This is a StarWars thread and I will give my impression.

I actually went to see the first one with my parents back in '77. It was all the rage then, for kids and adults and I am pretty sure it's because all the adults were on drugs.

When ESB came out we literally rushed to the theater to see in and were shocked at the ending.

RotJ came next and I remember being old enough to think the ewoks were kind of stupid but the effects were amazing. Even before they added the universe celebrating in a re release, I remember thinking every thing was fine now and there would be peace.

Then we hit the new century. And a new set of movies came out. At first, the idea that they would tell the beginning of the story was amazing to me, then I bought a ticket. <_<

I think George took the greatest villain in the history of the universe and turned him into a whiny baby that can't get what he wants and decides to just take it. By the end, I wanted them to knife the boy an save everyone a bunch of trouble. It just got worse from there imo.

The only hope? I think Lucas could do a lot with three more movies. Let someone else direct them and get Ford, Hammel and Fisher to come back as the old guard. A generation of peace and now the Sith are back.

Of course, cool a-list young actors to play the new Jedi's

They could also adapt a story arc from the enormous amount of books out there. They are all written on the timeline set by the films, and the books that take place in the latest time frame feature a new Jedi Academy headed by Luke.

Also....

Anakin was/is a whiner. Honestly, I really can't wrap my mind around Vader and Anakin being the same person...I mean, I KNOW they are, but I didn't need to feel sorry for Vader, ROTJ did enough of that.

But I always thought Luke was kinda of a whiner too. Guess he got that from his daddy.

I did, it looks great but I don't have quite enough time to read through it at the moment.

I do love Star Wars talk though--I'd never build a fan site for it but its interesting.

If that's the time period they're covering in the series, wouldn't it be an incredibly boring show?

I am a huge Star Wars fan. I didn't care much for the first two prequels, but I think episode 3 was actually pretty good, minus the lame Vader scream at the end.

If there were movies made based on the New Jedi Order books and the Yuuzhan Vong war, I'd be a happy camper. Han, Leia and Luke are old enough in the books now that they could even have the original actors play them, and get some new talents for the Solo children and Ben Skywalker. Lucas is horrible for not counting all of the EU stuff as cannon, though(like the origins of the Death Star....it was made in the Maw Cluster at the secret ors of Gran Moff Tarkin, and the Trade Federation had nothing to do with it, damnit). He should really just listen to the EU authors, because they are way better writers than he is.

A while back, there was a news report taht Lucas made everyone at Skywalker ranch sign NDAs regaring future movies, so we may end up seeing more. In the end, even if they do sort of suck, they are still Star Wars. so I'm pretty ok with it.

There was actually a lot going on during that time period. The empire was rather violently solidifying its hold on the galaxy and the remaining jedi were working on trying to escape and hide from Vader's purge. I am sure there is the possibility of a lot of background story that we don't completely know at this point.

Ok, here's what I think. (beware of random thoughts and no flow)

Vader still is the most bad ass villian in history. I love the entire saga! I f*cking hate Jar Jar Binks and TPM is without question the worst movie of the six. George should not have directed those prequel movies, he's horrible at dialouge and at the art of directing.
Luke was/is a pussy (but I still loved him), so it makes sense that his dad grew up as one too, imo. ROTS is my favorite of them all because that fight scene was absolutely kickass. I think Anakin's fall was cool and even though HC isn't the greatest actor, I thought he grew from E2 to E3. The final Obi-Vader scene when Obi was screaming/pleading at him while Vader was crawling on the ground was a fantastic scene. ObiWan is a fricking pimp, by far the coolest character of the whole saga. The Vader "NOOOOO!" was not really cool but I think there were other lines that were worse. I think that line would probably been edited out if I had been in charge.
Those are my random thoughts, perhaps I will expand on them at another time. Star Wars remains my favorite movie/saga as The Dark Tower is my favorite book/saga. :)

Matt

I think they should have sent Obi Wan to fight Palpatine in the end. He would not have punked out like Yoda did <_<

The little green guy told him they "could not fail" and then went and did just that. Hurt his little leg and ran.

Spider-Man would have gone out the sewer and returned through the window for more kickass.

MonteGss

Damn Matt, those are fightin words about Yoda. (even though, i agree, obiwan wouldn't have quit...but would have died fighting)

Yoda just realized that wasn't the time. :)

Matt
05-23-2007, 10:46 AM
pfft--I didn't want to say it but I had to. He gave up and ran away like a little chicken.

