is from humble roots-no silver spoons in our mouths that I'm aware of.

This bears repeating. The collectors that I have 'met' are amongst the nicest, generous people I know.

Personally I spent a lot of my years growing up living in a mobile home. It was neither fancy nor privileged. So, yeah, there you go.

Jerome is correct. Carlosdetweiller who has registered here has quite likely the finest King collection (and way more than just King) in the entire world. Absolutely awe inspiring. Another, Hutch, also has an incredible collection but not having any personal insight into how much he has (as I do with carlos), I'd only guess that he is likely the closest runner-up to carlosdetweiller. I meanm man, I am so proud of my own collection, but I am not in the same league as these guys in terms of completeness.

I need to post some of my own pictures, but as Jerome and Patrick have both attested, we collectors I think are some of the nicest bunch of people I have ever dealt with. We are proud of our collections but NEVER flaunt what we have and totally root/back another collector who has acquired something that they love, whether it be a modest or expensive item. It is for the love of collecting and the chase after something desireable that lights our fires. Many times the chase ends up with us empty handed, but that's ok.

instead of adding an attachment to your post, set up an account at photobucket (http://photobucket.com/) or imageshack (http://imageshack.us/) (i think photobucket is better but that's just my opinion) then upload your pics there. once the pictures are uploaded they'll have three codes to choose from, copy and paste the IMG code into your post and the full-size pic will show up. :) it sounds a tiny bit complicated but it's really very easy to do.

Wiz, upload the picture to imageshack. Before you click upload, check the box to resize image, choose 800x600. Once uploaded, copy the bottom URL they give you.
On the options above your text click insert image. Make sure you delete out the existing http:// in the box, copy your URL into the box and click OK.
That should put your pic in at the largest allowable size.

From what I have seen, collecting this kind of stuff takes dedication to the cause. Not necessarily tons of money, just drive.

I am so glad this thread is here and I get to benefit from serious collectors of King. I plan to become one some day.

This is not the most valuable item in my collection, but I think it might be the rarest...the "Masters of Horror" antholgy had "The Monkey" in it, and I have never seen another signed copy...which makes sense because if someone had an opportunity to get a book signed by King, why get some vague anthology signed? So I'm not saying it's unique, but I've never seen another offered for sale or exhibition before or since...

I see it only shows up as a thumbnail, but I'm too lazy to deal with Imageshack, and the little image makes the point anyway...

Hi all. I'm not a collector of books so I have a question for you all. Why do I see multiple copies of some? Is each one different and more valuable than the others? I'm curious. I love the pictures you guys have posted though. :)

Hi MonteGss:

There are various reasons for multiple copies of some books. Let me address the DT series first and I will lay this out very simply and there is no intent to insult anyone's intelligence.

The DT publisher Grant, issued each hardcover of the series in different states, a Signed/Lettered edition (signed by King and artist), a Signed numbered edition (signed by King and artist), a regular trade edition, and in the case of the last 3 books, an Artists edition (signed only by the artist). Some collectors like myself desire all states of the book for their collection. Also, with the DT series, the holy grail is to own a complete set of S/L editions all with the same number. While I could expound further, I think this gives you a rough idea as to why multiple copies are owned.

Also, some of us own, let's say a regular 1st edition of The Talisman, but also own another copy signed by King, or another copy signed by Straub, or even one signed by both. As you can gather, there are lots of various combinations.

I hope that goes a ways to answering your question. We love questions here, so keep asking away!!

I have a UK trade edition, first edition first printing, of Lisey's Story. I also have the another copy signed by King, and I also have a third printing signed by King. Somehow, though, I ended up with yet another first/first that I use as my reading copy. I also have a copy of the Lisey's Story proof that is numbered 78 of 100 in a cardboard slipcase , another proof without a slipcase numbered 187 and a copy of the proof dust jacket that is different than the one used. A picture of this is attached.

Here is my little bookshelf of King's books. I have about 3 boxes in my closet as well filled with my old paperbacks of his. I guess the most "valuable" thing I have would be my Secretary of Dreams I got from Cemetary Dance (bottom shelf on the far left) and I do have an ARC of Lisey's Story (top shelf near the right).

