From SKMB.

The book signing in November is not in Bangor. It will be in Massachusetts but we don't have full details that we can release at this time. The usual policy is no more than 2 books, one old and whatever the latest release is since most book signings are done around the time of a new release.

Let's keep each other up to date on this in terms of when the actual venue is announced as well as the time. Don't want to get shit out on tickets if it turns out to be one of those events.

Considering he lives here, he hasn't actually done a "bring anything" signing in New England in a long time...he did the Harvard signing, but that was for the Best American Short Story book only...

I actually hope he does do tickets, only because a GA situation will probably turn messy...but either way, I plan to be there...

would you like a fucking dissertation?

first - announcement

second - signing

third - "due to", although a commonly used synonym for because, should only be used when speaking in terms of monetary debt.

fourth - ellipses (. . .) should only be used

in quoting another's author's work, in which case there are several rules which are inapplicable herein.
at the end of a sentence (with a fourth dot) to indicate the trailing off of a thought.
in the middle of the sentence to indicate the sentence is going in another direction but is still consistent with the original thought.

fifth - tee hee? really? at least give us an evil laugh for gan's sake!

:nana:

p.s. you spelled lots of and yelling incorrectly as well. i'm surprised you spelled stephen king's name correctly!

I think NOT. There will be a flood of signed Just Past Sunsets on eBay after this event is over. I guess it's worth it to pay $50 and take your chances that you can get your book signed.

I thought there would be another signing? This one being in Massachussets and the one that was previously mentionned being somewhere else (Bangor?)

The "signing rules" are so.... especially the :

o Authors cannot write out personal inscriptions.
o Authors are unable to participate in any interviews.

What if the author wanna say something or sign something particular? (i guess they can, you're not allowed to ask) psssst
that does really sux!

The one in Bangor was re-scheduled, but I can't remember to where. This is a different one.

I'm definately going to try to go, it's right nearby where I live, so I don't think I could possibly pass it up. I was really hoping to get another book signed though.

What do you think the chances really are of getting your book signed by King in person? Because if it's slim I might have to pass that by. We'll see.

what
09-15-2008, 07:30 AM
I may not be reading this correctly but with the purchase of a ticket you are guaranteed a signed book, but possible not signed in person? And the $50 includes a copy, but can you purchase an extra to be signed? I know Bango was getting extras so I assume that means yes?

bangoskank1
09-15-2008, 08:24 AM
Bango pulls strings, but the answer is you can get in the door and hear them talk for 15 bucks....for 50 bucks you get your choice of King book or Russo book which reserves you a spot in line to be signed in person...for 150 buckaroos you get front of the line as well a mingling with both authors afterwards....which is cool as well....and also for like I'm thinkin 25 bucks (I could be wrong on that but this is Bango here I'm prolly not) you get the paper back of Russos book which he wil also sign....I have met Russo a few times...he's a good writer...he was also at the signing we had here at Harvard in october for american short stories which he read from as well as signed.....any more questions??

I feel like if you are paying THAT much for a hardback book at a BOOK signing, you should be able to witness the author signing YOUR book. As for me, I am planning to go. I am also planning to get one of the top priced tickets so I can get a chance to actually meet the man himself. I'll wait until I actually have secured tickets before I buy a plane ticket.

Rahfa
09-15-2008, 02:03 PM
Well, I'm sort of relieved it's so far from NH...that's too far a haul for a signed copy of just one book...I'd try to go if I could bring another book, but then I might not be certain if I could get it signed in front of me.

The VIP things sounds worthwhile if it wasn't a long trip...should at least get a chance to shake his hand or something...but I'm happy to pass and leave the tickets for someone else! haha...

Damn charity. I just want to meet him, look him in his eyes and say my "thank you". I really don't even care about the signature.

Sam
09-15-2008, 05:06 PM
Not that I want skip that part of it. I'm just saying I would MUCH rather shake his hand and speak with him a moment than get his signature written into a book. All the signature is, to me at least (and I have numerous signatures from authors I have met and talked with at conventions), is a reminder. I look at those signed books and know I will never sell them. I open them, read the signature and inscription, and remember the occasion of the signing. Sort of like my shotglass collection. But my shotglasses are more valuable since they revolve around my relationship with my wife.:couple:

Wait so is the EXACT date November 6th? I need to know, because i might be making a trip up to Boston when it happens and if i went a day late or something i'd be so devastated

And what are the ticket things about? I really think i need more information before i go up to Massachusetts
If someone could help me on that area and give me more information or a link to more information it would be greatly appreciated :)

I just realized (since I didn't really pay attention to this thread because I can't get to this signing) that it is scheduled for November 6. The official announced publication date for Just After Sunset is November 11. Does this mean that King has ANOTHER book he'll be signing or will there be preliminary copies of Just After Sunset?