That last conversation between him and Obi was all about how they "could not fail". Can you imagine if Obi would have left like that, before the job was done?

It was a huge disappointment to me.

They should get Gerard Butler (Leonidas) to play one of the Sith, only this time he'll scream:

Odetta
05-23-2007, 11:26 AM
Oh, where do I begin?

BTW Monte, Star Wars 1 wasn't the worst... Star Wars 2 was the worst by a long shot.

I remember when Star Wars 4 came out... I actually saw it with my family at the Drive-In. My favorite of the 6 was Empire... the cliffhanger at the end drove me crazy, having to wait for Jedi to come out 2 years later was excruciating.

After seeing the new ones, I like the concept that the whole Star Wars story is really about the fall of the major character, his tyranny, then his salvation at the end. The Anakin/Vader character on paper is the perfect character.

Where Lucas screwed up was in the CASTING of Anakin. TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE acting... I had no feelings for ANY of the characters in episodes 1-3 (except Obi-Wan) which made it difficult to care. Opposingly, I DID care about the characters in episodes 4-6. Anakin was whiny and annoying, and Padme (sp), rather than being a strong female role (like Leia)... became wimpy.

In episode 3, my favorite part was when we hear Anakin breathe for the first time as Vader.

fernandito

My favorite episode from III was the fight between Obi Wan and Anakin/Vader, it was just orgasmic.

Odetta
05-25-2007, 06:27 AM
It was too... how should I say?... too computer generated. I spent more time thinking about the graphics than watching the scene. THAT, to me, is too computer generated.

as a comparison, the fight scenes in the Lord of the Rings movies seemed more realistic and less "computer-y".
I like when I can pretend that it's really happening... I just couldn't do it with Yoda bouncing around like a ping pong ball.

Wow, not in the theatres I went to. Everyone was cheering each time I went to see the movie.

Nerf herder doesn't really sound retarded or lack sense when you know the Star Wars lore behind it, which I explained above.

I know a lot of Star Wars lore. I was huge into Star Wars for years when I was younger. I had books, the Star Wars Insider Magazine. Had books on the weapons, ships etc of Star Wars equipped with cross-sections and no mention of a Nerf. Hasn't been explained in any of the movies I've seen or the games I've played. Where does one learn what a nerf is (wiki doesn't count). I'd like to learn how Nerfs (let alone their herders) are categorized in the Star Wars universe.

So I was wrong about Nerf Herder (still stand by nerve hurter as it isn't stupid) but the Boba Fett line? He said only a few lines and they mess up his best one? Boba Fett is the shit. It's one thing to make a mistake on my end (when I have no clue what a Nerf Herder is) besides getting a simple, six word sentence completely wrong.

I'll sick my womprats on you.

Wow, you are a crazy nerd. I love Star Wars as much as the next person. But what you're really saying is you need to be obsessed with Star Wars, read the books, the alien speices book, the comics and the role playing game to know what it is. If you're telling me you knew it from the movie itself (with no actual mention of what a Nerf is, in the movie) then you're lying. I read the Han Solo books when I was about 12 so a little mention of Nerf steaks won't stick in my mind.

I also never said 'there was no mention besides one line in a movie' but I said I never came across it in all my Star Wars related readings, I read quite a bit. You went out of your way to find a the few things that mention a nerf only hardcore Star Wars nerds will know about.

as for 'sic'
American Heritage Dictionary - Cite This Source sic 2 also sick (sĭk) Pronunciation Key
tr.v. sicced also sicked, sic·cing also sick·ing, sics also sicks

To set upon; attack.
To urge or incite to hostile action; set: sicced the dogs on the intruders.

sick is a perfectly reasonable substitute for sic.

WordNet - Cite This Source sic

adverb
1. intentionally so written (used after a printed word or phrase)

verb
1. urge to attack someone; "The owner sicked his dogs on the intruders"; "the shaman sics sorcerers on the evil spirits"

Dictionary.com Unabridged (v 1.1) - Cite This Source
nerve /nɜrv/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[nurv] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation noun, verb, nerved, nerv·ing.
–noun 1. one or more bundles of fibers forming part of a system that conveys impulses of sensation, motion, etc., between the brain or spinal cord and other parts of the body.