DT1 Gunslinger was issued by Grant with 500 numbered signed copies, 35 lettered copies, 12 Publisher's copies, 40 Author's copies and 10 Artist's copies. This information is in Beahm's Stephen King Collectibles. 10,000 Trade first edtion first printings were done. A second printing of 10,000 was done a while later. 11,000 third printings were issued as part of the Dark Tower Gift Set (along with a second printing of DTII and a first printing of DTIII in a slipcase.) The lettered Gunslinger goes at least around $10k if you can find one. I've never seen any of the other special copies. The signed numbered DTI goes in the $4-7k range.

Well I assume we should start posting new King purchases. So if you get something new, post it, so we can see it!

This I just got from Ceri's sale. A First UK Edition of The Bachman Books. I got outbid for one of these about a year ago, so I was pretty glad to get a copy of this at a reasonable price. And it's in great shape.

nice collection funky.... looks like a great start of a growing collection (also looks like you're going to need a new bookcase soon)

and i like your album collection? to the side.
i have been a mobile and club dj (second jobs) for 18 years... when i first started out.... i primarily had to use vinyl or cassettes, since that was what was predominantly available. needless to say i have a collection of LP's and 45's out the wazoo.... along with several $800.00 turntables- all stored in closets now. man i hated unloadeding/carrying those trunks of albums into gigs - especially if there were stairs....talk about heavy.

Thanks. Yes I have been Dj'ing since late '92 and all of my records are in the closet next to those. I have so many that they fill the closet and are now coming out into the room. I still play vinyl but I mostly play cd's now, and those 2 technics that I have are collecting dust, while the newer cdj's are being used extensively!
I am very proud of my collection, when I started out I had mostly paperbacks and just about all of those are gone now. Most of those books have been purchased at used books stores by paying anywhere from 99 cents to $7. The only big purchases were the DT 1-4 books which I didn't have in hardback and I really only sprung for those about 6 months ago. I still go faithfully every Saturday around town looking for books that people think are just trash, such as my Firestarter which I don't believe has ever been read. But I have fun and my wife thinks I am nuts, but she said she'd rather have me collecting books that I can hand down to my son than a bunch of records that she is tired of tripping over!

It is not the slipcased version, and yes as you can see it is signed by Joe Hill and Stephen King. I was pleasantly surprised when I opened it up!

Well RF I ordered 20th Century Ghosts from PS Publishing (the hardcover version) and never got it - Pete mailed it twice and twice it was lost and finally Pete mailed me the Trade Paperback version and refunded me the difference. So I don't ALWAYS get mine first.

Perhaps though as its coming from England and I live on the east coast that has something to do with it!

tippy4
05-25-2007, 01:00 PM
Well that is weird, because according to the PS website, the slipcased edition has an ISBN # of 9781905834815, which is what yours shows.

I am wondering now if the only difference between the two books is that one has a slipcase and one does not?

(edit)

According to Bev Vincent, the slipcased edtion will be signed by the writers AND artists.

So i guess for an extra $100 you get the slipcase and the artists' signatures.

I agree. Initially I pre-ordered this book when it was announced because Joe Hill and Steven Erikson (great fantasy writer) were in it, and it just had a killer line-up. But I didn't care for the artist signatures and just bought the signed hardcover. When it was announced that King now had a story in the book I emailed PS asking if the hardcover would be signed, and Peter said he couldn't guarantee that it would be. So I paid an extra $90 (I think) upgrading to the slipcased edition.

I hope there is some bells and whistles with the slipcased edition, but I doubt it. the one hope I have is, this is the first slipcased edition of their hardcover magazine, so hopefully it will be something special?

btw, I hope people read the whole book, instead of just the King and Hill stories, there is some really great stuff. Including 8 pieces from Michael Marshall Smith, a relatively unknown author that just might knock your socks off (I hope, as I haven't read it yet, but he's good). As well as Connie Willis, Erikson, Lebbon, Cooper, and many others. It's a great line-up!