I'm sure they are prelim copies...if I remember correctly, either the Buick 8 or DT V events in NYC was a week or so before the actual release date.

In any event, I think the news release specifically said it was only JAS being signed.

I was able to get two tickets at the $50 level. I also got them to put me on a waiting list for the BIG tickets should one come open. It took me an hour and ten minutes of constant redialing as fast as I could hit the button to finally get through.

I am despondent though that I was not able to get the tickets I wanted. I was looking forward to actually getting to meet him. Now it's not even certain I will get to see him sign the book I'll be getting.

The $125 King tix are long gone (there were 100 sold; Russo $125 tix still available)

I bought 2 $50 tickets (worker said there are 400 or maybe more of these). It was all I could get and the other ticket is spoken for (sorry ).

IT WAS VERY STRANGE AND DIFICULT TO GET THROUGH....
I started right after 8:30 and for the longest time my cell would dial and then come back with message call ended almost immediately without me ever hearing it ring or go anyplace. This happened dozens of times. I eventually (sometime after 11:15 got to hear it ringing with no answer and then a disconnect after a couple dozen rings.... I did not give up though and got through the next time. The person who answered was very personable and professional and made sure I was clear on all details.

Just a thought:
Give 'em to Wiz who only was able to get the $50 tickets. Then he can go to the VIP event and still get four books since he'll have four tickets. Then he can mail you your two books.

HERE IS A MESSAGE i RECIEVED TODAY FROM ODYSSEY BOOKS

Dear friends,

Yesterday was quite a day at the Odyssey. As you know, ticket sales for the "Conversation with Stephen King and Richard Russo" event began at 8:30 in the morning and we received calls from all over the country (Florida, Tennessee...) and internationally (Ireland, Canada...) to attend. We and The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts are simply thrilled with the enthusiasm and response.

Tickets for the event ARE still available, but they're going to sell out quickly, so call now if you want to attend. Below is a list of the tickets currently available.

VIP Reception tickets: SOLD OUT!

Still available:

Ticket with a Hardcover Book: $50.00 (includes either Stephen King's Just After Sunset or Richard Russo's Bridge of Sighs)
Ticket with a Paperback Book: $25.00 (includes a paperback copy of Russo's Bridge of Sighs)
"No Book" Ticket: $15.00

The number of tickets in each tier is limited. There is a maximum of 4 tickets per caller. All ticket sales are final.

Best,
Joan, Neil, Emily R.

Here is what I was told by Neil this afternoon. The rule is ONE book per person in the line/at the table. If you have several tickets, this means you will just have to get in line more than once. They have no problem with that, you just can't get more than one book signed at a time.

Also something to keep in mind. While I was speaking to Neil, I expressed my concern regarding actually getting a signed book at the event because if you look again at their website it says:

The line for getting books signed will be formed on the basis of ticket numbers. The authors will sign books for two hours. We anticipate that there will be enough time for all those with book tickets to get their books signed, but we cannot guarantee it. If you cannot get your book signed at the event, the Odyssey will have pre-signed books that you can get with your ticket. Books must be picked up by the end of the day on Friday, November 7.

This concerned me for obvious reasons. The system that will be used is a number system. From what I gathered from my conversation each ticket has a number assigned to it, so your number is dependant on the number (VIP tickets got the lowest numbers) and the number is dependant on WHEN you bought your ticket. He said that he thought everyone who bought a ticket on October 1 should have their book signed at the event. They are uncertain if there will be time for those who are buying tickets today (Oct. 2) and later to get their book signed. He said they will have about 100 presigned books for those who do not get their books signed at the event.

There have been a couple of additions to the website (I think they had no odea the response was going to be so overwhelming). It reads:

ALL TICKETS SALES ARE FINAL. Tickets may be picked up at the Odyssey starting October 22 and until 4:00 on November 6. Tickets will also be available at the Will Call table in Chapin Auditorium after 5:15 (for Reception ticket holders) or 6:00 (for others) on November 6.

We cannot mail tickets.

PLEASE NOTE: ALL TICKETS NOT SOLD THROUGH THE ODYSSEY BOOKSHOP (E.G., EBAY) ARE STILL SUBJECT TO ALL RULES AND REGULATIONS OF THE ODYSSEY BOOKSHOP AND THE FOOD BANK OF WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS. THE ODYSSEY AND THE FOOD BANK ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DELIVERY AND AVAILABILITY OF TICKETS SOLD OUTSIDE OF THE ODYSSEY BOOKSHOP.

