I don't remember it being mentioned, but whenever I listen/read Wolves there is a part in there where Eddie gets back into the New York groove. Maybe an honorable mention to Ace Frehley for his tune Back In The New York Groove? I'm probably dating myself here with this one though :D

I think my favorite in the entire series was Hurt- both NIN and Cash versions.
It was the one song going through my head when all of the events took place, especially when the fight with Morded was over.

And I thought the title was Man of Constant Sorrow, like in O Brother, Where Art Thou? and just changed a few words for Susannah.

Anyway guys... which is your favourite song from the series?

I actually heard the song Bad Company the other day and went WOW!!!! that should be the theme song for the series!!! It's also one of my all time classic favorites too.

Company Always on the run
Destiny is the rising sun
Oh I was born 6-gun in my hand
Behind a gun I'll make my final stand
That's why they call me Bad company
And I can't deny
Bad company
Till the day I die

Yes, it's an amazing song. Ready For Love, which is on the same album is also awesome and again could have been written about Roland.

This one would be neat:

Oh, Susannah
Traditional Traditional Lyrics and the California Gold Rush Adaptation

Listen to Phil Rosenthal perform Stephen Foster's traditional lyrics.

This song is available on Phil Rosenthal's The Green Grass Grew All Around: Family Folk Songs.

Listen to Judy Caplan Ginsburgh and David Marler perform the "Forty-Niners" adaptation.

This song is available on Judy Caplan Ginsburgh's Musical America.

Stephen Foster wrote the original lyrics in 1847.

I come from Alabama
With my banjo on my knee
I'm going to Louisiana,
My true love for to see

It rained all night
The day I left
The weather it was dry
The sun so hot,
I froze to death
Susanna, don't you cry

Oh, Susanna,
Oh don't you cry for me
For I come from Alabama
With my banjo on my knee

I had a dream the other night
When everything was still
I thought I saw Susanna
A-coming down the hill

The buckwheat cake
Was in her mouth
The tear was
In her eye
Says I, I'm coming from the south
Susanna, don't you cry

Oh, Susanna,
Oh don't you cry for me
For I come from Alabama
With my banjo on my knee

"Oh Susannah" was set with new lyrics and became known as the "forty-niners" theme song. This version was sung by miners during the California Gold Rush.

I came from Salem City
with my washpan on my knee
I'm going to California,
the gold dust for to see.

It rained all night the day I left,
the weather it was dry
The sun so hot I froze to death,
Oh, brothers don't you cry.

Oh, Susannah, Oh, don't you cry for me
I'm going to California with my washpan on my knee.

I soon shall be in Frisco
and there I'll look around.
And when I see the gold lumps there,
I'll pick them off the ground.

I'll scrape the mountains clean, my boys,
I'll drain the rivers dry.
A pocketful of rocks bring home,
So, brothers don't you cry.

This song is available on Phil Rosenthal's The Green Grass Grew All Around: Family Folk Songs.

This song is available on Judy Caplan Ginsburgh's Musical America.

"Forty-niners" lyrics courtesy of Judy Caplan Ginsburgh.

When reading the books you don't realize how many songs get mention. I remember Creedence Clearwater Revival getting a mention but not sure if any songs were included. Anyone?
Bad Company's self titled song gets my vote with Paint It Black by the Stones a close second.
Pity SK couldn't included a CD of the songs mentioned in the books like John Connolly did with one of his books The Black Angel.

My favorite has gotta be Hurt. But I do prefer the(Man in Black) Johnny Cash version over NIN for anything DT related. It's not actually in the series, but I always imagine Cash' rendition of "God's gonna cut you down" as a DT song as well

Blind Guardian singer and Iced Earth guitarist cooperation band (awkward way to put it, I know!) Demons & Wizards has got a whole CD about The Dark Tower. I can barely believe it. One of the few bands I like (two of them, in fact!) have made a third band. And that band has actually made a CD about the Tower. When I first understood this I was like :scared: then I got the CD and was like :excited:

The CD is called Touched By The Crimson King!

Here are what the songs reference:

"Crimson King" is a reference the Crimson King, the main antagonist of the series. However, the song itself seems to be about Randall Flagg, one of the King's many servants.

"The Gunslinger" is referring to Roland of Gilead, the protagonist of the piece. The song refers mainly to the plot of the final book of the series with subtle allusions to the fifth book throughout (e.g., 'come-commala', 'say thankya').