As stated above, there was no initial guarantee that the regular hardcover was going to be signed by King, just the slipcased edition. Anyone who got the regular hardcover for $50.00 should just look at it as having gotten a great deal. Having ordered the more expensive one, I won't begrudge anyone who got a deal on the $50.00 edition. It was a fluke.

I don't particularly believe that the $50.00 one will badly hurt the value of the more expensive, slipcased version, but just like with the Colorado Kid controversy, if it upsets anyone that much and you feel like you got rooked on the slipcased edition, just cancel your order.

I'm sure someone else out there will be more than willing to snatch it up ;)

I actually might not have a choice. I just received the signed hardcover version today, not the slipcased one that I paid an extra $90.00 for.

Big and small, we want them all.

I am bumping this thread as a house for links to hosted collections. The goal is to set up the page with some pics (I can use your av if you want but I love a face pic) and list collections and a link to the album.

All you have to do is create a free album on photobucket.com for just your collection pictures. Host them with descriptions and then post the link here. Example..

http://www.thedarktower.org/images/Jerome.jpg Link to Randall Flaggs hosted collection (pic is a little big of course, it's just one I had on my computer)

Then another one and so on. Hopefully the mods can edit my first post in this thread with any hosted collections they run across in the forum.

Thanks everyone, I love seeing these and I think they are great for the page itself. Many people browse the site without signing up for or reading the forums too much.

well a new proof. It's the UK proof of Black House. This is one of the cooler proofs, imo. It's only the first 213 pages, and it has all the spelling mistakes, marked in the book. Also the crow is actually a cut out front over with the black crow actually printed on page 2.

http://www.gusfromcbus.com/webimages/blackhouseuk.gif

I now have both proofs for the Black House, along with the Gift Set, S/N Edition, First Trade, both UK First Trades, and the first paperback. So I now have my Black House collection complete. :)

My old copy of the IT I read while I was younger, when it came out. Somewhere along the line I lost the dustjacket. So I eventually threw it away a few years back. So I don’t currently own a US First Edition of IT. Although I have looked, but to me, since it’s a large book, it’s hard to find in F/F condition. They all seem to be very loose from a reading. In my experience it’s hard to find a tight copy at a reasonable price. So congrats sarajean!

It or Different Seasons. I would have to say between the two stores I have not seen a good copy of ether in two years. In my opinion that's a hell of a good $4.00 spent.

And yea, I too am looking for $7.99 at the most to pay. I could pay $35.00 and get a good tight copy, but I refuse. I'm in no hurry.

I did add a nice piece to my collection today - received a 1st Edition The Stand in great shape from DHutch - :-)

My list of firsts still needed has dropped by two this eyar what with this and winning a 1st Ed Carrie a new months ago in the SKFakes competition.

Still need firsts as follows:

Salem's Lot
Night Shift
The Shining
Thinner,
The Gunslinger
The first four Bachman paperbacks

Most of these are pretty pricey so I'll bide my time until the right deals comes along!

Anyway, It been a good week. I received two King items. King, etc. a mass market paperback sized promotional book that has extracts from 12 king books. It was given away free on King's UK Bag of Bones tour. And I received Gauntlet, Issue #2, which also has a hardcover edition signed by King. But this is just the paperback, no sig (but new). It's a special Stephen King issue.

Also I picked up Gauntlet, issue 1. Neil Gaiman Mirrormask Lettered, Scott Lynch The Lies of Locke Lamora Lettered, and two Richard Matheson books: The Shrinking Man, and A Stir of Echoes, along with a CD of Matheson reading from The Shrinking Man.

Carrie is easy (but still a few hundred dollars). Night Shift in VG+ or better will be expensive. Rage is also very expensive (for a paperback) in VG+ or better condition.

A "Lettered" Talisman

A lettered state of an interminate number of copies designated the "artist's presentation state" signed by the authors and the book's 10 illustrators. These were for presentation and not for sale. The limitation page reads: "This presentation copy #___ of 70 copies of this special illustrated first edition of the Talisman is signed by the participants in the edition and is not for sale."