So if you're thinking of buying tickets via ebay, please be careful.

Patrick

Interesting information, Sam. Thanks for sharing it.

... So if you're thinking of buying tickets via ebay, please be careful. That's always sound advice.

wizardsrainbow
10-03-2008, 02:55 AM
And, as I think I posted before, there were 100 Premium tickets sold and there are at least 400 of the $50 tickets. Potentially, that is 500 people standing in line at the book signing...granted some are there for Russo, but probably not too many.

So, how many books can King sign in 2 hours?

No inscription, assembly line format. If he does 3 every minute (reasonable, given lines moving, etc). He gets through 360 people. I am guessing that he cannot get through the entire line. I will be happy if my numbers are 250 or lower.

Sam
10-03-2008, 03:46 AM
I don't think they expect him to get through the entire line, but what I do think is they could have asked him how many signatures he was willing to/could sign and plan for that number and have extras in reserve for those who may not make it in the line. I would be VERY upset if I drive all the way from SC to just sit there for a reading after having paid for a ticket that (in my opinion) entitles me to a signed book.

Understand that I would not and do not hold Sai King responsible for such a thing. I once held a job that required my signature to be signed more than 800 times and it took me most of the 12 hour shift to sign that many times. I know it takes time to sign your name. I would be upset at the store for not planning better. I don't want to sound like a crazed fan, but I flew to NYC for the Evening With Harry, Carrie, & Garp just to hear King read (The story of Lardass from The Body) and took a few books JUST IN CASE there was a signing. I plan to drive to this event as my wife and I are planning to make this our vacation and are going to stop at numerous places and just see the countryside. It will be a nice things, but I wouldn't be going to South Hadley if it weren't for this event. And to go up with a ticket that, from my understanding, guarantees me an opportunity to have my book signed only to be turned away would wound me. To be told afterward "I'm sorry, but we don't have enough signed books so you won't be getting one" would infuriate me. True, I would have a copy of JAS a week before it came out, but I would have felt robbed.

Maybe that makes me a greedy bastard, maybe that means I'm just another crazy-ass fan, but this is something I have dreamed of, wished for, and hoped for since I was 12 and first read Cycle of the Werewolf. Even then I wanted to be able to meet the man who wrote those words that pulled me into his world and held me hostage. I wanted to say thank you for all that he gave me when I lived in a world that I hated so much I tried to leave it 3 times. I wanted to get him to sign a copy of one of his books for a reminder so I could look at it and remember the time I got to look in his eyes and shake his hand. All of that I wanted, even as a child. Now I sit with one of my life's dreams close at hand, and I guess that the simple thought of someone else's poor planning possibly ruining it just makes my mind start to run amok.

I do believe that we will receive our books, I do believe we are entitled to them through the purchase of our tickets (provided Sai King is able to make the event), and I do believe we will all be happy. Here's to November 6, may we all end that day safe, healthy, and happy with our memories and our signed books. :excited:

Nerak
10-03-2008, 04:36 AM
Yeah, my biggest concern is them saying that the people who don't get their signed books can pick them up at the book store the next day. Well, I will be driving 2 1/2 hours to get there that night and then going home the same night. I will not be driving 2 1/2 hours back to get the other two. So I will be trying like hell to get them that night.

I think they should have extras there, just in case. Cause, what is Steve going to do after the two hours are up, sign more books to equal the number of tickets sold? He may have just as well stayed there and signed for them in person, right?

Sam
10-03-2008, 07:06 AM
Karen, if you do not get some your books signed that evening, I will be happy to pick them up for you and mail them since I won't be leaving until the next day. There are actually 3 on eBay, all from the same seller. :arg: I sent them a message congratulating them on getting tickets and asked what the reserve was. Here's the reply.

Thank you, Im so excited to go and I can't wait. Its only an hour north of me so I'm very happy about that. I'm not sure how much the books are going to go for. I have the reserve set at 350 for all three listings. If they don't go that high, I will relist them a little lower. I figured since this is the only signing for the book, and the fact that he doesn't do signings much anymore and may stop doing them altogether because of his health, that they would go pretty high. Winter is going to be tough for my family this year money wise, so whatever I make is going to go to filling the heating oil tank and buying cord wood for the wood stove. I got six tickets and already sold one book to a frequent customer for 400 so I figured that 350 was a decent reserve.

jhanic
10-04-2008, 10:18 AM
I think that's a bit high. We'll see what happens. All three have bids, but all are, right now, well below $150. Of course, they all have about seven more days to run.