"Terror Train" is a reference to Blaine the Mono, from the third and fourth novels of the series.

"Beneath These Waves" was directly inspired by Moby-Dick and one's man struggle with nature and which ties in with repeated references in the Dark Tower novels drawing parallels between Roland of Gilead and Captain Ahab.

"Wicked Witch" is Kürsch's interesting interpretation of the Wizard of Oz, which is also referenced in the fourth novel, Wizard and Glass. It is also a reference to the evil witch, Rhea of the Cöos.

"Dorian" was inspired by Oscar Wilde's novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, which again bears some relation to the character of Roland of Gilead.

"Seize The Day" details some of the tests and hardships that Roland of Gilead faces on his way to The Dark Tower, such as him reaching the western shore, and also his drifting personality that causes him to be constantly on the move. Another interpretation of this song, perhaps intentionally ambiguous, is that it talks about the hobbits Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee, from The Lord of the Rings. It actually includes quotes from the story, such as "The road goes on and on", originally spoken by Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit.

"Down Where I Am" is about Roland Deschain's son, Mordred Deschain

"Love's Tragedy Asunder" is a reference to the fourth book, where Roland loses his true love, Susan Delgado.

"Lunar Lament" is a reference to an obsession of Roland's, where someone is trying to reach the sun, as Roland reaches for the Tower.

"Immigrant Song" is originally by Led Zeppelin but still consists with another of this albums major theme of The Dark Tower and Roland's journey (' our only goal will be the western shore')

Just listening to this and understanding what it's all about is awesome.

Feel free to post any other songs/albums that are inspired by The Dark Tower.

I've got both of Demons & Wizards albums, I think there are a few DT references in the first self-titles album but cant quote them at the moment. I think 'Fiddler on the Green' might be about Susan and her death.

They're an awesome band, shame they dont tour :( Also a shame they hav'nt done another album yet!

Led Zep wrote a lot of Lord of the Rings, not Dark Tower. Sorry. Though I'm pretty sure Immigrant Song is about vikings, anyway.

While it may not originally be about The Dark Tower, it still sort of matches. "our only goal will be the western shore" is a great example.

As i mentioned in my interductory first message, i play guitar and write songs in a band and we are obssesed with Stephen King. We only have one song though which is specifically aimed at The Dark Tower books. The song is called Ruby and it is a tribute to Roland and Susan's relationship in The Wizard and Glass. I wont write out the lyrics here, but it is basically about two lovers taking a chance when the stakes are high and potenially dangerous. Knowing that even a short time together is better than never experiencing it all. Anyways i would be stoked if you guys could check out the song for yourselves and let me know what you think of it.

The song is called Ruby and you can find it here www.myspace.com/thegaslamp

YouTube - Coldplay - Viva La Vida - Official Music Video

just watch. Coldplay however did make an alternate version. Thought it was interesting, because I just watched this a couple of minutes ago. I tried to search, I hope this wasn't posted anywhere and I didn't know where to post this thread!

lots of things are interesting about this video, like:
the rose

and the lyrics themselves:

the old king is dead, long live the king
one minute I held the key, next the walls were closed on me...

talking about the ringing of bells and ruling the world... and castles

anyways. haha this probably really lame! I also haven't finished the series, I'm in the middle of Susannah's Song.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Perhaps to say I imagine the substitution of ka for god...

Uriah Heep was a great band back in the early 70s. I've often thought that their album Demons & Wizards (and some tracks on Look At Yourself) were absolutely perfect tie-ins to TDT. If you're too young to remember them, you should check them out. I've always wondered if SK was a fan. :D

I'm a huge bob dylan fan and a tower junkie so when i heard this song I flipped, it totally sounds like Dylans' song Aint talkin, off of modern times from 06 is based on The Dark Tower
Tell me what u think here r the lyrics

Bob Dylan: Aint Talkin

As I walked out tonight in the mystic garden
The wounded flowers were dangling from the vine
I was passing by yon cool crystal fountain
Someone hit me from behind

Ain't talking, just walking
Through this weary world of woe
Heart burning, still yearning
No one on earth would ever know

They say prayer has the power to heal
So pray for me, mother
In the human heart an evil spirit can dwell
I am trying to love my neighbor and do good unto others
But oh, mother, things ain't going well

Ain't talking, just walking
I'll burn that bridge before you can cross
Heart burning, still yearning
There'll be no mercy for you once you've lost

Now I'm all worn down by weeping
My eyes are filled with tears, my lips are dry
If I catch my opponents ever sleeping
I'll just slaughter them where they lie

Ain't talking, just walking
Through the world mysterious and vague
Heart burning, still yearning
Walking through the cities of the plague.