The Signed Limited books come from the publisher with signatures. They can be obtained many ways. Some books are bought from the publisher direct, some are bought on the open market.

Other than the extra 10 artists signing the Talisman, is the book itself different than the 1/1000 S/L?

So is the one I've got trade? Mine cost £25 I don't know if thats good, bad or reasonable!

I try to justify my spending on books and comics by comparing it to how much Rob and I might spend down the pub...in theory I'd splash out on a book and stay in that weekend.

In theory...

25 pounds, $50 US is the published rate so that is a fine price. I doubt you'll see the book at a UK Costco for 40% off retail.
I always try to spend just a bit more on books than beer, but I'm not always successful.

I will end up with almost all variations. I did not order all three trayacsed versions ($750) each-ouch, but I will end up with:
3 Trades
3 Artists
3 Slicased S/L
1 Traycased S/L

Us collectors are a silly lot.
Hey don't lump all the collectors in with your habits, I only bought three editions, lol

And great buy Darkthoughts. We all started somewhere.

RF-

I can understand if you are drinking local craft brewed beers, but if you're drinking that panther piss Budweiser or Miller, then I gonna start worrying about you my friend:lol:

My guess is that you haven't touched a mainstream beer in about 20 years!

About the only time is on a plane, or in Costa Rica. It actually serves to remind me how good/bad beer can be.

I have a friend who loves Blatz and Past Blue Ribbon. I think he does it as an attention thing, because there is no way someone could like that crap. :cyclops:

Anyway a new acquisition is two Artist copies of The Colorado Kid, Chadbourne and Potter. I have to say I was pleased with the Traycased Edition, but $100 each for an Artist Edition was too much. I think I got shafted here. A King signed book or a Trade Edition were both better deals, imo. Now I'm thinking should I just deal with it and walk away or buy a Miller Artist Edition and Slipcase? *shakes head* lol

Anyway, I usually don't like Chadbourne, but I have to say he did a great job with his book. I like it!

a few new items in the past few days.

first three proofs. Two I haven't owned, and got half-price off on a bookstore closing. And good thing I passed on both of these in the past couple of years. I got the best price with the sale. Also I bought one of Cemetery Dance's Grab Bags and got the proof of The Non-Fiction (which I really like after looking through it)

Second, and thanks go to Ari for asking Alan Clark to post this print on his site, is a print of the toy box that the Limited Edition Regulators was packaged in. With A nice little remarque in the bottom right. I also got no 1 out of 500 :)

Here are a few purchases from the last couple of weeks. I am pretty happy with all of them.

http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/2933/picture014croppedaq0.jpg

I know the cover art is torn and in the following picture you will see a former owner's embossed stamp (is that the right name for those annoying things?) but it only cost me $150. I figured I could accept a few blemishes and use the saved money to make a few more purchases.

http://img250.imageshack.us/img250/9235/picture013pk4.jpg

As you can see from the stamp it is from the library of Shirley Bachman. If someone could confirm her relation to Richard Bachman I would really appreciate it.;)

Finally:

This is the McSweeney's #10, not the Vintage Books version.

I am also supposed to have a proof of this book coming but the seller seems to have disappeared after my payment. I am currently in a dispute through Paypal with the seller, trying to get my money back. Who knows what will come of it.

Nice stuff. I never understood screwing a book or portfolio up by signing, embossing etc. Might as well mark it like a dog-piss on it.

Nate, if you paid via credit card, you might want to dispute the charge with the credit card company also. I had to do this a few years ago. Paypal refused to settle, so I disputed the charge with my credit card company and they accepted it and reversed the transaction with Paypal.

Then I got an email from Paypal stating that I should have gone to them first. I sent all their emails back to them where they refused to act. I never heard another word from them.

Thanks John, I will call them too. I am giving Paypal their chance but don't have that much confidence in their ability to right the wrong. American Express though, usually deals with things better.

Given Cemetary Dance's history of late shipments, I'll believe these have shipped when I have them in my hands. I would never rely on what they say in their website.