Amen. I can understand about tough times. Hell, I'm living them myself right now. If she thinks things are tough, try adding cancer treatments into the mix. I've sold part of my collection (not my King's yet) so I can pay the bills, but I just can't see taking that many tickets from others who want to be there just so I can sell the proceeds. But, that's just me. I have my tickets and I'll be there. I'm not be bidding on those, so that's that. Then again, my collection mostly consists of limited editions and inscribed books. I only have a few books that were flat signed, and I was there for every signature I have. I treasure the meeting more than the signature.

I did put a bid on one of the auctions and, of course, didn't meet the reserve which is why I sent the email. There are actually 3 on eBay, all from the same seller. :arg: I sent them a message congratulating them on getting tickets and asked what the reserve was. Here's the reply.

I am VERY glad to hear they are trying to get those auctions removed. I don't begrudge anyone their chance to make money, but I really do believe this goes beyond that and into the realm of slimeballery. In my opinion.

You folks ever consider that she may need the extra signings to finance her own book signing? As long as she follows the rules who are any of you to interfere. Also after reading 8 pages of posts you all manage to work the system to help each other out to get a book. That's fine and I have no problem with it. In fact it's nice to see folks working together. But, are all of you here the only "worthy" collectors? Maybe there are folks out there that can't afford to blow $50.00 on the ticket, $300.00-$500.00 for airfare (depending on location), $75.00 -$125.00 pernight for hotel plus expenses for a book they could buy on-line for $350.00-$400.00?

And by the way, capitalism is the system we endorse and live in. If you folks aren't (as some poster stated earlier) "Greedy Whores" then maybe you should start selling your collector copies (when you do sell them) at the original DJ prices. You all contribute to the value of these books just as much if not more than she has. Supply and Demand is the rule of the land. She just wants her own copy and to keep warm in the winter. What the Heck is wrong with that? Just because she isn't in your little clique she shouldn't be denied. She took the risk and the initiative on this venutre. Just because you didn't get one doesn't give you the right to deny her.

Hate the game not the playa.

Remember our beloved SK still takes a cut of every book, magazine article, movie ticket and/or piece of memorabilia he puts out. Signings are a marketing tool and donations are largely for tax purposes and personal charities (even though I'm sure they end up on his long form in April). It's a business folks. Not one of you would let your traycased this or that edition go for less than it's "worth" unless, the situation demanded it. In her case it seems that that idiom somewhat applies.

Think about it a bit before you all flame my ass.

P.S. In case any of you self righteous folks was gonna wonder. I just got over an amputation resulting from diabetes. I also just completed a year of Chemo for liver cancer and live in Arizona. So I can't get there this time around but I collect SK too. So I paid her to go for me. Is that alright with you folks? Coincidentally, no-one in the NE offered to go to the signing for people who were handicapped or financially challenged on this site. I understand that and it's cool. But, don't mess with my chance to get one!!!

Wow man--I was totally with your opinion being spoken in here until you decided to insult everyone on the board. I have not read any self righteousness in the thread.

However, you are totally welcome to the opinion and I'm glad you are getting a book, the effort to take them down was done by Ms Mod who is King's secretary so that's outside our influence.

So maybe its a good idea to remember that everyone's opinion is welcome here, yours and others.

With all due respect, I did not, IMHO, insult everyone on the entire board. I was referring to those people who posted stating that they had issues with her listing and those that chose to refer to her as a "Greedy Whore" (read further back, Matt). They are the ones I was referring primarily to as "self righteous". If you inferred another message in my post than I apologize to you. That was not my intent.

I was just defending her rights (and I guess), my own as well to those that were impugning them. If you want to ban me or something for that then I suppose so be it. I just thought that calling someone a "Greedy Whore" was more an unfair insult than an opinion. Perhaps, I should have quoted that post instead.

Wow. You are the first to mention banning. Matt said you are entitled to your opinion and we respect that. (In fact I almost completely agree with the method you went about to get a signed book).
Relax, continue the discourse and we can all enjoy a rational discussion on the subject.

I'm not going to ban you, I just felt like it was a bit of an attack.

However, you have an opinion that folks are self righteous over this, others had their opinion.

(I do agree, that turn of phrase was inappropriate)

In the end, it would be up to her to be offended at the characterization and if she wanted to sign up and report it, the site has a procedure that would handle it. Its never useful to get offended on the behalf of someone else.