Nerves allow us to feel sensations, whether good or bad. Pain is detected by nerves by the Central Nervous System. 'Nerve hurter' would mean 'one who causes pain'. Leia is angry while saying it. It's not hard to assume, to those who aren't obsessed with Star Wars, that is what she means. Hurting her feelings, so to speak. How does that NOT make sense?

Watch Empire with my captioning on? I'm not denying 'Nerf-herder' is the actual phrase used in the movie. I'm just saying it's extremely, extremely stupid sounding.

Also, if you know that much about a fake world I think you have a bit too much time on your hands...

You post as if I am stupid. Correcting words on me (which wasn't incorrect). Worst yet, you and OChrisO thought I didn't believe those were the words. Perhaps, instead of trying to prove your Star Wars nerd superiority you should learn things that apply to real life.

I could go on and on and on but in the interest of brevity I will not.

Nerve Hurter, I'd sick my womprats on you but you're no good to me dead.

And you showed me nerd books that a nerd would have to read to know what a nerf is. Perhaps you were forunate to learn what a nerf was when you were tiny. I knew the multiplication table and long division and could read and write when I was 4. In the future those little facts don't mean much.

The fact you went and looked for those things shows that you're trying to prove something? You want me to say you know more about Star Wars than me? YOU KNOW MORE ABOUT STAR WARS THAN ME. Happy now?

You still didn't answer how someone who no prior knowledge to what a Nerf Herder is would understand it. I see Nerf I see this.

http://www.firetoys.co.uk/juggling/pocket_nerf_howler.jpg

Nerf Herder is someone who herds soft, cushy footballs. It doesn't matter what a Nerf is or if it's been printed before. The fact is that it is a stupid, stupid phrase. NERF HERDER. This is why I hate science fiction and fantasy. There are stupid names for stupid creatures/people and people get far too into and try and learn it all. It's like when I said Roland would destroy Harry Potter on .net and I started getting told about summoning charms and special spells and wands and I just walked away.

I'm still amazed that I read 'nerve hurter' makes no sense. And Nerf Herder does lol. Ridiculous.

I would take the best, but I think I'd be severely pissed if I didn't end up with Obi-Wan :)

Obi-Wan is the pimp of the universe. I wish I scored Obi...

So, my wife only watched the movies cuz of me, but that's ok, she enjoyed them. She even went out and bought an old-school storm trooper t-shirt at a thrift store so she could wear it to the midnight showing of Ep2 (and 3). When we were leaving the theatre after Revenge, she says to me "Obi-Wan is so noble." I love that girl....:)

I do believe you were the one starting to rip on me for not knowing what a 'nerf herder' was, as if it was common fucking knowledge. You just had to go out of your way to show that I was wrong. I didn't ask. YOU TOLD ME. "YOU ARE WRONG! LOOK AT WIKI TO FIND OUT WHAT A NERF IS YOU RETARD!" is what you essentially said.

Monte, she started on me for a simple mistake on not having read the encyclopedia with Nerf in it. Considering that Nerf Herder could be easily confused with nerve hurter as they sound almost the same.

um, no. it's nerf herder. i have never heard anyone say nerve hurter before.

If you're telling me this is not riddled with condescending tones (especially the way she linked Wiki) when she could have easily said 'hey, a nerf herder is like a cow in the star wars universe' I would've been cool.

sarajean, what point are you trying to prove? That Nerfs are ficticious space cows. If that is the point then you missed the point.

OchrisO
08-27-2007, 04:34 PM
I wasn't ripping on you so much for not knowing what a nerf herder was as for looking down on the LG guys for their lack of star wars knowledge while you had a big gaping hole in yours. *shrug*

It is fine to not know everything about Star Wars. I don't even claim to know everything about Star Wars. It is a different matter all together when you put people down for misquoting something and then get all defensive when you are called out for being wrong about something yourself. The LG people could make much the same argument as you by saying "I"M NOT A HUGE NERD THAT WATCHES STAR WARS AND MEMORIZES EVERYLINE. I DON'T LIVE IN LUCAS' HEAD!!!one!"

Mattrick

Why are trying to defend a website? Are they your friends? Just wondering. Are they seeing this post? Are they offended and crying? If not, why are you even bothering. Just wondering.