Well, the whole world is filled with speculation
The whole wide world which people say is round
They will tear your mind away from contemplation
They will jump on your misfortune when you're down

Ain't talking, just walking
Eating hog eyed grease in a hog eyed town.
Heart burning, still yearning
Some day you'll be glad to have me around.

They will crush you with wealth and power
Every waking moment you could crack
I'll make the most of one last extra hour
I'll revenge my father's death then I'll step back

Ain't talking, just walking
Hand me down my walking cane.
Heart burning, still yearning
Got to get you out of my miserable brain.

All my loyal and my much-loved companions
They approve of me and share my code
I practice a faith that's been long abandoned
Ain't no altars on this long and lonesome road

Ain't talking, just walking
My mule is sick, my horse is blind.
Heart burning, still yearning
Thinking about that girl I left behind.

Well, it's bright in the heavens and the wheels are flying
Fame and honor never seem to fade
The fire gone out but the light is never dying
Who says I can't get heavenly aid?

Ain't talking, just walking
Carrying a dead man's shield
Heart burning, still yearning
Walking with an ache in my heel

The suffering is unending
Every nook and cranny has its tears
I'm not playing, I'm not pretending
I'm not nursing any superfluous fears

Ain't talking, just walking
Walking ever since the other night.
Heart burning, still yearning
Walking until I'm clean out of sight.

As I walked out in the mystic garden
On a hot summer day, a hot summer lawn
Excuse me, ma'am, I beg your pardon
There's no one here, the gardener is gone

Ain't talking, just walking
Up the road, around the bend.
Heart burning, still yearning
In the last outback at the world's end.

"Carry the Blessed Home" by Blind Guardian:

Pale faced the innocent
Will drown in blood
Hurt and withdrawn
Don't dare to steal my grief
In this haze of green and gold
He's gone
Blind my eyes
And I still
Can see through the mist
To the very end
There I'll face
What I fear the most

Blind my eyes ...
But it all doesn't matter
Right now
I will bury my dead
And keep on
Til the end
I won't give up
I won't give up
I'll turn
To the "red fields of none"
There's a grave
There's a rose
Drift away
I can hear me say
Soon you all shall be free

Carry the blessed home
No one's left here but me
And I will sing out your name
You call me insane, I know
I've opened my heart
And my soul to you son
So pale turns the innocent
And all I feel is pain
Suddenly I understand
He's gone
Blind my eyes
And I still
Can see through the mist
To the very end
There I'll face
What I fear the most
Blind my eyes
But it all doesn't matter
Right now

But it all doesn't matter
Right now

Carry the blessed home
No one's left here but me
And I will sing out your name
Driven insane?
No
What I feared the most
I have faced and that's truth
The grey faced is not innocent
Though I cry in dismay
I will follow decay
I'll move on
Is there anyone here
Who knows
How it feels to be wrong?

Blind my eyes
And I still
Can see through the mist
To there very end
There I'll face
What I fear the most
Blind my eyes ...
But it all doesn't matter
Right now

But it all doesn't matter
Right now

Matter right now
Matter right now

I've read somewhere (wikipedia, I guess) that the beginning of the Guns N'Roses' video "Don't cry" is inspired by The Gunslinger, as you can see a raven and Axl Rose wearing that cape and holding a gun. I think it might just be a coincidence, what do you say?

I'm awake so
You better feed me now
I won't slow down
Once we have left this town
Rhymes and riddles
I'm still sleepy so
You must hurry
Please take your seats
You'll stay with me
Be with me
I'll be with you
I'll be with you

No one really knows the pain I'm going through
My final ride is almost done
The world has moved on now it's time to go
My final ride is almost done

Come lift my spirit up, I'm Blaine!
Come lift my spirit up, I'm Blaine!