The bottom line is that SK's office is trying to keep this from happening so the opinion on weather or not it should is pretty much there already.

And thanks Jerome, that response shows the caliber of the staff around here.

Hi All, First of all, I have to say that I was a bit taken aback when I read about someone calling me a "Greedy Whore". That was a bit much, but not everyone is graced with decency.

Secondly, Thank You to Merlin for piping up and defending me. You are much appreciated My Friend.

Third, I really don't understand why everyone is so angry at my three little listings on ebay. No one in here knows me or the daily struggles I have to face either. I have two very little boys and they are now, and always will be #1 to me. If you look at the things I have sold recently, You will see that I have had to give up alot of my most treasured books to make ends meet. To me, it has been like being thrown in the fire on Reaping Day. I have a nice collection but I do not have any special editions or limited editions because I can't afford them, but I do have a nice collection of all 1st Editions that I have had to sell a lot of. I also sold a few more to be able to get tickets to this signing.

I have had butterflies in the stomach ever since getting through on the phones because I am so excited about being able to stand in front of Stephen King himself and get a book signed. One of the books is for myself of course, and it will be the only signed book I own and it will be kept and treasured. I bought a few more tickets so that I could sell some and make enough money to fill my oil tank and keep my kids warm this winter and buy some firewood for the woodstove. Yes, I am taking advantage of this situation, but I don't feel that its for a bad reason, and I CERTAINLY will not be the only one to do so.

I also don't understand why my three listings, out of the thousands upon thousands of Stephen King books listed on ebay for crazy huge amounts of money, are the ones that are getting everyone so upset. Is is because mine just happen to be the first ones on there ??? We all know that once the signing has happened, there will be many many more listed. I also don't understand why someone would want to have my listings removed. I don't see anything about having other listings removed. There are hundreds of obviously fake SK signatures for sale on ebay....I don't hear anything about getting those removed. You would think you would be more outraged at the fake signatures then my three chances to make money to help my family out this winter.

I was just keeping to myself but I had to say something at this point. What Merlin said was right, If some of you guys on here had to sell your collections, god forbid , I don't think you would be asking face value for your books, or even close to it. Why is what I am doing so different ? Why is so much effort being put into ending my three little listings ? Come the last few weeks of November I will bet that there will be dozens more on ebay from this signing, are they all going to be removed as well ?

Sorry to make my reply so long. I just don't understand all this. I do welcome any and all replies and opinions as well, just try to keep the name calling to a minimum...lol.
Thanks :rose:

Welcome to the site. For what it's worth, I don't begrudge your efforts one bit. There may be others here who disagree, but hopefully we can have a passionate, but not destructive converstation on the matter.
As far as being removed from Ebay, that is a matter FAR out of our hands here at TheDarktower.com Auctions flagged by Ebay are completely under their control.
If someone officially connected with Stephen King (IE Mis Mod at SK.com) complained to Ebay, once again that is out of our control.
Nice to see you posted a well presented statement. Hope to see you here often.

But you don't think calling someone a "Greedy Whore" is an attack? And the obvious inference (at least to me if you read all the posts) that someone who read the posts here more than likely reported her to the Mod and started this "remove the listing" campaign was an attack? Also, that if I'm entitled to an opinion (and as it turns out an intested party) allowed to defend anyone I choose?

I'm really not trying to be rude or a smartass, but aren't those fair questions?

Again, I am not questioning the integrity of those who are polite and fair such as yourself and the DT.com Mod but, those who would begin with the name calling and actually take it upon themselves to initiate action against someone who seems to be dependant for their livelihood (to a degree) or, someone who is legitimatley pursuing their own collection, for no other reason than spite, jealousy or "self-righteousness" (I suppose anyone could infer, and totally entitled to their own opinion or interpetation, another motive but IMHO it seemed pretty clear that they were the words to use).

Though I may have chosen the occasional "innappropriate" turn of phrase I believe the overall message I was trying to deliver was fairly clear. And those to whom it was directed, I am fairly certain, know who they are.

Again, my post(s) are directed to those who have taken issue (and stated so in this thread) with this woman's Ebay listing and ONLY those people!!

No offense should be inferred or taken by anyone else or anyone who has not taken a position in this thread as having an issue with the Ebay listing for signed books created by this woman.

I apologize for offending anyone with my opinions that I did not intend to intentionally feel the need to call to task.

Also, I did not say that using the word "Self-Righteous" was innappropriate only that it was not directed at you and a host of others who are fair-minded individuals. I also feel that someone calling someone "self-righteous" is a lesser offense than calling someone.....Ummm......say a "Greedy-Whore". Would you not agree?