I got told in a PM 'obviously you don't know her well enough to know she is being silly' well obviously none of you know me well enough to know that I was fucking around in that first post. I was more irritated that they screwed up Boba Fett's line as he is the most badass mofo around. Like I said, I saw Nerf Herder and pictured a guy herding Nerf Balls and made a comment. I talked to a friend of mine who is older and has loved star wars longer than me by about fifteen years. He said he never knew it was Nerf Herder or even Nerve Hurter. He thought it was a big nothing word that meant something in the star wars universe. This shows how without happening by the knowledge (which I had not) you wouldn't know this. BY WATCHING THE MOVIE YOU CAN TELL THEY GOT THE BOBA FETT QUOTE WRONG.

There is a big difference between being ignorant of a fact so small and unknown to many people and screwing up a quote into a sentence that makes no sense.

I think it's funny how this got out of hand. 0Chris0 how can you say I had a huge, gaping hole in my Star Wars knowledge for not knowing what a nerf was. sarajean posted the things they explained it in which I haven't seen. A huge hole would not be knowing who Darth Vader is...I've forgotten most of which I did know as it's been six plus years since I even cared to know what is beyond the movies. As you failed to realize my complaints weren't the lack of knowledge but how they were simple, grammatical/spelling errors that they could have fixed. How am I supposed to take them seriously when they are misquoting things?

Anyways, I'm expecting an apology for not one but two people talking to me like idiots for not knowing what a nerf herder is. I admitted I was wrong about the nerf herder posts ago...since then it's just been debauchery.

Mine is Revenge. :) I like me some good light saber fights. :)

sarajean
08-28-2007, 09:50 AM
guh. revenge is my son's favourite, too. a new hope is my husband's. he says that while empire has the best story, nothing will ever compare to seeing the first star wars movie in the theatre when he was 7. he says he cried when obi wan died. (but don't ever tell him i told you that)

<---will always love empire the most...

Obi Wan is my favorite character, though Anakin was pretty cool in e3. Light sabers!

Seeing Obi Wan die is more sad for me now that I've seen all six movies. (but don't tell anyone I told you that)

Mattrick
08-28-2007, 10:00 AM
I'd say Revenge of the Sith is my favourite. Overall I enjoyed the prequels story line much better even thought Ep 1 wasn't very good. I think what makes the movie so great is the light sabre fight between Anakin and Obi-Wan. "You were meant to destroy the sith, not join them! To bring balance to the force not leave it in darkness! You were my brother Anakin! I loved you." "I HATE YOU!!" That scene there was my favourite in all the movies.

Empire is a close second though, many great parts in it. Solo and Leia was great. "stop that." "stop what?" "my hands are dirty." "So are mine what are you afraid of?"

Matt
08-28-2007, 10:01 AM
Not trying to hash but I don't believe anyone is really pissed about this "nerf herder" issue. We should probably stop acting like anyone might be. :grouphug:

Text leaves a lot to be desired in the overall communication process so we should remember that.

My own opinion-- remember, I am old and saw the original versions in the theater as well.

When Leia said "Nerf Herder" (because I understood it perfectly), even at 8 years old I understood it was the perfect "Princess" thing to say. I didn't need the definition because it was in the context. How often have we heard a princess refer to someone she doesn't like as a "goat hearder"?

Its the same with Jabba and "Bantha Fodder" (he calls Luke that in the 6th movie). Do we need to know what a Bantha is to know that Jabba was calling him a pile of shit?

back to star wars stuff:

What is your problem? My whole post was about Star Wars. I had to point out they clearly show you what a bantha is several times in the first Star Wars movie ever so his point (towards nerf herder) was nil.

"I've been waiting for you, Obi-Wan. We meet again at last. The circle is now complete. When I left you, I was but the learner but now I am master."
"Only a master of evil Darth."

and

"He doesn't like you"
"I'm sorry."
"I don't like you either. You just watch yourself. We're wanted men. I've got the death sentence on twelve systems."
"I'll be careful."
"YOU'LL BE DEAD!"

have got to be the best conversations in Star Wars history.

Darth Vader isn't a snivelling boy. That is why he turned to the dark side. Most jedi's are chosen from birth and do not know family or love because they are trained to ignore their emotions. When he was first being trained he was eight years old, a normal boy dealing with friends, pressures of society, being a slave, having a mother etc. His love for padme was created before becoming a jedi as was his mothers and stayed with him. They were, in a sense, the only things he could still feel.

