View Full Version : Gender in the postbit?

Matt
06-27-2008, 07:41 AM
This is just a poll to guage opinion. Not sure if I'm going to do it yet.

A very simple modification could be placed on the site to identify gender in the post bit and profile.

<---that space is the postbit.

So what do you think? It will just be the little symbols in pink or blue. You know, the circle with the plus and the one with the arrow.

What do you think?

Ricky
06-27-2008, 08:09 AM
I voted yes because it's always nice to know who you're talking to. With usernames that don't really identify the person's gender, it's hard to determine.

Am I the only one who was reminded of the Color Me Badd song "I Wanna Sex You Up" after that? ^

I think the gender selection would be good,..but some people will choose to not answer it anyway.
But, I vote yes.

Is the why your mood is 'frazzled'?

I jumped into the landslide that is yes. I'll have to find a bigger avatar I suppose.

I replied no.

Mostly, I worry about lurkers who may not be part of our community here (folks we trust) and that makes me a tad nervous. We do have some underaged members, right?

I am probably being overly cautious, but there's a reason the internet has a creepy kind of underside reputation sometimes.

If you read enough posts or interact enough, the gender gets figured out anyway.

I guess what I was thinking is : if you have someone who is creepy, looking specifically for a boy/girl - we'd just be helping them out.

Matt
06-27-2008, 11:26 AM
That's true I guess. But I would assume anyone visiting the site would know that there was boys and girls here.

The cool part about this (as someone mentioned) is you don't have to choose it in your profile if you don't want to. I could make it mandatory, but I won't.

Well I sure hope NOT, but who the heck knows how sex offenders find their victims.

I think I'm just being overly causious, like I said.

As Matt indicated, you can always chose not to indicate.

as i understand this: you are talking about putting a gender option in the profile section. but it would be optional. the user could decide not to select an option, just as we decide whether or not to include our birthday/age in our visible profile.

do i have this correct? i want to make sure before i vote.

I voted yes because I simply don't care one way or another. If it is an option that is available to us, even better. Then you have both worlds. Those who want to tell others their gender can and those who don't will receive a Marilyn Manson icon to further segregate them from the rest of humanity.

The male/female symbols? They are Mars and Venus. Mars for masculine and Venus for feminine. Originally (to my knowledge) they were taken from astrology.

Or did you mean the pirates and ninjas?

isn't the word "gender" superfluous? it clutters the profile, and doesn't seem necessary

also... do they have to be blue???

Matt
07-01-2008, 04:39 AM
The word gender is part of the html but I can try to figure out how to get it out.

The image itself is canned so I would be happy to make it a different color if someone could create one (or find one) to replace it.

Blue seems like the accepted norm for "male".

Jean
07-01-2008, 04:42 AM
it's not only that I hate this color... but also that in some languages, including Russian, "blue" is a synonym for "gay", which, while is in no way objectionable by itself, doesn't really stand for virility, and since our site is international, maybe we should try to avoid any misunderstanding.

what format should the image be? I'll be happy to look for something

Matt
07-01-2008, 04:43 AM
Makes perfect sense, I'm not an "image" guy so I just have to take what is available.

I'd be open and happy for alternatives though

Jean
07-01-2008, 04:51 AM
I could make this one smaller, and maybe try to convert into a different format, if necessary. It's about the same color as what we mainly use here, so won't stick out much

Yeah, and lots of girls hate pink, too, so if Jean could maybe find a female symbol that matches the male one he just offered, that'd be awesome.

Ruthful
07-01-2008, 05:48 AM
It's funny, because the only place where I've seen the gender part of the profile as part of an avatar display is on The New York Giants message board. I suppose they have it on other forums though, I just haven't seen it elsewhere.

Matt
07-01-2008, 06:12 AM
It was a hell of a thing to get in there--huge template edits.

I'll see what I can do.

Perhaps it would just be better without? Seems like folks wanted it but once it gets on, maybe not as nice as we thought.

Rjeso
07-01-2008, 06:15 AM
I've seen it around on other boards. It is helpful in figuring out who you're talking to, it definitely makes some things less confusing.

I say if the image edits are too difficult, don't bother and I can deal with pink. If it's an easy host-it-and-post-it mod, it'd be nice to have the brownish-colored symbols.

Jean
07-01-2008, 06:18 AM
I think the same. Brownish would fit in with our style, while pink/blue clashes with it. If the male symbol I made can be fit in, I'll make the female one, too, as soon as I have some time (it's not very difficult); or maybe someone who is more proficient in that than I am could make better looking ones, that would be great!

Matt
07-01-2008, 06:25 AM
I can replace the images and I have no problem if we find something that fits the site better, they don't even have to be traditional symbols.

We could use the ones on public restrooms if we wanted.

I just need someone to come up with something good, size it and post it here. Mostly I just don't want to have to keep redoing it.

only someone will have to provide clear guidelines first, mostly about the acceptable formats

Matt
07-01-2008, 06:36 AM
That would be fine with me. We'll leave what is there for now until we work it out.

People can get an idea of how small it has to be from the example that is there. It can be a .jpg or .gif--both are acceptable.