Rusher,

Thanks for coming around.

I completely understand where you are coming from. Struggling is no fun. I don't think anyone here had any malicious intent towards you.
Some people are mad that they missed out on getting tickets and then they see you selling the books. Well, emotions got the better of them.

In regards to Ms Mod, someone might have contacted her, or they have their own peps that check out stuff online.
They may not have wanted pre-sales of this book out. For what ever reason, they are really the only people to ask to have it pulled.

Maybe after the signing you can post them for sale. You will still have the money for the oil/wood and someone will still get their book.

Hang out, check out the rest of the site! It's a pretty fun place to be and we really are nice people! :nana:

It minght be better that way anyway since alot of people won't even have an eye out for them until then anyway.

You know, in days gone past, I was considered the greedy whore of the DTNET, and I used to catch quite a bit of flack about it.

When the DT5 Artist Edition came out, I bought several copies from Grant, and presold them on ebay before they were shipped. I recall an email from some a-hole telling me that Grant should take me off their mailing list and sell the books to a true fan.

When Michael Whelan sold 19 remarqued DT7AEs on his website, I bought one and resold it on ebay. Again, I was labeled a greedy whore (in truth I regret selling that one...I had the red ink Crimson King remarque...and as far as I am concerend it was one of the best.)

Now clearly, Rusher is a King/Dark Tower fan (based on her "thrown in the fire on Reaping Day" comment). But even if she was not, it is her perogative to buy tickets and sell the books. I don't care if she needs to put food on the table, or puts the money toward building a swimming pool...it is her right.

Furthermore, if she wants to sell the books BEFORE she gets them, that is her right as well. She clearly states in the auction that the books will be shipped November 7th. It is up to the buyer if he or she wants to make that purchase. In looking over the auction, it does not state that payment is due immediately. For all we know she might be agreeable to having payment sent once she confirms she got the books (although, if it were me, I would at least get a deposit).

I have stated the following argument several times: Without people like her, people who are unable to go to signings (like me) would never be able to get a signed book. As far as I am concerned it is a win-win situation. She makes a few bucks, and some fan/collector gets a signed book. And let's not forget the fact that she will most likely be standing in line for hours. As far as I am concerend she is earning that money.

OK, I am getting off of my soap-box.

Tippy isn't the only one who feels your auction was ok. As I stated earlier I agree almost completely with what you wanted to do. As a fellow "left coaster" I know it sucks to not be able to easily attend a signing.

I was the person who made the "greedy whore" statement. I will admit that I spoke from emotion and not reason, and I apologize for the use of such language.

I do not apoligize for the emotion behind it. I have no problem with someone making a purchase with the intent of making a profit from it, especially someone who is in a financial difficulty. Then again, aren't most of us in a difficult position financially. I had even considered doing something similar, but I decided against it because I didn't want to take away someone else's chance to fulfill a life's dream. I have acquired two additional tickets to the event, but the two tickets are to the reception (I was only able to get tickets to the reading itself) and the books will be going to the person who had the tickets before me. Had it not been for someone's graces, I would not be going to the reception I have so wished to attend. But I will not want to get additional tickets just to get the books to sell because someone else wants to go just like I do, and there are only so many tickets. I do understand (and used to be in this sort of business) but I still feel the way I did before.

I think it is taking someone's chance to see Stephen King and get his signature on a book for their very own. It's not a limited edition (I have several that were bought for resale and one that I will not sell, and they were all bought originally on the secondary market). It's a regular book, but it's a chance to have that little piece, to say "I saw him when he signed this very book. He said '-----' when I told him how much I loved his books. He signed THIS book and I saw it happen. I was there." For some, that doesn't matter. For me, that is everything. All the signed books in the world mean little to me when put next to the book that was signed in front of my eyes. I have books signed by many writers. Ray Bradbury, Joe Haldeman, Connie Willis, Charles Sheffield, Kevin Anderson, Timothy Zahn, Dave Wolverton, Bernard Cornwell, and many others. They were all signed at an event I attended, and I cherish them all. I also have some signed limited editions. I like them, one or two I would not part with, but they are the lesser of my collection (some of which I had to part with in the last year as well due to finances). But selling a book that is unavailable to anyone yet just seems wrong to me. I purchased a copy of a signed limited that has yet to be printed and am reconsidering that purchase right now. I'm not sure I can afford it now (I could when I ordered it, but it hasn't been paid for yet). If I decide not to accept the book, I will find someone to take possession of the book. I just can't see selling my right to the book for more than the book is worth when the publisher hasn't even released it yet. It seems too much like what we have seen before when a publisher releases a book then changes the price because it is a "hot" title (The Stand limited anyone?).