Palpatine also created Anakin himself and thus planned everything that was to happen to him. Palpatine knew he never had a father and became his father (since he is his father) to manipulate him. In Revenge of the Sith everyone tries to screw with his head, telling him half truths. None of the other jedi's knew how to feel like Anakin did. It's why he appeared snivelling, because he actually felt. Yoda knew it all along, that he was too old. "fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering' which is what happened to Anakin. After Anakin lost his mother Palpatine created the fear of losing padme which lead him down the path to the darkside. Mace never trusted Anakin either because he uses some of the dark side himself.

Matt
08-28-2007, 10:42 AM
Actually, if you weren't paying attention, the Bantha's were non existent

The point was that a princess called a scoundrel basically a "goat herder" in Star Wars speak. :D

Now, I would suggest that this issue be put to rest because while it seems silly now, it could get worse if it continues.

I didnt like the first 3 as much as the 2nd 3 either, and was a little disappointed with Revenge - it could have been alot better if christensen and portman decided to actually try acting instead of impersonating bits of wood for the whole movie. Im not sure what it is about the first 3 that bugs me so much, its like theyve been coloured in with chidlren's crayons. Everything is so super and colourful and pretty it takes away any kind of real ominous feeling to it - there's not enough grit or hard edges, so it was hard for me to swallow this evil transformation of anakin when every edge has been baby-proofed. The first movie set tone with fucking ja-ja and those funny little adorable clones. Their heads looked like puppy dog heads *shakes in booties*.

Who was lucas gearing the movies for? 5-13 year olds?

Well, it was set during the Republic Age of Prosperity before the Dark Times. it would make much sense for it look as dark as when the empire took over. Revenge of the Sith was darker in atmosphere for a majority of the movie. I agree Phantom Menace only had a few redeeming aspects but I enjoyed the other two. I enjoy the story in the original three a lot more, but the old three are better movies.

This backstory was interesting, just the way it was packaged and delivered could have been better I think. I thought the rise of Palpatine was brilliant though.

The acting was far better in the second trilogy overall but harrison ford and carrie fisher are legends so :P. Portman had some moments in the first 3 but still, it was pretty stilted i think.

Mattrick
09-21-2007, 08:44 AM
You also have to remember, the original three starred Mark Hamill. Ouch. Much whinier and bitchier than Anakin ever could have been. When you see how awesome the old jedis were it makes Luke look even more like a little bitch. The creep even enjoyed making out with his sister.

Matt

I blame most of the acting in the movies (aside from McDiarmid and McGregor(Irish factor?)) on Lucas's script and directing. Christensen isn't a great actor but he sure isn't a bad one. He was great in Shattered Glass and pretty decent in Life As A House. Mark Hamill (though I love him) is not a very good actor.

If any of you think he is worse than that little shit they cast as Vader in episode one...

MonteGss

The NOOOOO can't be attributed to Hayden as it was James Earl Jone's voice and, ultimately, George Lucas lame idea of a homage to the original Frankenstein.

I think episodes 1,2,3 were rushed. I think they had bad casting, not all, but some of the major characters. To many loose ends and un-answered variables. Jango Fett took the bad-ass feel away from Boba Fett. It's hard for me to see Boba in the same light. And of course, no ewaks! Where were the midget wookies at anyway?:)

Hayden Christenseslaksdjwhatver is the worst actor I have ever seen, and the fact that he played one of my favorite villians only irritates me even more. Honestly, I could of have done a better job. :P

i laughed at "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" in the theatre, and i still laugh every time i see it.

he was fucking horrible.

SJ - You do know that NOOOOOOO wasn't Hayden Christensen, right?

of course i know that it wasn't hayden christiansen. dur. i'm not the fucking idiot you'd like to believe i am. i didn't *say* that he said it. it was just a way to sum up everything that was cheesey and wrong (in MY mind) with the prequels.

why must you be so argumentative?

You also have to remember, the original three starred Mark Hamill. Ouch. Much whinier and bitchier than Anakin ever could have been. When you see how awesome the old jedis were it makes Luke look even more like a little bitch. The creep even enjoyed making out with his sister.

Hahah, you have a point with Mark Hamill - I think the age of the movies and how everything was so revolutionary balanced his character out. Lucas must be 30% cheese :D

Matt
10-04-2007, 06:45 AM
The problem is that he was a little bitch. Fucking moisture farmer is whole life and thrust into galactic war that he had only heard about. He had leave imo even though he was the high on the puss scale for a Jedi.

Anakin was groomed to do this since he was a kid, lived the life and was still horrible.