I am nothing
But at train and
I assume that you don't like me
I'm insane but
Not yet crazy
I will never let you go
Enjoy the ride you'll stay with me
Stay with me
I'll stay with you
I'll stay with you

No one really knows the pain I'm going through
My final ride is almost done
The world has moved on now it's time to go
My final ride is almost done

Come lift my spirit up, I'm Blaine!
Come lift my spirit up, I'm Blaine!

I am the one I am the one
The godlike terror train
The superior, artificial brain
Feel free to call me Blaine

I will roll on
Riddle de-dum, I'm best
Try me, try me,
I'll never fail that test
Blue's for girls and
Pink's for me
Cause
I'm the mono
Don't even dare to mess with me

No one really knows the pain I'm going through
My hate will last forevermore
The world has moved on now it's time to go
My hate will last forevermore

Come lift my spirit up, I'm Blaine!
Come lift my spirit up, I'm Blaine!

Anthrax has a song about Randall Flagg called "Among the Living"
Opening lyrics:

Disease, Disease
Spreading the disease
With some help from Captain Trips
He'll bring the world down to his knees
Power, yes Power
He'll show them all his power
It pulses through his ice cold blood
A whole world to devour

Anthrax have a lot of songs regarding DT and other SK books, such as "Among the living" and "Lone Justice".

Also, I have a band and I write lots of lyrics that have a connection to DT -
www.myspace.com/anomalythrash
There's only one song on our myspace that regards DT, the song is called Anomaly - It's kind of a mix between some of the dark tower story and "S.T.A.L.K.E.R" - a book that was turned into a very successful video game. Hope ya like what you hear
We do have many other songs regarding DT, but they're not recorded :P

I've been searching for bands (more so in the genre of metal) inspired by The Dark Tower over the last few years. As mentioned above, the band Demons and Wizards comprised of members
from Blind Guardian and Iced Earth have one of the most directly related albums. Blind Guardian alone have songs inspired by various Stephen King stories spread across a few of their
releases. Nightwish has a song "Seven days to the wolves" about The Wolves of the Calla. Also the band Savage Circus who recently released an album called
"Of Doom and Death" with a Dark Tower inspired cover and a song called "Ballad of Susan". That's about all I've found over the years. If anyone finds any other bands I'd love to know.

I doubt this song was exactly inspired by DK, but it always reminds me of Roland. This guy Ian Thomas is amazing and haunting, and his live performances are killer.

Here's the link to his song "Halfway Gone," my top favorite song of his. :) Enjoy

Somewhere Far Beyond by Blind Guardian

I came from far
Beyond your reality
The ocean of time
It's the odyssey of mine
I am the narrator
And now I'll tell you
Where I've been
And what I saw
And how it ends

Welcome to the wasteland
In a world that's turning faster
Where I'm alone for a while

It's turning faster
Away from light straight to the dark
The march of time it has begun
I'm caught in an ancient dream so bright
And then the march of time begins

The man in black he waits
Behind this last task
It's full of pain
To sacrifice the only son
The legions of the lost
Wait in the old mine
They try to stop me
The battle it has begun

So I'm not afraid
To walk down the wasteland
I'm so alone on my way
And I don't fear that dusty godforsaken path
Somewhere far beyond

Somewhere far beyond
The march of time it has begun
Somewhere far beyond your reality
And then the march of time begins

Look at my soul
And behind
There are some thins
I've to hide from you
I'm following the black man
I'm losing control
And I don't care
What's happening to the boy

Welcome to a new world
One more step to the dark tower
And my whole body's in flames
I'm looking for
Those healing things to be prepared
The march of time it has begun
I'm caught in a prisoner's dirty life
And then the march of time begins

The prisoner did bring the healing spell
The queen of shadows found herself in pain
And death brings answers to us all

What will I find
When the dark tower appears
Will it be the end
Or just a new quest after all
I am the narrator
And now I'll tell you
Where I'd been
And what I saw
And how it ends

Somewhere far beyond
The march of time it has begun
Somewhere far beyond your reality
And then the march of time...
Somewhere far beyond
The march of time it has begun
Somewhere far beyond your reality
And then the march of time begins

Look around and see
The world is turning fast
Faster day by day
Somewhere far beyond
I'll try to change it
If I can - Somewhere far beyond
There's only one chance
And it lies - Somewhere far beyond
Somewhere far beyond
The march of time it has begun
The march of time it has begun