Anyway, that is why I said what I said. It was born of over an hour of constant redialing, not being able to purchase the tickets I had been looking forward to, and simply my view of things. As I said, I do apologize for the language used, but I still think you were wrong for putting the books on ebay so soon after getting the tickets. It is actions like this that lead some authors to not want to do events like this (King is not the only one who has had this sort of thing happen prior to a signing event).

I DO want to say that regardless of what I think, I do support your right to do whatever you wish with the tickets/books you have purchased. That is one of the ideas that run this country. They are your tickets and your books by right of your purchase. You may do what you want with them. Good luck.

You know, I have seen Dean Koontz five different times, and he has had a Hawaiian shirt on every time.

Dean, does Don Ho know that you raided his closet?

Sam

Somewhere, in the darkness, Don Ho is weeping. Not because his closet was raided, but because he has been outshirted by Dean Koontz.

Hi Sam and thank you for the apology. Its no problem, I do realize that you didn't mean it as a personal attack. Im over it...

I can completely understand your reasoning and respect your opinion. I was just told by another much bigger SK collector than myself, that the first books on ebay will probably fetch the most money so that is why I listed them so early. Like I said earlier though....if they don't reach the reserve I will wait awhile before putting them back on. There is plenty of time and waiting a couple weeks is not going to kill me. There was an ARC of Just After Sunset on ebay that ended last night at 566.88 so we will see what happens.

On another note, I have read every single book Dean Koontz has ever written as well. I like Dean Koontz because its a nice fast read and he is a very funny guy without turning a nice scary book into a joke. I have read all of John Sauls books as well. I love that guy too. I have also read most of Richard Laymons and most of Bentley Little too. Of course I have read everything from Stephen King too and some more than once. Im currently in the middle of re-reading the DT series, just finishing up with Wizard and Glass.

Anyway, Thanks very much to everyone that piped up to say they were not offended by my actions, to those who are. I do apologize but I didn't mean to offend. :cowboy:

It's interesting that she differentiates between fans and collectors. Almost all the collectors that I know of are BIG fans, but some of us can't make it to the signings for one reason or another. I'd LOVE to go to a signing, but travelling for any distance is difficult for me, so I have to rely on the "fans" who are willing to part with their items. I don't really have a problem with that!

Agreed John! I am both a fan and collector as well!

I can understand the publisher not wanting the books shipped before the official publication date, but to prevent that they should have scheduled the signing on or after the publication date.

arrrggghhhhh, this is just one big can or worms...see, working for a publisher, I understand where they are coming from. But being a fan as well, I can understand where everyone else is coming from.

And I agree with Tippy, if they didn't want the books out before the publication date, they should have made the event date after that!

My personal opinion is pretty much in line with Ms. Mod's. I think part of the experience is going and getting it yourself. I know that's not always possible but its a big part of it for me.

My wife and I flew from Colorado to DC for the Three Kings and it may be the only opportunity I ever have to see the man. One of the best moments of my life and I will treasure the book for ever. But I'm not really in it to sell my collection so I guess its hard for me to gauge.

It does remind me of something that happens with concerts though. Huge amounts of tickets being sold to cooperation who hand them out as perks. Then you have the first 5 rows of the venue filled with people that aren't exactly fans. I think Billy Joel had a big problem with this.

I understand both sides of the argument, I just wish that people who wanted to go actually see SK--would be able too. Perhaps what Ms. Mod said above is the best way to handle it, make books available to anyone that can pay the price even if they can't come because of extraordinary circumstances.

Hi All, I can also understand things from the publishers perspective, but we are only talking about a few hundred books here, as opposed to the millions that will be in print...especially factoring in the softcovers and whatnot.

On another note, I happen to live in close proximity to the signing but for those who don't live close, buying a book on ebay is still cheaper than airfare and hotels to come to the event themselves. If being at the signing is that important to them then they can certainly pick up the phone, just as I did, and buy tickets. The phone lines were open to everyone and everyone had a chance to call in and buy them. There were still book tickets available days after the Oct. 1st opening, so if someone wanted to come they had more than enough opportunity to call and buy a ticket.

Thirdly...lol....The Odyssey Bookstore specifically said that they would not mail books, which in my opinion is silly and a wasted opportunity for the bookstore to make some extra cash as well. The small flat rate priority boxes are free, and cost 9.80 to mail priority mail. They could have contacted the post office for a large number of boxes and charged callers 15.00 or whatever to have their signed book shipped, making an extra 5.00 off each book. That could have been done also but was not. That would seem like the easiest solution to make sure that all fans and collectors alike had their fair share of being able to obtain a book no matter how far away they live....No ???

I think the whole purpose is of this event was to raise money for a food bank...wasn't it?
And Steve himself sets the limits as to how many books he signs, not the book store.
So even if the book store wanted to make more money, they wouldn't be able to, cause Steve would have to agree to it.

tippy4
10-08-2008, 02:29 PM
You beat me to that answer Karen.

Trust me, if they were allowing unlimited amounts of books to be mailed out, Steve would be there forever. They would sell thousands.

True, but they could have kept the same limits that they currently put in place and still offered to send books to those who live far away. I think I remembered hearing from someone at the bookstore that there was around 900 books...I don't know if that includes the pre-signed ones as well, but they could have kept that same limit and still mailed books out. The extra money made from mailing the books...whether it be an extra 5 or 10 dollars, could also have been donated to the food bank as well. If half of those 900 books were sold to people who needed them mailed and they charge 20 for mailing...making an extra 10 per book, that would be an extra 4500 for the food bank right there and Stephen King would still be signing the same amount of books.

I brought this whole thing up to the moderator on King's bulletin board and this is what she said:

I can't speak for each venue but my guess is that one such as this would have tried to make arrangements to have the book sent to anyone who could not travel to an event due to exceptional circumstances. I also did not mean to imply that all collectors are merely book sellers out to make a buck.

If a bookseller, any seller, was to do something like that there would be "collectors" that would buy up many of the books. I can imagine someone buying ten or twenty of the books, maybe even more, and then turning right around and selling them all on ebay. I know for fact that some book dealers would jump at an opportunity like this. The chance to buy King signed books and never even leave your house with no premium. Plus it gets to you before the release date! Yeah, I'd be able to get a copy for myself, if I was REALLY lucky and got there before the first 20 dealers. <_<

Hi Sam...I didn't think of it that way. Your absolutely right about that. When you call for the tickets there was a limit you could buy. I'm sure that there is something they could arrange to handle that. I was only trying to throw out suggestions and thoughts. Maybe they could limit sent books to one book per person , per credit card number. So someone could only order one book and they couldn't call back and use their credit card to do it again because the computer would reject the second purchase because of the identical credit card number....something along those lines. I was just trying to think of an easier way to get books to people who can't make signings. I don't know all the answers....lol, just thinking out loud

This is a bookstore with probably a dozen employees. The charity and the bookstore will make plenty of money without aggravating themselves by shipping books out to people, worrying if they arrive, dealing with complaints when they show up damaged.

The way they are doing it is the best. Buy a ticket, hand the ticket to somebody, get a signed book...if you have a second ticket, then repeat the process...maybe SK signs it personally, maybe it's presigned.

The bookstore doesn't need to concern themselves with the travel plans and abilities of everybody. If you're there, you get a book; if not, deal with it another way.

All three auctions have been ended:

The seller ended this listing early because of an error in the listing.

This item or one like it has been relisted.

It looks like she cancelled the auctions and started new ones being very clear that they would be shipping on the release date instead of the date of the signing (there's verbiage to that effect in the new ones). Sounds like she had a win/win convo with Ms. Mod. :D

Hi Guys, Yes, I sent a private message to Ms.Mod this morning explaining that I wanted to try to make things right ( or at least a little better ) and apologized for all the controversy that I caused. I asked if this solution would be acceptable and she said yes. I had to end the listings instead of just changing the delivery date because it would have been outside Ebays 30 day window.

So I re-listed them and stated that they would be mailed out on the morning of Nov. 11th instead. I know this isn't going to make everyone happy but I hope that it at least makes some people feel a little better.

Then I got bombarded with emails from people asking why I did that, so I had to write a bit of an explanation.

Thanks

It is just a very little over a week before the reading in South Hadley. First, I am soooo looking forward to this that I am already, literally, dreaming about this. This will be the fulfillment of a lifelong dream for me and is something that I never thought I would be able to do. Next to my wedding day, this has the potential of being the single best day of my life.

Anyway, who else is going? Whether you will be at the reception or the reading, who's going to be there? I'm there and am getting to go to the reception.:excited::excited::excited::excited:

Contact The Odyssey Bookshop http://www.odysseybks.com/kingrusso.html#purchasing for more information, but be aware that they are long since sold out of book tickets that grant you a copy of Just After Sunset and a place in line for the signing. Check out the website anyway because there are still tickets to the reading.
